World Championship Series Game 1 Victory for Spalding and Boston
The Boston Red Stockings started the World Championship Series in style today, downing the visiting Philadelphia White Stockings at South End Grounds I by a score of 8-3 to stake an early 1-0 lead in the best-of-7 series. Red Stockings right-hander Al Spalding threw 9.0 innings of 8-hit ball.

The outcome was still in doubt with two out in the top of the fifth inning, but Spalding was able to pitch out of a jam. With runners on 1st and 2nd and Philadelphia trailing 4-3, Spalding retired Levi Meyerle, who grounded out.

The next game is set to be played tomorrow at South End Grounds I in Boston.

Boston Over Philadelphia in 11-2 Romp
The Boston Red Stockings got a strong performance from pitcher Jack Manning, who stymied the visiting Philadelphia White Stockings en route to a win, 11-2, in Game 2 of the World Championship Series today. The White Stockings could never get a bead on the right-handed Manning, who threw 9.0 innings of 4-hit ball. The Red Stockings now hold a 2-0 in the best-of-7 series.

Manning, who was born in Braintree, Massachusetts, threw 102 pitches over 9 innings, while allowing 2 runs.

Said losing manager Bob Addy: "Give the Red Stockings credit. They took advantage of our mistakes."

Game 3 is scheduled for Friday at Jefferson Street Grounds in Philadelphia.

Philadelphia Wins at Home to Narrow Series Deficit to 2-1
The Philadelphia White Stockings have closed some of the gap between themselves and the series-leading Boston Red Stockings, winning 10-5 at Jefferson Street Grounds today. White Stockings second baseman Levi Meyerle was 3-5 with a triple and a double, while scoring 3 runs and driving in 2. The win cuts the deficit facing the White Stockings to 2-1 in the best-of-7 World Championship Series.

Meyerle came through for Philadelphia with a 2-run triple in the bottom of the first. He hit a first pitch curveball to right-center field, staking his team to a 2-0 lead.

"We came out aggressive," said White Stockings manager Bob Addy. "We came out swinging the bats."

The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Jefferson Street Grounds in Philadelphia.

Series Lead Trimmed to 1 for Boston After 11-7 Setback
The Philadelphia White Stockings have closed some of the gap between themselves and the series-leading Boston Red Stockings, winning 11-7 at Jefferson Street Grounds today. White Stockings left-hander John McMullin was 4-5 with a double and 3 singles. He scored 3 runs. The win cuts the deficit facing the White Stockings to 3-2 in the best-of-7 World Championship Series.

Chick Fulmer contributed a productive at-bat in the bottom of the second. With runners on 1st and 3rd, he hit a 2-run single. It was one at-bat that helped Philadelphia get the win.

"We were able to get some things going offensively," said McMullin.

Game 6 is scheduled for Tuesday at South End Grounds I in Boston.

Boston Red Stockings Take World Championship Series
It was all about winning for the Boston Red Stockings -- and win they did.

There was nothing fancy in how they went about it, players said, they just prepared mentally and physically and then went out and played baseball.

"We did the little things right and we did the big things right," said starting pitcher Al Spalding, who was named series MVP. "Now we're the league champions."

Boston defeated the Philadelphia White Stockings by a score of 8-1 at South End Grounds I to take the series 4-2.

"Sometimes you get lucky and sometimes you make your own luck," said Boston manager Harry Wright. "We got lucky a few times, but mostly we did the right things by being prepared for each game and playing the game the way it's meant to be played."

If you wrap a code tag around your stats they will show up using a fixed-width font. I still have to pre-type my stuff in Visual Studio Code (notepad++ would also work) to get everything aligned but it’s OK. I’d love it if we could post HTML although i kind of understand why not…

Thanks.
I'll try it but i'm not sure where to get code tags. Is that the <> in the box above when you're posting?
To be honest i have no idea when it comes to HTML and stuff.
I rarely go outside of notepad or word.

You put this in front [ code ] and this after [ /code ] without the spaces. If you hit the reply button to one of my weekly updates you should see it in action (you don’t actually have to reply! Just click the button and look at how my post is laid out under the quote tag).

New Beginings

The National Association League faced turbulent times as seven out of its 13 teams went out of business. The league was more of a gathering of player clubs than a league of teams, with players coming and going as they pleased. Unreliable scheduling and teams not fulfilling their commitments were just a few of the issues the league faced. Financial instability plagued the league, and on December 17th, 1875, the remaining six teams left to establish the National League.
From the ashes of the National Association League of Baseball Players, a new league was born. William Hulbert had conceived the National League as a league of teams controlled by owners, rather than players. Hulbert secretly convinced some of the National Association's best players to sign with his Chicago White Stockings, and by the time Harry Wright learned of the deals, it was too late to save the National Association. The league added two teams in Louisville and Cincinnati, bringing the total to eight teams.
Chicago dominated the league, setting team records in batting average with a team total of .339 and earned run average with a team total of 1.76. Harry Wright's Red Stockings struggled, finishing 19 games behind and missing the postseason for the first time in team history.
On September 11th, Philadelphia informed the League office that it could not honor its remaining schedule due to financial difficulties, creating controversy. Hulbert was furious when Philadelphia came in second in team rankings based on winning percentage, but Bulkeley ruled that since Philadelphia had not folded and was technically still a team on hold, it was entitled to a postseason berth. Hulbert instructed his White Stockings to win the World Championship Series, resulting in a Chicago sweep. Not satisfied with the outcome or Bulkeley's decision, Hulbert replaced him as commissioner for 1877 and expelled Philadelphia and New York from the league for failing to complete their schedules.
Although the National League represented a new beginning for baseball, doubts about its survival were already starting to emerge, especially after losing two teams in major markets. People began to wonder if smaller teams like Cincinnati and St. Louis could survive if New York and Philadelphia could fail.

Chicago Tops Philadelphia Again, 7-6
Riding the 4-hit performance of shortstop John Peters, the Chicago White Stockings stopped the visiting Philadelphia Athletics, 7-6, in Game 2 of the World Championship Series today. Peters was 4-5 with 4 singles, while scoring 3 for the White Stockings, who now lead the best-of-7 series, 2 games to 0.

The game was at a stalemate until third baseman Cap Anson came to bat in the bottom of the eighth. Facing Philadelphia pitcher Lon Knight, he hit a full count fastball for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Chicago on top, 7-6.

"It was a solid team effort," said Peters after the game.

Game 3 is scheduled for Friday at Jefferson Street Grounds in Philadelphia.

You would think ootp would make posting stats as easy as printing stats.
Running a 19th century league is the easy part.
Like I said, I usually have to format everything in a text editor first. Posting stats on a message board is, frankly, the kind of thing that like 10 people would benefit from. Hate to say it as one of those 10 but I can’t imagine it’ll ever be a high priority.
