Rain, Rain, Go Away ...
April 23rd saw the first suspended game in WBL history (we've had a couple of rainouts). The skies began to empty in San Francisco in the 8th, with Portland ahead 3-2.
The game was finished on the 24th, with the scoreline unchanged. Bert Blyleven got the win, moving to 3-1 on the year, and Johan Santana picked up his 10th save of the season, while Jim Devlin--despite a solid showing--took the loss, falling to 0-2 on the young season.

Series VI Featured Game: Memphis Red Sox @ Homestead Grays, Game 1
Two WBL debuts with vastly different results, and a turn on the mound from the Splendid Splinter.
The opening game of Memphis' visit to Homestead saw a WBL debut from the Red Sox' Mel Parnell as he faced off against Homestead's Carlos Zambrano. Zambrano gave up a run in the top of the 2nd, but the wheels fell off the following inning when the Red Sox' Reggie Smith hit a solo HR, Wade Boggs drove in 2 with a single, and Jim Pagliaroni hit a 499 foot, 3-run bomb to put Memphis ahead 7-0. Parnell gave up 3 runs in the bottom of the 3rd, on RBI's by Pops Stargell and Josh Gibson, and a wild pitch that scored Stargell. And, when he couldn't get out of the bottom of the 4th after an RBI double from Andrew McCutchen and a 2-run single from Gibson, Memphis gave in to Ted Williams' constant demand to be given a chance on the mound. It did not go well. Williams gave up a sacrifice fly and two singles before getting out of the inning, which ended with Homestead having grabbed the lead back, 8-7. Zambrano couldn't stand the good fortune, giving up 2 hits and a walk before being relieved by Hal Carlson. He gave up a 2-run single from Pagliaroni and a 2-run double by Dustin Pedroia, putting Memphis back on top, 11-8. Williams wouldn't survive the next inning, giving up four consecutive hits before giving way to another Memphis debutante, Joe Borowski. At the end of the inning, the game was tied at 11. And suddenly, the pitchers remembered how to throw the ball, and the game stayed scoreless until the top of the 8th, when Eddie Rosario brought in Manny Ramirez on a sacrifice fly, giving Memphis a 1 run lead. Jonathan Papelbon gave up a couple hits, but escaped the bottom of the 9th unscathed, allowing Memphis to escape with the victory despite having given up leads of 7 and 3 runs. Gibson went 3-for-5 with 4 RBI's for Homestead, but wasn't around for the end, having been tossed from the game for arguing a strike call in the bottom of the 7th. Stargell and McCutcheon added 3 hits each for the Grays. For Memphis, Pagliaroni had easily the best game of his career, going 4-for-5 with 6 RBIs. Once Zambrano was gone, the Grays' pitchers did alright, with Carlson, Daniel Hudson (who took the loss), and Michael Jackson combining to allow 2 runs (1 earned) over 5 innings. But they couldn't overcome Zambrano's 10 earned runs in his 4 innings of work. Still, Zambrano's game score of 8 was higher than Parnell's of 6. Williams, who gave up 6 hits and 3 runs in 2/3 of an inning, may not see the mound again, but both Borowski and Papelbon were good, closing the game out with 5 innings of scoreless ball, and making Borowski a winner in his WBL debut. MEM 12 (Borowski 1-0; Papelbon 2 Sv) @ HOM 11 (Hudson 1-3) HRs: MEM: Pagliaroni (1); R. Smith (2) Box Score

TWIWBL 7.1: Series VI Notes - Bill James Division
{With the day off on April 25th, it was a time of roster moves and lineup and pitching adjustments. As such, there are a few more notes for each team than usual.}
#Detroit Wolverines Bob Bailey had four hits including a HR and Hank Greenberg added a grand slam, powering the Wolverines over the New York Gothams. To clear room for Hal Newhouser's return from a rehab stint in AAA, Long Tom Hughes was demoted. Justin Verlander was moved into the starting rotation as well, despite some recent struggles. Ty Cobb's 397/453/655 line is demanding more playing time, despite a crowded Detroit lineup. #Los Angeles Angels RP Larry Anderson, highly effective in 6 appearances, will miss a couple months with a sprained ankle. Armando Benitez was recalled from AAA to take his roster spot. Doug Radar had two HRs including a grand slam to lead Los Angeles to a 10-inning 11-6 win over Ottawa. Radar drove in 7 in the game on 3 hits. The Angels left a dozen runners on base in the final game of their series with Ottawa, losing 5-1 despite 12 hits, 11 of which were singles. The C platoon of Brian Downing and Jim Stephens is really not working out, but options aren't terribly available. OF Rusty Staub's 151/252/237 start did earn him a trip to AAA Las Vegas with 3B Tim Wallach joining the Angels. #Memphis Red Sox The Red Sox turned five double-plays in the final game of their series with Homestead, en route to a 6-2 victory. 2B Dustin Pedroia was part of each one, 3B Wade Boggs had 4 hits, and Ted Williams and Bob Brenly both went deep in support of Dean Chance, who moved to 4-1 on the year. Tim Wakefield's consistent bullpen performances have warranted his move into Memphis' starting rotation. OF Freddie Lynn and C Billy Bryan are destroying AAA pitching, but there is no room for them in Memphis as of yet. #New York Gothams Both C Buster Posey's 14-game and OF Willie Mays' 12-game hitting streaks came to an end in the same contest, but--perhaps surprisingly given that--it was a dramatic victory for the Gothams, 12-8 over Detroit in 10 innings. New York scored 4 runs in the top of the 9th to tie it and 4 more in the 10th to win. Johnny Callison had 3 hits, scored 4 times, and drove in 5 only to be outdone by Pinky Higgins who had 6 RBIs on his 3 hits. RP Marcel Lachemann was sent to AAA to clear room for Carson Smith's return from a rehab assignment. SS Art Fletcher was released--he refused to go to AAA, despite hitting 224/250/318--setting up a platoon between Eugenio Suarez and the newly-recalled Brandon Crawford. #Wandering House of David When Jerry Mumphrey was sent up to pinch-hit for Sammy Sosa with the bases loaded, the House of David were hoping for a hit to get them back in the ballgame. Instead, Mumphrey wrapped Cory Gearrin's pitch around the right field foul pole for a grand slam, and a 6-4 lead in the bottom of the 9th against Cleveland. The lead held, and the House of David emerged victorious. IF Frank Grant and C Gabby Hartnett are both struggling, but the House of David wants to wait before making any moves. 3B Jung Ho Kang was promoted to take the place of the recently injured George Gore.

