Bill Terry Drills 3 HR in One Game Wednesday, April 22nd, 1925 Sometimes your best is just not enough. Bill Terry had an outstanding day at Baker Bowl, when he ripped three home runs. Nonetheless, the Philadelphia Phillies fell to the Brooklyn Robins 10-9. Terry had a feast at the plate, pounding everything thrown his way. The 26-year-old first baseman banged out 3 hits in 4 at-bats, scored 3 times and batted in 3 runs. Despite his sensational performance, the Phillies were not able to hold off the Robins. "Baseball is a funny game," Terry said in the post game interview, "You can't dwell on the reasons for the loss. I'm sure there will be days when I go 0-for-4 and we win. These things tend to even out." Bill Terry hit a solo-shot off Rube Schauer in the 1st, flied out in the 3rd, hit a solo-shot off Rube Schauer in the 5th, walked in the 7th and hit a solo-shot off Ed Hawk in the 9th.

Manush Is NL Batting Champ Monday, October 5th, 1925 Heinie Manush of the Giants is the winner of the 1925 National League batting title. Manush finished the season with a .375 batting average in 123 games. The 24-year-old New York center fielder had 191 hits, including 33 doubles, 17 triples and 15 home runs. He also tallied 107 runs and drove in 80 runs. Al Simmons Claims AL Batting Title Monday, October 5th, 1925 Al Simmons of the Cleveland Indians wrapped up a very successful season by winning the American League batting crown. He outpaced all comers with his .399 average. For the season, the Indians left fielder played in 146 games, collected 254 hits, 24 home runs, scored 131 times, and knocked in 108 runs. NABL News: Draft Pool Revealed Saturday, September 12th, 1925 For would-be rookies, a list of whom was announced today by the league, the wait to find out whether or not they have been selected is excruciating. It's tough just getting a scout to notice you, to think you are worth investing an organization's future in. Then draft day arrives and you are snatched up by someone you might not have expected. Some will catch on big; others will be away from home for the first time and will struggle to gain a solid footing in the minors. Still others will battle through, gain that coveted footing and go on to have a solid professional career. The top players available (in no particular order) seem to be: 1. Tommy Thomas, 25 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 2. Chuck Dressen, 26 year-old third baseman out of college. 3. Joe Cronin, 18 year-old second baseman out of high-school. 4. Ethan Allen, 21 year-old center fielder out of college. 5. Alvin Crowder, 26 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 6. Paul Waner, 22 year-old right fielder out of college. 7. Danny Taylor, 24 year-old right fielder out of college. 8. Sam Gibson, 26 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 9. Cuckoo Christensen, 25 year-old left fielder out of college. 10. Babe Herman, 22 year-old first baseman out of college. NABL News: Playoffs begin Monday, October 5th, 1925 Playoff baseball is a being unto itself. It is a mythical creature, a fleeting, mystical force that consumes anyone with a passion for one of the ballclubs vying for championship gold. It sweeps over you, pins you to your seat or kicks you forcibly to your feet in the flash of an instant. Today, the North American BaseBall League gives way to this passion as players, fans and the elite clubs of the league embark on an exciting journey fraught with anguish and ecstasy. Here is the slate for today's games in the North American Series: St. Louis Browns versus Brooklyn Robins.

