The name that jumps out at me is Jeter. But I see he is 39. How did he slide in? Was it an RC-remaining-in-career calculation?

I keep thinking of players either from the WBL or just from baseball history that I wonder if they are in the FBL--but I see the stats site has a handy dandy search function. Thad Bosley, Ron Roenicke, Ed Ott, wherefore art thou? :}

Yeah, he and a lat-season Tom Glavine such in early. Hasn't mattered really, he hasn't had much impact. Messersmith is the one bothering me - he got through and will be featuring in the WS this season with the Sox from the look of it. He may get retired after that.

You might just see your boys in '07...

Ed Ott. Now there's a name I remember. And his platoon mate Steve Nicosia.

Nicosia is here, catching for the Sens...

It would be cool if, when Ed comes along, the same setup miraculously happens. Let's wait and see...

September 15, 1906: From the Commissioner’s Office

A few items of interest from the Commissioner's Office, including this year's PostScript League World Series result.

Go Waterloo!

(FL Infield combos: Brian Doyle & Bucky Dent, Julio Cruz & Larry Milbourne, Scott Fletcher & Steve Buechele. Could Fletcher be too good for the FL?)

Yep, and Dent too well known. Buechele and Cruz would most likely scrape in. The others easily.

Aha! I didn't know notoriety was a consideration. That's fun.

Keeping in line thematically with the term "Footnote".

Entirely arbitrary of course, it's good to be the King...

WHITE SOX NEARLY THERE, ONLY BROWNS A FAINT HOPE OF CATCHING THEM

SUPERBAS AND BEANEATERS TAKING THE NL DOWN TO THE WIRE

Notable Performances
  • 5th: in the PSLN, three teams – Hazleton, Bridgeport and Harrisburg are tied going into the final game of the regular season. Hazleton gets through with a win to meet Waterloo in the PSL World Series, while the other two are eliminated in the cruellest fashion with Game 140 losses.
  • 6th: the A’s pile on 20 hits in a 10-3 win over the Sens, with Ricky Jordan going 4-for-5 with 2 RBI.
  • 10th: the Phillies’ Bill Gullickson shuts out the Superbas on 3 hits with 6 K in a 2-0 road win.
  • 13th: Charlie Smith 2-hits the Giants and fans half a dozen as the Beaneaters win it 4-0.
  • 14th: they’re all starting to be pretty key, but Andy Messersmith’s effort for the White Sox against the Browns is pretty special all the same, as he pitches all 15 to get his side home 4-3 and add one more in the W column, with the walkoff run coming via a rather untimely error.
  • 17th: Detroit’s Tim Flannery goes 3-for-5 with a trip and drives in 6 runs as his Tigers beat Boston 8-5.
  • 20th: Shane Andrews goes 4-for-4 with a trip and 3 ribbies to earn the Superbas a hard-fought 8-6 win over the Reds.
  • 24th: still fighting despite all their injury woes, the Beaneaters sneak past Pittsburgh 6-5 thanks in a large part to Gabe Kapler’s performance, as he goes 5-for-5 with 3 doubles and scores 4 runs.
  • 25th: Milt Thompson of the A’s goes 5-for-5 with a double and 3 RBI in an 11-4 win over Cleveland.
  • 30th: the Browns finish the month with a key walkoff win, with a 12th-inning single by Dave Altizer getting them home 5-4 over the Americans and keeping alive their faint hopes of catching the White Sox.

Achievements
  • 3rd: AL PotW – Danny Hoffman (New York); NL – Norm Larker (Chicago); PSLA – Marlon Anderson(Newark); PSLN – Luke Scott (Hazleton).
  • 10th: AL PotW – Bunk Congalton (Philadelphia); NL – Chris Owings (St. Louis).
  • 15th: in the PSL World Series, Waterloo beats Hazleton 4 games to 2 to win their second Championship.
  • 17th: AL PotW – Rube Manning (New York); NL – Leon Durham (Boston).
  • 18th: White Sox ace Andy Messersmith becomes the first in FL history to reach 100 wins.
  • 24th: AL PotW – Warren Hacker (Washington); NL – Red Murray (New York).

Injuries
  • 4th: Browns 2B Glenn Hubbard suffers a fractured hand that ends his season.
  • 10th: the Cards lose ace Jimmy Dygert for the remainder of the campaign to radial nerve compression.
  • 17th: a huge loss for the Beaneaters in the middle of their pennant race, as 2B John Hummel is ruled out for the season after tearing a ligament in his thumb. Their playoff hopes take a perhaps even bigger hit later that same week when ace Charlie Smith goes down for the year with biceps tendinitis.
  • 19th: likewise for the Sens, who lose outfielder John Titus for the duration after a pitch fractures his finger.
  • 26th: and again for the Pale Hose, who have already lost pitcher Danny Cox earlier in the month, as a strained groin prematurely ends ’06 for 2B Hector Lopez.
  • 28th: next it is the Superbas who suffer a major setback with starter Duane Pillette gone for the year thanks to a fractured elbow.

Final Week of 1906 Regular Season

OK so seeing as we have a damn fine pennant race here in the NL and even the AL being a little undecided given the new month kicks off with the two contenders up against each other, I thought I’d drip-feed these final few games to ratchet up the suspense.

Let’s begin this process with a quick rundown of where things are at.

Here are the two pennant races as at September 30:

Let’s go. Note – all box scores can be accessed via the links provided.

Well, well – that makes things a bit more interesting now, doesn’t it...

And how about that NL game, hey – Dempsey the walkoff hero. Beaneaters’ magic # now less than the Sox’s...

More tomorrow.

In a word, ridiculous. Beaneaters clinch, Brooklyn exits, Sox and Browns tied. Yep, ridiculous.

Heinie Berger, the winner of the clinching game, was a late-season FA signing. Guess he’s paid his way already.