TWIWBL 7.2: Series VI Notes - Cum Posey Division
{With the day off on April 25th, it was a time of roster moves and lineup and pitching adjustments. As such, there are a few more notes for each team than usual.}
#Baltimore Black Sox P Lindy McDaniel, massively ineffective over 7 appearances, was sent down to AAA with Mike Mussina coming back the other way. Chick Stahl is tearing up AAA, and if Paul Blair--currently slashing 205/287/337--continues to struggle, he may get a call-up in the next few weeks. #Chicago American Giants P Lee Meadows was waived and Joe Lake was sent down to AAA Milwaukee, with Sonny Dixon and Frank Smith joining Chicago. Herb Pennock will join the rotation, replacing Lake. #Houston Colt 45's The final slot in the Colt 45's rotation remains a mystery, with the team hoping someone from Stubby Overmire, Leon Day, and Dock Ellis steps forward. Larry Hisle's continued struggles (194/275/222) sent him down to AAA San Antonio. 37 year-old Ken Caminiti was waived to make room for DJ LeMahieu's promotion to Houston. Paul Goldschmidt's 176/300/265 line sees him likely getting much less playing time in the near future. #Kansas City Monarchs After a heart-breaking loss to the Black Yankees, the Monarchs had to do some roster juggling, both to help with bullpen fatigue and to bring in some help for Ozzie Smith at SS. Bob Gibson was sent back to AAA and Bill Doak was waived to free up roster space for RP Adam Russell and SS Jack Rowe. But the Monarchs fought back, defeating the Black Yankees, first 8-3 and then on a walk-off 5-4 victory powered by Boog Powell's 2 HRs and Stan Musial's 4 hits in 4 at-bats. The Monarchs ended up splitting the four game set with the Black Yankees--no mean feat. 1B Andre Thornton's slow start (139/333/250) earned him a trip to AAA St. Louis with 2B Robinson Cano, who was tearing up the league at 423/461/634 coming up to Kansas City. The roster still needed a RH OF, so Russell was sent back down after only a few days with the big league team in favor of Ducky Medwick. #Ottawa Mounties Randy Johnson may have done just enough--barely--to stay in the big leagues with a decent 5 inning performance against Los Angeles. After the game, RP Greg Holland hopped back on the AAA express, with the Mounties in desperate need for depth at 2B. They recalled George Cutshaw to help there (Cutshaw would have a nice debut, going 1-for-3 with a grand slam HR). Freddy Parent delivered a 2-0ut, 2-run single that scored Carlos Delgado and Terry Puhl, giving Ottawa a walk-off victory against Los Angeles' closer Joe Nathan, who fanned the first two batters before collapsing and giving up a three run lead. Recently recalled Jim Clancy was called into duty as an emergency starter, and the jury is still out. On the one hand, 5 innings, only 1 run, and the victory in a 5-1 win over Los Angeles is great; on the other hand, the traffic on the basepaths was nonstop, with Clancy giving up 10 hits and 2 walks in the 5 innings. Gary Lavelle pitched 2.2 scoreless innings for his second hold, and Tom Henke finished it out for his 7th save. The Mounties pitching staff is a mystery. They are committed to Johnson, despite the 25 year-old's 7.27 ERA, as well as to 19 year-old Ken Griffey, Jr, who is only slashing 205/253/217 to date. Gary Peters has been very ineffective, and will spend some time at AAA trying to work out his kinks, joining John Olerud in Montreal with veteran 1B/OF Roy Sievers and P Jamie Moyer heading to the big time (Terry Mulholland was waived to make room for Moyer). The fifth rotation slot is still unsettled, with Moyer, Clancy, and Monk Dubiel all in play.

