The Saint John Sea Dogs advance to Round 2 with a hard fought series win over Chicoutimi. The Sea Dogs are led by their 17 year old phenom captain Gerard Buckley.

More on Buckley in this thread. https://forums.ootpdevelopments.com/...d.php?t=316136

Justin Dufresne's goaltending heroics helped the Halifax Mooseheads take down the Quebec Remparts in Round 1. A 6th round pick by Montreal in the 2024 NHL Draft, Dufresne could see his prospect stock rise if he can continue his hot play in the playoffs.

WHL 1st Round Game 7 Results

Moose Jaw 4 Saskatoon 3 OT (MJ wins series 4-3)
Vancouver 4 Everett 2 (VAN wins series 4-3)
Spokane 4 Seattle 3 (SPO wins series 4-3)

Vancouver comes back from being down 3-1 in the series to defeat Everett in 7 games and avoid one of the biggest upsets in WHL (and CHL) history.

Kooper Gizowski did not want to have to go back to his hometown of Edmonton and watch the Oil Kings playoff run. The Blues 3rd round pick in the 2023 draft, Gizwoski's 10 points in 7 games led the Giants in the 1st round to help avoid the embarassment of losing to an outgunned Everett team.

The Giants cruised through the regular season with an astonishing 59-9-0 record, one of the best regular seasons ever in all of the CHL. Will the Giants be able to win the WHL?

Another young phenom, the 1st overall pick in the 2024 WHL Bantam Draft, Robert Mayer could not be stopped by the Seattle Thunderbirds. In 7 games, Mayer put up 13 points to lead all Chief attackers. We will see if Mayer has any more tricks up his sleeve in his very impressive rookie campaign.

It's every kids hockey dream to score the overtime game winner in Game 7 of a playoff series. Denton Mateychuk of the Moose Jaw Warriors lived that dream, with the biggest goal of his career coming against the Saskatoon Blades in overtime of game 7. It simply doesn't get any better than that. A back and forth series throughout, the Warriors now advance into round 2.

OHL 2nd Round Matchups

Sudbury (29-35-4) at Niagara (41-23-4)
North Bay (33-26-9) at Oshawa (39-23-6)

Guelph (32-28-8) at Owen Sound (57-6-5)
Kitchener (39-26-3) at Windsor (40-25-3)

The key for Owen Sound will be to stop Guelph's big star player, Boyd Murphy. Murphy's 52 goals led the OHL and he is a stud center and projected 1st round NHL pick on the 1st line. Flanked by former Attack player Pete Wade (6'1" 220 lbs.) and Greame Barnaby (6'2" 226), Guelph relies on its top line to provide much of the offence. Liam Searle (6'4" 230 lbs.) is another big bodied skilled winger who the Attack will have to slow down.

Guelph has more depth, especially on defence than Saginaw did. The Storm feature a good defence corps with plenty of experience and savvy. Can they stop the Attack's high powered offence? The Attack offence averaged a staggering 5.75 goals per game during the regular season and put up 26 more in a 5 game 1st round series.

The Storm are a physical team throughout their lineup and led the OHL in hits during the regular season. Guelph will have to try to impose their physical will over Owen Sound and try to intimidate them from playing their high tempo game.

Between the pipes, Guelph has two experienced goalies who could get hot at any time.

QMJHL 2nd Round Matchups

Gatineau (33-33-2) at Sherbrooke (54-9-5)
Shawinigan (46-20-2) at Val D'Or (37-26-5)

Saint John (30-36-2) at Charlottetown (52-13-3)
Halifax (32-32-4) at Moncton (42-24-2)

These matchups look like mismatches on paper but the Shawinigan - Val D'Or series has the potential to be a close one.

OHL 2nd Round Game 1 Results

Niagara 3 Sudbury 2 (NIA leads 1-0)
Oshawa 3 North Bay 1 (OSH leads 1-0)

Owen Sound 5 Guelph 1 (OS leads 1-0)
Kitchener 4 Windsor 2 (KIT leads 1-0)

One roster change for Owen Sound, Brodie Bostrom struggled a bit in the first round on defence so 17 year old Michael Blaisdell was inserted into his place in the lineup. Also sticking with the hot hand right now with Terry Fulgham in net.