MVP was Joe Sewell (12 for 28, 2 HR, 12 RBIs) The Browns won the deciding game today 6-1 at Ebbets Field for their 9th North American BaseBall League crown. 1925 Draft NABL News: First-Year Player Draft Monday, October 12th, 1925 The North American BaseBall League amateur draft looms large today. The talent selected could determine the fate of baseball clubs for years to come. In reality it is a lottery. You make your pick and pay your money. Most of the time the teams lose, but occasionally they hit the jackpot and get an impact player. That is what they are hoping for. BNN analysts have rated these players as most likely to be chosen in the early rounds: 1. Sam Gibson, 26 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 2. Lefty Grove, 25 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 3. Jack Cummings, 21 year-old catcher out of college. 4. Danny Taylor, 24 year-old right fielder out of college. 5. Alvin Crowder, 26 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 9. Tommy Thomas, 25 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 10. Paul Waner, 22 year-old right fielder out of college. Draft Results (Round One only)
Major Retirements Heinie Zimmerman (Athletics) 2178 hits, 1113 RBIs, 66 HRs. Del Pratt (Red Sox) 1878 hits, 761 RBIs. Max Flack (Yankees) 1009 hits. Ivey Wingo (Athletics) 1246 hits, 573 RBIs. Ping Bodie (Cleveland) 1032 hits, 540 RBIs. Awards NL Rewards Top Defenders for 1925 Sunday, October 25th, 1925 Making the play is the mark of great defenders. Spearing a liner, diving in the hole or crashing headlong into the wall makes no difference to these awe-inspiring fielders. Magicians they sometimes appear to be, showing up out of nowhere to rob a batter of a hit and to turn a hit into an out. Pitchers love 'em and batters curse 'em. These defensive wizards will collect their 1925 National League Glove Wizard Awards tonight: Pitcher: Henry Keupper (St. Louis Cardinals) Catcher: Wally Schang (Brooklyn Robins) First Baseman: Jim Bottomley (St. Louis Cardinals) Second Baseman: Specs Toporczer (Brooklyn Robins) Third Baseman: Willie Kamm (Philadelphia Phillies) Shortstop: Glenn Wright (Philadelphia Phillies) Left Fielder: Ty Cobb (New York Giants) Center Fielder: Mandy Brooks (Boston Braves) Right Fielder: Harry Rice (St. Louis Cardinals) Year's Best Gloves Selected by American League Sunday, October 25th, 1925 Glove Wizard Awards are the symbol for defensive excellence, a recognition of the best of the best in defense. The American League Glove Wizard Award trophies for 1925 have been awarded to these outstanding fielders: Pitcher: Wiley Taylor (New York Yankees) Catcher: Buck Crouse (Boston Red Sox) First Baseman: Lou Gehrig (Cleveland Indians) Second Baseman: Frankie Frisch (Chicago White Sox) Third Baseman: Pie Traynor (Philadelphia Athletics) Shortstop: Charlie Hollocher (New York Yankees) Left Fielder: Al Simmons (Cleveland Indians) Center Fielder: Earle Combs (New York Yankees) Right Fielder: Goose Goslin (Boston Red Sox) Best Rookie Trophy Presented to Cochrane Monday, October 26th, 1925 New York catcher Mickey Cochrane set the tone for rookies across the National League in 1925 and today was tabbed for the league's Newcomer of the Year Award. He hit .360 in 135 games while collecting 187 hits, 14 home runs, 90 RBIs and scoring 127 runs. American League Picks Best Rookie Monday, October 26th, 1925 The regular season is now history and it's awards time in the American League. This year's winner of the Newcomer of the Year Award is 24-year-old Roy Carlyle of the Philadelphia Athletics. The talented left fielder batted .388, played in 103 games and delivered 155 hits in 400 at-bats. His totals also included 5 home runs, 86 RBIs, 67 runs scored, 21 walks and a .415 OPB. Luque Selected NL's Top Pitcher Wednesday, October 28th, 1925 With speculation about his retirement gaining steam last offseason, Phillies ace Dolf Luque had something to prove. He proved it in award-winning style as he accepted the National League Outstanding Pitcher Award today. The veteran Philadelphia hurler posted a record of 28 wins and 10 losses this year with a 2.87 ERA. In 44 starts he struck out 138 and walked 137 in 376.2 innings. American League Top Pitcher Selected Wednesday, October 28th, 1925 The Philadelphia Athletics have a rising superstar or maybe even a budding Hall-of-Famer in the making. It's Charley Root, this year's American League Outstanding Pitcher Award selection. This blossoming hurler wowed fans, peers and sportswriters with a fabulous performance. Root compiled a 24-14 record in 39 starts, tallied 118 strikeouts in 336 innings and recorded a 3.27 ERA. Other clubs managed only a .259 batting average against him. Babe Ruth Captures Best Bat Trophy Thursday, October 29th, 1925 Brooklyn's Babe Ruth put the wraps on a fine campaign today by winning the 1925 National League Outstanding Hitter Award. The 30-year-old veteran scorched the opposition with a .338 average, picking up 187 hits, 21 doubles, 8 triples, 54 home runs and 153 RBIs, while scoring 170 runs. Cleveland's Gehrig Wins AL Outstanding Hitter Award Thursday, October 29th, 1925 It was a very good year for Cleveland Indians first baseman Lou Gehrig, 1925's American League Outstanding Hitter Award. Gehrig hit .354 with a .443 on-base percentage. He had 197 hits in 557 at-bats, including 32 doubles, 14 triples and 38 home runs. Gehrig drove in 127 runs and scored 110 times in his award-winning season.

1926 NL Batting Title to Bill Terry Friday, October 1st, 1926 No one hit National League pitching at a better clip than Philadelphia's Bill Terry in 1926. Playing in 138 games this year's batting champ registered a .374 average with 181 hits, 12 home runs and 71 RBIs. Thrice as Nice: Gehrig Takes Triple Crown Friday, October 1st, 1926 This season, Lou Gehrig exhibited a rare combination of hitting both for average and power. Indeed, the Cleveland Indians star claimed baseball's Triple Crown, leading the American League in batting average, home runs and RBIs. "I've always taken pride in my ability to hit the ball," Gehrig said. "But honestly I never thought I'd put up numbers like that." He led the American League with a .363 BA, 41 home runs and 125 RBIs. The 23-year-old Indians first baseman is the 6th player in North American BaseBall League history to do this rare feat. Quite a year for quite a player. NABL News: Draft Pool Revealed Sunday, September 12th, 1926 North American BaseBall League announced the 1926 amateur draft pool today, a scant 30 days in advance of the actual draft. For scouts, it is the toughest challenge of the season, trying to come up with an educated guess as to what a young man in his late teens or early twenties is going to do at the professional level a good five years down the road, at best. Some will go on gut instincts; some will rely on years of experience; but most will find it disconcerting how much their team is beholden to Lady Luck. Choose well and they are geniuses; choose poorly and they are unemployed. The top players available (in no particular order) seem to be: 1. Carl Reynolds, 23 year-old right fielder out of college. 2. In the North American BaseBall League playoffs, miracles do happen, but most often it's simply the team that plays better baseball that goes home with the prize -- the much-coveted North American Series championship. Pittsburgh, Chicago, Boston, Washington and Detroit are the first five teams to pick this year. BNN has predicted these players to be among the first ten selected: 1. Danny Taylor, 25 year-old right fielder out of college. 2. Woody English, 20 year-old shortstop out of college. 3. Fred Schulte, 25 year-old center fielder out of college. 4. Ernie Orsatti, 24 year-old right fielder out of college. 5. Carl Reynolds, 23 year-old right fielder out of college. 6. Ben Cantwell, 24 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 7. Sam West, 22 year-old center fielder out of college. 8. Fred Frankhouse, 22 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 9. Red Kress, 19 year-old shortstop out of high-school. 10.
