September 1: Recalled P Hayden Johns from AAA Durham.

Time for rosters to expand, and Johns comes back up after being sent down early in the season. He pitched very well in Durham's rotation this year (an 18/118 K/BB in 112 IP with only 83 HA) and really is an MLB pitcher squeezed by all the talent we have. Next year he's either on the big club or traded somewhere, he's too good of an asset to waste in Durham for another season. I'm leaving the extra hitter slot open pending the return of Spencer Torkelson, who'll go on a rehab for about a week to Durham starting tomorrow.

Game 1: Blake Money was looking to go to 19-1, and it looked good for a while as the Rays had a 2-0 lead on a 2-run Jhon Diaz double into the 5th. But Money gave up back-to-back homers to Columbus to give the Lightning a 3-2 lead and he left down by that score after going 6 5 3 3 4 6, technically a quality start but not one that's going to be hung in the Louvre. This left the Rays with one chance to either get him the win or keep him from taking the loss in the top of the 7th, and down to their last out in the inning after putting men on 2nd and 3rd, Gavin Lux drilled a 3-run HR off Sixto Sanchez to put the Rays ahead 5-3 and they went on to win 7-3 after Lux homered again (#36) and Jasson Dominguez had an RBI single. So Money improves to 19-1, for now an MLB record for winning percentage at .950 but of course pending his W-L record the rest of the way. Jose Alvarado and Daniel Espino had scoreless innings and picked up holds, and after the save situation was gone Evan Godwin had a 1-2-3 9th. Lux also doubled in the game to give him 10 total bases and he's neck-and-neck with Vlad Jr for the AL WAR lead at 6.5.

September 2: Sent OF Spencer Torkelson to AAA Durham on a rehab assignment.

It's been a star-crossed 2 years for Tork, missing most of last season with a torn meniscus and then most of this season with a ruptured Achilles tendon. He made it back during the playoffs last year, but this year he'll actually have a few weeks of regular season left to get into game shape (barring further injury, knock on wood). I'll give him a week at Durham which should be enough and then he'll get mixed into the lineup at LF/DH. There's no obvious opening for him, especially with how well the guy who essentially got his at-bats this year, Jhon Diaz, has done, but it's hard to keep a .280, 40-HR guy out of the lineup.

Game 2: Gavin Lux came to the rescue again and the bullpen was lights-out for 5 1/3 innings as the Rays got win #100 on the season with a 7-6 come-from-behind triumph over Columbus. Lux, who had hit a 2-run HR (#37) earlier in the game, doubled home Dane Ayers, who himself led off the inning with a double to break a 6-6 tie in the top of the 9th. Alec Sachais started and just didn't have it tonight in a rare off-night, going 3.2 7 6 6 1 3. But the bullpen was on point, combining for a 5.1 1 0 0 0 9 line. Christian Chamberlain went 1 1/3, Hayden Johns in his first game back went 2 innings with 5 whiffs, Daniel Espino struck out all 3 men he faced in the 8th to pick up his 9th win in relief this season, and JDLC had a 1-2-3 9th for save #29. After Columbus had jumped out to a 3-0 1st inning lead off Sachais, the Rays answered back with 5 in the 3rd on an Isaac DeLeon RBI double, Lux's 2-run shot and a 2-run blast from Yordan Alvarez (#29). And after the Lightning re-took the lead in the 4th the pen held it at 6-5 until Jasson Dominguez homered to tie it up (#19 as a Ray, #27 overall) in the 8th before Lux won it in the 9th.

Game 3: The Rays swept the series with Columbus thanks to a 9-1 rout today. Shane McClanahan was in vintage form today, allowing only a Tanner Craig homer as he went 7 5 1 1 0 5 and is now 13-5 on the season. Jack Filby and Jeremy Bowers had scoreless innings to finish out the game. There were plenty of fine performances from the hitters. Connor Kirkley gave Gavin Lux a day off and went 3-6 with a HR and 2 RBI (Lux himself pinch-hit and stayed red hot by drilling a solo homer, #38), Dane Ayers and Jasson Dominguez each went 2-5 with an RBI and Nate Clark was on base 4 times in 5 trips with 2 walks and 2 singles and stole a base. Rookie Mike Lammers also smacked a 2-run pinch-hit double. All in all, 9 runs and 15 hits was a nice performance on a day several regulars were rested (Yordan Alvarez, Lux, Jhon Diaz, Keibert Ruiz).

Team record: 101-35. Next up: Back to the Trop for Labor Day with Baltimore coming in for 3 games.

Game 1: Former Ray Rafael Devers was a one-man wrecking crew today, bashing 2 homers, 2 doubles and driving in 6 as the Orioles routed the Rays 10-4 at the Trop. Devers took Mack Anglin deep for a 3-run HR in the 1st inning, hit a 2-run double off Jack Leiter in the 5th and added a second homer off Dane Ayers (yes, Dane Ayers) in the 9th. Jorge Soler also went deep twice for Baltimore, including the game-winner in the 4th to break a 4-4 tie. Anglin did not have it today, going 3 7 7 7 0 3 although Jack Leiter allowed both men he put on to start the 4th to score. Leiter had an interesting long relief outing, going 3.2 4 1 1 0 8. Christian Chamberlain continued to excel, going 1 1/3 perfect before Ayers, who is also listed as a pitcher and not just a position player, pitched the 9th and after whiffing Adley Rutschman gave up homers to Devers and Soler. Offensively the Rays kept pace through the first 3 innings but tailed off after that, including Gavin Lux's 39th HR and 3 RBI making it 4 straight games in which Lux has homered and he's now up to 7.0 WAR. Keibert Ruiz's sac fly scored the other run.

Game 2: After the Rays were beaten in a rare rout yesterday the universe self-corrected and gave the Rays a 15-2 drubbing of the Orioles. Jhon Diaz had himself a day, going 3-5 with a double, 2 HR and 3 RBI and not to be outdone Joe Barker (filling for Yordan Alvarez, who sprained his ankle yesterday and is DtD for a few days) was 3-5 as well with 2 HR and 5 RBI, including a 4-run HR in the 7th (also known as a grand slam). Gavin Lux, now leading the AL with 7.2 WAR, was on base 5 times today with 3 walks, 2 singles and he added an RBI, extending his hitting streak to 19 games which is tied for best in the AL this season. Christian Little wasn't as overpowering as usual, but was still effective going 7 4 2 2 1 7 and was relieved after 88 pitches with the big lead as Hayden Johns finished it out with 2 scoreless. Little is now 15-5, 2.48 with 251 Ks in 160 IP.

Game 3: Blake Money was going for win #20, and left with a 5-2 lead after 6 but the bullpen blew it big time as the Rays lost the series to Baltimore 7-5. It looked like the typical Money start where he gave up a couple of runs and the Rays couldn't score enough for him until their last at-bat with him in the game. Baltimore led 2-0 but the Rays came back with a truly mammoth HR from Jasson Dominguez (#20/#28) in the 5th, over the CF structure and estimated at 543 feet to make it 2-1, and then 4 runs in the 6th after Money was finished for the day with a 6 5 2 2 3 6 line. Judson Fabian singled in a run, Jhon Diaz singled in two more and Dane Ayers had a sac fly. But the normally reliable Daniel Espino put two on with two out in the 7th, and old buddy Austin Meadows drilled a 3-run HR to tie the game. Jack Filby then gave up a run in the 8th, and Christian Chamberlain did likewise in the 9th, and despite loading the bases with nobody out in the 7th and putting the first two men on in the 8th, the Rays couldn't score again.

