1923 Season
Major transactions Giants, Phillies Confirm Trade Sunday, November 19th, 1922 The New York Giants swapped 33-year-old right fielder Joe Wood for 26-year-old right fielder Bevo LeBourveau of the Phillies after what Philadelphia officials would only characterize as "difficult" negotiations. Career-to-date Wood is hitting .259 with a total of 23 home runs. In his career LeBourveau has gotten 337 hits with a .297 batting average, scored 160 runs, hit 19 home runs and driven in 161. Philadelphia Wins SP Johnson Sweepstakes Saturday, December 2nd, 1922 Philadelphia Phillies fans welcomed Walter Johnson into the fold, as the veteran announced he'd reached an agreement with Philadelphia brass. Some were critical of the move, insisting that you shouldn't invest $72,545 in a 35-year-old man, no matter how good he might be on the field. The team believes he will deepen their roster and ultimately win a championship. In his career Johnson has crafted a 378-224 record with a 2.53 ERA in 5567 innings. Opposing clubs are batting .248 against him and he has rung up 2967 strikeouts. Philadelphia Wins Lottery for LF Williams Friday, February 2nd, 1923 The Phillies and Ken Williams reached an accord earlier today which brings the left fielder to town for 5 years. Williams will pocket $104,850 total and is widely expected to contribute significantly to the club's playoff drive. In his career Williams is batting .303 with a total of 53 home runs. Veteran MR Bender Settles on Phillies Saturday, February 17th, 1923 The euphoria surrounding a big name deal can sometimes overshadow the deal itself. Occasionally a team will mortgage its future to make a big splash, though no one in Philadelphia was worried about that today as the club finalized terms with Chief Bender. Bender will earn $5,372 per year over 1 year. Taking the hill 676 times in his career, Bender has compiled an ERA of 3.24. He has tossed 4473.1 innings with 2060 strikeouts and 1466 free passes. Opponents have hit .270 against him. He has a record of 257-241. Ruth Joins Kings of Clout with #300 Tuesday, July 15th, 1924 He has done it! Babe Ruth has reached the 300 home run mark. He did it today, but the Brooklyn Robins still dropped the game to the St. Louis Cardinals by the score of 7-1. "Number 300 was hard to come by. I think the pressure was getting to me a little bit. I got a call a few days ago from a couple of guys that have been through this and they just said, 'Keep going, have some fun. Just be you.' I think that helped me a little bit, having those guys make a call to me and try to settle some of the nerves down." On his historic day Ruth was 2-4 with 1 RBI and 1 run scored. Career-to-date Ruth is hitting .330 with a total of 300 home runs.

NABL News: Playoffs begin Wednesday, October 1st, 1924 Some clubs have coasted to make the playoffs -- others have scrapped tooth and nail to get here. After a long, sometimes seemingly endless regular season, it gets down to who can win a short series -- by hook or crook, talent or luck. That's what it takes to capture the North American BaseBall League championship. The top teams will vie in the North American Series starting today: St. Louis Browns versus Brooklyn Robins. Simmons Is AL Swing King Wednesday, October 1st, 1924 When it came to hitting in the American League this season, none did it better than Al Simmons of the Cleveland Indians. He surpassed all his peers with a .378 average to take the 1924 batting crown. The 22-year-old center fielder had 230 hits, including 35 doubles, 8 triples and 21 home runs. Simmons participated in 147 games and also chipped in 125 RBIs and scored 110 times. Jackson Really Swings with .400 Season Wednesday, October 1st, 1924 Joe Jackson is soaking up the praise today after hitting an eye-popping .400 this season. The Chicago Cubs right fielder surpassed even his own expectations. "I thought I could hit .350, maybe," he said, his eyes misting over. "To go beyond that..." His voice trailed off before he continued, "It's like a dream." The Cubs star made the season a nightmare for his opposition, rattling off 228 hits including 37 doubles, 11 triples and 9 home runs. He scored 95 times and collected 94 runs batted in. St. Louis's Bottomley Bats .403 Wednesday, October 1st, 1924 Add the name Jim Bottomley to the list of baseball players to hit .400 or better in a single season. The St. Louis first baseman joined that elite group by hitting a jaw-dropping .403 this year. "To be mentioned among baseball's immortals," said Bottomley, "is beyond my wildest dreams." Bottomley's 255 hits included 50 doubles, 18 triples and 22 home runs. He also scored 113 runs and batted in 113. It belongs Rube Waddell. The star pitcher was inducted this past weekend. All it took to get there was 345 wins. "I always dreamed of being a North American BaseBall League player, but I never dreamed of being in the Hall of Fame," Waddell said, "I could have never envisioned myself standing next to my childhood idols and yet here I am. And to the Hall of Famers sitting behind me, I am truly humbled and in in awe of standing here in front of you." In his career Waddell posted a record of 345-252 and fanned 3478 batters in 5314.1 innings with a 2.74 ERA. At times Rube Waddell fought back tears as he thanked his family and close friends for sticking by him when he had to overcome some difficult personal problems. Summing up his years on the diamond, Waddell offered a hopeful message to the large induction crowd. "I care for this game with my heart and soul. I dedicated my life to being the best pitcher I could be. You leave me humbled and grateful for this honor. I'd like to leave an offering of a message of hope. That is, with the grace of God, you can change your life, whoever you are." Pioneer Award Joe Start Inducted into Hall Of Fame Thursday, January 1st, 1925 One of the best players ever, first baseman Joe Start, has received the ultimate honor for a baseball player -- being inducted into the North American BaseBall League Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony, which was held today, included tributes from his former teammates. One of them recognized his unparalleled work ethic, another his "naturally pure" swing, and yet another, his love for the game. Start received numerous awards during his playing days, but he said, nothing can compare to being enshrined into the Hall of Fame. In a career spanning 377 games, Start batted .323 with 513 hits, 3 home runs, 221 RBIs and 244 runs scored.
