NABL News: Draft Pool Revealed Monday, September 12th, 1927 The 1927 amateur draft pool was published today with barely a mention on BNN. But then, fans rarely get drawn into amateur drafts. The players are not known commodities and they're not tangible, recognizable names. They might be five years down the road, but casual fans don't get sucked in by "might be," they get excited about what is happening in the here and now. Over the next 30 days, scouts will assess their possibilities, run mock drafts and formulate their plans. To help them, North American BaseBall League has posted an interactive draft section on its Transactions page, which will be available for 30 days before draft day. The top players available (in no particular order) seem to be: 1. Del Bissonette, 28 year-old first baseman out of college. 2. Vic Sorrell, 26 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 3. Chuck Klein, 22 year-old right fielder out of college. 4. Bill Dickey, 20 year-old catcher out of college. 5. Carl Hubbell, 24 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 6. John Stone, 21 year-old left fielder out of college. 7. Walt Lerian, 24 year-old catcher out of college. 8. Pepper Martin, 23 year-old right fielder out of college. 9. George Earnshaw, 27 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 10. Spud Davis, 22 year-old catcher out of college.

Ruth Leads NL Hitters Monday, October 3rd, 1927 The best batter in the National League in 1927 was Babe Ruth of Brooklyn. He earned the the batting title with 216 hits in 585 at-bats for a .369 average, outpacing all his peers. Playing in 150 games, the 32-year-old center fielder also chalked up 34 doubles, 9 triples, 52 home runs, 149 RBIs and scored 156 runs. Goslin Bats .401 for the Year Monday, October 3rd, 1927 It might look like a typo in this season's stats reports. But the .401 next to the name of Goose Goslin is no mistake. That's his batting average for the recently completed season. Goslin is the newest member of baseball's .400 club. The Boston left fielder tried to downplay the achievement. "It's just a number," he said. Then he admitted with a grin: "Okay, it's a big number!" That number puts Goslin in the record books with some of the game's great players. His other stats during this remarkable season include 250 hits, 35 doubles, 24 triples, 15 home runs, 134 runs and 114 RBIs. NABL News: Playoffs begin Monday, October 3rd, 1927 The teams who survived the hard battles of the regular season now begin their new campaign -- the postseason! The playoffs begin today in North American BaseBall League as the North American Series commences with these match-ups of clubs hoping to win the title: New York Giants versus Cleveland Indians.

Cleveland prevailed over New York today with a 8-7 victory at League Park II. It was the Indians 5th time claiming the title. MVP was Lou Gehrig (13-31, .419, HR, 7 RBIs.) They compiled a 102-52 regular season record and finished in the first spot in the American League pennant chase. NABL News: First-Year Player Draft Wednesday, October 12th, 1927 Lost in all the hoopla of today's amateur draft are the young men who won't be going first, tenth or even fiftieth. Many of them will probably never make North American BaseBall League rosters, but one and all will be spurred on by the possibility that someday they'll be playing on a championship club. Pittsburgh, Chicago, Boston, Washington and Detroit will have the first five choices. BNN analysts report that these players are likely to be high picks in the 1927 draft: 1. Pat Malone, 25 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 2. Carl Hubbell, 24 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 3. Pinky Whitney, 22 year-old third baseman out of college. 4. Awards 1927 Glove Wizard Award Trophies Given out by NL Monday, October 24th, 1927 "Ball hawk" is a good name for the members of the defensive elite, the players who make leather shine. The fielders who crashed the wall, leaped in the air, and dived in the hole better than any others during 1927 have been tabbed as the National League's Glove Wizard Award winners. Here are this year's best: Pitcher: Walter Johnson (Philadelphia Phillies) Catcher: Clyde Sukeforth (Philadelphia Phillies) First Baseman: Jim Bottomley (St. Louis Cardinals) Second Baseman: Billy Rogell (Pittsburgh Pirates) Third Baseman: Willie Kamm (Philadelphia Phillies) Shortstop: Topper Rigney (Brooklyn Robins) Left Fielder: Chick Hafey (Brooklyn Robins) Center Fielder: Alex Metzler (Cincinnati Reds) Right Fielder: Curt Walker (St. Louis Cardinals) AL Announces 1927 Top Gloves Monday, October 24th, 1927 In baseball circles, a player who has good range, a good arm and good hands is a great catch. Clubs strive to be strong in the field, especially "up the middle." Solid defenders can make a difference in the outcome of tight games and tight pennant races. The Glove Wizard Awards for 1927 in the American League go to these standout defenders: Pitcher: Gene Dale (St. Louis Browns) Catcher: Bob O'Farrell (Philadelphia Athletics) First Baseman: Jimmie Dykes (Detroit Tigers) Second Baseman: Freddie Lindstrom (Philadelphia Athletics) Third Baseman: Ossie Bluege (Cleveland Indians) Shortstop: Joe Sewell (St. Louis Browns) Left Fielder: Al Simmons (Cleveland Indians) Center Fielder: Taylor Douthit (Cleveland Indians) Right Fielder: Paul Waner (Philadelphia Athletics) Chicago Second Baseman Wins NL Rookie of the Year Tuesday, October 25th, 1927 The National League Newcomer of the Year Award winner for 1927 is Jay Partridge of the Chicago Cubs. Ott Is AL's #1 Rookie Tuesday, October 25th, 1927 1927 was a much better year than Mel Ott expected. This spring he was overjoyed at just making the Boston roster. Not only did he make the team, he was the starting right fielder. Then it got even better. In his debut season, Ott hit .350 with 194 hits in 555 at-bats, 15 home runs, 96 RBIs, 63 bases on balls and a .415 on-base percentage -- good enough numbers to be honored with the American League Newcomer of the Year Award. King of the Hill Announced by National League Thursday, October 27th, 1927 With speculation about his retirement gaining steam last offseason, Giants ace Marty O'Toole had something to prove. He proved it in award-winning style as he accepted the National League Outstanding Pitcher Award today. The veteran New York hurler posted a record of 21 wins and 15 losses this year with a 3.16 ERA. In 38 starts he struck out 144 and walked 139 in 336 innings. American League Pitcher of the Year Named Thursday, October 27th, 1927 The Outstanding Pitcher Award for 1927 has been presented and the American League winner is Eddie Rommel of Cleveland. "It's always nice to receive an award like this," said Rommel. "I just hope I can improve on my performance next year and be in the running again," the Indians star told reporters. Rommel excelled with an impressive 24-6 record in 37 starts. In 295 innings he yielded 294 hits and 69 walks, while striking out 67 and compiling a fine 2.81 ERA Brooklyn's Ruth Takes 1927 Outstanding Hitter Award Friday, October 28th, 1927 It's been a year of triumph for veteran Babe Ruth of the Brooklyn Robins as he hit his way to the 1927 National League Outstanding Hitter Award. The 32-year-old veteran compiled a .369 average and .470 on-base percentage by putting together 216 hits, 34 doubles, 9 triples, 52 home runs and 117 walks. He also scored 156 times and drove in 149 runs. Lou Gehrig Captures AL Outstanding Hitter Award Friday, October 28th, 1927 1927 was a fine year for Cleveland first baseman Lou Gehrig and it was topped off today with the announcement that he is the winner of the American League Outstanding Hitter Award. Gehrig starred this season with a .376 batting average, 221 hits, 35 home runs, 138 RBIs, .472 OBP and 150 runs scored. Senators News It's Official: SP Donohue Signs with Senators Tuesday, November 22nd, 1927 The Washington Senators have called a press conference later today to announce the signing of starting pitcher Pete Donohue to a 8-year, $128,000 contract.
