St. Louis 6 def. Chicago 5

Of course, why not? We didn’t get enough drama here already, so let’s have the Browns – trailing 5-4 at the middle of the 9th – score 2 to walk it off and win the pennant.

1906 World Series Preview

Well, it may be doomed to be anticlimactic in light of what has gone before, but this still looms as a fascinating contest between two sides that worked incredibly hard to get here, especially with a first World Championship on the line for either franchise.

It certainly lines up as a fairly even match on paper, with both sides solid across the spectrum without having many genuine superstars.

One player who does fall into that category is Boston’s 1B Leon Durham, and if he catches fire then that may prove the difference. With outfielders Vin Campbell and Jerry Browne, as well as shortstop Bill Spiers others to keep an eye on in the Beaneaters lineup. The Browns offence is equally deep, with Tucker Barnhart having a fantastic season, and Bris Lord, Rube Oldring and Ping Bodie all extremely dangerous.

The Beaneaters undoubtedly have the advantage in the pitching ranks, and they did very well to pick up FA Heinie Berger right at the end of the regular season. He more than makes up for the loss of Charlie Smith. Don’t get me wrong, the Browns trio of Kevin Slowey, Hooks Wiltse and Frank Castillo can hold their own, but they do lack that touch of class that Berger, Kent Greenfield and 23-game winner Andy Coakley possess.

And it is for that reason, I’m going to stump for the Bostonites in six tough games.

Looking at L10 the Browns made up a lot of ground. With some help from the Sox.

They were never a huge number of games behind, it was just they were running out of games. Then the Sox just fell in a heap. Here's 09/23 standings. Not much diff from 10/01 apart from the number of games left / magic #.

1906 World Series Game Recaps

October 11th, 1906 World Series Game 1: St. Louis Browns (0-0) @ Boston Beaneaters (0-0)
BSN: Heinie Berger (1-0; 0.00) v SLA: Kevin Slowey (10-6; 2.28)

Late-season signing Heinie Berger’s first FL game was the one that got his Beaneaters into this Series and, while he doesn’t get things all his own way, he keeps his perfect record intact with a complete game win to get Boston an early series lead. David Eckstein goes 3-for-4 with an RBI as the Beaneaters break a 3-3 tie with one in the 6th and stretch their advantage with a deuce in the 7th, and Berger keeps the Browns quiet for the remainder.

FINAL SCORE: Boston 6, St. Louis 3

BOX SCORE

October 12th, 1906 World Series Game 2: St. Louis Browns (0-1) @ Boston Beaneaters (1-0)
BSN: Kent Greenfield (21-15; 3.13) v SLA: Hooks Wiltse (23-14; 2.77)

Two 20-game winners go head-to-head and this one doesn’t disappoint.

The visitors take a 1-0 lead in the 4th on an RBI single by Ping Bodie, a run that holds up all the way to the 7th, when Boston ties it up on a throwing error by Browns catcher Tucker Barnhart. The hosts then bust it open with four in the 8th, with a bases-clearing double by Mike Sharperson doing most of the damage.

The visitors rally in the top 9th, scoring 3 on a two-out bases-loaded two-bagger by Mike Mowrey, but Greenfield gets Jimmy Sebring to ground out and end the game as Boston scrapes through to go 2-0 up heading to the Gateway City.

FINAL SCORE: Boston 5, St. Louis 4

BOX SCORE

October 14th, 1906 World Series Game 3: Boston Beaneaters (2-0) @ St. Louis Browns (0-2)
SLA: Frank Castillo (20-13; 2.84) v BSN: Andy Coakley (23-10; 2.20)

Home field advantage notwithstanding, it doesn’t get any easier here for the Browns as the Beaneaters send another 23-game winner to the mound in Andy Coakley. Still, St. Louis has a 20-game winner of their own going for them in Frank Castillo and once again the game lives up to the hype.

The pitchers dominate thru 6 with the home side looking the more likely to score, having a man thrown out at home trying to do just that in the 3rd. And yet, as is so often the case, it is the other side that breaks the deadlock, with Boston taking a 1-0 lead in the 7th in an identical play to the previous game, with catcher Kelly Stinnett throwing one away trying to catch Campbell stealing third.

The Browns finally get on the scoresheet in the bottom 8th courtesy of a game-tying RBI single by Sebring, and then – after surviving a close call in the top 9th – walk it off 2-1 as Stinnett redeems himself with the game-winning single.

