But then, fans rarely get drawn into amateur drafts. The players are not known commodities and they're not tangible, recognizable names. They might be five years down the road, but casual fans don't get sucked in by "might be," they get excited about what is happening in the here and now. Over the next 30 days, scouts will assess their possibilities, run mock drafts and formulate their plans. The top players available (in no particular order) seem to be: 1. Sam Leslie, 23 year-old left fielder out of college. 2. Roy Johnson, 25 year-old right fielder out of college. 3. Al Grabowski, 27 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 4. To the fan of the perennial loser, it's a time to moan again about their team's misfortune. To the fan whose club defines success by the number of North American Series championship trophies lining their clubhouse walls, anything short of the ultimate victory is a disaster. This is playoff baseball. Baseball lovers can't help but be consumed by it in some way or another. There is nothing better than playoff baseball. These North American Series battles will unfold later today: St. Louis Cardinals versus New York Yankees.

Senators Off Seasons Moves
Athletics Send Schulte to Washington Saturday, November 24th, 1928 It won't turn either team into an instant contender or provide a huge franchise shakeup, but the Philadelphia Athletics and Washington Senators finalized a trade today. Philadelphia will send 32-year-old catcher Johnny Schulte to the Senators, while the Athletics will receive 25-year-old second baseman Carl Lind and 24-year-old minor league center fielder Max West. "We think this is a deal that will help out both teams and we're glad to get it done," said the Athletics general manager). The trade is expected to be officially completed later today with the players to join their new ball clubs by the end of the day. Over his 302-game career Schulte has compiled a .260 batting average and collected 251 hits, 24 home runs and 164 RBIs. In his 204-game career Lind has hit .288 with 198 hits, 2 home runs, and 63 RBIs and has scored 83 runs. Signed Davey Claire (3B) to a $9768/2 Year Deal Signed Walter Johnson (P) to a $40,000/4 year deal. Cubs get our 2 round pick. Ray Blades signs with Cleveland. We get a supplemental first round pick.

NABL News: Playoffs begin Monday, October 7th, 1929 Another regular season has played out, and the stage is set for the next level. The North American BaseBall League playoffs are here. It has been a long, hard grind for the contending clubs to make the North American Series. All the playoff-bound teams want to cap off the year in glorious style by capturing the prestigious 1929 North American Series trophy. Each team will begin that journey today with these playoff games: Boston Red Sox versus Brooklyn Robins. NABL News: Draft Pool Revealed Thursday, September 12th, 1929 For the entrants in this year's rookie draft, released today by the league, the possibilities are endless. Some will immediately seize their opportunity to play in the bigs with a venom, doggedly working their way up through the system to arrive on the pro circuit in three to five years, if they are lucky. Others will struggle, have their hopes dashed, reborn and dashed again, all the while not fully giving up on the dream. Still others will take each day as it comes, while not losing sight of the end-game. They will figure it out, quietly work their way into the professional ranks and have solid, if not spectacular careers in North American BaseBall League. At any rate, teams now can scout the draft pool for the next 30 days. The top players available (in no particular order) seem to be: 1. Dusty Cooke, 22 year-old right fielder out of college. 2. Smead Jolley, 27 year-old right fielder out of college. 3. Lefty Gomez, 20 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 4. Luke Appling, 22 year-old shortstop out of college. 5. Earl Averill, 27 year-old center fielder out of college. 6. Bruce Campbell, 19 year-old left fielder out of high-school. 7. Ben Chapman, 20 year-old third baseman out of college. 8. George Puccinelli, 22 year-old left fielder out of college. 9. Hank Greenberg, 18 year-old first baseman out of high-school. 10. Wally Berger, 23 year-old center fielder out of college.