TWIWBL 7.3: Series VI Notes - Effa Manley Division
{With the day off on April 25th, it was a time of roster moves and lineup and pitching adjustments. As such, there are a few more notes for each team than usual.}
#Cleveland Spiders A back injury has landed Napoleon Lajoie on the disable list, with the 22-year old expected to miss about two weeks. OF Kenny Lofton was recalled from AAA. OF Johnny Bates tied the WBL record with 5 hits, going 5-for-6 with 3 runs scored as the Spiders blew out the Wandering House of David 11-2 behind a strong performance from SP Bill Steen. Despite making his big league debut with 4.2 scoreless innings, Wilbur Cooper was sent back to AAA when Mel Harder was activated from the DL. The above really dictated the roster moves for the Spiders, but the lineup has seen some real changes. Look for Lofton, Rowland Office, and Sammy Strang to see significantly more playing time as the next set of games unfold. #Homestead Grays Ps Frank Linzy and Daniel Hudson have been absolutely hammered, and both will move to AAA, with Carlos Zambrano staying in the big leagues, but being moved out of the starting rotation, to be replaced by Hal Carlson. Despite an 0-4 record and an ERA over 8, Corey Kluber stays in the rotation for now. Jim Hegan went 0-for-11 in his big league debut, making the choice of what to do when Peaches Graham returned from the DL pretty easy: Hegan heads back to AAA Louisville. Pedro Feliz' 130/141/195 nightmare is over, as the 3B was demoted with Chris Sabo being added to the big league roster. Sabo has pressure behind him, especially at AA, where both Andy Van Slyke and Freddie Lindstrom are performing very well at the hot corner. #Indianapolis ABC's Bronson Arroyo's refusal to accept a AAA assignment places him in a precarious position if his performances don't improve, but for now he remains in the bullpen. Both Doc White and Tony Mullane are pitching well for Cincinnati, but remain at AAA for now. The roster is challenging right now: when Joe Morgan returns (which is a subject of great mystery right now), Lonny Frey will head to AAA, but he's needed right now. Pete Rose's slow start makes him expendable, and he'll try to get back on track in the minors, freeing up a roster spot for RP Rob Murphy's return from the DL tomorrow. #New York Black Yankees Babe Ruth was on base 4 times and still saw his 23-game hitting streak end: 4 walks and a strikeout will do that. Still, streak sets the WBL standard on the young season. New York has the luxury of carrying Willie Randolph, despite his 186/311/256 start, but look for Craig Counsell to see a bit more time at 2B. #Philadelphia Stars While the results of Jack Meyer's injury may change this, right now the Stars' staff looks solid, although there is still some uncertainty as to who the final rotation member might be (John Montgomery Ward and Jaret Wright are the current candidates, with Jack Easton pitching well at AAA despite an 0-4 record there). IF Al Smith (132/226/226) is headed to AAA, and Gene DeMontreville (135/135/162) should be joining him, but the lack of adequate middle infield depth keeps him with the Stars for the time being. Jose Ramirez will take Smith's place on the big league roster.

TWIWBL: Series VI Notes - Marvin Miller Division
{With the day off on April 25th, it was a time of roster moves and lineup and pitching adjustments. As such, there are a few more notes for each team than usual.}
#Birmingham Black Barons Omar Infante's first HR of the season was dramatic: a walk-off drive to LF off Indianapolis' Rob Dibble that gave the Black Barons a 5-4 victory in 11 innings. Birmingham totally overhauled its pitching staff, sending John Clarkson, Warren Spahn, and Jim Whitney to AAA Atlanta and bringing Larry Benton, Tim Hudson, and Vic Willis back the other way. Ken Griffery, Sr. was waived to make room for Benton on the 40-man roster. Sam Streeter and Dick Rudolph have been named to the starting rotation, joining Alejandro Pena and Scott Baker, leaving one spot still up for grabs. The Black Barons would love to send Dale Murphy (059/179/059) down, but the only C doing anything in their farm system is Earl Battey at AA. Murphy stays in the WBL for now, but Battey has been promoted to AAA, and is likely to come up if he shows much of anything there. Ginger Beaumont was demoted, with Bob Nieman coming up to the big leagues. 2B Tommy Herr and OF Curtis Granderson have moved into the starting lineup. #Brooklyn Royal Giants Dave Von Ohlen has been a bright spot in the Royal Giants' bullpen, with 2 holds and an ERA of 2.02. He has a tight back now, and given the general bullpen pressure, Brooklyn will put him on the DL, even though he's likely to be ready to go in under ten days. 20 year old Sandy Koufax was recalled from AAA in the meantime. Don Drysedale may be the best pitcher in the league right now: he moved to 4-0 on the year with a complete game victory over Miami, allowing only 1 run in his 9 innings, maintaining his 1.00 ERA on the season. Dick Redding will lose his spot in the rotation to Frank Knauss. OF Hi Myers and Jermaine Dye are tearing up AAA for Queens, but there's really no room in the Brooklyn OF at this time. #Miami Cuban Giants Camilo Pascual delivered one of the better performances of the year with a 6-hit shutout of Brooklyn, improving his record to 3-1. Pascual struck out 9 while walking 3. Miami's bullpen has suffered, but it's not clear who at AAA can help. Ryota Igarashi was demoted, with Jose Mendez recalled. Gary Sheffield is tearing up AAA, but the Cuban Giants are going to give struggling Jim Thome (149/270/257) a little more time before pulling the plug. #Portland Sea Dogs OF Jeff Burroughs (178/245/211) will head to AAA with 19 year-old P Joseito Munoz coming up to the big leagues to bolster the back end of the bullpen. #San Francisco Sea Lions Just recalled from AAA, Diego Segui was pressed into service, making his WBL debut and facing off against Portland's Jerry Koosman. Segui was terribly impressive, and the game was one of the better pitching duels on the young season, but despite allowing only 2 hits and 2 runs in 7 innings, Segui was tagged with the loss. Still, it was enough that he should stick around. The Sea Lions expect Dennis Eckersley to come off the DL tomorrow, so they cleared room for his arrival by sending Jim Shields down to AAA. Eddie Plank was moved into the rotation. Gene Oliver and Ron Hunt were both sent down to San Jose as well (John Beckwith at 182/258/291 and Eddie Joost at 162/287/309 are on the edge as well). Cy Perkins and Pedro Guerrero come back the other way (Bob Cerv has hit better than Guerrero, but there's no room for him in LF in San Francisco).

