Group 10 Recap
Even though it was pretty easy to tell who won this one, here's the final tally-
1971 Orioles- 550 1999 Astros- 489 2004 Red Sox- 489 1939 Yankees- 479 2006 Yankees- 461 1986 Angels- 448 The final team in our Top 10 is the 1971 Baltimore Orioles! They move into the final round to make the Orioles the only franchise with two teams from the same era. The Dodgers also have 2, but they are spread out by 66 years. This Orioles team will obviously be another tough one, but it will be interesting how they compare with the 69 team that got in back in round 3. Remember they had to win in a playoff with the 2014 Dodgers. I won't go into much more here.....I'll do a Final Round Preview in the next post. Before I wrap up Round 3, here's my attempt at an All-Group 10 Team- C- Bill Dickey (39 Yankees)- He had some huge offensive years and was an easy choice here. 1B- Jeff Bagwell (99 Astros)- This was a close race with David Ortiz, but Papi split between 1st and DH, so I'm going with Bagwell. 2B- Joe Gordon (39 Yankees)- At the start, I thought Craig Biggio was going to cruise here, but Gordon picked it up and outplayed him. 3B- Red Rolfe (39 Yankees)- With all these 39 Yankees, you'd think they would have done better! Rolfe is a surprise name here, but his Silver Sluggers back it up. SS- Derek Jeter (06 Yankees)- Dick Schofield made a strong run at this spot early, but Jeter kept getting better and his 2006 season was fantastic. OF- This is a tough spot to narrow down to 3 in this group, but I'll go with Joe DiMaggio (39 Yankees), Manny Ramirez (04 Red Sox) and Carl Everett (99 Astros). DiMaggio takes home the Group MVP, but a few other guys made it close. I have to mention two other OFers here as honorable mention....Don Buford (71 Orioles) and George Selkirk (39 Yankees) who both had a number of great seasons. A really good OF group. DH- I could have put one of the OFers here, but there was a good group of DH players too! I'm going with Robinson Cano (06 Yankees) by a hair over Nomar. SP- This is a tough spot. Lots of guys put up good seasons here and there, but not many stood out consistently. With that in mind, though, I chose Marius Russo (39 Yankees) and Mike Cuellar (71 Orioles)....with Pedro Martinez as a close 3rd guy. RP- Another close position, but Billy Wagner (99 Astros) gets the nod here by just a bit. Next I'll preview each team in our Top 10 before the Final Round begins.

Top 10 Preview
We are nearing the end of this competition, with just one more round to go. The Top 10 Teams have been determined and there is a mix of teams many would expect, along with teams very few would expect. I am looking at it as each team kind of represents a group of years when a certain team was great.....the mid-late 80's Mets, the 20's and 30's Yankees, the Big Red Machine, etc. There is really only one team that doesn't fit into that way of thinking....I guess they represent the fact that in baseball, anything can happen! Here's a closer look at the teams fighting it out to be named The Greatest.
