American League Player of the Week
Nearing the end of his playing career, St. Louis Browns outfielder Patsy Donovan showed that he still had something left in the tank, as he strung together a fine hitting week to take home American League Player of the Week honors. In picking up the award, Donovan batted .458 (11 for 24) with 4 Runs, 5 RBIs, 2 Doubles, and 2 Walks for a slash line of .458/.500/.542 which was good for a 215 OPS+ and 0.5 WAR.

Power Rankings
With only 1 game left before the playoffs begin, the final regular season weekly Power Rankings list is out. To be expected, the two Boston playoff-bound teams are at the top of the list.

Player Development Update
Head scout Dave Radovanovic provided the Boston American's front office with his latest assessment of player development. Would like to have seen Jiggs Donahue not have the eye rating fall, and no idea why Clarence Currie was hit so hard with talent drops.

While his Philadelphia Phillies team has had a disappointing season, pitcher Otto Hess is doing all he can to keep the team headed in the right direction. In picking up National League Rookie of the Month honors, Hess went 4-3 in 7 starts, tossing 66 1/3 innings in which he allowed just 17 earned runs, had a 1.12 WHIP, a .259 BABIP, and finished with 1.4 WAR on the month.

National League Batter of the Month - August 1902
At this point it really should be renamed the Nap Lajoie batting award rather than the National League Batter of the Month. In picking up his 5th BofM award in his young career, Lajoie hit .402 (45 for 112) with 13 Runs, 27 RBIs, 9 Doubles, 2 Triples, 1 Homerun, and 3 Walks for a slash line of .402/.425/.545 which resulted in a 184 OPS+ and 1.7 WAR. Lajoie is a hitting machine and sure is fun to watch his career develop.

Game 140: Cleveland Bronchos vs. Boston Americans
The final game of the regular season ended in a 3 to 2 win for the Cleveland Bronchos (63-77) over the Boston Americans (94-46). Not the way that the 6,804 home fans wanted to see their team head into the playoffs.
Pitcher Jim Hughes (17-16) picked up the win by allowing 2 runs (1 earned) on 7 hits, 8 walks, and 2 hit batsmen to finish with a Game Score of 62. Cy Young (22-11) was tagged with the loss after giving up 3 earned runs on 9 hits and 2 walks; Game Score of 59. The Cleveland hitting attack was led by Jim Hughes (2 for 3, Homerun, 1 Run, 1 RBI, and 1 Walk), Erve Beck (2 for 4, Double, 1 RBI), and Watty Lee (1 for 4, Homerun, 1 Run, 1 RBI). Boston's limited hitting was provided by Jiggs Donahue (1 for 3, 1 Run, 1 Walk) and Chick Stahl (2 for 3, 1 RBI, 2 Walks). Special Note: Jim Hughes tied a team record with 8 walks. Player of the Game: Jim Hughes

1902 Playoffs: Boston Americans vs. Boston Beaneaters
The 1902 Playoffs are set with the Boston Americans facing off against the Boston Beaneaters. The Americans, at least on paper, are the favorites heading into the World Series, but stranger things have happened so, as the saying goes, this is why they play the game!

Boston Americans Regular Season Snapshot
Now the regular season is over, wanted to share a snapshot of how the Boston Americans fared this season. As shown, it was a tremendous season in nearly all facets of the game. A few observations: an amazing home record and extra-inning games; a surprising lower than expected win % in 1-run games; very little power on offense; and a pitching staff that gave up the long-ball with few strikeouts far too often.

Boston Americans Regular Season - Batting
Batting stats for the Boston American players for the 1902 regular season sorted by at-bats. With 7 players having 3.5+ WAR, it was a tremendously successful season. Frank Chance was a great surprise to see his significant improvement over the previous season. Newcomer Chick Stahl had a solid first season with the team, but his ending 4.9 WAR was a little disappointing given the hot start he had. I am still a Jesse Hoffmeister fan, and would like to find a way to give him more at-bats. I need to figure out if Jiggs Donahue is my long-term solution at 1st base.

Boston Americans Regular Season - Pitching
With four (4) pitchers achieving 22+ wins this season, the overall view of the rotation is nothing short of a success. Sam Leever (23-8) fit in nicely with the rotation and was a solid addition for the team. Noodles Hahn (22-13) was at times a little shaky, but overall remained the #1 starter for the team. Jesse Tannehill (24-11) was the winningest pitcher on the team with 24 wins. Cy Young (22-11) is starting to show his age but remained a solid #4 in the rotation. I will need to start looking for Young's eventual replacement.

Top pitching game performances for the 1902 season. As expected, Rube Waddell is the most frequent name on the list and clearly the best pitcher in baseball!

1902 World Series -- Game 2
The Beaneaters (2-0) did it again, as they score a run in the bottom of the 9th inning to get the win over the Americans (0-2) by a 3 to 2 score.
Pitcher Bill Bernhard (1-0) was dialed in, allowing 2 runs (1 earned) on 5 hits and 2 walks for a Game Score of 72. Jesse Tannehill (0-1) was burdened with the loss after serving up 3 earned runs on 9 hits, 1 walk, and 1 hit batsman; Game Score of 51. Dave Brain (2 for 4, Double, 1 RBI) provided the Americans with some offense. Player of the Game: Bill Bernhard