Previewing Series VII: Ottawa Mounties @ Cleveland Spiders
Ottawa heads to Cleveland for four games sitting in 4th place in the Cum Posey division with a 10-16 record. Cleveland is only a game better at 11-15 in the Effa Manley Division, making this a series of evenly-matched mediocrity. Cleveland has struggled to score runs, while the Mounties have just struggled.
The expected pitching matchups are (Ottawa hurler first) Roy Halladay (0-2, 5.34 ERA) v. Cy Young (1-2, 3.35 ERA); Randy Johnson (1-3, 7.27) v. Whit Wyatt (1-0, 1.74); Bob Brown (0-1, 4.91) v. Pat Malone (2-1, 4.55); and Old Hoss Radbourn (1-2, 5.40) v. Bill Steen (1-0, 2.30). Some of the storylines appear right there: at what point do the Mounties give up--for the time being--on the immense talent contained in Johnson's tall frame? Can Steen and, especially, Wyatt, continue to be essentially unhittable? (You could add Young to that, who has a 1.23 ERA over his last 14 innings.) If Ottawa can get that far, closer Tom Henke has been lights-out, allowing only 3 hits in 10 IP so far, leading to 7 saves. Relievers Ted Bowsfield and Gary Lavelle each have streaks of 4 scoreless appearances, so there has been some improvement there. Cleveland is led by Ron Blomberg (302/396/558) and John Ellis (255/321/608), and come into the series having just shuffled quite a bit of their lineup, instituting Sammy Strang into a platoon at 3B with Evan Longoria and Peanuts Lowery and Rowland Office into one in LF (Lowery was recalled when Office went down with an injury, and has hit well enough to stay). The key for the Spiders is if either Larry Doby (163/278/286) or Louis Santop (222/300/333) can get some offense going. Ottawa's offense has been effective at times, mostly when Larry Walker (345/406/690) has been healthy and Tim Raines (298/407/462; 12 SB) has been loose on the basepaths. Things fall off dramatically after those two, and the Mounties need better production throughout their lineup, but more from either Alex Rodriguez (207/250/322) or Ken Griffey, Jr. (205/253/217) would be especially welcome. Griffey has been especially miserable, managing only a .368 OPS over his last 10 games. Ottawa's Carlos Delgado has homered in 3 consecutive games.

Bombs Away!
Thanks to the efforts of our underpaid research department, we now have a place for a variety of statistics unavailable through OOTP's usual reports, including all of the 500+ ft. homeruns hit in the WBL. There have been 8 such blasts so far this season, with one batter doing it twice.
Not sure what is more surprising: Casey Stengel's presence or Eugenio Suarez'. Certainly Curt Blefary being on there twice is a bit of an eye-opener. 525 ft. Albert Pujols (KCM) 515 ft. Carlos Correa (HOU) 514 ft. Casey Stengel (HOU) 504 ft. Curt Blefary (BAL); Eugenio Suarez (NYG) 502 ft. Wally Moon (SFS) 501 ft. Curt Blefary (BAL)

