Carl 'Tank' Baker
1960 - 1982
23-34-1 (9) Carl 'Tank' Baker was a small sized heavyweight from Nassau in The Bahamas. After building a respectable record against island competition including Stamford Harris whom he beat 5 times in 6 years. On a short tour of Europe in 1969 where he lost via stoppages to Ulric Regis (KO in 10), Peter Weiland (TKO in the 2nd) and Jose Manuel Urtain (KO in 23 seconds in the first round). On his return to the Carribean he won three straight fights before he fought Rahman Ali in 1971 which he lost on points over 10 rounds. Returning to Italy in late 1971 and he lost to Piermario Baruzzi (loss via TKO in the eighth) and Domenico Adinolfi (loss via TKO in the fourth). His next notable opponent is Jeff Merritt in mid '72 which ends with a KO by Merritt in the second. Two fights later he runs into Raul Gorosito and loses a eighth round decision. At the end of 1974 he faces 'Candy' Randy Neumann who TKO's him in the tenth. Six months later he ran into a retiring Jimmy Ellis looking to go out with a win. It was never in doubt as Ellis knocks him out in the first. Baker would struggle his way through the rest of career before retiring in 1982. Rodney Bobick
37-7-0 (18)
1972-1977 Rodney Bobick the older brother of Duane Bobick is probably most famous for his fight on the undercard of the Thrilla in Manilla against Larry Holmes. Rodney proved himself to be a very capable fighter in his shortened career in which he managed to fit in 44 fights in 5 years. His notable scalps include Harold Carter, Vicente Paul Rondon, a young Mike Weaver, Ron Stander, Pat Duncan and Roy "Cookie" Wallace. He also holds on his record losses to Terry Hinke, Larry Holmes, Scott LeDoux, Jody Ballard and Mike Schutte. 'Memphis' Al Jones
10-34-2 (6)
1965-1987 From Memphis, Al Jones spent his career padding the careers of several prominent fighters throught the late 60's and into the 80's including a retirement from 1976 to 1979. A tall man of 6'5" he never bacame big in his frame fighting most of his career at around 200 lbs. His biggest moment was a stunning third round knockout victory over Boone Kirkman in 1974. That victory (the second in a run of 4 straight victories capped by a points win over Charles Chuck Olivera) was the high point of his career. His looses (much more numerous than victories) include losses to Jerry Quarry, Joe Frazier, Orville Qualls, Dante Cane, Aaron Eastling, Al Jones, Mario Baruzzi, Terry Hinke, Rodney Bobick, Jimmy Ellis, Jimmy Young and Tony Tucker. Jones Career Bouts: 1987-10-20 Jerry Halstead 51-6-1 L KO 6 1983-06-14 Mike Cohen 14-4-0 L KO 5 1982-08-27 Bill Sharkey 20-4-1 L KO 5 1982-08-17 Charles Atlas 9-26-0 W PTS 8 1981-04-09 Tony Tucker 7-0-0 L KO 1 1981-01-15 Floyd Cummings 13-0-0 L KO 1 1980-10-07 Steve Mormino 6-1-0 L KO 8 1979-12-13 James Tillis 11-0-0 L KO 4 1979-11-27 Henry Porter 8-1-0 L TKO 4 1976-08-17 Ibar Arrington 13-1-1 L KO 7 1976-08-03 James Dixon 0-1-0 L PTS 6 1975-11-11 Jimmy Young 15-4-2 L TKO 2 1975-10-06 Clyde Elmo Brown 9-15-0 W TKO 2 1975-05-30 Charles Atlas 6-6-0 L PTS 10 1974-12-13 Ron Lyle 29-1-1 L KO 5 1974-05-07 Charles Chuck Olivera 12-1-1 W PTS 10 1974-04-15 Jack Johnson 5-10-2 W KO 3 1974-04-09 Boone Kirkman 32-2-0 W KO 3 1974-04-05 Roy Rodriguez 0-3-0 W KO 3 1973-10-23 Jimmy Ellis 38-8-0 L KO 7 1973-08-24 Rodney Bobick 18-2-0 L PTS 8 1972-12-05 Terry Hinke 26-2-2 L KO 2 1971-04-12 Leroy Caldwell 9-6-0 L PTS 8 1970-12-26 Piermario Baruzzi 20-0-0 L TKO 8 1969-03-17 Tony (Kid) Longoria 20-0-2 W KO 2 1969-02-20 Moses Harrell 9-4-3 L PTS 10 1969-02-10 Charles Williams 2-0-1 W KO 2 1968-12-12 Charles Williams 1-0-1 L PTS 4 1968-12-12 Charlie Williams 2-0-0 L PTS 4 1968-12-10 Al Banks 6-3-0 L PTS 10 1967-08-15 Al Jones 18-1-0 L KO 3 1967-05-24 Aaron Eastling 10-1-1 L PTS 8 1967-01-19 Dante Canè 14-1-2 L DQ 4 1967-01-11 Jerry Quarry 20-1-3 L KO 5 1966-11-14 Ron Marsh 14-1-0 L KO 6 1966-10-03 Orville Qualls 4-0-0 L TKO 6 1966-05-26 Joe Frazier 9-0-0 L KO 1 1966-05-02 Jerry Quarry 16-0-2 L PTS 10 1966-03-08 Bill Nielsen 22-9-2 L TKO 5 1966-02-16 Ed Hurley 3-0-0 W PTS 6 1966-02-01 Ron Marsh 5-0-0 L PTS 6 1965-09-21 Lou Bailey 11-23-5 L KO 2 1965-06-19 Bobby Joe Rapier 1-2-0 W PTS 6 1965-04-25 Tommy Freeman 0-0-1 D PTS 6 1965-04-03 Jack Johnson 0-0-2 L TKO 6 1965-03-20 Jack Johnson 0-0-0 D PTS 4 |