Team record: 102-37. Next up: The homestand continues with 4 games against AL Central leaders Detroit.

Game 1: Only one team in MLB had a winning record against the Rays this season and that was the Detroit Tigers, who took 2 of 3 in Detroit early this season. And until the bottom of the 8th inning, it looked like they'd take 3 of 4. But the Rays rallied for 5 late runs to take a 7-4 win over the Tigers in the opener of their 4-game series. Alec Sachais got the start, and while he wasn't terrible he was unusually wild, walking 4 tonight after coming into the game with only 21 for the season. And those walks cost him, one of which was ahead of an Alex Kirilloff homer (apparently it's ex-Rays homer against their old team week) and then his two walks in the 6th led to another run to put the Rays behind 4-2. Meanwhile the bats couldn't do much with Jon Duplantier, having a great season for the AL Central-leading Tigers. He went 6 3 2 1 2 4 with the only earned run against him Isaac DeLeon's 13th HR. But the Rays had their way against Joel Presley, scoring 5 times in the 8th. Joe Barker's 2-run double tied the game, DeLeon singled in the winning run, and Jasson Dominguez doubled home two more. Hayden Johns took over for Sachais in the 6th and was brilliant, retiring all 7 men he faced including 4 on whiffs to get through the 8th. He picked up his 2nd win of the year after JDLC pitched a scoreless 9th for save #30. Sadly, though, Gavin Lux's 20-game hitting streak came to an end, although not an unproductive one as he walked in his final plate appearance in the 8th to help start the big rally.

September 8: Activated OF Spencer Torkelson from his rehab assignment at AAA.

I was originally going to leave Tork down in Durham for a week, but 5 games was enough to show he was back. After a slow start he's gone 6-for-8 in his last two games with two doubles and a homer. We're going to do a lot of rotating with the lineup over these final 3+ weeks, so Tork should get his ABs.

Game 2: Another big inning won it for the Rays tonight as they scored 4 times in the 6th to break a 2-2 tie and take a 7-2 win over the Tigers. Mike Lammers had his biggest hit as a Ray with a 2-out, 2-run single to put the Rays up 4-2 in that 6th inning and then the next batter Ryan Jeffers blasted his 3rd homer of the year to make it 6-2. Lammers added an RBI double in the 8th for the final run. Shane McClanahan started and was solid, going 6.1 6 2 1 2 4 (it was a Lammers error that cost Mac one of the runs but he more than atoned later) to improve to 14-5 while Evan Godwin and Jack Filby finished off the final 2 2/3. The Rays had scored earlier on a Gavin Lux RBI triple and a Jasson Dominguez RBI single. Spencer Torkelson returned to the lineup for the first time since April, and despite his hot hitting at Durham looked a bit rusty tonight, whiffing 3 times although he singled in his other at-bat.

Game 3: Deja vu all over again as for the second straight day the Rays beat the Tigers 7-2 and for the third straight day they had a big late inning to win the game. Today it was a 5-run 7th inning that broke the 2-2 tie and it was Mr. WPA, Jhon Diaz, who had the big hit, a 2-run HR (#22) to make it 4-2. Diaz leads the AL with 5.48 WPA, over a win better than 2nd place Austin Meadows at 4.45. He's having quite a year, slashing 303/371/546, and ranks 7th in BA, 5th in SLG, 6th in OPS, 5th in steals (30), and 6th in wOBA in the AL, and has 4.3 WAR. All for a guy who was supposed to be the 4th/5th OF before Spencer Torkelson went down with an injury. After Diaz's blast, Mike Lammers had an RBI single and Gavin Lux hit #40 with a man on to complete the rally. Tork actually started the rally with a rare infield single, one of his two hits on the day. Earlier they scored runs on RBI doubles from Jasson Dominguez and Keibert Ruiz in the 5th. In the role of "starting pitcher who needs to keep it close before the offense breaks it open" today was Mack Anglin, who started off with a 5-pitch first inning, took a no-hitter into the 5th and ended up going 6.2 6 2 2 1 7. Alas, he finished one out short of getting the win as Jose Alvarado came on with two on and two out to strike out Levi Usher and pick up the win for himself, #4. Alvarado pitched the 8th and Jeremy Bowers had a 1-2-3 9th to end the game. Also, the Rays now need to go only 12-8 the rest of the way to set the MLB wins record of 117.

Game 4: Well this was the ugly game to end all ugly games as the Rays lost 9-3 to Detroit. 3 players had to leave with injuries, the Rays made 3 errors, 3 Detroit runs scored on either bases-loaded walks or bases-loaded HBPs, there was a catcher's interference, you name it. The big scare came when Christian Little had to leave the game after retiring the first 5 batters (3 via K). He's had a history of late-season injuries that have kept him from the postseason, but fortunately this one is just some hamstring soreness that will keep him out 8 days. Jack Leiter took over for him and will make Little's next scheduled start. Leiter ended up giving up 3 runs in an 8-run 6th inning that saw all the calamities described above. Leiter got the leadoff man and would have had 2 out on a strikeout but Ryan Jeffers was called for catcher's interference on Riley Greene. Of course Greene stole second, then scored on a single and after another single Jack Filby came on. Filby then immediately gave up three straight hits to score two more, got a fielder's choice, and then Christian Chamberlain came in, walked a man to load the bases, hit the next one to force in a run, then walked the next two after that to force in two more, before giving up a single to score the 8th run of the inning and mercifully one of the runners was thrown out on the play. It turned out Chamberlain has a tender shoulder that will sideline him for 6 days. And Dane Ayers had to leave the game with chronic back soreness, which will end his season (it's a 5-week injury and he wasn't going to be on the postseason roster). What a clusterf**k. The Rays actually led 2-1 going into that 6th inning on a Jeffers HR (#4) and Connor Kirkley's RBI single. Nate Clark added an RBI single to score a final meaningless run.

Team record: 105-38. Next up: An off-day, then a trip to play 3 at Yankee Stadium where New York is battling for the second wild card.

First, some news from the league:




September 11: Placed IF/OF Dane Ayers on the 10-day IL with chronic back soreness and P Christian Chamberlain on the 15 day IL with shoulder tendinitis. Recalled P Tyler Gough from AAA Durham and activated SS Ricky Widmar off the 10-day IL.

Gough will give us an extra arm in the pen with Chamberlain out. Widmar still has a couple of days left on his DtD injury so he'll probably sit in the interim.

Game 1: Blake Money became the first (and probably only, next is the currently injured Christian Little at 15) 20-game winner in MLB this year as the Rays beat the Yankees 8-4. Money is now 20-1, but it wasn't easy even though he was staked to a 6-0 lead. The Rays went HR-happy against Yankee pitching, with Nate Clark hitting #36 to make it 1-0 in the 1st, Keibert Ruiz hitting a 3-run shot (#9) in the 2nd to increase the load to 4-0, and Mike Lammers (his first MLB HR) and Gavin Lux (#41) adding solo shots in the 6th. But Money never had a clean inning even while he was keeping New York off the board, and they got to him for 3 in the 5th with a 2-run single from Vlad Jr the big hit. He put one more on in the 6th who Vlad also drove in off Jack Filby to cut it to 6-4 as Money finished a mediocre 5.1 8 4 4 4 6. Evan Godwin was impressive in retiring 4 Yankees, all on strikeouts, and Yordan Alvarez and Jud Fabian hit RBI doubles in the 8th to give the Rays some breathing room. With the 4-run lead Tyler Gough was thrown into the game, but he allowed 2 hits after getting the first batter and with Vlad due Daniel Espino came in and whiffed him and Joe Allen to get out of the 8th, and Jose Alvarado had an uneventful 9th to finish the game.