Series VII Featured Matchup: Ottawa Mounties @ Cleveland Spiders
Series preview here.
April 26: Game 1 - Roy Halladay v Cy Young A topsy-turvy game featuring two hurlers struggling to live up to their high expectations. Things started rough for Cy Young, as he allowed 2 runs with 2 outs in the top of the first on consecutive doubles by Larry Walker and Phil Bradley, and an RBI single by Emil Gross. Cleveland's Rowland Office--just back from a stint on the DL--tied it up in the bottom of the 2nd with a 2-run HR off Halladay, and the Spiders took the lead an inning later on an RBI triple from Louis Santop, who scored on a groundout by John Ellis giving Cleveland a 4-2 edge. But Young was far from his best, giving up a double to Gross and a single to Freddy Parent to start the 4th inning. Gross would score when Santop's throw to 2B on Parent's steal attempt sailed into the OF. In the top of the 5th, Anthony Rendon led off against Young with a double, but was thrown out trying to stretch it to third. That seemed to settle Young down for a few innings, and the game remained 4-3 in favor of Cleveland until the bottom of the 6th, when Halladay surrendered another HR to Office, this one a 3-run shot to extend the Spiders' advantage to 7-3. Young would give up a 2-run HR to Walker in the top of the 7th, making it 7-5, and would finally be chased from the contest after walking Gross with 1 out in the 8th. Chuck Porter relieved Young, and promptly walked Parent and gave up a 2-run triple to Terry Puhl, tying the game at 7. Cleveland would respond in the bottom of the 8th when, with 2 outs, Chuck Knoblauch singled and stole second. Larry Doby, mired in a horrible slump, delivered a pinch-hit single to score Knoblauch, and Terry Adams got the final 3 outs, preserving the win for the Spiders. The Spiders were led by Office, who ended the game 3-for-4 with 5 RBI's and Santop, who raised his BA to an even .300 with a 4-for-4 performance. For Ottawa, Walker, Gross, and Parent had 2 hits each. OTT 7 (M. Dubiel 1-2) @ CLE 8 (C. Porter 2-2, 2 BS; T. Adams 5 Sv) HRs: OTT - L. Walker (4); CLE - R. Office 2 (2) Box Score April 27: Game Two - Rained Out Game two of the series was rained out, rescheduled as part of a doubleheader on April 28th. April 28: Game Two - Old Hoss Radbourn @ Whit Wyatt Whit Wyatt rolled into the early game of the doubleheader with an ERA under 2 and looking like a contender for the Brock Rutherford Award. Then Ottawa sent 8 batters to the plate, scoring 3 runs with RBIs from Carlos Delgado, Freddy Parent, and Gary Carter. John Ellis would get one back for Cleveland, doubling home Johnny Bates in the bottom of the first, but Ottawa's Old Hoss Radbourn had his full repertoire working. Wyatt, in contrast, continued to struggle: an RBI single by Parent added a run in the top of the 2nd and Tim Raines added a 2-run HR in the top of the 3rd, pushing the lead to 6-1. Radbourn couldn't solve Ellis, who lashed a 2-run HR in the bottom of the 3rd, halving Ottawa's lead to 6-3, and, in the bottom of the 5th, a sacrifice fly from Ron Blomberg made it a 2 run game, 6-4. Larry Walker had to leave the game after Blomberg's sac fly--if he is forced back to the DL, that's a major hit to the Mounties. Radbourn hit his stride, and Wyatt's replacement, Stan Coveleski, matched him frame for frame--a great job, given how wrecked the Spiders' bullpen could have been with another game to play on the day. But Ottawa jumped on Chad Qualls, who replaced Coveleski in the top of the 9th, for 2 more runs on an Anthony Rendon double and a sacrifice fly from Delgado. So we went to the bottom of the 9th with Ottawa holding what looked like a comfortable 4 run lead, 8-4. An error by Delgado let pinch-hitter Peanuts Lowrey reach first base to start the inning, and after a groundout by Chuck Knoblauch, Jake Stahl tripled to right field, scoring Lowery. That brought in Ottawa's closer, Tom Henke, who had been perfect on the season. He gave up a deep flyball to Louis Santop, scoring Stahl, and then a homerun to Kenny Lofton for his first earned run of the year. This was Lofton's first WBL start, making it even more surprising. Henke retired Bates to end the game, and the Mounties took the first game of the doubleheader, 8-7. For Ottawa, Raines stole 3 bases and scored 4 runs, going 3-for-4 on the day, and Parent added 3 hits. The Spiders were led by Blomberg's 3 hits and Ellis' 3 RBIs. OTT 8 (Radbourn 2-2; Henke 8 Sv) @ CLE 7 (Wyatt 1-1) HRs: OTT - Raines (4); CLE - Ellis (6), Lofton (1) Box Score April 28: Game Three - Bob Brown @ Pat Malone It's really hard to sweep a doubleheader ... but that's what Ottawa's Bob Brown would attempt as he took the mound to face Cleveland's Pat Malone. Brown suffered from control issues, and the Spiders opened the scoring in the bottom of the 2nd, when a single by Louis Santop was followed by walks to Rowland Office and Jake Stahl to load the bases. Struggling Larry Doby followed with a double-play ball that Ottawa SS Alex Rodriguez booted, allowing a run to score. Chuck Knoblauch added a sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead for the Spiders. They would add another run in the 3rd on consecutive groundouts following a double by Ron Blomberg, with Office's out scoring the run. Three 2-out singles in the top of the 4th put the Mounties on the board, with Emil Gross driving in Rodriguez and, an inning later, Tim Raines would hit a solo homerun to close the lead to 3-2. Recently recalled P Jamie Moyer took over from Brown in the 6th, and was greeted by a double by Knoblauch. Moyer then plunked Sammy Strang, and Blomberg plated both of them with a single, extending the lead to 5-2. Moyer survived the inning, but was replaced by Monk Dubiel who closed out the game strong for the Mounties. It was never a comfortable lead, as Ottawa had opportunities, but Mel Harder and Terry Adams were solid in relief of Malone. The game ended when Kenny Lofton--he of the walkoff HR in the first game and inserted as a defensive substitute in this one--made a diving catch in right-center field to end the game. Phil Bradley and Ken Griffey, Jr (who may be emerging from his season-long slump) had two hits for Ottawa; Blomberg had 3 hits and 2 RBIs for Cleveland. OTT 2 (Brown 0-2) @ CLE 5 (Malone 3-1; Harder 1 H; Adams 6 Sv) HRs: OTT - Raines (5) Box Score April 29: Game Four - Randy Johnson @ Bill Steen Bill Steen has exceeded expectations so far, coming into the game with a 1-0 record and a 2.30 ERA. Ottawa will try to bring him back to Earth much as they did Whit Wyatt, and will hope that the erratic Randy Johnson (1-3, 7.27) can deliver a solid performance. The Big Unit has either been quite good or horrid, with his worst starts hinging on an inability to locate his fastball. This was not one of his good starts. But Steen wasn't great, either giving up 11 hits in 5.2 IP. Somehow, though, the 12 baserunners (Steen walked one) only added up to 2 earned runs (3, total). Johnson, on the other hand, also gave up 11 hits, but in only 4.2 IP and walked 3, with 9 runs scoring against him. The key hits were a 2-run double from Sammy Strang and a 3-run HR from Chuck Knoblauch that chased Johnson from the game. Cleveland was led by Knoblauch, who went 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs and 3 runs scored from the leadoff spot and Ron Blomberg, who delivered another 3-hit game. Perhaps as importantly, Evan Longoria showed signs of emerging from his doldrums with a 3-for-5 day. For Ottawa, Ken Griffey, Jr. isn't hot yet, but he's got his average all the way up to .211 with a homerun in 4 at-bats. Phil Bradley added 4 hits and Anthony Rendon 3, but the Mounties left a whopping 13 batters on base. Jim Clancy was OK in relief of Johnson, allowing 1 run in 2 innings, and Gary Lavelle closed the game out with 1.1 IP of scoreless relief. For Cleveland, Cory Gearrin and Chuck Porter combined for 3.1 IP of 1-run ball behind Steen. OTT 3 (Johnson 1-4) @ CLE 10 (Steen 2-0) HRs: OTT - Griffey, Jr. (4); CLE - Knoblauch (2) Box Score Series Notes Cleveland got good performances from Louis Santop, whowas 7-for-12 with 4 RBIs and Jake Stahl, who was 6-for-12 with 4 extra-base hits. But the Spiders were led by Ron Blomberg, who had 10 hits in 15 at-bats with 6 RBIs. For Ottawa, Tim Raines was 5-for-17 with 2 HRs and 4 SBs, Freddy Parent was 5-for-9, and Phil Bradley was 7-for-13 in the series.