1943 St Louis Cardinals In Real Life They went 105-49-3, won the NL Pennant and lost the World Series to the Yankees in 5 games. From 1941-1946, the Cardinals won 95 or more games every year. They won 4 NL Pennants and 3 World Series in those years as well. This isn't a "dyansty" people talk about much, but they are a very good team with incredible pitching and an offense led by Stan Musial. How They Got Here After winning their 1943 season in Round 1, they were matched up with the 1951 Yankees in Round two. They won a very close match with them by a 163-161 margin. Then, they were pretty dominant in Group 1, amassing 561 wins, 21 ahead of the 2nd place 1909 Pirates. That win total puts them tied for the 3rd most in Round 3. Other Notes I'm not sure how this team will do. Their pitching seems to play well in all eras and drove them to the Round 3 victory. Their offense isn't the strongest. Musial is great, but his power hasn't developed yet, so they don't hit a lot of HR. However, their pitching doesn't give up many HR either. In Round 3 they allowed an amazingly small number of runs to score....to the point where the team could win 90-100 games while having the lowest scoring offense. Not sure if that will fly with the teams they will face, but it just might. 1953 Brooklyn Dodgers In Real Life They went 105-49-1, won the NL Pennant and lost the World Series to the Yankees, 4-2. They represent the Dodgers from 1949-1956. In those years, the Dodgers won 89 or more games every year and never finished below 2nd. They won 5 NL Pennants and 1 World Series. If not for the Yankees, they may have won 4 or 5 World Series during that stretch. How They Got Here They got through their own 1953 season and then got matched up against the 1965 Dodgers in round 2. They absolutely crushed that team, 204-120. They then won 524 games in Group 2 to get here. Other Notes This team has to be among the favorites to win the competition. It seems strange to have a team that didn't win the World Series in their season be the greatest ever, but that's why we aren't using the playoff system to determine the winners. This Dodgers team has it all...pitching and offense with multiple Hall of Famers on the roster. 1969 Baltimore Orioles In Real Life They went 109-53 in the regular season, swept the Twins in the ALCS 3-0 and then lost in the World Series to the Miracle Mets 4-1. They represent a 4-year stretch from 1968-1971 where the Orioles won 91 or more games, went to 3 World Series and won 1. It was not as long a period of dominance as our 1st two teams in the Top 10, but they were very good in those years....as evidenced by having a 2nd team from this time period also in the top 10. How They Got Here They went through the 1969 season to be matched up with the 1956 Reds. Their 196-128 margin of victory shows that was not a close match for them. However, they ran into some stiff competition in round 3, as they ended up tied with the 2014 Dodgers at 508 wins.....and with the 1992 Braves and 1907 Cubs close behind at 504. In a two season playoff against the Dodgers, they came through with a 169-155 margin, despite losing their home 1969 season 85-77. Other Notes Another team where I'm not sure what to expect. They blew through rounds 1 and 2 pretty easily, but ran into trouble in round 3....was it because of that being the toughest group or are they a weaker member of this Top 10? As with many of the teams that made it this far, pitching and defense are very strong.....any time you have Paul Blair, Brooks Robinson and Mark Belanger you are going to have a good defense. They also have strong hitting with Frank Robinson, Boog Powell and others. I'm not sure they are a favorite, but they might be close. 1976 Cincinnati Reds In Real Life They went 102-60 in the regular season and then swept both the Phillies in the NLCS and the Yankees in the World Series. They are part of the famous Big Red Machine that pretty much ran from 1972-1978. There was a year or two in there where they weren't as incredible as some others, but many agree that the Reds teams of this era were among the best ever. Led by Johnny Bench, Pete Rose, Tony Perez, etc., they had a tremendous offense. Their pitching didn't feature names that big, but it was always solid with a strong bullpen. There were 4 teams from this era in Round 3 and this was the only one to make it here. How They Got Here After a fairly easy 1st Round, they got matched up against the 1970 Pirates, which I thought might give them a tough time. A 191-133 win shows that wasn't the case. In Round 3, they never won less than 88 games and tied the 1943 Cardinals for the 3rd most wins at 561....winning by 60 games over the 2012 Braves. Other Notes I wasn't positive when this started, but this was the Reds team I thought would be here. I wouldn't have been surprised if they were the dynasty that had more than one representative in the Top 10, but if not, the 76 team was the one I'd put my money on. There will be a ton of great players in this final round, but