Ruth Bombs 3 HR Against St. Louis
Monday, June 13th, 1921

Babe Ruth went on a hitting rampage at Shibe Park today and got membership in the select club of hitters who have hit three home runs in a game. He walloped three into the stands to pace the Athletics to a 17-16 victory over the St. Louis Browns.

The Philadelphia left fielder collected 4 hits in 4 at-bats, drove in 5 and scored 4 runs.

After his three-home run game he said this to the press: "I have been making solid contact lately, but not getting any lift. Today I got it up in the air and out of the ballpark. I had my home run swing down pat. Got some good pitches to hit, too."

Babe Ruth hit an RBI triple in the 1st, hit a two-run home run off Eddie Stack in the 2nd, hit a solo-shot off Eddie Stack in the 4th, walked in the 6th, walked in the 7th and hit a solo-shot off Herman Pillette in the 9th.

This year Ruth is hitting .321, produced 53 RBIs and 19 home runs, scored 45 times and gotten on base at a .455 rate.

Ruth Breaks Old Record with His 161 Homerun
Monday, August 1st, 1921

Babe Ruth has long been known as a big bopper. Now he owns the all-time home run record, having blasted number 161. The Philadelphia star broke the record held by Jack Clements. Ruth reportedly received a congratulatory phone call from the nation's chief executive. The Athletics will hold a special ceremony for Ruth at a later date.

Babe Ruth homered off Hippo Vaughn in the 1st.

This year Ruth is hitting .338, produced 91 RBIs and 39 home runs, scored 85 times and gotten on base at a .465 rate.

Monday, September 12th, 1921
With the rookie draft only weeks away, clubs are huddled in their conference rooms, mapping out scouting strategies with their eye toward the future. These sabermetrical speculators will be traipsing across the fruited plain, hunting for the ideal find, trying to decipher the will, drive and pure passion on the unknown youthful faces before them. Some will rely on tried-and-true baseball knowledge, others psychology. And others will live by luck alone. Though their final assessments will be made and hashed over many times before draft day, the repercussions of draft day, good or bad, will endure long after the dust has settled.

At any rate, teams now have thirty days to scout the draft pool prior to the draft. The Transactions page also gets a new section dedicated to the pool.

The top players available (in no particular order) seem to be:
1. Bob Fothergill, 24 year-old left fielder out of college.
2. Sparky Adams, 27 year-old shortstop out of college.
3. Butch Henline, 26 year-old catcher out of college.
4. George Grantham, 21 year-old second baseman out of college.
5. Joe Hauser, 22 year-old first baseman out of college.
6. Travis Jackson, 17 year-old shortstop out of high-school.
7. Ray Blades, 25 year-old left fielder out of college.
8. Jim Bottomley, 21 year-old first baseman out of college.
9. Ted Blankenship, 20 year-old starting pitcher out of college.
10. Topper Rigney, 24 year-old shortstop out of college.

Victory and defeat play out in a rainbow of colors, sounds, smells and feelings. North American BaseBall League playoff baseball is a memorable experience. What is it like? Ask the 10-year-old sitting with his dad as he plucks a foul ball out of the air. Ask the veteran slugger who hits that walk-off home run. Ask the manager in the big game after coming from 10 games back to win the pennant. Ask the countless number of legends who have flourished or those greats who never won the big one. Or tomorrow, ask any of the rookies what it's like to play in one of the North American Series showdowns:
Boston Red Sox versus Boston Braves.

First Baseman: Wally Pipp (Washington Senators)

1921 Hall of Fame Inductions

Pioneer Induction
White Joins Greats in NABL Hall of Fame
Sunday, November 6th, 1921

At his Hall of Fame induction legendary pitcher, Will White reminisced about his baseball career: "My how time flies. It is only a mere moment from your first spring training game to your first oldtimer's game. But it a magnificent journey."

Today White was installled into the North American BaseBall League Hall of Fame after his selection by the Baseball Writers Association.

