Joe Sparks 1979
The vault's latest contains two of Sparks's four single-year stints coaching (he was primarily a minor-league manager), much better than the single side view we had before.
1979 White Sox and 1984 Reds, respectively. (Sparks also coached the 1989 Expos and 1990 Yankees.) |

John Van Ornum 1980-84
Spent his entire big league coaching career with the Giants, in the bullpen. Something I only read recently: While a minor leaguer in the Dodgers' system, Van Ornum was the catcher in the original TV "Home Run Derby" series in 1960.
This is one of my photos (taken at Shea Stadium, 1980), feel free to use as needed. Last edited by Merkle923; 08-05-2017 at 11:38 AM. |

Charlie Lau 1969-83
After nine years as a sub catcher and pinch-hitter for a variety of teams, Charlie Lau became the bullpen coach for the Orioles in '69, and then found his calling a year later in Oakland: Hitting Coach.
During his most famous stint, at Kansas City (1971-78) he mentored among others George Brett, then spent three years with the Yankees, and two with the White Sox. He died all too young during Spring Training of 1984. I took these at Yankee Stadium in 1980; feel free to use as needed (and in the first shot, I'm pretty sure that's the then-Yankee catcher, the Johnny Oates - himself later a coach and manager - that he's talking to). Bob Swift, again
He's a Tiger in the Coaches pack and there's a 1959 Kansas City Athletics pic earlier in the thread, but we were finishing off the Topps Vault BE folder on Baseball-Birthdays, and I was able to ID this pic as Swift coaching for the 1960 Washington Senators, completing the list of his coaching stops.
Enjoy. (Or not. [/soft sell]) |

Earl Whitehill
Here is Whitehill as an Indians coach in 1941 and a Phillies coach in 1943.

Alex Monchak 1971
The Oldest Living Coach (age 98) was in the latest Topps Vault release, from his days with Chuck Tanner (the only manager under whom he served, on four teams over 17 seasons) at their first stop together, Chicago.
Don't know exactly when in 1971-1975 these pics are from, as the Sox didn't change their uniform until Tanner went to Oakland, but here's Alex, in both home and road togs: (color adjustments courtesy of…well, me.) ETA: Alex passed away on September 12, 2015. Last edited by Amazin69; 09-29-2015 at 07:21 PM. |

Jim Frey - 1978
Looking for an image of Jim Frey as an Orioles coach from 1978, or at least after they went to the uniform style they were wearing by then. Any help is appreciated!

1980 Padres coaches
Neglected to post these earlier. These three Padres coaches come from the Family Fun Center sheets I purchased recently.
We have Dick Phillips, Don Williams and Chuck Estrada. |

Salty Parker
Topps Vault, today, gave us a couple of shots of the elusive Mr. Parker--one in his second tour of duty with the Angels (1973-74) and one from his coaching gig with the Giants (1958-61).

Roy McMillan 1973-1976
Long sought, at least by me -- Roy McMillan during his tenure as a Mets coach/interim manager.

MLB Lifers, Short-Term Coach
More than just a rich collection of MLB press photos, the Lexibell folders are giving us managers, umpires and a whole bunch of coaches.
Stan Hack, one of the better players of his era not in the Hall of Fame. He spent his entire 16-season playing career (1932-47) with the Cubs, and managed the team from 1954-56, so he looks almost out of place in a Cardinals uniform. Hack served on Fred Hutchinson's staff for 1957 and most of 1958, replacing him for the season's final 10 games (3-7). Last edited by rico43; 01-31-2016 at 11:18 PM. |

Paul Waner Comes out of Retirement
Already inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame, "Big Poison" Paul Waner returned to baseball in 1957 as an organizational hitting instructor for the Milwaukee Braves. While the Braves would go on to win the World Series that season, he would move to the Cardinals, then the Phillies, in a similar capacity before passing away in 1965 at the age of 62.