Series VII Featured Game: Homestead Grays @ Los Angeles Angels, Game 3
Buckle up, y'all.
This game saw 35 runs, 42 hits, an injury, a WBL debut, and each team spending at least 2 innings with a 90% likelihood of winning. We join the game in the bottomof the 2nd, when Homestead's Francisco Liriano was injured and unable to take the mound after a scoreless first. He was relieved by Cliff Lee, who promptly gave up 3 homeruns, with Bobby Grich and George Wright going deep back-to-back and Jim Stephens adding a 2 run shot. That gave the Angels a 4-0 lead. Homestead would tie the game in the top of the 4th against Pud Galvin, scoring 4 times with 2 outs, 2 runs coming home on a double by Tom Brown, 2 more on a 2-run HR from Honus Wagner. Stephens hit his second of the game in the bottom of the frame, a 3-run shot that chased Lee from the mound, to be replaced by Hal Carlson, who loaded the bases before giving up a run-scoring single to Doug Radar, making the score 8-4 in favor of Los Angeles. Again, though, the Grays would strike back with 2 outs with a double from Davey Johnson scoring Rick Reichardt followed by a 2-run double by Arky Vaughan. That closed Los Angeles' lead to 8-7. The Angels extended it to 9-7 on a solo homerun from Don Buford in the bottom of the 6th. Then things got exciting. Aaron Heilman had pitched a scoreless 6th, but he would only last 2 batters in the 7th, giving up hits to Mike Epstein and Johnson. Jonny Venters would relieve him, and walk Vaughn to load the bases, and then hit Brown to force in a run. Los Angeles would turn to Jeurys Familia, who gave up a 2-run single to Wagner before registering the first 2 outs of the inning. But the Grays again struck with 2 outs, with Willie Stargell doubling in Brown and Josh Gibson walking to load the bases. Los Angeles would again turn to its bullpen, bringing in Chuck Finley, who promptly walked Roberto Clemente to force in a run and gave up a 2-run single to Johnson. By the time the inning ended, the Grays had scored 7 runs, taking the lead 14-9. RBI doubles from Stephens and Kal Daniels would score 3 runs, so after 7 full innings, the score was 14-12. Reichardt would add a 2-run HR in the top of the 8th. 16-12. The Angels would rough up Kent Tekulve in the bottom of the frame, with a Mark Ellis double scoring 1 and a single by Stephens scoring 2 more. That made it a 1-run game, with Homestead ahead, 16-15. After Stephens hit, Homestead turned to Stan Bahnsen, just called up from AAA. Bahnsen got out of the inning with no further damage. The top of the 9th would see Homestead score another run with 2 outs, this one coming on a single from Chris Sabo, sending us to the end of the game with the Grays ahead by 2, 17-15. The Grays closer, Josh Lindblom, took the mound and got 2 outs quickly, sandwiched around a single from Mike Trout. But Grich took Lindblom deep to tie the game, and then 3 consecutive hits ended it: a single by Wright, a double from Ellis, and a game-winning, walk-off RBI by, who else, Stephens. Lots of records were touched in the game, led by Stephens 2 HRs and 9 RBIs. The Los Angeles catcher went 5-for-6 and scored 4 times. Ellis also went 5-for-6, and Grich had 3 RBIs. Ellis and Wright each scored 4 runs. For the Grays, Johnson had 4 hits and 3 RBIs, Wagner had 4 RBIs, and Brown 3. The real story, of course, was the implosion of both pitching staffs. Only Liriano, Bahnsen, and Joe Nathan held the opposing team's scoreless, and they only combined for 2 innings. Lee gave up 7 runs in 2 innings, Galvin 7 runs in 5, and Carlson 5 runs in 3.1. HOM 17 (Lindblom 0-1, 1 BS; Tekulve 1H; Bahnsen 1H)@ LAA 18 (Nathan 2-1; Heilman 1H; Familia 2 Bs) HRs: HOM - Reichardt (2), Wagner (1); LAA - Grich 2 (3), Stephens 2 (2), Wright (6), Buford (2) Box Score