Game 2: The Rays ran roughshod over the Yankees 12-2 today in large part due to a 7-run 5th inning 2-out rally which broke open a 2-2 game. The inning started off innocently enough, with a man on 1st and 2 out. But then Nate Clark doubled in the runner, Yordan Alvarez singled in Clark, Spencer Torkelson singled for his 3rd hit of the day (his 2-run double in the 1st put the Rays on the board), and Jhon Diaz singled in Alvarez. Jasson Dominguez beat out an infield hit to load the bases, and Mike Lammers brought everyone home with a grand slam, his 2nd MLB HR in as many days. Dominguez added a 2-run shot (#21/#29) and Isaac DeLeon a solo homer (#14) later to round out the scoring. Alec Sachais, coming off a string of mediocre-to-bad starts, didn't start off too great this time either, allowing 2 runs and 6 hits through the first 3 innings. But he settled in and ended up a decent 6 8 2 2 1 5 to go to 13-3. Tyler Gough and Jeremy Bowers combined for the final 3 innings without allowing a run.

Durham Playoff Update: The Bulls had another great regular season at 86-54, making them the #1 seed in the International League playoffs, and of course that means they play Gwinnett, who always seems to end up the wild card. They got off a great start in the opening round with a 9-4 win over the Stripers. Andy Aparicio got the win going 6 5 3 3 2 7, and Shane Sasaki had a monster game, going 4-5 with 2 doubles, a homer, and 2 RBI. Carlos Perez, Christian Knapczyk (who had only 2 all season) and Victor Barillas all homered as well.

Game 3: The Rays held on to beat the Yankees 6-5, sweeping the series and knocking the Yankees out of the second wild card spot for the moment. Jasson Dominguez was the big star today, dooming his former team with a pair of 2-run HRs in the 2nd and 4th off Kodi Whitley. The pair of longballs give Dominguez 23 with the Rays and 31 overall including his time with the Yankees (incidentally the guy he was traded for, Vidal Brujan, is out injured for the Yankees after playing extremely well for them over the last couple of months). Nate Clark (another former Yankee property and who was acquired when we traded Dominguez back to the Yankees) had a 2-run double in the 5th to make it 6-1. Shane McClanahan got the start and was brilliant today, going 7 5 1 1 3 7 and going to 15-5. But Hayden Johns was most definitely not brilliant, as he put four men on in the 8th and all came around to score before Evan Godwin finally got him out of the inning. Jasseel De La Cruz came in and locked it down in the 9th, including having to retire the tough Vlad Jr on a fly ball and whiffing the also-tough Joe Allen to end the game and get save #31. Ricky Widmar returned to the lineup and singled in his first at-bat but ended up 1-5.

Team record: 108-38, they only need to go 9-7 the rest of the way to set the MLB wins record. Next up is 3 games in Toronto.

Durham Playoff Update: Holy comebacks, Batman! Trailing 7-1 going into the bottom of the 8th, Durham scored 5 times to cut the Gwinnett lead to 7-6, and then Sheldon Neuse homered leading off bottom of the 9th to tie it and send it to extras, where Luis Berdin singled in Christian Knapczyk in the bottom of the 11th to give the Bulls an 8-7 win and a 2-0 lead in their International League best-of-5 opening-round series. Jeremy Bienick and Danny Ceja were roughed up for 7 runs in 6 2/3 but Erick Figueroa held the fort in the 8th and 9th and Steve Saucedo pitched a scoreless 10th and 11th to get the win. Carlos Perez drove in a pair and Shane Sasaki was once again a beast, on base 5 times in 7 plate appearances with 2 hits, 3 walks, a steal and an RBI. The Bulls will look to complete the sweep in 2 days at Gwinnett with Malachi Benford on the mound.

Game 1: The Rays romped 9-1 over the Blue Jays as they continue to close in on the MLB single-season wins record with #109. Judson Fabian hit a 2-run double in the 1st to put them up to stay, and they got HRs from Jhon Diaz (#23), Keibert Ruiz (#10), Jasson Dominguez (#24/#32) and Nate Clark (#37). Mack Anglin cruised with all the support, going 7 4 1 0 2 4, improving to 10-5 and lowering his ERA below 5 to 4.78. Jeremy Bowers and Hayden Johns each pitched a scoreless inning to finish the game. Diaz had to leave with back stiffness, which will make him DtD for 9 days. I'm considering putting him on the IL but I'd rather not take Luis Berdin away from the Bulls in the playoffs right now.

Game 2: With Christian Little missing a start due to a sore hamstring, Jack Leiter got the call back to the rotation today and boy did he ever respond. Leiter twirled a 3-hit shutout with 0 walks and 10 Ks on 109 pitches in a truly masterful performance (game score of 91). He's now 12-4 as the Rays scored 8 times in the 5th in an 8-0 win over the Blue Jays. The offense started slowly, no-hit through 4 innings, but Mike Lammers led off the 5th inning with his 3rd homer of the week and his MLB career, Gavin Lux blasted #42 with a man on, Jud Fabian singled in a run, and then Jasson Dominguez hit a 3-run blast, homering for the 4th straight day with 5 over that span and increasing his totals to 25 with the Rays and 33 overall. Keibert Ruiz added an RBI single for good measure as the Rays went from 0 to 60 in one inning. That's win #110, with only 7 more needed from their final 14 for the record. We did have one scare, though. Ricky Widmar was hit on the hand with a pitch and had to leave the game. X-rays after the game were negative, and he has a contusion which will keep him out 8 games. We'll probably need to get someone up from Durham with Jhon Diaz out as well.

Durham Playoff Update: The Bulls are back where they belong, in the International League Championship Series after an 8-5 win over Gwinnett and a sweep of their opening round best-of-5 series. The win marked the 12th straight in the postseason for the Bulls, who swept their way through last year's playoffs and came from 0-2 down to win the IL title in 2026. For a while it looked like Gwinnett would turn the tables after Durham's big Game 2 comeback as the Bulls blew a 4-0 lead in the 8th inning and the Stripers equalized. But Durham hit Gwinnett for 4 runs in the 9th, including a Randy Arozarena RBI double to win it. Luis Berdin hit a 2-run HR in the 1st inning to put the Bulls ahead early, and series MVP Shane Sasaki knocked in a pair including one in the 9th. Steve Saucedo vultured the win from Malachi Benford (6.2 5 3 3 1 8) after giving up the tying run in the 8th. The Bulls will face either Pawtucket or Toledo in the finals, with the PawSox currently holding a 2-1 series lead.

