Well gee, sign old men and what do you expect?!?!?!?

In my game he did 27.2 WAR, 113 OPS+, 115 wRC+

Also #3 on team career home runs (1951 - 2001) with 269, behind Bonds 398 and Stargell 467.

The joyful vagaries of the Random Debut Gods.

Poor bloke, he'll always be the "other" Frank Thomas, regardless of success...

On several occasions I've had players who were only briefly Pirates. They won't be wearing a Pirate uniform on BR but its usually possible to find pics on the internet in the right uniform. Examples:

Bert Blyleven, Vic Davalillo, Aramis Ramirez

To clarify, in my current game of those three I've only had Ramirez.

Thank you, I really appreciate you saying that. Many hours of love poured into it, as with all my saves, and really enjoying how it is panning out. Hopefully the on-field action lives up to its promise. Can't wait to see guys like Dihigo and Torriente mixing it up with the guys they should have been allowed to play with and against in real life!

Credit again to the mods who make all these fantastic add-ons and just make it so immersive.

Game of the Week – Sunday, 16th April 1961

Good evening and thanks for tuning in to this Game of the Week telecast. A cool and blustery night here at Pike Street Grounds, challenging conditions indeed.

Tonight the Seattle Rainiers play host to divisional rivals Portland. The two teams played out a fantastic game last night, with the home team sneaking by 4-3 thanks to a walkoff RBI double by backstop Lance Parrish, and they do match up very evenly on paper so I’m expecting another tight one this evening.

Tim Keefe on the mound for the Rainiers while the Stags are going with Jim Whitney. Neither has exactly set the league on fire so far, something I’m sure they’ll be keen to change tonight. Seattle struggled early, but are riding a 4-game win streak including a sweep of New York that has got them back to .500 ball. The Stags are at 4-9 and certainly playing better of late after losing their first four of the season.

Before we get started, our field reporter Juliana Scott is down in the Rainiers dugout with manager, Lou Piniella. Juliana, over to you.

Juliana Scott: Thanks Nik. Appreciate your time, Lou. A slow start, but 4 wins on the trot now and your squad looks to be coming together nicely. What do you think has been the difference over the past few games?

Lou Piniella: Oh, no doubt, we’ve pitched better. We’ve only given up 10 runs in those four wins and when you do that you’ll usually come out on top of more ballgames than you'll lose.

JS: Just 43 runs scored in 12 games, lowest in the league--you can’t be too happy about that.

LP: No, that’s certainly an area we have to be better in. Trout and Gordon have been good, Ashburn as well, Lloyd is really looking promising. But a few of the other lads have been slow off the mark and our hitting in the clutch has been poor so far, which means we’ve left a lot of runs on the deck and lost a couple of games we should perhaps have won. But it’s a young group all new to this level, so we always expected some teething problems such as these across the board.

JS: Last night’s game was scoreless thru 8 and then you fell behind 2-0 in the 9th. How did you get the group to regather after that and get the win in dramatic fashion?

LP: We felt we’d been unlucky not to score a couple of times and, as I said, we just weren’t delivering at key moments. But we knew we were far from out of it and I was really proud of how the guys lifted to get us home in the end. Lance’s at-bat that resulted in the walkoff run was more along the lines of what we’re looking for. He hung tough, fouled a couple off, and then got his pitch and drove it.

JS: You’ve got Tim Keefe pitching for you tonight, tell us a bit more about him.

LP: I doubt Tim will win many strikeout titles, but he has excellent control and won’t give up too many homers. He’ thrown too many straight down the pipe in his starts so far, and in this league that will get you treated the way he was. So we’ve been working on him mixing his pitches up and staying ahead in the count so he can nibble a bit more and pressure the hitters into false swings. Hopefully that’ll show tonight. If he can get his changeup working the way we know it can he’ll be a different pitcher altogether.

JS: And what do you know about his opponent, Jim Whitney?

LP: Only that I hope he pitches tonight more like he did in his first game than his last one (laughs). From what we can tell he’s not too dissimilar a pitcher to Tim in a lot of ways. Not overpowering stuff, but will wear hitters down with good control and a decent array of pitches. We’ll be looking to attack him early in the count because if he gets ahead of you then he’s tough to beat.

JS: Just before I let you go, you mentioned this is a new, young group – what have you found to be the most challenging aspect of managing them so far?

LP: We know we have a good bunch of ballplayers, but we also know they are raw and will take time to come on as we expect, to gel as a unit. But really for mine, the toughest thing is getting them all enough game time while still using each player in the right situation so that we have the best chance of winning games. That will become easier as we all get to know one another better, but until then it’s something we’ll have to keep close tabs on.

JS: Great, Lou, thanks again for your time and all the best for tonight’s game and the season ahead.

LP: No problems Juliana, any time at all.

Thanks Juliana, and of course thanks to Lou. OK, after this quick word from our sponsors we’ll be back with the first pitch.

