And, being the usual size for an ad banner, it means it can be easily ignored.

Hopefully that's just a mistaken impression.
Not a fan of those modes either but it’s actually more likely they’ve saved several of those games than destroyed them. Without that added revenue, several series may have gone away but the continued investment is made due to the revenue-friendly modes. That said, I’d rather madden, FIFA, NHL, etc spent more time on franchise mode and less on their card collecting mini-games but it’s not happening.

It’s not even about gambling. I gamble and even gamble on sports.
It’s the company they choose affilitiate with. They are a scummy company with misleading advertising who refuse to caragorize themselves as a gambling company and are resisting and spending heavily on lobbying against regulation.

This is actually a longstanding myth that the companies exploit to justify the outrageous revenues they make off these modes.

Actually, in the case of OOTPD, it could well be true. Because the company is small and their products are niche. My guess is that if the devs came to the community and explained that they needed a microtransaction mode to fund the other games, people would probably give them a break on it. I would. Even though I wouldn't actually believe that the funds would help in developing the non-transaction games, they would help keep the lights on.

But companies like EA or the big Korean mobile companies? They milk those games like cash cows, taking in tens of millions of dollars in more than they spend on development.

As just one example, Madden UT took in $800 million in revenue last year. I guarantee you that no more than a tiny fraction of that went to development. In fact, paradoxically, often the games that make the most money have the LEAST development, because they just turn into profit centers and it costs a lot less money to churn out new cards than it does to implement real game features.

Sony is now heading down the same road with The Show. That's a game that doesn't even need to turn a profit, but every year it's more focused on microtransactions than the year before. And, predictably, all the modes that do not generate micotransactions have become second-class citizens. One they cancelled entirely a month before launch, after giving a laughable excuse, and the other they cancelled and didn't even tell people about until after the game went live.

Even worse, they have now started dumbing the game down, making it easier for people with less skill. The reason why is obvious.

That's what microtransactions do. They don't just exploit people with gambling problems and create competitive gameplay imbalances. They distort developer priorities.

The same would happen here unless the devs make a truly superhuman effort to resist strong temptations.

To each his own...

I don't like draft kings and could do without the ad but it won't stop me from buying OOTP. Why? Because I buy OOTPB because I enjoy the game. I don't buy it to support OOTPD, I buy it for my enjoyment which in turn supports OOTPD.

So I'm not going to give up a game that I like because OOTPD takes revenue from a company I don't like. If I refused to use every product that takes ads from companies I didn't like I'm going to end up very bored, isolated and probably even hungry.

But as I said, to each his own.

This is what worries me about micro transactions being added to OOTPBB. Not because I feel they will immediately be corrupted, but because the call of large profits is corrupting. Can Markus resist? I don't know, I hope so.

Well, it's not anything we need to worry about in advance. We don't know what they are planning and there's nothing to react to.

I am sure they know how most of us would feel about this.

OTOH, if it comes down to doing that or ending development, I think most players would prefer that they continue development. This is not a mass-market game, and the devs really are to be commended for working on it as long and hard as they have.

I don't think that I said that they don't make crazy money off of those modes - they do. I do think that the cost of the licenses (especially), as well as gameplay development were taking games into a place where they weren't going to be as profitable as needed as we moved forward with new systems every 6 years or so. Games like the NHL series would very likely have gone away, or changed dramatically (every 2 years, etc - although that would require a new license agreement, as EA's states they must release yearly at this point) without the new revenue stream. Pro Evolution Soccer is another that is likely saved by that mode. I don't play them, and don't like them, but games would not exist today without them.

Draft Kings Ad

No big deal here.....at all
I have never even played Draft KIngs or any other game like that. But I never gamble so, a nothing burger here, UNLESS ads start popping up inside the game.

Draftkings and fanduel are terrible companies which know that 1% of the players are taking 90% of the profits. 80% of all players have lost more money than they earn. It's completely rigged. It's very disappointing that OOTP developments would allow its customers and fans be exploited by these companies by allowing them to advertise here. I know that advertisement is the way of the world, but show some integrity!

You see? That is, you don't see? You've already stopped noticing that ad at the top of this screen, haven't you?

Those same statistics hold true with poker as well. Doesn't make the companies that offer poker, either online or in a "brick & mortar" setting "evil". I can't stand people that want to get in the way of consensual transactions.

Who's talking about poker? wasn't online poker regulated several years ago because the super users had bots at every table.

The fact is that these companies and their elite users prey on the casual fan. It wouldn't be a "consensual transaction" if that casual fan knew the statistics.

It's disappointing to see how perverse the whole system has gotten. Money corrupts. That is why sports gambling is now legal and now it's gotten OOTPD. This is a horrible partnership.

No online poker wasn't regulated several years ago. Instead, a Republican Congressman who was planning a run for president put an amendment into a Port Authority Bill the day before it had to be passed which made it illegal for banks to transfer money to and from online gambling sites. He did this in hopes of appealing to the religious right but ended up never running. Either way it forced me and many other professional poker players to move to another country so we can continue our chosen careers.

As for not knowing the statistics, I doubt many people who gamble in a casino know the statistics either. That doesn't make the transaction "non-consensual" since they are choosing to remain ignorant. People who try to get in the way of two other parties' consensual transaction when it has no affect on them are the nut low.

since you're a "professional" gambler, no wonder you're so opposed to my stance. You're literally the type of person that would prey on the casual fan.

I'm not a professional gambler any more than a day trader is a professional gambler. Every decision you make in life is a gamble. You are gambling that it is the best decision you could make. I believe that government has no right getting in the way of voluntary transactions between consenting adults.

Draft Kings Ad

Just as soon as the price of OOTP baseball takes a upward turn because so many ppl got upset over a ad, even claiming they'll never buy OOTP products, so they removed them....those same ppl will be whining about the price increase. Since when is it a crime for a business to use ads for extra influx of cash. Supreme Court has since ruled gambling is legal since the stupid thread started & are you same ppl still upset over a banner ad? Well get ready for everything in the world to have gambling ads on it because that day is coming. Good Luck in the whine community

By your logic, where’s the Budweiser, Marlboro, and pornhub ads? Bring them all on lol.

The price isn’t going to go up because people complained about ads. That’s ridiculous. The price will always be the most it can be in order to turn the most profit. Same concept for setting ticket prices in the game. Set them too high, people stop paying. Ads have nothing to do with this lol. And btw, they should increase the price, dammit it’s a great game
