Season's Best Fielders Selected by NL Monday, October 25th, 1875: "Hit 'em where they ain't" is a great hitting philosophy, but it doesn't always work when a fielder can seemingly appear out of nowhere to make the play. These magicians are often taken for granted as the season grinds along, but today they take center stage. The National League Glove Wizard Award selections for 1875 are: Pitcher: Mike Golden (Cincinnati Reds) Catcher: Deacon White (Boston Red Caps) First Baseman: Cap Anson (Cincinnati Reds) Second Baseman: Horatio Munn (Chicago White Stockings) Third Baseman: Ezra Sutton (Brooklyn Atlantics) Shortstop: George Wright (Boston Red Caps) Left Fielder: Tom York (Chicago White Stockings) Center Fielder: George Hall (Cincinnati Reds) Right Fielder: William Rexter (Boston Red Caps) AL Glove Wizard Award Winners Announced Monday, October 25th, 1875: Who are the Glove Wizard Award winners? They are the guys that steal outs. They make spectacular plays, but they also consistently make the routine plays. This year in the American League these defensive stalwarts made a name for themselves with their gloves: Pitcher: Harry Arundel (Baltimore Orioles) Catcher: Doug Allison (St. Louis Brown Stockings) First Baseman: Jim Devlin (Philadelphia Athletics) Second Baseman: Ross Barnes (Philadelphia Athletics) Third Baseman: Herm Doscher (Baltimore Orioles) Shortstop: Chick Fulmer (Baltimore Orioles) Left Fielder: Ned Cuthbert (St. Louis Brown Stockings) Center Fielder: Oscar Walker (Philadelphia Athletics) Right Fielder: Jack Manning (Baltimore Orioles) NL Newcomer of the Year Award Announced Tuesday, October 26th, 1875: Sam Weaver was pure poison to National League hitters this year. The Chicago White Stockings felt very secure when they sent him out to the hill. The 20-year-old starter went after National League hitters with a vengeance and earned the 1875 Newcomer of the Year Award. AL #1 Newcomer Named Tuesday, October 26th, 1875: Harry Arundel's age didn't show very often in his first year. He performed more like a veteran on the hill for the Baltimore Orioles and today he walked away with the 1875 American League Newcomer of the Year Award. #1 NL Hurler Named Thursday, October 28th, 1875: He's in the early phase of his career, but this past season Sam Weaver performed like a veteran on the hill for the Chicago White Stockings and walked away with the National League Outstanding Pitcher Award in the process. The 20-year-old White Stockings star fashioned a 36-19 won-loss record in 1875 with a 1.47 ERA. In 478 innings of work and 57 starts, Weaver struck out 116 while giving up 486 hits and 25 walks. He held opposing batters to a .241 average. AL Gives Outstanding Pitcher Award Thursday, October 28th, 1875: This season's American League Outstanding Pitcher Award trophy went to Rynie Wolters, the ace of the Philadelphia pitching staff. He dominated all season, finishing with 28 wins and 24 losses and a 1.86 ERA. In 54 starts he worked a total of 435.2 innings, striking out 32, while walking 17. Other clubs managed to hit only .259 against him. NL Top Hitter, 1875 Choice Is White Friday, October 29th, 1875: What a way to finish off the year -- being honored with the 1875 Outstanding Hitter Award in the National League. It had already been a very special season for Boston's Deacon White, but today's announcement really put the icing on his cake. All season long Deacon White gave opposing pitchers fits by hitting .331 as he collected 87 hits, 11 doubles, 2 triples, 2 home runs and 31 RBIs. Superb Year For Manning, Wins Outstanding Hitter Award Friday, October 29th, 1875: Jack Manning of the Baltimore Orioles proved that you can step out of the shadows and onto the stage if you've got the talent and the drive to hone your skills. Hard work, long hours and a tireless resolve paid off for him today in the form of the American League Outstanding Hitter Award. Manning hit for a .352 average while collecting 82 hits, 16 doubles, 1 triple, no home runs, 40 RBIs and scoring 47 times. Draft NABL News: First-Year Player Draft Monday, November 1st, 1875: It's draft day in the NABL.