Guelph goalie Tommy Shipley delivers an outstanding performance in game 2, making 33 saves for the win. Owen Sound career PIM leader and captain, Madden Steen goes down to a hip flexor strain injury and will be out for 1-2 weeks. Brody Bostrom or Luke Rovatti will replace him in the lineup. Big loss for Owen Sound for the remainder of the series!

North Bay 2 Oshawa 1 (NB leads 3-1) - UPSET ALERT!!
Owen Sound 3 Guelph 0 (series tied 2-2)
Kitchener 3 Windsor 1 (KIT wins series 4-0)

Owen Sound peppers Guelph outshooting them 45-11 in Game 4. Shipley was solid again with 42 saves for Guelph. Murphy misses Game 4, one wonders how many more games the star will miss.

Kitchener makes short work of the star less Spitfires in 4 straight games to advance to the West final.

The Kitchener Rangers finished the second half of the season on absolute fire and have carried that into the playoffs. Taking full advantage of an injury depleted Windsor squad, the #4 seeded Rangers are showing that they are for real and a serious threat to win the OHL. Kitchener is led by a strong defence corps with captain Colton James being the #1 NA skater for the upcoming 2025 NHL Draft and Alexander Foroshchuk being one of the premier talents in the OHL.

QMJHL Round 2 Game 4 Results

Charlottetown 4 Saint John 0 (CHA wins series 4-0)
Moncton 3 Halifax 0 (MON leads 3-1)
Gatineau 3 Sherbrooke 1 (series tied 2-2)
Shawinigan 5 Val D'Or 2 (series tied 2-2)

WHL Round 2 Game 4 Results

Calgary 6 Swift Current 3 (CAL wins series 4-0)
Moose Jaw 3 Edmonton 2 (MJ leads 3-1)
Victoria 6 Vancouver 3 (VIC leads 3-1) - MAJOR UPSET ALERT!!
Tri-City 8 Spokane 6 (TC wins series 4-0)

OHL Round 2 Game 5 Results

Sudbury 5 Niagara 2 (SUD leads 3-2) - MAJOR UPSET ALERT!!
Oshawa 2 North Bay 0 (NB leads 3-2) - UPSET ALERT!!
Owen Sound 2 Guelph 1 (OS leads 3-2)

Shipley almost steals Game 5 for Guelph making 36 saves in a close loss. Owen Sound shooters can't seem to figure Shipley out but still find themselves up 3-2 in the series. Murphy comes back for Game 5 but was largely ineffective.

Out in the Q, Charlottetown seems to have found their playoff mojo with a quick sweep over Gerard Buckley's Saint John SeaDogs. The SeaDogs survived a 7 game series in the opening round but simply ran out of gas and didn't challenge the Islanders at all. Sherbrooke is in quite the fight with Gatineau.

Meanwhile in the WHL, so much for the big Calgary-Swift Current battle. The Hitmen dominate the Broncos to claim a spot in the next round. Tri-City used their high powered offence to quickly dispatch the Spokane Chiefs in a sweep. Vancouver is on MAJOR UPSET ALERT again! Can they come back from another 3-1 deficit?

The Charlottetown Islanders are led by two NHL draft picks, forwards Robert Caluano and Larry Sellers. This dynamic duo is leading the Islanders on their playoff march and can rest up a bit until the next round. The Islanders haven't faced a real quality opponent just yet, we will see how they fare against stronger opposition. They will face the winner of the Halifax-Moncton series.

The Swift Current Broncos were supposed to give the Calgary Hitmen all they could handle in the second round but the exact opposite happened. The Hitmen were never really challenged and are led by top forwards, Lucas Smith and Stuart Russel.

Calgary has to be considered the favourite to come out of the WHL after the dismantling of SC. They will now face the winner of the Moose Jaw-Edmonton series.

The Tri-City Americans feature one of the high powered attacks in the entire CHL. Scoring goals in bunches during these playoffs, they are led by projected top 10 NHL draft pick, Steve Kardashian. Thus far, Kelowna and Spokane have failed to slow this superstar down. Kardashian hasn't been alone though as he has plenty of company lighting the lamp.
