This is where I like the fact that if you can get Barry Larkin and Tony Fernandez on your team in 1990 you do not trade one of them because you have two SS. You move one of them to 2B and you have a great defensive infield.
The same could not be said though if you had Sandberg and Whitaker. Moving a true 2B to play SS is not going to help you defensively. The same applies to CF vs LF and RF. If you can get two good CF on your team and move one of them to RF you are in business. It is actually quite difficult to get two good SS or two good CF on your team though due to scarcity at the positions. |

![]() I also think with this now being such a big part of the game, using spring training is a must. I have the straight historical I started and a random debut I started as my current games. The random debut league used spring training and I'm not seeing near as many unrated or red rated guys starting games. I think it's probably because the AI took care of a lot of the position changing during spring training. Can guys move from 2B to 3B? Wasn't Sandberg a 3B when he first came into the league or in the minor leagues? I think I can really grow to like this system, but for me to do so, I need to see the AI making good decisions. I need to see some guys fail in their attempt to learn a new position and the AI realize the failure. I also need to see the whole process toned down a bit, where it isn't just the AI making players play out of position willy nilly just because it can. My Santo, Banks, Rodgers example above is a perfect case of the AI just being silly and in doing something just because it can. In the meantime the Cubs pay the price. No need for this position learing feature to become another 2 way player feature. Took me a while to realize that we are seeing this type of stuff all the time now. Story goes to Sox and plays 2B. Baez has played 2B and SS. Correa was going to play 3B for the Mets. It's not going to be easy seeing Brooks Robinson moving to 1B or Ozzie Smith playing 2B, but in the grand scheme of things, this could be great for career sims. I could see this becoming a huge advantage for the human manager if the AI doesn't develop the ability to realize it's playing folks with really bad ratings. I can move Fernandez to 2B and monitor his progress. Can the AI? Moving Santo to 1B, Banks to SS and Rodgers to 3B leads me to believe at this time the AI doesn't have the ability to do so. Instead, it's got a shiny new toy and wants to show it to all the neighbor kids.

It won't help defensively but in my examples an average-ish defensive SS who brings a bat with him is a net gain.
