Walkers news: May 23-- Tiburicio recalled from injury rehab; Pazos to Memphis

The St. Louis River Walkers have recalled starting pitcher Angel Tiburcio from AAA Memphis, where he was on an injury rehab, and sent right-handed starter Alex Pazos to the Redbirds.
Tiburcio, 33, last pitched for the Walkers on May 5, when he left a game against Toledo in the third inning with a shoulder strain.
The right-hander has made six starts for St. Louis in 2034, going 2-1 with a 4.99 ERA.
He made one start at Memphis, where he gave up two runs over eight innings.
Pazos, 25, made four starts for the Walkers -- two good, two bad -- going 2-2 with a 5.85 ERA.
In his most recent outing, in a 10-3 loss to Twin Cities, he gave up eight runs in just four innings.

Walkers news: May 23 -- St. Louis 8, Twin Cities 5

Record: 27-20, 2nd (Tied/w. Des Moines), 3 GB Cedar Rapids
St. Louis pounded itself to an 8-1 lead over the first 5.5 innings, and then held on for an 8-5 win over Twin Cities at Target Field.
After scoring single runs in each of the first two innings -- Jose Segura hit a solo homer in the first and Daniel Becerra had an RBI single in the second -- the River Walkers seemed to bust the game open when Izaac Pacheco hit a three-run homer off Snow Cats starting pitcher Danny Patino in the fourth.
The gap grew even larger in the sixth.
Jose Segura drove in a pair with a triple off Ruben Lopez.
Segura later scored on an error by Twin Cities first baseman Mike Sartain.
By this time, it was 8-1.
The Cats used the long ball to make it interesting.
Sartain hit a solo homer off Walkers starter Jim Martin in the sixth.
He went deep again in the eighth off Luke Dunkin, this time worth two runs, as the Cats drew to within 8-5.
Juan Yanez connected on an RBI double off Cory Tiller in the same inning.
But that was it.
Martin worked six innings, allowing two runs on five hits.
Luke Dunkin was roughed up for three runs on four hits in his 1.1 innings.
Tiller got one out to get the game to the ninth.
Nick Ruffalo set the Cats down in order in the ninth for his third save.

Walkers news: May 24 -- Twin Cities 3, St. Louis 1

Record: 27-21, 3rd, 4 GB Cedar Rapids
Avery Williams shut St. Louis out into the eighth inning and Twin Cities avoided being swept at home with a 3-1 win over the River Walkers at Target Field (2010).
Williams (2-3) allowed just a pair of singles over the first 7.1 innings. He struck out three and walked one.
The left-handed exited after retiring Nick Shaw to open the top of the eighth.
Elliott Calleson took over and retired two of the next three River Walkers hitters to keep it 3-0.
St. Louis did get a run against Jesse Gaither in the ninth -- pinch-hitter Nathaniel Dixon tripled with one out and scored on a Freudis Nova two-out double -- but Gaither got Jared Thomas to fly out to end it.
It was Gaither's sixth save.
The Snow Cats got all three of their runs against St. Louis starterJesse McNaboe in the bottom of the fifth.
Four of their first five batters of the inning, all reached on hits.
Williams drove in two with a single.
Williams scored the third run, when a throw by catcher Jared Thomas went into center fielder on a steal attempt by Forrest Nance.