Game 3: The Rays looked primed for a sweep of Toronto, but Jasseel De La Cruz gave up a 2-run HR to Will Benson in the bottom of the 9th to tie the game at 3, and the Jays scored off Evan Godwin in the 10th to send the Rays down to a rare defeat, 4-3. JDLC was the obvious culprit, blowing his 4th save in 35 attempts this season, but a fair share of the blame has to go to the offense, which scored 3 times in the 1st inning and did virtually nothing after that. Spencer Torkelson singled home a run and Judson Fabian followed with HR #17 to make it 3-0 off Jays starter Will Frisch, but Frisch shut them down for the next 7 innings allowing only 5 hits in total. Blake Money was even better, though, and deserved his 21st win of the season after going 7 1 1 1 3 7. Jose Alvarado got them through the 8th, but after striking out the first batter JDLC walked Greyson Jenista and then served up the homer to Benson. Evan Godwin came on in the 10th, walked the leadoff man and gave up a single, but then got a double play and it looked like he might get out of it but Justin Ellison singled in the winning run.

Team record: 110-39. Next up: The road trip continues with 3 at Fenway Park against the Red Sox.

September 19: Placed Ricky Widmar on the 10-day IL retroactive to September 16, recalled P Cole Patten from AAA Durham.

Game 1: We were rained out on Monday, so we're playing a split doubleheader today at Fenway and in the first game the Rays took a 4-2 decision. Christian Little, over his hamstring issues, started and went 5 6 2 2 1 8 on 96 pitches, allowing a homer to former Ray Abraham Toro. Isaac DeLeon put the Rays on the board in the 3rd with HR #15, Jasson Dominguez tied the game in the 5th with an RBI single, and Nate Clark had the game winner with a 7th-inning RBI knock. Keibert Ruiz singled in a run in the 8th for insurance. The win went to Jeremy Bowers, his first as a Ray, for a 1-2-3 6th, while Daniel Espino, Jose Alvarado and JDLC did their thing with the latter picking up save #32 and bouncing back from his blown save the other day.

Game 2: The Rays continue to keep their date with history as they swept the doubleheader from the Red Sox with a 6-3 win, #112 of the season and 5 shy of setting the MLB record with 12 games to go. After a rough 4-start stretch, Alec Sachais turned in his second straight excellent start, going 7 2 2 2 1 5 and not allowing the Sox a hit after Yoan Moncada's first-inning 2-run HR. He's now 14-3, 2.93. Hayden Johns had a scoreless 8th despite retiring only one batter (he got a DP and a runner thrown out on the bases) and Evan Godwin gave up a run in the 9th. Isaac DeLeon led off the game with HR #16, giving him dingers in both ends of the DH, Yordan Alvarez followed in the 1st with a 2-run shot (#30), and Mike Lammers had a big 2-run double in the 6th to make a 3-2 game 5-2. They scored later in the inning on David Dahl's dropped fly ball.

Game 3: Shane McClanahan didn't really have it tonight and the Rays fell 7-3 to Boston. Like yesterday Boston got a 2-run HR in the 1st off the Rays starter, but unlike yesterday when Alec Sachais settled down, Mac didn't today and ended up 5.1 6 6 6 5 6 with the walks a particular problem. The Rays did jump out to a 2-0 first inning lead when Nate Clark took Tyler Glasnow deep for #38 with a man on, but the former Ray shut down his old team until Judson Fabian hit #18 in the 7th. Cole Patten made his season debut with a 1-2-3 7th, and Tyler Gough had a 1-2-3 2K 8th mopping up.

Game 1: Take a bow, Nate Clark. The Rays' DH, who had been scuffling of late and seeing his BA drop below .280, belted 3 homers today including a 3-run shot in the bottom of the 10th to give the Rays a come-from-behind 8-5 win and deal Baltimore's playoff hopes a blow. Clark, who now has 41 for the year, homered in his final 3 at-bats, going back-to-back with Gavin Lux's 43rd in the 6th to put the Rays up 4-3. But yours truly foolishly brought Mack Anglin out for the 7th on 93 pitches and Anglin put the first two batters on. Jose Alvarado retired the next two, but gave up a 2-run double to Adley Rutschman to give Baltimore the lead. After Jack Filby struck out the side in the top of the 8th, Clark hit the second of his homers in the bottom to tie it up and set up his heroics in the 10th. Daniel Espino pitched the final two innings to get relief win #10 of the season. It was a 2-man offense tonight as Lux's 2-run double scored the first 2 Tampa Bay runs of the game.

Durham Playoff Update: The Bulls opened up their IL Championship series with Toledo, who came from 0-2 down to beat Pawtucket in five games to reach the finals. And the Bulls' 12-game playoff win streak is over as the Mud Hens beat Durham 6-5 in 14 innings. Aidan Meola had given the Bulls a 5-2 lead with a 3-run HR in the 5th but Andy Aparicio, who had started off brilliantly with 8 whiffs through 4 innings, couldn't hold the lead in the 6th and Toledo tied it up. The winning run scored when Carlos Perez mishandled a squibber in front of the plate allowing the man to score from 3rd. They'll try to tie it up tomorrow behind Jeremy Bienick.

MLB Retirement(s) of note: Stephen Strasburg hung up his spikes. He had spent the year in the Rockies' system trying a comeback, but his stuff degraded to 25, so it was time to retire. Also, longtime Royals SS Adalberto Mondesi retired at 33 after spending the year in the Yankees' system. Speaking of in the Yankees' system, Jordan Romano retired as well, whom readers of this save will recall beat the Rays and Tyler Glasnow twice with Toronto in the 2022 ALDS including the decisive Game 5. Former Ray reliever Hunter Wood, known for his mullet, is also a player no more.

Game 2: The Rays notched win #114 today, one shy of the team record in 2023 and two shy of the MLB record, with a 12-1 thumping of Baltimore. Blake Money was dominant until he had to leave in the 6th after tweaking his back, going 5.1 2 1 1 0 8 to go to 21-1, 2.84. The back injury is moderate DtD for a week, so with only a final weekend game in Baltimore as a potential start for him, this will probably end his season and if it does he sets the MLB winning percentage record at .955 with that 21-1 mark. Cole Patten pitched the final 3 2/3, allowing only a hit and a walk and whiffing 4 for his first MLB save. Isaac DeLeon paced the offense with the best day of his young MLB career, homering to lead off the game, doubling, and then homering again with a man on to give him 18 for the season. Nate Clark also homered again, giving him 5 in his last three games and 42 for the season, and Mike Lammers hit a solo shot (#4), his first at the Trop. Spencer Torkelson hasn't hit much since coming back from injury but did walk twice with the bases loaded today, while Jasson Dominguez drove in 4 with a bases-clearing double in to cap a 5-run 1st inning and an RBI single. The good news for the Orioles was that the Yankees lost in Detroit so they don't fall any farther back of the second wild card at 1 1/2.

Durham Playoff Update: The Bulls nearly blew another big lead but hung to win 6-5 to even their IL Championship series with Toledo at a game apiece. They were outhit 13-4 but received 7 walks from Mud Hens pitchers and blasted two big homers, a 3-run shot by Christian Knapczyk to cap a 5-run 2nd inning, and Aiden Meola's second longball in as many days which turned out to be the game-winner and put them up 6-2. With most of the top bullpen pitchers burned in the 14-inning Game 1, Erick Figueroa came on in the 8th and gave up 3 runs, and Taylor Guilbeau put men on 1st and 3rd in the 9th before the Bulls had to turn to their scheduled Game 3 starter, Malachi Benford to get the final two outs. He got the first when the runner on 3rd tried to score on a suicide squeeze and the pitch was missed with the runner tagged out, and then got a fly ball to end the game. Benford only threw 5 pitches so he may still be good to go in Game 3 in two days, if not Mike Bayley will get the start.