I have to think Joe Morgan will be one of the best. George Foster flexed a lot of muscle in Round 3 as well, so offense won't be a problem for this team. Pitching seems to be solid, but solid might not cut it in this round. They are still one of my favorites to win this along with the 53 Dodgers so far. 2019 Los Angeles Dodgers In Real Life This Dodgers team went 106-56 in the regular season, but then got upset by the Nationals in the NLDS, 3-2. In general, the Dodgers have been dominating the NL West since about 2013 and continue to do so. because of the way playoffs have expanded, it's much harder to advance to the World Series than when some of the older teams were dominating, but this group of Dodgers teams have won 3 Pennants and 1 World Series. How They Got Here After a Round 1 victory over one of the larger groups of teams in that round, they matched up against the 1922 Giants. A convincing 182-142 victory sent the to Round 3. There were a few teams I thought might challenge this team in Round 3, but they blew through their group with 566 wins for the 2nd most in the round. They won by 46 over the 2017 Nationals. Other Notes I think I have too many favorites! These guys are another one! This team has tons of power and great pitching. Bellinger, Pederson and Muncy kill the ball and pitchers like Kershaw, Ryu and Buehler are terrific. They also have a number of guys like Alex Verdugo and Will Smith who had partial seasons that translate well and may factor in. The weakness for this team might be the bullpen and lack of on-base skills. I could see their offense faltering against strong pitching because too many of the HR are solo....think back to the 1961 Yankees in their Round 3 disaster. I guess they are more of a tier 2 favorite. 2011 Texas Rangers In Real Life They went 96-66 in the regular season to make it to.....where they lost to the Cardinals 4 games to 3. You don't really think of the Rangers as having a "dynasty", and they really don't, but this team represents a group of Rangers teams from 2010-2013 where they won 90+ games and 2 Pennants. Nowhere near as impressive as most of the other teams in the Top 10, but they are the example we talked about earlier where anything can happen. How They Got Here First round dominance saw them rack up the 2nd highest win total in that round. In the second, they were up against the 1941 Dodgers and won 179-145...not dominant, but very good. Finally, in the 3rd Round, they made it through a fairly close group with 508 wins, winning by 16 over the 1990 Pirates. Other Notes Who had this team on your Top 10 Team of All-Time lottery ticket? Not me! The fact is, they are here....and offense is a big reason why. Mike Napoli, Michael Young, Josh Hamilton, Adrian Beltre....the great seasons just keep coming. Other than CJ Wilson, the pitching doesn't seem great, but it's been plenty good enough so far. The bullpen is actually pretty solid....buoyed by Pedro Strop whose great numbers he had with Baltimore in 2011 are included and really make him tough as a partial season guy. I can't put them in my favorites group....not even tier 2....but they've been a surprise this whole competition, so who knows? 1908 New York Giants In Real Life They are the first (an maybe only) team that didn't make the postseason in real life. They did finish 98-56-3 in 2nd place, 1 game behind the Cubs. They represent a group of Giants teams from 1904-1913 that weren't always great, but won 5 Pennants and 1 World Series. There were a few seasons in that stretch where they didn't win 90+ games, but in most they did. How They Got Here After getting past the 1st round and winning their own season, they faced off against the 1952 Dodgers. I almost had the Dodgers penciled in for that one, but the Giants won by a solid 179-145 margin. Then, in Round 3 they ended up with 539 wins, beating the 2nd place 1947 Yankees by 28. Other Notes Our only team from the deadball era, it will be interesting to see how they fare. In Round 3, they won 107 games in their home season, so they might get off to a good start. Pitching will be tough with Red Ames and Christy Mathewson leading the way. On offense, they've got some great players too, with Mike Donlin, Larry Doyle and partial season star, Buck Herzog. Buck had a real life OBP of .448 that year in 218 PA....he was really tough in Round 3. They aren't a favorite for me because it is too hard to predict how they will do against so many great teams from later eras. 1927 New York Yankees In Real Life Babe and company went 110-44-1 in the regular season and then beat the Pirates in a sweep to win the World Series. This team represents the Babe Ruth era of the Yankees. He arrived in 1920 and the Yankees were a major force in the game the whole time he was there. This is the team that many consider the best, so it is fitting they are the ones that made it. How They Got Here Round One wasn't quite as easy as I thought it might be, but they made it through to Round 2 where they played the 1974 A's. That A's team represents another great dynasty, but the Yankees knocked them off easily, 185-139. In Round 3, they won with 533 wins, but faced a really tough test from the 1910 Giants (527 wins) and the 2021 Brewers (523 wins). Other Notes This team has to be among the tier one favorites. Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Earle Combs.....Waite Hoyt, Wilcy Moore....it doesn't get much better than those guys during this 27 season. However, this team struggled in the 2021 season they had to play in during Round 3. Before that, they never won less than 87 games....but int he 2021 season they only won 67 and almost blew their chance to get here. With two teams from that 2010s era in the Top 10, they will have to build a big lead or play better than they did in Round 3. I will also say here how surprised I am that this is the only Yankees team that made it to the Top 10. Just based on the sheer number of chances they had, I though at least 2 would make it. The offensive numbers they put up didn't always translate to other eras and when they did, the pitching just wasn't good enough to let them win enough games. We will see how the 27 team does. 1988 New York Mets In Real Life They went 100-60, but lost in the NLCS to the Dodgers. They represent a group of terrific Mets teams from about 1983-1990. They only went to one World Series (which they won) during that time, but they were a dominant team at times. It is a bit surprising that 1986 team wasn't the one to get here, but the 88 team is representing them very well. How They Got Here After a 1st round win that was a little surprising, they faced off against the 1982 Brewers in what turned out to be a mismatch, winning 198-126. In the 3rd Round, they continued their dominance, winning a Round 3 best 575 games to take Group 9 by a whopping 87 games over the 1903 Pirates. Other Notes This team might just be my favorite to win the whole thing. Their pitching may be up there with the 43 Cardinals with Dwight Gooden, Sid Fernandez, David Cone, etc. Their hitting is very good with Darryl Strawberry, Lenny Dykstra, Kevin McReynolds and Howard Johnson. Then, add in some partial season guys like Gregg Jefferies....with only 118 real life plate appearances, he is probably the partial season guy with the most impact in this Final Round. His 3rd Round numbers were MVP worthy. Oh yeah, Jeff Innis is another partial season guy who puts up big numbers as a closer. Those two guys do taint things for this team a bit, but there isn't anything to do about it now. 1971 Baltimore Orioles In Real Life They went 101-57, swept the A's in the LCS but then lost to the Pirates in the World Series in 7 games. We already talked about the Orioles teams of this time period. It was short window where they were this good, but to have two teams in the Top 10 is very impressive and speaks to how few weaknesses they have. How They Got Here After winning their own season in Round 1, they moved on to face the 2010 Phillies in the 2nd round. A 185-139 victory showed they were more than ready for Round 3. In that round, they put up 550 wins to take a 61 win victory over bot the 2004 Red Sox and 1999 Astros. Other Notes I'm not sure which Orioles team will end up better here. Obviously, many of the players are the same and game itself was pretty similar in both years. Looking at real life results, it appears the 69 team may be a bit better, but we'll just have to wait to see it play out. Which ever one it is, should be right in the mix. In the next post, we will start the seasons. Remember, we have 10 teams, so it will be 10 seasons....one in the "home year" of each team. The winner and "Greatest Team of All Time" will be the team that has the most wins after all 10 seasons. If by some chance there is a tie in this round, we will do a 2 season playoff with the teams involved with the most wins in that series being the winner. Any other strange occurrences (like a 3-way tie) will be dealt with at that time. I don't want to go down a rabbit hole of "what if's". Anyone want to pick a winner? I think I am going with the 1988 Mets, as strange as that sounds. For better or worse, the partial seasons of Jefferies and Innis seem to be just enough to put them over the top. Should be fun to find out!

Top Ten- Season 1.....1908
I had a few observations to make before we get to the results for this last round. I really like how the mix of teams gives us a team from so many different decades- one each from the 1900's, 1920's, 1940's, 1950's, 1960's and 1980's with 2 each from the 1970's and 2010's. The only decades without a team are the 1910's, 1930's, 1990's and 2000's (no 2020's, but only two options). It is interesting that the 90's actually had the most teams in Round 3 and none of them made it out. Many were still very good and ended up close, but none could break through. That also means the biggest stretch without a team goes from 1989-2010. I may think of more observations as we go along, but that's all for now! Let's get to the results!!