Baseball's newest HOF inductee was one fine hurler. When White retired at age 39, he had registered 149 wins and 162 losses, struck out 1057 hitters, pitched in 414 games and compiled a 2.03 ERA.

Among the many people he mentioned in his induction speech was his first manager.
"He gave me my first opportunity when he could have kept other people. I was lucky -- he was a Will White fan. You can't get in the Hall of Fame without your first chance."

Service Inductions
Left Fielder Installed in Hall of Fame
Sunday, November 6th, 1921

"From the first time I saw him play, I knew he had the potential to be one of the best," Jesse Burkett's first manager said, "and the more I saw him play, the more certain I was that he would reach that potential."

This manager was just one of the people there at Burkett's enshrinement in the North American BaseBall League Hall of Fame. It was a celebration of the career of one of the shining stars of his generation. His teammates loved him and opposing fans loved to hate him, but respect followed him everywhere, as evidenced by the large crowd at the ceremony. Not only were teammates there, but opposing players and managers as well, along with a large throng of fans.

The man of the moment was overcome with emotion when he finally took his turn at the podium to speak. "This is one of the greatest moments of my life and to share it with all of you here is... simply amazing. I would just like to thank my family and all my teammates for their support during my journey here. Individual honor was never my goal, winning was, but this is more than I could have ever dreamed."

Burkett retired at the age of 41 with a .339 career batting average. He mainly played left fielder, participated in 2512 games, hit 101 home runs and batted in 1590 runs.

Thompson, Taff Swap Clubs
Monday, November 7th, 1921

Philadelphia and Cincinnati have swapped players. The Phillies announced today that they have sent 28-year-old center fielder Shag Thompson to the Reds in exchange for 31-year-old reliever John Taff.

Over his career Thompson is batting .244 with 57 doubles, 30 triples, 1 home run, 205 RBIs and scored 221 runs in 765 games.

Taff has parlayed 71 games and 102 innings of work into a 5-5 lifetime record with 8 saves and 39 strikeouts. In his career he has fashioned a 2.29 ERA with 39 strikeouts and 34 walks.

Philadelphia Wins SP Williams Sweepstakes
Wednesday, November 30th, 1921

Philadelphia fans could barely contain their jubilation as Lefty Williams, considered one of the best at his position, opted to sign with the club.

The deal, estimated at $84,000 over 7 years, is seen as a masterstroke for the General Manager's office and could well go down as one of the shrewdest moves in club history.

Williams has authored a 117-81 won-lost record in his career with a 2.89 ERA.

Future in Jeopardy for Phillies Roy Hitt
Sunday, January 8th, 1922

The injury that forced Roy Hitt to go on the disabled list is serious -- and the possibility that it's career-ending hasn't been ruled out according to his agent. Speaking to reporters in Philadelphia today, Hitt's agent told them, "It's a pretty serious injury. I guess there's always the possibility it's career-ending, but we're not sure. He's getting intensive treatment five days a week." The 34-year-old Phillies starting pitcher has been undergoing extensive rehabitation for ulnar nerve irritation and hurt it again while working out last week. BNN contacted medical experts and were told that it is rare that a ballplayer can come back from such a bad injury.

In his career Hitt has totaled 170 victories and 179 defeats with a 3.36 ERA. The 34-year-old hurler also has struck out 1446 batters in 3130.2 innings and surrendered 3333 hits.

Cincinnati Sends Maisel to Philadelphia
Saturday, February 4th, 1922

There were plenty of hugs and handshakes passed out as 29-year-old center fielder George Maisel left the Cincinnati Reds today en route to joining the Philadelphia Phillies organization. 29-year-old center fielder George Harper and 22-year-old third baseman Wally Kopf will be traveling to Cincinnati Reds to complete the swap.

In his career Harper has racked up 163 hits with a .299 average and .366 on-base percentage. His numbers include 28 doubles, 7 triples, and 3 home runs, along with 80 runs scored and 65 RBIs.