Game 3: From here on out this season every Rays win is historic, and today's 5-3 triumph over Baltimore tied the team record for wins in a season at 115 set in 2023. They can tie the MLB record last set by the 2001 Seattle Mariners with a win tomorrow, and with seven games left a second win of course would set the record. Another quality start from Jack Leiter and 3 more homers led them to victory today. Leiter went 6 6 3 2 2 4 today to go to 13-4, coming out for the 7th on 85 pitches but giving up a CJ Chatham homer to lead off the inning and resulting in his exit. Evan Godwin retired the side with a couple of whiffs after that, Daniel Espino struck out the side after giving up a hit in the 8th, and JDLC went 1-2-3 with a pair of his own whiffs for save #33. On offense, Ryan Jeffers hit HR #5 to put them on the board in the 3rd, and Joe Barker gave them the lead in 4th singling in Judson Fabian who had doubled. After Baltimore tied it at 2 in the 5th, Fabian answered with HR #19 and after Jasson Dominguez tripled Spencer Torkelson singled him home. Chatham's homer made it 4-3, but Nate Clark stayed scorching hot (and probably has nailed down AL player of the week) by homering for the fourth straight game (#43) with six over that stretch and giving the Rays an 8th-inning insurance run.

Game 4: Wow. History was made today in emphatic fashion as the Rays set a team wins record and tied the MLB record with a 12-0 blowout of Baltimore, their 116th victory of the season. With six games left it's not really a question of whether they'll break the record but whether they'll win 120. Christian Little was untouchable again, going 6 4 0 0 1 12, now 16-5, 2.40 with 274 Ks in 174 innings. Hayden Johns finished the team shutout with 3 innings of his own, getting the save. There were plenty of batters having big days, and Nate Clark also made history with 2 more HRs today, giving him 8 in his last 5 games, each of which has featured a longball. Only Frank Howard in 1968 and Barry Bonds in 2001 have achieved this feat. Clark is now up to 45 on the season and is now only one shy of Carlos Pena's single-season team record of 46 set in 2007. Jasson Dominguez finished a single short of the cycle, driving in 4 runs including HR #26/#34. And Judson Fabian was 3 for 4 hit a HR (#20), double (#40) and 3 RBI. It's a rare event in OOTP when one team has all 3 top performances of the day, but today they did:

Durham Playoff Update: The Bulls are on the brink after a 4-2 loss in Toledo, putting the Mud Hens up 2-1 in the best-of-5 IL Championship series. Durham took an early 2-0 lead on doubles by Carlos Perez and Luis Berdin in the 1st, and then a Perez RBI double in the 3rd, but Mike Bayley lost the plate in the 4th, walking two men with the bases loaded to let Toledo tie, and then giving up a leadoff double in the 6th which came around to score against Danny Ceja, who gave up his own run in the 7th. Malachi Benford will try to save the season tomorrow for Durham.

First off, the least surprising Player of the Week award ever:



Game 1: They did it! The Rays became the best regular season team of the 162-game era by setting the MLB record for wins in a season with #117, an 8-4 win over the Oakland A's. They eclipsed the 1906 Cubs (who still hold the winning percentage record of . 763, even if the Rays win out they'll only be .753) and the 2001 Mariners who each won 116. Their current winning percentage of .745 would be the second-best in modern MLB history, behind those 1906 Cubs. Tonight's win sounded comfortable but it wasn't as the Rays trailed 3-2 going into the 6th and it was 3-3 going into the bottom of the 7th. But who else than the ludicrously hot Nate Clark would strike the decisive blow? Clark homered for the 9th time in 6 games (#46) leading off the 7th to put the Rays ahead to stay 4-3. They would go on to score twice more in the inning on a Mike Lammers sac fly and when Jasson Dominguez scored on a wild pitch. Gavin Lux then led off the 8th with HR #44 and Lammers would walk with the bases loaded for 2 more to make it 8-3. Earlier, Isaac DeLeon had provided the Rays' first 3 runs with a solo HR leading off the game (#19), an RBI single in the 2nd and an RBI groundout in the 6th to tie it. Alec Sachais started and looked really good (6 5 3 3 1 9) but was victimized by a homer after his lone walk, and two singles wrapped around a stolen base. Daniel Espino came on for the 7th, retired the first two batters, but left with back stiffness. It's minimal but for a week so we'll probably just rest him for the final 5 games (ditto for Judson Fabian, who left in the 7th with a similar ailment with a similar diagnosis, his season is over at 296/386/479 with 20 HR). Jack Filby got the final out in the 7th for the win, Jose Alvarado pitched a scoreless 8th and even though the save situation was gone, JDLC was given the honor of finishing off the historic win and although the leadoff double he allowed scored, he got the final 3 outs.

Durham Playoff Update: There will be no Game 5 of the IL Championship series as the Bulls lost a tough one to Toledo 4-3, making the Mud Hens IL Champions. They were done in by a former Rays farmhand, Jose Pena, who drove in the go-ahead run and what turned out to be the game-winning run. Sam Hilliard's RBI triple and Christian Knapczyk's RBI groundout gave the Bulls a brief 2-1 lead in the 2nd, but Toledo tied in the 2nd and then Pena got his winning hit in the 4th off Malachi Benford. Sheldon Neuse homered in the 6th to bring the Bulls back within 4-3, but they couldn't get Shane Sasaki home from 3rd with only 1 out in the 9th.

Game 2: You didn't think the Rays would slack off after setting the single-season wins record, did you? Not tonight at least as they topped the A's 4-1. Shane McClanahan, in what was probably his final start of the season, turned in one of his best performances of the year going 6 3 0 0 2 8 and upping his record to 16-6, 4.10. Despite the W/L record Mac hasn't been as consistently effective as he was last year, and the case can be made that he should be the #4 playoff starter behind Little, Money and Sachais. However, he's the only lefty of the group and if our ALDS opponent is the Yankees the case can be made for him starting against that lefty-heavy team at the Trop in Game 1 or 2. Jack Filby and Evan Godwin had scoreless innings and then Tyler Gough was given a chance to close it out up 4-0. He struck out the first man, but loaded the bases and gave up a hit to bring the go-ahead run to the plate. Oakland sent up lefty slugger Kyle Tucker to pinch-hit so I countered with Jeremy Bowers and JB got the whiff to end the game and nab his 2nd save. The offense all came from a welcome source: Spencer Torkelson. Tork hasn't hit with much power since coming back earlier this month after missing most the season so it was great to see him launch a 3-run HR in the 4th, his first since returning and his 2nd of the year. For good measure he added an RBI single in the 6th. Speaking of the Yankees earlier, even though they lost tonight so did Cleveland and Baltimore, meaning they're 2 1/2 up for the second wild card with only 4 games left (5 each for CLE/BAL) so there's about a 98% chance they travel to Minnesota for the WC game to see who will face the Rays in the ALDS.

September 27: Optioned Ps Cole Patten and Tyler Gough to AAA Durham, activated SS Ricky Widmar and P Christian Chamberlain from the IL.

It's good to get Widmar back, we'll get him right back in the lineup to shake off any rust from the last couple of weeks before the playoffs start.