TOP 1ST
A messy start for the home side as Portland scores an unearned run after Gordon makes a two-out error and Mantle singles it in.
Portland 1, Seattle 0

BOTTOM 1ST
The Stags return the favour when, after Ashburn leads off with a double, an error by the 3B Molitor puts men at the corners with none out. Lloyd fails to bring in the run, hitting into a fielder’s choice, and then Magee ends the threat by taking a flyout from Trout and turning it into a double play at home. Lou Piniella won’t be impressed with that missed opportunity.

TOP 2ND
No dramas for Keefe in a 1-2-3 inning.

BOTTOM 2ND
Whitney retires them in order.

TOP 3RD
Nothing doing for the Stags.

BOTTOM 3RD
Parrish leads off with a hit and scores on a two-out double by Jim “The Toy Cannon” Wynn.
Portland 1, Seattle 1

TOP 4TH
A red-hot Roger Connor starts the inning off with a single, and another one by Mantle moves him to second. Keefe strikes out Campaneris for the first out of the inning, but then Connor swipes third to put him right under the pump. A popout by Molitor eases the pressure somewhat and he gets out of the jam when Parrish grounds out.

BOTTOM 4TH
Whitney with a three-up, three-down inning.

TOP 5TH
More struggles for Keefe. Rajah Hornsby leads off with a single and ends up at third when a caught stealing attempt by Parrish ends up in the outfield. This time, he can’t escape unhurt as Magee singles the runner in. Waner bunts him over to second and then Bell doubles to extend the visitors’ lead. A Mantle single leaves men at the corners with two outs, but Keefe ends the inning with a flyout.
Portland 3, Seattle 1

BOTTOM 5TH
Whitney is locked-in now and retires them in order.

TOP 6TH
An up-and-down inning for Keefe.

BOTTOM 6TH
Nothing doing for Seattle, who have been limited to just 3 hits so far.

TOP 7TH
A one-out double by Waner chases Keefe, who is replaced by Hawley. A groundout by Bell moves the runner to third and Connor lines out to Gordon to end the threat.

BOTTOM 7TH
Now it’s Portland forced to make a pitching change when Trout gets aboard with a leadoff double and Stags skipper Walter Alston decided to play it safe and go to the bullpen. Despite matching lefty against lefty by bringing in Plank to face Utley, the Seattle DH slaps a single to left, moving Trout to third with still no outs made. But the home team has to trade two outs for a run when Gordon grounds into a double play. Bregman walks and advances to second on a wild pitch, but Parrish can’t repeat his previous night’s heroics this time around, ending the inning with a harmless flyout to Waner in right field.
Portland 3, Seattle 2

TOP 8TH
Hawley retires them 1-2-3.

BOTTOM 8TH
The Rainiers mount a two-out rally with singles to Wynn and John Henry Lloyd, which brings Valenzuela into the game in relief of Plank. But Trout just misses the big blast when his deep flyball comes a foot or so shy of being a 3-run homer and instead brings the inning to a close.

TOP 9TH
Hawley gets into strife when he walks Hornsby and then gives up a double to Magee, putting both in scoring position with one out. Piniella’s gutsy call to pitch to Waner rather than give him a free pass pays off when he pops one up, and then Hawley fans Bell to end the inning.

BOTTOM 9TH
Valenzuela retires the first two men to bring Seattle down to their final out, but then walks Bregman on four pitches to open the door ever so slightly. Of course it has to be Parrish due up, doesn’t it? But Fernando slips a screwball by him for strike three and the Stags take a nailbiter.

Portland 3, Seattle 2 (final).

WP: Jim Whitney (1-1)
LP: Tim Keefe (1-2)
SV: Fernando Valenzuela (2)
POTG: Jim Whitney

Well we sure have been blessed with some fantastic contests so far in our Game of the Week coverage, and this was no exception. Seattle gave it their all, but the 18-odd thousand home fans go home disappointed. They didn’t do much wrong in this one, they just didn’t do enough right, and Portland took their chances and got the result.

Thanks for tuning in again, and we’ve got another beauty next week as the Boston Beacons duke it out with their North Division rival Connecticut Colonials at Community Stadium in Hartford.

Until then, good night.

RE post 54 great write up. Super.

I was in a league once where the commissioner would post stories like that. His took the format of a news article rather than a live interview. Anyway, when the story was about one of our teams, we'd write an amplifying or rebuttal story.

I had taken over a team where Casey Stengel was the manager and he wrote a story about Stengel's job being on the line. I wrote a rebuttal that Stengel said he wasn't worried about his job because he hadn't yet made the mistake of being 70.

My current GM (Anne Bonny) is the result of a ruling by that commissioner. The manager was just for show, a name for his articles, and I wanted Jose Gasper to manage the Treasure Island Pirates. He said no, had to be a real manager from the era being played.

So with the idea the Pirates should be run by a real pirate I have Anne Bonny now.

Hahahaha - is Edward Teach your Bench Coach?

Those interviews will be a regular GotW feature, either with managers or players. I was going to do a magazine feature but in the end my lack of skills in that department made it too time-consuming what with all of my various leagues on the go (there's another one in the works - I'm a glutton for punishment!)

Glad you're enjoying it bud, thanks for the feedback.

G

Yea, I liked the interview. Really nice.

(Teach isn't my bench coach. Just someone in the game.)