New York Hexed: No-Hit by Leonard
Sunday, May 7th, 1922

Philadelphia's Dutch Leonard was right on the mark today at Polo Grounds IV in a sensational no-hitter against the New York Giants, shutting them down 3-0. He chalked up 1 strikeout and gave up no walks in a game he could really brag about.
"You might say I was the best pitcher in the league today and you would be right."

Leonard has offended some fans and sportswriters with confidence that sometimes borders on arrogance.

The Philadelphia skipper told reporters in the postgame interview, "He tossed a masterpiece today and it ain't braggin' if you can back it up. Today he certainly did just that."

A reporter asked Leonard if he thought the fans would appreciate his perceived greatness after this game. With a big grin on his face, he quickly quipped, "Listen, if you start worrying about the people in the stands, before too long you're up in the stands with them."

This year Leonard has compiled a 4-1 mark with a 4.20 ERA.

NABL News: Draft Pool Revealed
Tuesday, September 12th, 1922

For would-be rookies, a list of whom was announced today by the league, the wait to find out whether or not they have been selected is excruciating. It's tough just getting a scout to notice you, to think you are worth investing an organization's future in. Then draft day arrives and you are snatched up by someone you might not have expected. Some will catch on big; others will be away from home for the first time and will struggle to gain a solid footing in the minors. Still others will battle through, gain that coveted footing and go on to have a solid professional career.

The top players available (in no particular order) seem to be:
1. Harry Rice, 20 year-old third baseman out of college.
2. Willie Kamm, 22 year-old third baseman out of college.
3. Harry McCurdy, 22 year-old catcher out of college.
4. Johnny Schulte, 26 year-old catcher out of college.
5. Earl Whitehill, 23 year-old starting pitcher out of college.
6. Hack Wilson, 22 year-old center fielder out of college.
7. Les Bell, 20 year-old shortstop out of college.
8. Showboat Fisher, 23 year-old right fielder out of college.
9. Pinky Hargrave, 26 year-old catcher out of college.
10. Heinie Manush, 21 year-old left fielder out of college.

Cubs Jackson Takes NL Batting Crown
Monday, October 2nd, 1922

When the dust settled on the 1922 National League campaign, Joe Jackson came out on top with a .389 batting average. "This was a nice way to end the season," said the Chicago Cubs right fielder at the awards presentation yesterday. The 33-year-old Jackson completed the year with 233 hits that included 35 doubles, 13 triples and 6 home runs.

Browns Hornsby Newest .400 Hitter
Monday, October 2nd, 1922

Rogers Hornsby joined a very select group today as he closed out 1922 with a torrid .410 batting average. It was a fantastic year for the St. Louis second baseman as he became the newest member of baseball's .400 club.

During the season he stroked 250 hits, including 36 doubles, 16 triples and 23 home runs. Hornsby also scored 142 times and drove in 116 runs.

Asked by the media what's the hardest part of hitting .400, he glibly replied, "Getting 4 hits in every 10 at-bats." Then, speaking seriously, Hornsby added, "Staying out of slumps is important. You have to be focused in every game and in every at-bat. Don't swing at anything but strikes... and stay away from any pitch you can't hit."

How does it feel to win the North American Series?

"It's strange. Weird," is the way the Washington manager put it. "Like it was supposed to happen. Whenever something did happen, it didn't surprise us. We truly believed we would win."

Today at Braves Field, Washington completed its magical run to the North American Series title with a 7-1 triumph over the Boston Braves. It was the 8th time they have won it all. In the regular season, Washington notched a 97-57 mark and took first place in the American League standings. MVP was Ray Keating (2-0, 1.29 era)

And how does it feel to lose the North American Series?

"Your heart is heavy and your stomach is empty" is the way the dejected Boston skipper described it. "It's the lowest of lows, when you lose... and the highest of highs, when you win."