FINAL SCORE: St. Louis 2, Boston 1

BOX SCORE

1906 World Series Game Recaps (cont.)

October 15th, 1906 World Series Game 4: Boston Beaneaters (2-1) @ St. Louis Browns (1-2)
SLA: Kevin Slowey (0-1; 5.62) v BSN: Heinie Berger (1-0; 3.00)

The Beaneaters control this one from the get-go and, despite a late rally by the Browns, get a fairly comfortable win to put them just a game away from glory. Runs in the 2nd on a Warren Cromartie single and again in the 3rd on another one by Leon Durham give them a lead they never really look like relinquishing, and they get out to 5-0 before the hosts score a couple in the 8th and one more in the 9th to make it somewhat respectable. Berger once again goes the distance to keep his perfect record intact and it’s nigh on impossible to see Boston losing from here.

FINAL SCORE: Boston 5, St. Louis 3

BOX SCORE

October 16th, 1906 World Series Game 5: Boston Beaneaters (3-1) @ St. Louis Browns (1-3)
SLA: Hooks Wiltse (0-1; 1.12) v BSN: Kent Greenfield (1-0; 4.00)

For the first half of this one it looks a carbon-copy of the day before, as Boston cruise out to a 3-0 lead and look all set to lock down the Championship. But then the whole game is flipped completely on its head in the 5th when the Browns bats get into Greenfield for 5, three of which come via a bases-loaded double by Sebring. One more in the 7th on a single by Rube Oldring makes sure of it as the Browns send the series back to Boston on more of a knife-edge than it might seem.

FINAL SCORE: St. Louis 6, Boston 3

BOX SCORE

October 18th, 1906 World Series Game 6: St. Louis Browns (2-3) @ Boston Beaneaters (3-2)
BSN: Andy Coakley (0-1; 2.25) v SLA: Frank Castillo (1-0; 0.00)

There’s no questioning the Browns’ heart, but in the end they come up just short and the Beaneaters deservedly earn the club’s first Championship with a gripping and hard-fought win here. An early unearned run gives St. Louis fans plenty of hope until a 3-run 3rd by the home side puts them on top in a messy affair with each side committing 4 errors. Even then, the Browns dig deep and clamber their way back to 3-3 with runs in the 4th and 7th frames, but as has been the case for almost the entire series, Boston finds the ready response with a Sean Burroughs RBI single in the 8th holding up all the way to the final out as Coakley sends them down in order in the 9th to win it all.

A magnificent advertisement for the league, and both teams can hold their heads high for the way this series was contested, but there can only ever be one winner and I congratulate the Beaneaters for their success. Tempus effulgeo to you, Beantown, may you shine as bright as the brightest star.

I said at the start of the year I thought this would be one of the closest seasons yet for the FL, but I never in my wildest dreams imagined it to be as tight-run as it played out. Here’s to many more along those lines.

Boston 4, St. Louis 3

BOX SCORE

Boston Beaneaters win series 4 games to 2.

Series MVP: Vin Campbell (Boston)

There is definitely a bug in this save. After trying to introduce the DH a couple seasons back, this time they tried to expand the league with 2 more teams - in 1907!

Obviously I canned that idea.

I've seen posts that these sorts of things can be caused by evolution and story lines.

I know I'm not going to make it through the full 120 years from 1901 with this save and so I'm not 100% against the idea of straying off the historical path. Just not yet. I am, however, moving things forward a bit faster - I'll be using 1912 LTMs this year and will keep jumping at 2-3 year intervals after that.

The fact remains, however, that this is a historical save and so the expansion of this league should be PRECISELY HISTORICAL as far as the game is concerned.

So it's a pretty major bug.

On a quick scan, I think the Giants and Washington are the only teams without a WBL player who has a significant narrative in that league so far. Given the very different foci of the two projects, I find that fantastic, compelling, and fun.

There's a bigger crossover than may be initially apparent. Remember, the only players I'm excluding are the REALLY good ones, 20-25 career WAR and above or those who got their share of the spotlight the first time around. That leaves a lot of decent everyday players, many of whom would creep into the bottom rungs of your league while being in the upper percentiles of the FL.

But I love the juxtaposition as well, whenever I see one of the guys' names that I remember from here appear in your league I pay special attention.

He kind of snuck in here early days and, in reality, is a bit too good for the FL - as his consistently good performance shows.

A word from the Commish

After much deliberation it has been decided that from 1908 onward the Rookie Draft, which was previously held in June, will be moved to December 1 of each year. Which means the upcoming 1907 Draft will be the last for 18 months.

Thanks

Commissioner Nik Hill