TWIWBL 8.0: Series VII Notes
April 30th
Perhaps shockingly, given the nature of the featured game of Series VII, the real theme of the 40 games was quality pitching.
The other big news of the series was the Portland Sea Dogs' statement series against the New York Black Yankees. Portland took 3 out of 4 from New York, and now has the 2nd best record in the league. Also, Baltimore's Curt Blefary took over the league HR lead from New York's Babe Ruth with 12. Boldface indicates league leading mark. Streaks The House of David's Ernie Banks' hitting streak ended at 20 games, leaving Ty Cobb's 14 game streak as the longest active. Banks has reached base in 14 straight contests. Cleveland's Ron Blomberg has scored a run in 8 straight games and has an extra-base hit in 6. Baltimore's Sean Marshall hasn't allowed a hit in 6.1 innings. TWIWBL 8.1: Series VII Notes – Bill James Division
#Detroit Wolverines
Hal Newhouser made his second appearance of the year (his first only lasted 1.2 IP before an elbow injury sent him to the DL). While a little wild (5 walks), he pitched 6.2 innings of 2-hit, shutout ball. Gene Conley and Kevin Hart finished off the 3-hit shutout in the 10-0 victory over Baltimore. Tony Phillips suffered a concussion during the game, and was put on the 10 Day IL afterwards. 2B Robby Thompson, who has been tearing up AAA since being sent down, was recalled. Whitey Wilshire joined the 4-game winner club with 6.1 scoreless innings against Baltimore. The game was a bit of a laugher, with Geoff Jenkins' 4 hits leading the Wolverines to an 8-1 victory. #Los Angeles Angels Brett Anderson tossed a brilliant 3-hit shutout, going the distance for an 8-0 victory over Homestead. Anderson improved to 2-3 on the year, with support from one expected source (Doug Radar going 3-for-4) and one unexpected (Derrek Lee driving in 3 runs). Elmer Valo delivered an extra innings, walk-off victory in the final game of the series against the Grays. Valo singled in Mike Trout, who had walked to lead off the inning, and then gone to 3rd an a single by Bobby Grich. The hit gave the Angels a series sweep, with the win going to Jonny Venters, who pitched 1.2 scoreless innings in relief of a highly effective Harry Howell. #Memphis Red Sox Nixey Callahan was a hard-luck 0-4 on the season, despite better than average numbers. He took matter into his own hands, spinning 7.1 innings of 2-hit ball against Kansas City and earning his first victory of the season. Joe Beggs pitched a scoreless 9th for his 2nd save of the season, and the Red Sox won a well-pitched game, 3-1. #New York Gothams After the blowout 16-5 win over Philadelphia, the Gothams placed C John Kerins on the DL, calling up light-hitting Wes Westrum from AAA Hartford. Rain setup a doubleheader to close out the series with Philadelphia. In the first game, Joe Adcock tripled in 2 runs to tie the game at 3 with 2 outs in the bottom of the ninth against Philadelphia's closer, Bob Howry. Howry's next pitch scooted under Bill Dickey for a passed ball, and a 4-3 improbable comeback win for the Gothams. The Stars would win the second game, as Al Mays was shellacked for 6 runs in under 4 innings. The bright spot for the Gothams was a fantastic debut by recently recalled C Westrum, who went 3-for-4 with a grand slam. And I called him light-hitting above! #Wandering House of David Ernie Banks saw his 20-game hitting streak come to an end in a 9-5 victory over Indianapolis. The following day, Gabby Hartnett and Banks each hit pinch-hit HRs to lead the House of David to a come from behind victory over the ABC's. Frank Sullivan pitched a great game, allowing only 1 hit through 8 innings against Indianapolis. But the ABC's scored in the 9th, sending the game to extra innings, and a Johnny Bench HR consigned the House of David to an extra-inning defeat.

TWIWBL 8.2: Series VII Notes – Cum Posey Division
#Baltimore Black Sox
Curt Blefary hit 2 HRs, bringing his season total to a whopping 12, in an 8-4 loss to the Detroit Wolverines. #Chicago American Giants Cristobal Torriente was placed on the DL after severely twisting an ankle in the American Giants' 7-6 victory over San Francisco, a game won on a walk-off HR by Dick Allen. It could be a hard game for Chicago: Herb Pennock was injured as well, but may be able to make his next start and, more importantly, superstar 2B Eddie Collins left the game favoring his leg. His diagnosis is currently unknown. Avisail Garcia was promoted from AAA Milwaukee to take Torriente's place. Collins will miss about 2 weeks: Nellie Fox was called up from AAA, but the bulk of the 2B duties will fall to Damian Jackson. #Houston Colt 45's Casey Stengel--yes, Casey Stengel--hit the second longest HR in WBL history when he launched a 517ft mammoth shot off Miami's Bill Landrum, leading Houston to a 4-1 victory over the Cuban Giants. Only slightly less improbably than the above paragraph: Toad Ramsey, who has been thoroughly mediocre at best, delivered a 4-hit shutout against Miami in a 3-0 Houston victory. Ramsey walked 7, so it wasn't exactly a dominant performance; still, a 4-hitter is a 4-hitter. #Kansas City Monarchs How do you win a game when you give up 10 walks? By pounding out 23 hits and scoring 17 runs ... the Monarchs blew away Memphis 17-3, led by Rogers Hornsby's 2 HRs and 6 RBIs. Hornsby, Stan Musial, and Ozzie Smith scored 3 runs each, and recently recalled Robinson Cano added 4 hits. Jose Rijo pitched well enough for the win, improving to 2-1, and Trevor Rosenthal and Craig Kimbrel provided 4 innings of scoreless, one-hit relief. #Ottawa Mounties OF Larry Walker is heading back to the DL with a sprained wrist, leaving the Mounties without one of their only 2 higher end offensive performers so far (the other being Tim Raines). Rick Monday was recalled from AAA, increasing the pressure on Ken Griffey, Jr. to come out of his slump.