Game 3: Someone famous recently said something to the effect of "There will be so much winning, you'll get tired of all the winning". Perhaps that's the case for some of you with this year's Rays team as they won again for win #119 of the season 3-1 over Oakland. Mack Anglin pitched his best game of the year going 7 3 0 0 2 10 to end his season 11-5, 4.61. Between his injuries and his struggles after returning from injury he kind of became the forgotten man of the rotation but as recently as last year he was considered the team's #2 or #3 starter. He's pitched quite well over the last two months and today capped it off. He'll still probably be left off the postseason roster or relegated to long relief since he still remains the #5 choice with the emergence of Blake Money and Alec Sachais this year but he'll still be an important part of the 2029 team or prime trade bait given our embarrassment of riches. Jose Alvarado had a scoreless 8th (lowering his ERA to 2.98, a long time coming after some early-season blowups) and JDLC gave up a leadoff homer to Will Smith to spoil the shutout but got the next 3 A's for save #34. The 3 runs came via 3 solo homers: Jasson Dominguez (#27/#35), Isaac DeLeon (#20, not bad for a guy who played about 50% of the time, and Joe Barker (#13, also not bad for a guy who has 178 AB). The Yankees won while Cleveland and Baltimore lost so their magic number for clinching the second wild card is 1, so all the races in the AL are effectively over.

Team record: 119-40. Next up: An off-day, then we close out the regular season with 3 games in Baltimore.

Game 1: Cleveland lost last night, so the Rays did the Yankees a favor by beating Baltimore 6-1 tonight to eliminate the Orioles as well, meaning the Yankees will travel to Minnesota next week to play the wild card game for the right to face the Rays. And the guy one of those teams will be facing in Game 1 is Christian Little, who concluded his Cy Young-elect season with a 5 4 1 1 0 8 outing to finish 17-5, 2.38, and as the runaway leader in strikeouts (282) and pitcher WAR (7.7). Hayden Johns threw 3 shutout innings and Christian Chamberlain one to finish out the game, while Jasson Dominguez was the star on offense. He slugged a 3-run HR in a 4-run 2nd (#28/#36), and singled in two more in the 5th for a 5-RBI night. Gavin Lux singled in the other run in the 2nd, giving him 111 RBI for the season.

Game 2: They just keep slugging homers and they just keep winning as win #121 was a 9-2 romp over Baltimore. Spencer Torkelson had the big bat today clubbing 2 homers, a solo shot and a 3-run blast. Also going deep were Gavin Lux in the 3rd (#45), Joe Barker in the 5th (#14), and then after Torkelson hit his 3-run shot (#4) in the 8th, Jhon Diaz (#24) and Isaac DeLeon (#21) went back-to-back-to-back with him. Watching all these baseballs leave the yard while he rested between innings was Jack Leiter, with another excellent start of 7.1 6 1 0 1 3 to finish his season 14-4 and bring his ERA below 4 at 3.85. Jeremy Bowers got Leiter out of the 8th but ran into some trouble in the 9th with a run scoring, and Jack Filby got the final two outs to finish the game off.

MLB Playoff Race Update: There's only one thing at stake on the final day tomorrow: The winner of the NL West. San Diego and LA are tied after the Padres beat the Dodgers today, so they'll play a winner-take-all division game tomorrow. The loser will travel to Atlanta to play in the NL Wild Card Game and the winner of that will face St. Louis in the NLDS while tomorrow's Padres-Dodgers winner will start the NLDS in Philadelphia. In the AL, Minnesota is hosting the Yankees in the Wild Card Game for the right to play the Rays, while Texas will start their ALDS in Detroit. Speaking of Texas and their big signing Wander Franco when last we checked in at midseason Wander was hovering around 0 WAR. Well he had a big second half and finished with 3.3 WAR, so he's back to the Wander we all knew and loved and could potentially face in the ALCS.

Dominguez also won AL Rookie of the Month. I hate to say it, but as good as Julio Cedillo was before his season-ending injury, he's been Wally Pipped. Dominguez has now been upgraded by the scouts to 80 power, which translates to 50-HR power by the editor. Add that and his 70-75 defense, and he's going to be darn near impossible to dislodge from the lineup. The question becomes whether Cedillo stays with the team as a 4th/5th OF or he gets traded. As always we have an OF glut, especially with Jhon Diaz's emergence this year and Tork's return from injury. I have some thoughts but I'll save them for my season post-mortem.

October 1: Optioned P Hayden Johns to AAA Durham, recalled P Andy Aparicio to AAA Durham.

One thought for 2029 I'll mention now is about Aparicio, who'll get a start today in the regular season finale. He's pitched two years at Durham now, and I'm not going to send him there again next year even if we have 6 quality starters returning. So my plan is to use him in short relief next year while Shane McClanahan pitches out the final year of his contract and then start him in 2030. His 98-100 MPH fastball will play well in relief, and he's given 75/80 stuff ratings as a reliever. Daniel Espino is projected to command $10M in arbitration next year and as great as he's been this year, I'm already paying JDLC and Alvarado close to that next year and I'm not looking to spend $25M on the bullpen. So Aparicio could very well be in Espino's role next year.

Game 3: The Rays closed out a historic regular season by winning their final 10 games of the season and 122 overall with a 6-3 win over Baltimore. Their 122-40 record represents the most wins in an MLB regular season and their .753 winning percentage is second only to the 1906 Chicago Cubs' .768. (They'd had to have won 125 games to break that record). Today's win came with Andy Aparicio getting his first start since a disastrous string of early season outings that contributed in some part to the team's slow 11-13 start (which meant they went 111-27 over their last 138). For the first four innings it looked like more of the same as Aparicio was touched for 3 runs in 4 innings and the Rays trailed 3-2, but the rookie righty hung in there and ended up a solid 7 4 3 3 1 5 to get his 2nd win of the season. Evan Godwin and Jack Filby got through the 8th, and JDLC finished with 35 saves thanks to a scoreless 9th. The hitters continued to bash the longball, with Jasson Dominguez hitting #29/#37 in the 3rd, Jhon Diaz hitting #25 with a man on in the 5th to give the Rays the lead to stay (fitting for the league leader in WPA), and in the 9th Gavin Lux hit #46 to tie Nate Clark for the team lead and tie himself and Clark with Carlos Pena for the team record, and Mike Lammers hit #5. Unfortunately for Lux, Vlad Jr also homered in the Yankees game today and edged him for the WAR crown in the AL, 8.3 to 8.2. Together with Vlad's better triple crown numbers, it looks like the Yankee 3B will take home his 5th MVP in 7 seasons. Ricky Widmar had the only non-HR RBI for the Rays today. So now it's time for them to back up their regular season dominance with a World Series title; anything less will be a disappointment.

MLB News: The Padres clubbed the Dodgers 13-3 today to clinch the NL West, sending LA to Philadelphia for the NL Wild Card Game.

Numbers befitting a 122-win team. Or should I say 112-win team, since we beat our Pythagorean record by a whopping 10 games. The bullpen really was great after some up-and-down performances in the first half and off the top of my head I can't remember them blowing a game in the second half of the season (at least after the games in Philly). Even our much-maligned defense improved; while an 8th place AL finish in defensive efficiency is nothing to write home about, it's an improvement from the 11th place we held at midseason and our rankings in previous years.

