The first one I have listed as both 1976 and 1978, so it's probably a 1976 photo that the team re-used. The second is more likely from 1978.

On a side note, I do not include Hairston in my coaches database because all the information I could find indicated that he was not an active coach; the position was largely ceremonial. As I understand it, his health did not allow him to do anything more than some light scouting for the team.

Interesting - I checked back at the old Street and Smith from 1978 (not authoritative, but still fairly reliable) and sure enough old Sam wasn't list among the other coaches. I checked Retrosheet, and they have him as a bullpen coach, which might mean something, or not. Baseball Cube, which I've found to be a fairly good source of information on coaching jobs, doesn't have him listed as having any pro coaching duties at all until the 1980s as Birmingham's hitting coach.

So, I think I'll go with your assessment of his 1978 role, or lack thereof.