Doh! Sorry, Tea. Thanks for Fields.
Rocco deserves thanks, too, though, for all the heavies he cranks out. It's all good. I appreciate all you guys. ---Mark

Rating some "Tomato Cans".....
Don Ellis - United States
Light Heavyweight 1945-57. 13 wins / 30 losses / 11 draws / 0 KO Hometown: Atlantic City, NJ Birthplace: Washington, DC Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto A boxer with good staying power and a great chin being stopped only 3 times in 54 fights. Lacked any kind of punch though apparently as he recored "0" KO's in 13 wins. Ellis' only win of any note was actually his 3rd to last career fight, a 6 round decision win over Albert Westphal who was fighting in his 9th fight. He also managed a 6 round draw with German Middleweight, Peter Muller and a 10 round draw with German Middleweight, Franz Szuzina. Noteable losses were a 6 round decision to Holly Mims, a 1st round KO by Sugar Ray Robinson in April 1951, an 8 round decision to Karl Schmidt, a 10 round decision to Hans Strtz, a 10 round decision to Conny Rux, a 10 round decision to Charles Humez, an 8 round decision to Alessandro D'Ottavio, 2 consecutive 8 round decisions to Erwin Hack, a 10 round decision to Germinal Ballarin, a 10 rounder to Wim Snoek, an 8 rounder to Willi Besmanoff, a 10 rounder to Rocco Mazzola and finally a 10 round decision loss to Johnny Halafihi to finish his career. Quite a few names that have been rated into the game that Ellis fought to the distance in most cases. Lack again of any kind of punch apparently though usually put him on the short end of a decision. |

Rating some "Tomato Cans".....
Bernard Belli - France
Light Heavyweight (I'm guessing) 1957 This guy gets thrown in only because he was one of Rocco Mazzola's opponents whom I'm working through now rating to get ready to rate Mazzola himself. Otherwise he's not worth anything other then to fatten up somebody elses record. A true Tomoato Can ![]() 0 wins / 3 losses / 0 draw / 0 KO Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto BoxRec does not list a nationality or weight division. His name obviously sounds French. His three opponents.... Marcel Tirel, a Middleweight, Belli lost to in a 10 round decision. Next up was Rocco Mazzola, listed as a heavyweight in BoxRec. Mazzola won an 8 round decision. Belli's 3rd and last fight was against a Gilbert Chapron, listed as a light heavyweight. Belli looses another 10 round decision and then is gone from the boxing scene. Guess we'll rate him as a Light HEavyweight. |