What a season for Gavin Lux, the one big-name bat we've brought in over the last few years that actually exceeded expectations. By contrast, Yordan Alvarez was alright for the second straight season but I expected more than "alright" when bringing him in 2 offseasons ago. He also never seemed to come up with the big hit or big homer, and it's not out of the question we move him this winter. Bobby Witt Jr. was another big disappointment before getting hurt. At the rate he was going he would have ended up with about 2.8 WAR for a full season which is about half of what he had the previous 2 years in KC. He'll be back and starting at 3B but Isaac DeLeon, who took over the position for him, ended up with 0.3 more WAR despite having 100 fewer AB. Keibert Ruiz also had a great second half with an OPS of about 830 after looking washed up in the first. The one player not pictured here because he returned -0.5 WAR was Ryan Jeffers, who hit a measly 186/239/293. I know he's a captain in the clubhouse and all, but those numbers (and a projected $5.5M in arbitration next year) are not going to bring him back, especially with Carlos Perez out of options and needing to be on the roster next season.

No complaints here. Even though we used a traditional closer, 9 pitchers ended up getting saves (several 3-inning jobs with all those blowouts we had). Our top 3 relievers combined for 5.8 WAR, which is pretty, pretty good as it's unusual to have 1 reliever worth 2 or more WAR, let alone 3 who were at or near that number.

For the second straight year it'll be Yankees-Rays in the ALDS as Joe Allen's 2-run single broke a 2-2 tie in the 9th to give the Yankees the win. Despite their middling 84-78 record, this seems a more formidable Yankee team than last year, with Vidal Brujan atop the order and Aaron Judge now healthy. Their pitching remains suspect, however, though Kodi Whitley pitched very well down the stretch.

And Atlanta is on to the NLDS to play St. Louis after a thrilling 6-5 10-inning win. Trailing most of the game, Atlanta tied it in the 7th and then won in the 10th when Jeferson Quero led off with a double and scored on Willy Adames' sac fly. Atlanta is without superstars Ozzie Albies Jr. and Mookie Betts due to injury, so they'll be heavy underdogs against the 109-win Cardinals.

Welp. As the Monty Python troupe said "And now for something completely different". The most dominant team regular season team in the 162-game era were utterly and totally dominated in Game 1 of the ALCS by the Yankees to the tune of 9-0. Now it was a scoreless game until the 6th when Joe Allen homered off Christian Little, and even after Vidal Brujan singled in run #2 in his return to the Trop it was still a game. Little was just fine, whiffing a team playoff record 15 and tying the AL playoff record. But the bullpen imploded in a 6-run 8th to make it a laugher, although in the end it didn't matter as the offense which could score at will all year was completely shut down by Dave Falco. Yes, Dave Falco and his 4.79 ERA. After Ricky Widmar singled to lead off the game for the Rays, they didn't manage another hit (or baserunner) until Keibert Ruiz singled with one out in the 6th and the only managed 5 hits for the game. Meanwhile, Brujan added an insult to injury 3-run HR off Jack Filby in the 6-run 8th and the Rays suddenly find themselves in a near-must-win game tomorrow at the Trop. I'm looking at Shane McClanahan to save us from an 0-2 hole tomorrow.



In the other ALDS, the Rangers grabbed a 1-0 lead over Detroit thanks to Alex McKenna, a 31-year-old rookie who had 7 AB in the regular season who had a 3-run HR off Kumar Rocker and an RBI single. Wander Franco was 0-5 in his Texas playoff debut:

Order restored. After the shock 9-0 loss in Game 1 of the ALDS the Rays snapped back with a blowout of their own, 7-0 over the Yankees behind the best game of the season (and one of the best of his career) from Shane McClanahan, who 1-hit the Yankees over 7 innings and whiffed 11. Alfonso Rivas's 2-out double in the 5th was the only hit the Yankees managed today and the offense woke up to get the series even. Jasson Dominguez was the alarm, with his 2-run HR in the 2nd putting the Rays on the board for the first time this postseason. Isaac DeLeon's sac fly made it 3-0 in the 4th, Nate Clark had an RBI single to make it 4-0 in the 5th and Yordan Alvarez followed Clark with a 2-run homer as part of a 3-hit day to make it a rout. Clark added a sac fly in the 7th for the final run. Jeremy Bowers pitched 2 perfect innings to complete the 1-hitter as the series now shifts to Yankee Stadium in two days' time for Game 3 with Blake Money toeing the rubber.



As for the rest of the DSes, the Rangers are looking strong right now after beating Detroit again, erasing an early deficit in the middle innings behind 3 hits from former Ray Keston Hiura. The Phillies edged the Padres 2-1 behind a strong outing from Corbin Martin and Jordan Groshans' game-winning hit in the 7th. And the Cardinals took the advantage from Atlanta in Game 1 behind the Best Pitcher In Baseball, Jack Flaherty (along with the Best Bullpen In Baseball - their team ERA for the season was right around 3) and a 3-run double from another former Ray, Brandon Marsh. If we get by the Yankees and go all the way it looks like we'll be dealing with former teammates all the way through.

Runs were scarce in the two NLDS games today, with San Diego beating Philly by the same score Philly took Game 1 with to even their series. Reid Detmers was dealing for the Padres, going 7.1 5 1 1 1 6 while Ryan Rolison was a hard-luck loser for Philly at 7 5 2 2 0 7. Meanwhile in St. Louis Brandon Marsh was the hero again as his triple in the bottom of the 9th won the game 2-1 for the Cardinals. Leo Ortega and Pedro Avila each went 6 innings with 1 run allowed for the Cards and Braves respectively.

Well they're up against it now. Victor Robles' walk-off HR in the bottom of the 10th off Jasseel De La Cruz gave the Yankees a 6-5 win Game 3 of the ALDS putting New York up 2-1 and one game away from one of the bigger playoff upsets in MLB history. The 122-win Rays got a lousy start from Blake Money and some lousy work from the bullpen and failed to take advantage of a golden opportunity in the 8th. And while Robles had the game-winner, it was former Ray Vidal Brujan who really killed them today, hitting a 2-run HR off Money in the 5th to put the Yankees up 3-2, tripling in the 6th and scoring to make it 4-2, and hitting a sac fly in the 8th to put the Yankees up 5-4. The Rays kept coming back in this game after blowing an early 2-0 lead they got on a Jhon Diaz groundout and an Isaac DeLeon RBI single. Money couldn't stand prosperity and went 4 4 3 3 5 4 with a hit batter. Mack Anglin got nicked for a run on that Brujan triple and it was 4-2 before Jasson Dominguez hit his 2nd HR of the series to cut it to 4-3. And in the 8th the Rays should have put the game away. Yankee closer Mike Tudor loaded the bases with nobody out, walked Diaz to force in the tying run, but Dominguez and DeLeon whiffed and Keibert Ruiz flew out. After Brujan's sac fly off a largely ineffective Daniel Espino put the Yanks back in front, the Rays came back again in the 9th when Ricky Widmar stole 2nd with 2 out and scored on Yordan Alvarez's single, his 4th hit of the game. But they couldn't score in the 10th and JDLC after getting through the 9th and getting the first two out of the 10th gave up the homer to Robles. Now the season is on the line tomorrow with Alec Sachais in the role of potential savior.



Meanwhile the Rangers swept the Tigers to secure their place in the ALCS and Wander Franco could be going head-to-head with his longtime double play mate Vidal Brujan if the Rays don't win the next two. And it was former Ray Keston Hiura who paced them to the 4-3 win, homering twice including a 2-run shot in the 6th (off yet another ex-Ray, Ben Bowden) to give Texas the win and the sweep.