Walkers news: May 26 -- Cedar Rapids 7, St. Louis 3

Record: 27-22, 4th, 5 GB Cedar Rapids
Cedar Rapids pounded St. Louis starting pitcher Devin Rogers for six runs in five innings, and the Grapplers rode that to a 7-3 win at Connie Mack Stadium (1960).
Cedar Rapids wasted little time getting to Rogers, putting up four runs in the bottom of the first inning to go up 4-0.
A trio of doubles -- from Travis Swaggerty, Steve Ricca and Miguel Mena -- highlighted the outburst.
Ricca drove in a pair with his two-bagger.
Mena's double plated the inning's final run.
Sandwiched in-between was a run-scoring fly ball by Rece Hinds.
Reigning NL MVP Jose Morillo made it 5-0 in the bottom of the second with a run-scoring single.
Hinds made the final dent with a two-out homer off Rogers in the fifth, making it 6-0.
No out through the first five innings by Grapplers starting pitcher Edwin Rivera, the Walkers broke through for three runs in the top of the sixth.
Izaac Pacheco opened the inning by reaching on an error by Rivera.
Jovan Gill followed with the first St. Louis hit of the game, a single which moved Pacheco to third.
Pacheco scored on a passed ball whle Freudis Nova was at the plate.
Nova then doubled to score Gill.
A Jose Segura fly ball later scored Nova.
A pinch-hit RBI single from Dane Finch off Gil Meier in the eighth made it a 7-3 final.
Rivera (4-3) completed that sixth inning before exiting. He allowed the three runs on two hits. He struck out two and didn't issue a walk.
Victor Ortiz worked two innings of scoreless relief.

Walkers news: May 28 -- Cedar Rapids 8, St. Louis 5

Record: 27-23, 4th, 6 GB Cedar Rapids
Miguel Mena led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a single and later scored on a wild pitch to snap a 3-3 tie, and help propel Cedar Rapids to an 8-5 win over St. Louis in the opening game of a doubleheader at Connie Mack Stadium (1960).
Mena led off the inning with a single off River Walkers starting pitcher Xavier Wigfall.
Wigfall followed that by walking Steven Williams. Wigfall than exited the game.
Nick Ruffalo took over.
He got pinch-hitter Danny Ocampo to hit a fly ball, but it was deep enough to move Mena to third.
Jordan Batista grounded out to put the runners at second and third.
Jose Morillo was issued an intentional walk.
But Ruffalo's first pitch to Eric Gerhardt eluded catcher Jared Thomas, allowing Mena to score what would be the winning run.
The Grapplers added to their lead over the next two innings -- with a run in the seventh (Steven Williams with an RBI single off Luke Dunkin) and three in the eighth (Gerhardt with an RBI single and Arnold Hammond plating two with a double, both off Zachary Stella -- to go up 8-3.
The River Walkers did score twice in the ninth against the Cedar Rapids bullpen.
But St. Louis never got the tying run to the plate.
Grapplers starting pitcher Lorenzo Mascorro allowed three runs on three hits over the first five innings.
Joel Glenn, Victor Ortiz and Antonio Echevaria all followed with a scoreless inning each.
Glenn (2-1) would get the win.
Rhett Daniel started the ninth, but allowed all hits to all three batters he faced.
Closer Keith Kirby had to come on and end it, retiring three straight for his 13th save.

Walkers news: May 28 -- Cedar Rapids 5, St. Louis 3, Game 2

Record: 27-24, 4th, 7 GB Cedar Rapids
Travis Swaggerty capped a four-run bottom of the ninth inning for Cedar Rapids with a two-run, walk-off homer off St. Louis reliever Oscar Martinez to give Twin Cities a 5-3 win, a sweep of their doubleheader and three-game series at Connie Mack Stadium (1960).
With a 3-1 lead, rather than go with struggling closer Scott Rissler, St. Louis opted to send Gil Meier back out for a second inning in the bottom of the ninth after he had retired the Grapplers in order in the eighth.
It didn't work out as planned.
Jordan Batista opened the inning with a double.
Jose Morilla was then given an intentional walk.
Martinez then took over and was promptly bludgeoned.
Steve Ricca greeted him with a double to tie it at 3-3.
Arnold Hammond then reached on an infield single.
Swaggerty ended it on a 3-2 pitch, driving it 409 feet over the high wall in right field.
Cedar Rapids starting pitcher Ivan Alonzo allowed two runs on four hits over the first six innings. He struck out five and walked the same.
Veteran Phil Bickford supplied 1.2 innings of relief, giving up the Walkers final run in the top of the eighth.
Luis Ortiz finished off the eight for the Grapplers.
Cal-fei Liu (3-0) worked a scoreless ninth, which would set himself up to earn the win.