Here's a guy whose name I kept running across looking at other fighters and finally decided to get around to rating him to add to the stable of European fighters.
Paul Roux - France Light Heavyweight 1957-71 61 wins / 16 losses / 4 draws / 13 KO Hometown: St. Quentin, France Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto BoxRec lists him as a Heavyweight, but he attained his most success by far as a Light Heavyweight. A pretty good chin he had as he suffered only 4 KO's in his career. He was not a knockout artist himself though as his 13 KO's in 82 fights would attest, but he had longevity in the ring going 10 plus rounds in many fights. Against some of the guys that have been rated into the game he defeated Michel Dinot, Joseph Landsheere, Francois Kania twice, Erwin Hack twice, Germinal Ballarin, Pekka Kokkonen, Jose Peyre and Mariano Echevarria. He also fought a 15 round draw with Ballarin and a 10 round fight with Peter Muller that ended in a no contest decision. He suffered losses to Erich Schoppner, Gustav Scholtz, Yvan Prebeg, Wilhelm von Homburg. In October 1959 he fought a 15 round decision over Charles Colin(17-9-3,12) to win the French LHW Title. Roux held the French LHW Title till December 1963 loosing it to Bernard Quellier(9-15-3,8) in an 11th round KO. In between that time he fought numerous times defending his Light Heavyweight Title, defeating Gilbert Chapron(18-3-2,11), Wladislas Kopec(16-8-2,10), Germinal Ballarin(61-16-11,32), and Jo Juvillier(14-14-3,5). He also fought draws with Charles Colin, Ballarin, Michel Vinot(37-8-3,22) and Quellier. In between all that in Feb. 1961 he fought Erich Schoppner for the European Light Heavyweight Title, loosing by 13th round TKO to Schoppner. After loosing the French title to Quellier in Dec. 1963, those two fought a rematch in April 1964 with Roux winning back the French LHW Title with a 15 round decision. The very next month in May Roux lost the title a 2nd time, this time to MIchel Vinot in a 12 round decision. In March 1965, Roux won the French LHW Title a 3rd time, defeating Vinot in another 12 round decision. Roux successfully defended his title in Jan. 1966 against Quellier before loosing the title again in December 1966, this time to Bernard Thebault(15-3-0,7), this time by way of a 4th round disqualification.Thebault beat Roux in a rematch in June 1967 in a 15 round decision. That was Roux last challenge for the French LHW Title, though he continued on to fight till 1971 compiling a 10-2 record in the twilite of his career. |

A couple more Mazzola opponents...
Cesare Bagnoli - Italy
Light Heavyweight 1954-57 18 wins / 7 losses / 4 draws / 6 KO Birthplace: Milan, Italy Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto Bagnoli fought his career entirely in Italy. He fought Domenico Baccheschi twice, first time loosing an 8 round decision to Domenico, the second time beating him in 8 rounds. The only other fights of any kind of note in Bagnoli's career are his last two, a 6 round decision loss to Rocco Mazzola and a 6th round KO at the hands of a young Sante Amonti. |

A couple more Mazzola opponents...
Uwe Janssen - Germany
Light Heavyweight 1954-61 20 wins / 18 losses / 6 draws / 13 KO Hometown: Hamburg, Germany Manager: Reinhold Tomfort Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto A number of names in the game come up in Janssen's career most without success. He managed to defeat Bobby Warmbrunn and fight draws with Albert Finch, Erich Schoppner, Domenico Baccheschi, and Erwin Hack. He lost fights though to Willi Besmanoff, Schoppner, Randy Turpin, Giulio Rinaldi, Sante Amonti, Mike Holt, Pekka Kokkonen, Plinio Scarabelin(not rated yet but going to do), Jimmy slade and Franco DePiccoli. He had decent KO capability, but had a bit of of weak jaw himself as Janssen suffered 11 stoppages in his 18 losses. |

Rating some "Tomato Cans".....
Gilbert Chapron - France
Light Heavyweight 1957-60,64 18 wins / 3 losses / 2 draws / 11 KO Birthplace: Blois(Loire-et-Cher) Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto Fought regularly til May 1960. Did not fight then til March 1964 when he won a 6 round decision against a new guy on the block with no previous fight experience, Carlo Bocchieri. Those two tangled again that December, this time with Bocchieri winning a 6 round decision. At that time Chapron hung up the gloves for good. From March 1957 through November 1957 Chapron fought 13 times winning 13 times all against total nobodys ring up 10 of his 11 career KO's. None of these guys had a winning record, 8 of them with no career wins at the time they fought Chapron. Then in December 1957 he fought for the 14th time that year, this time against someone with a record, Michel Diouf, a busy French Middleweight of the mid 50's to mid 60's who held the French Middleweight title for a brief period. Diouf had a career record of 43-32-6,20KO's. He was actually 25-4-2 at the time he fought Chapron. Two months later Chapron lost his first fight an 8th round KO at the hand of a Yao Kouame(21-8-5,13) from the Ivory Coast. In his last fights from 58 thru 60, Chapron beat Paul Roux by a 6th round DQ and later lost to Roux by 13th round TKO. He beat once and drew one fight with Mariano Echevarria. Those 4 fights with Roux and Echevarria his most noteworthy fights. |