We're heading back to the Trop for a winner-take-all Game 5 after the Rays downed the Yankees 7-2 behind a great performance from rookie Alec Sachais and some good hitting. Sachais had all the pressure of the world on him: being a rookie, pitching at Yankee Stadium in the playoffs and with his team facing elimination, but he came through with a 6 7 1 1 1 9 performance. Despite the decent amount of baserunners, Sachais came up with the big pitch when he needed it with the only damage an Alfonso Rivas homer in the 4th. Jack Filby's line may not look like much in the boxscore but he came through huge in the 7th, retiring the extremely tough "Killer V's" combo of Vidal Brujan, Victor Robles, and Vlad Guerrero Jr. in order with the game still at 4-1. Jose Alvarado came through big as well, striking out the side in the eighth and keeping it at 4-1. After the Rays made it 7-1 in the top of the 9th, JDLC sat down and Jack Leiter pitched the 9th, allowing a Cade Horton homer that was merely a footnote. The bats got going in the 3rd when the unlikely duo of Keibert Ruiz and Ricky Widmar hit back-to-back homers off Cionel Perez, who relieved Gerrit Cole who left with shoulder tendinitis after 2. Jasson Dominguez had a big RBI double in the 6th to make it 3-1, and Nate Clark had a key RBI double in the 7th which made it 4-1. Jud Fabian singled in a run and Dominguez singled in two more in the 9th to finally make it comfortable. So we're back to the Trop in a pitching rematch of Game 1: Christian Little vs Dave Falco. Will Falco be this year's Jordan Romano, the Blue Jay pitcher who shut them down in Games 1 & 5 of the 2022 ALDS at the Trop? Or will the bats get to him while Little does his thing? Stay tuned in two days.



Over in the NLDS, the Cardinals completed the sweep of Atlanta behind the combination of their great pitching and Brandon Marsh, who was 2-5 with an RBI today and named MVP of the series. St. Louis is the one team I wouldn't want to face in the WS due to their pitching. Meanwhile the Padres-Phillies series remains extraordinarily tight with all 3 games decided by a run as San Diego takes a 2-1 lead. Rookie Mario Martez, who had all of 26 MLB at-bats coming into the postseason, delivered a pinch-hit 2-run double in the 7th to give the Padres the margin of victory. Joey Cantillo will try to close out the series at Petco tomorrow.

The Padres are on to the NLCS to face St. Louis after taking the NLCS 3-1 with a 4-3 win over Philadelphia tonight. All four games were decided by a run and tonight's was the most dramatic of them. Tyler Freeman homered in the top of the 9th to tie the game at 3 but Alexander Vargas's RBI single in the bottom of the frame sent Petco Park into delirium.

It was more relief than elation at the Trop tonight as the Rays took care of the Yankees 8-1 to win their ALDS in the full five games. It would have been tough to lose in the postseason to a team they finished 38 games ahead of, which I'm going to go out on a limb and say is the largest such margin in MLB playoff history. But their talent shone through in the last 2 games and now they're off to face Wander Franco and the Texas Rangers in the ALCS, an outcome the writers couldn't have scripted any other way. Christian Little was his typical dominant self today, going 6.2 4 1 1 3 11 for his first postseason win (he'd had a nasty habit of getting injured around playoff time the last couple of years) but the other star today was Yordan Alvarez. The slugging 1B, whom I've bemoaned for not living up to billing in his 2 seasons with the Rays, came through at the most important time tonight, blasting a 2-run HR in the 1st inning off Dave Falco and serving notice today would not be a repeat of Game 1 when Falco shut them down. Alvarez was 11-22 in the series and was deservedly named MVP. After Cade Horton surprised the Trop crowd with a homer off Little in the 2nd to make it 2-1, the Rays added a run on a Falco wild pitch in the 4th and then got another huge hit, a 2-run 5th inning homer from Judson Fabian that made a close game into a much more comfortable one, especially with Little on the mound. Keibert Ruiz singled home a run in the 7th, and then Ricky Widmar went deep for the second time in the series with a 2-run shot to make the rubble bounce in the 8th. The Yankees did make it marginally interesting in the 8th when they loaded the bases at 6-1 and at least brought the tying run to the on-deck circle, but Daniel Espino snuffed out that rally and had a 1-2-3 9th including getting Vidal Brujan looking to end the game and the series. The ALCS rotation should be Shane McClanahan in Game 1, followed by Blake Money at the Trop, and then Little and Alec Sachais in Games 3 and 4 at Arlington.

Shane McClanahan had a pedestrian (by his standards) regular season after winning the AL Cy Young in 2027, but he's been vintage Mac in this postseason and after shutting down the Yankees in Game 2 of the ALDS he did the same to the Texas Rangers in Game 1 of the ALCS as the Rays took the opener 2-1. Offense was so scarce in this game that the teams combined for 7 hits, with the Rays only managing one after the 2nd inning. McClanahan did not allow a hit until the 4th, and kept the Rangers off the board until one out in the 7th, when Renato Nunez (who stunk with the Rays in a brief stint in 2025 but always seems to hit against them - see also Lewin Diaz) homered to get the Rangers within a run. Daniel Espino took over, got 2 quick outs and then a 1-2-3 8th, and Jasseel De La Cruz had a 1-2-3 9th for the save. They got all the offense they'd need (and all they'd get) in the first two innings when Judson Fabian doubled home Gavin Lux in the 1st and Isaac DeLeon hit his first MLB postseason homer off Will Diaz in the 2nd. A Nate Clark single in the 5th would be all they got the rest of the way, but having come out on top today they won't care. Blake Money will look to rebound from his lousy start in New York tomorrow to try to give the Rays a 2-0 series lead.

Blake Money, ladies and gentlemen. After not pitching well in Game 3 of ALDS after being staked a lead, Money would not repeat that outing but instead thoroughly dominate the Rangers in a Christian Little-like performance. Money went 7 3 1 1 1 13 as the Rays downed the Rangers 5-1 to take a 2-0 lead in the ALCS. Money's only flaw tonight was a wild pitch that put runners on 2nd and 3rd and led to a Josh Jung sac fly in his final inning of work. Daniel Espino had a quick 8-pitch 1-2-3 8th, and although Jasseel De La Cruz put a couple of men on in the 9th, he got out of it with a whiff of Aristides Aquino to end the game. It was billed as a matchup of two of the AL's best young pitchers in Money and Texas's Victor Presas but the Rays jumped all over Presas in the early innings and he was gone by the 3rd. Yordan Alvarez continued his excellent postseason with a 2-out RBI double which was followed by a 2-run Jhon Diaz double to give the Rays a 3-0 1st inning lead. Isaac DeLeon hit his 2nd homer of the postseason in the 2nd to make it 4-0 and Nate Clark went deep in the 3rd for the 5th run. They could have scored more in the 4th and 5th, but left several men on base and thankfully didn't need those runs. So the Rays will now look for a near-insurmountable 3-0 series lead in two days' time in Texas with their ace Little on the mound.



The NLCS got underway with a predictable result as the largely unhittable Jack Flaherty led St. Louis to a Game 1 3-1 win over San Diego. Flaherty, who was 9-1 with a 1.14 ERA in 11 starts this season after (very successfully) coming back from injury, is now 2-0, 0.71 in the postseason with the only run against him tonight an inherited runner Edwin Diaz allowed to score. A Josh Stowers RBI double and a Joey Gallo HR were the big hits for the defending World Series champion Cardinals, as we may be headed to a rematch of the 2026 World Series. It would be interesting to see the irresistible force of the Rays offense go against the immovable object that is Flaherty, but we still have a ways to go.