TWIWBL 8.3: Series VII Notes – Effa Manley Division
#Homestead Grays
Corey Kluber became the first 5 game loser in the WBL, but did so with easily his best performance of the year, giving up only 1 run until things fell apart a bit in the 7th. Still, Kluber's 7 innings and 3 earned runs was the kind of performance Homestead had hoped for from him, even if the 0-5 record is not. For more about the slugfest with Los Angeles, read here. The injury to Francisco Liriano will cost the hurler about a month, and Cliff Lee's horrific outing pushed the Grays to demote him to AAA. Bartolo Colon and Earl Hamilton were called up. #Indianapolis ABC's Four HRs, including 2 from Johnny Bench, weren't enough to hold on to victory as the ABC's lost a 5-1 lead en route to an eventual 10-7 loss to the House of David. Bench was the hero in the final game of the series, belting a 2-run HR in the bottom of the 11th for a come from behind victory. #Philadelphia Stars Jack Meyer will be out over a year, facing Tommy John surgery. Jack Easton was recalled from AAA to take his place on the roster. The Stars salvaged a doubleheader split with the New York Gothams behind a strong performance from their bullpen and 3 RBIs from CF Willie Davis. The win went to Steve Carlton (3-3), who labored through 6 innings before turning the ball over to Rheal Cormier, Ron Reed, and Pedro Feliciano who combined to deliver 3 scoreless innings with Feliciano getting the save. Riggs Stephenson, injured since Spring Training, will head to AAA on a rehab assignment.

Coming along nicely here Makonnen, loving it!
I understand the concept of your Seed Players (which actually inspired the Legacy Players in my Bucs save, thank you!), but is there somewhere on your website that explains what's to happen with the Franchise Rights and Future Rights players in a bit more detail?

Parts of it will evolve, but the notion is that in the offseason, the rookie draft class is reviewed and franchise players are automatically moved to the "correct" franchise's AA team. Additionally, other seed players may be added after the rookie draft (probably a reverse order of finish/probability thing, so the worst team in the league has a, whatever, 80% chance of getting an additional top "rookie," and it decreases from there). Those are just notions right now--it will evolve a bit. On the first of each game month, I'll make posts about the AAA and AA leagues, BUT there is an entire 3-tier independent league with promotion/demotion that I don't know what to do with yet (their season hasn't started, but the goal is to writeup an overview of them on the 17th of each game month, starting in May). My perfect world would have the AI proposing trades between the independent league teams and the WBL teams. But I don't know that I can make that happen, so the independent leagues, for all their popcorn fun, may be disbanded at some point. Overall, the goal is for the franchises to be "recognizable," that is, the New York Gothams should always have enough Giants players that someone says, "hey, that looks a bit like the Giants." I'll post more thoughts about this as it becomes clearer, but I'm absolutely open to ideas! My suspicion is this is a problem to be solved in early 2022, so ...

TWIWBL 8.4: Series VII Notes – Marvin Miller Division
#Birmingham Black Barons
OF Billy Southworth hit 2 HRs, but it wasn't enough as Brooklyn beat the Black Barons, 7-4. Birmingham OF Curtis Granderson had 3 assists, throwing out both Davey Lopes and Raul Mondesi at home in the bottom of the 1st inning, and then nailing Beals Becker trying to score in the bottom of the 5th. #Brooklyn Royal Giants OF Beals Becker hit 2 HRs, leading the Royal Giants past Birmingham, 7-4. In the series finale, it was Duke Snider's turn, as he hit 2 HRs in a game Brooklyn won 5-2. #Miami Cuban Giants Camilo Pascual's scoreless streak ended at 19 innings, but leaving with a 6-1 lead over Houston, he looked destined for his 4th win of the year. But a disastrous debut from Jose Mendez let the Colt 45's tie the game in the 9th. Miami did come away with the win on a walk-off RBI single from Alejandro Oms in the bottom of the 10th, with Aroldis Chapman moving to 2-0 on the year. #Portland Sea Dogs The four game series against the Black Yankees ended in the most improbable of fashion. Bert Blyleven delivered a quality start, but left the game trailing 3-2, a score that maintained until the bottom of the 9th. Goose Gossage was pitching for New York, and when Gil Hodges walked with 1 out, the Sea Dogs sent Gary Pettis to first as a pinch-runner. Up came Kiki Cuyler, struggling to get his batting average over .200. Cuyler delivered with a rope to right-center field, with Pettis scoring and Kiki taking 3rd on the throw. New York called in their closer, Sparky Lyle, to face the left-handed Harry Hooper ... who pulled off a successful squeeze but, with Cuyler sliding outside of Thurman Munson's desperate, lunging tag for the 4-3 Portland victory! The win gave Portland the series against the best team in baseball, 3 games to 1, and made them the second team in the league to reach 20 wins. #San Francisco Sea Lions Dennis Eckersley's return from the DL did not go well: two-thirds of an inning, 3 hits, 5 walks, and 6 runs allowed, setting the stage for a shellacking for the Sea Lions at the hands of the Chicago American Giants with a final score of 12-5. The only bright spot is the performance of newly-promoted OF Pedro Guerrero, who went 3-for-5 including his first big league HR.

I think I'm going to edit them into having a 10-year contract commensurate with the era they're playing in and hopefully that gets me what I want. Will keep you in the loop as to anything interesting I find, we can compare notes along the way.

I play every game manually for the WBL. Do you (or anyone) know of a combination of settings where teams (that is, the AI) can "propose" trades that I (as commish) can then approve? This is a big obstacle for me, as the work of going through each franchise to try to create "fair" trades is a bit daunting, but I need trading and economics to be an ongoing gear in dispersing talent.