Hamouda Bouraoui - Tunisia
MIddleweight 1952-58 2 wins / 10 losses / 0 draw / 1 KO Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto BoxRec does not list his weight division, but he fought all opponents listed that are in BoxRec as mainly Middleweights. The two exceptions being Welterweight Abel Soudan and LightHeavy/Heavyweight Rocco Mazzola. Bouraoui fought and lost three times to Germinal Ballarin(66-16-11,32), Lost to Tiberio Mitri(88-7-6,21) and lost to Terry Downes(35-9-0,28) all in the game. Other opponents didn't look too shabby. He defeated twice Marcel Tirel(31-15-5,13) for his only 2 career wins and lost once each to Richard Bouchez(23-12-2,10), Bob Stevens(28-14-3,10), Abel Soudan(22-7-2,12), Rocco Mazzola(26-12-3,10) and Manfred Hass(38-18-4,17). Some more Rocco Mazzola opponents...
Pedro Klyssens - Netherlands
Heavyweight 1954-1960 10 wins / 12 losses / 0 draw / 5 KO Alias: Klijssens Birthplace: Amsterda, NH Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto Career started out 10-5-0,5KO's from 54 thru mid-57. That included a win and a loss against Uwe Janssen, a defeat of Jacques Bro. In April 1956 he defeated Willi Schagen by 6th round TKO for the Dutch Heavyweight Title. Seven months later the fought a rematch, this time Schagen KO'ing Klyssens in the 11th to take the Dutch crown. After that Klyssens then won 2 more fights against meaningless opponents when his career took a nosedive over the last couple of years. He lost his last 7 fights, 4 by KO. Rocco Mazzola beat him once as did Karl Mildenberger and Pekka Kokkonen. Paul Roux beat Klyssens in 2 10 round decisions, including what was Klyssens last fight. |

Some more Rocco Mazzola opponents...
Jacques Bro - FRance
Light Heavyweight 1954-59 13 wins / 13 losses / 3 draws / 4 KO Birthplace: Limoges, France Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto Bro fought 3 times for the French Light Heavyweight Title. The first time he lost a 15 round decision to Charles Colin in April 1956. Those two fought a rematch in May 1957 with it ending in a 15 round draw. The three then fought for a 3rd and final time in February 1958. Colin defended his title with another 15 round decision over Bro. Other fights in Bro's career were a 6 round decision loss to Willi Besmanoff, then an 8 round decision loss to Besmanoff. He lost an 8 round decision to Pedro Klyssens. Bro was KO'd in 5 by Randy Turpin. Horst Niche(35-22-6,8KO), a busy German heavyweight in the 50's/early 60's beat BRo once and Bro drew with him once. He lost 10 round decisions to Leen Jansen and Paul Roux, an 8 round decision to Rocco Mazzola and then finished up his career with KO losses to Yao Kouame and Karl Mildenberger. He also lost a 10 round decision to Francois Kania and won by 7th round TKO over Andre Wyns, a couple "tomato can" fighters done for the game. That leaves me with a couple more guys to rate and I'll have all of Rocco Mazzola'a opponents either rated myself or by others or were in the game. Then we'll be ready to do Mazzola. |

Some other Italian HW's
Getting side tracked just a little bit from finishing off Rocco Mazzola's opponents I got a couple Italian HW's here for you...
Massimo Zanaboni - Italy Heavyweight 1957-1961 20 wins / 2 losses / 0 draw / 5 KO Alias: Leo d'Maremma Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto Zanaboni's two career losses were by KO. The first, a 7th round KO to Jose Gonzales Sales in Feb. 1958. The 2nd time he was stopped was in what turned out to be the 2nd to last fight in his career in June 1959 when he fought Bruno Scarabellin for the Italian Heavyweight Title. Scarabellin KO'd Zanaboni in the 8th round. The other noteable fights in Massimo's career all turned out to be wins against Bobby Warmburnn, Hans Peter Drabes, Giovanni Alfonsetti, Robert Eugene, Sales in a 2nd fight between the two, Warmbrunn again, Alain Cherville, Uber Bacilieri, Feerico Friso, and Bacilieri again. He won his last career fight a KO of Gianfranco Tommasini (love that name, not much of a record, 4-11-1,1KO). |