I'm starting with the bottom of the standings for each season. I'll list the top 3 hitters and pitchers for each team (with some leeway up to 5 or so if needed). League leading stats will be in bold. If something warrants an extra note, I'll add that at the end. Trying to keep the level of detail manageable! 1927 Yankees- 70 Wins- I did NOT have them as my last place team in any season....wow. Top Hitters CF Earle Combs- .298/.353/.373, 29 doubles, 9 triples, 0 HR, 62 R, 39 RBI, 14 SB, 3.5 WAR.....Among the top ten in many offensive categories, including 2nd in hits. 1B Lou Gehrig- .277/.337/.381, 22 doubles, 13 triples, 5 HR, 64 R, 55 RBI, 12 SB, 3.2 WAR......Won the Silver Slugger at 1B.....Also among the top 10 in a number of categories, the best being 4th in triples. LF Babe Ruth- .239/.340/.329, 20 doubles, 4 triples, 7 HR, 53 R, 59 RBI, 6 SB, 6.4 WAR....Won both the Gold Glove and Silver Slugger for LF.....Also finished 1st in strikeouts with 132. Top Pitchers Waite Hoyt- 19-20, 382.2 IP, 2.19 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, 145 K, 4.6 WAR.....Also top 3 in GS, IP and Batters Faced. Herb Pennock- 16-24, 364 IP, 2.08 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, 114 K, 5.4 WAR....9th in ERA and 3rd in losses is something you don't see often. Wilcy Moore- 14-22, 327.1 IP, 2.14 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, 131 K, 4.2 WAR....5 of his 14 wins were complete game shutouts......Finished 3rd with a 59% GB rate. Other Notes - SP George Pipgras led the league in Ks with 225, Walks with 140, Games Pitched with 48, K/9 with 5.4 and gave up 0 HR in 373.1 IP. - DH/C Pat Collins was 2nd in the league with 87 walks....but when you hit .177 with a .234 SLG, that doesn't matter much. 1988 Mets- 73 Wins- Really thought their pitching would play well in this era Top Hitters 3B Gregg Jefferies- .266/.302/.369, 31 doubles, 13 triples, 2 HR, 63 R, 63 RBI, 22 SB, 3.1 WAR....Top 4 in doubles and triples, top 10 in RBI. CF Lenny Dykstra- .245/.276/.301, 16 doubles, 10 triples, 0 HR, 68 R, 36 RBI, 87 SB, 4.0 WAR.....9th in triples, stole 4 bases in one game against the 69 Orioles 1B/DH Dave Magadan- .260/.339/.312, 11 doubles, 3 triples, 1 HR, 28 R, 32 RBI, 0 SB, 3.6 WAR.....Only 385 AB, but was 2nd on the team in WAR to Dykstra Top Pitchers Sid Fernandez- 21-16, 365.1 IP, 1.90 ERA, .97 WHIP, 218 K, 5.2 WAR....Was 2nd in the league with 11 Shutouts, including a NO-HITTER against the 1971 Orioles.....Also finished 1st in H/9 with 6.08, 2nd in Ks and 2nd in WHIP.....A great season on what ended up a bad team. Bob Ojeda- 17-24, 372.1 IP, 2.34 ERA, 1.11 WHIP, 187 K, 8.7 WAR.....Top 10 in a number of categories, including 2nd in WAR......In fact the Mets pitching staff actually finished 1st in Pitcher WAR despite how poorly the team finished. Jeff Innis- 1-1, 6 Saves, 11 IP, .82 ERA, .91 WHIP, 3 K, 0.0 WAR......I know, he only pitched 11 innings, but he was 2nd in saves so I included him! Other Notes - None 1971 Orioles- 73 Wins- One more team will join these two with 73 wins next. Top Hitters CF Merv Rettenmund- .285/.354/.357, 19 doubles, 10 triples, 2 HR, 83 R, 42 RBI, 28 SB, 7.0 WAR.....3rd in runs, top 10 in many categories LF Don Buford- .251/.319/.317, 15 doubles, 9 triples, 2 HR, 54 R, 71 RBI, 31 SB, 2.0 WAR.....4th in RBI RF Frank Robinson- .245/.315/.305, 15 doubles, 3 triples, 5 HR, 41 R, 67 RBI, 4 SB, 2.9 WAR....5th in HR, 6th in RBI Top Pitchers Jim Palmer- 21-17, 375 IP, 2.16 ERA, 1.11 WHIP, 160 K, 5.2 WAR Dave McNally- 19-21, 354 IP, 2.29 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, 96 K, 2.4 WAR.....1st in BABIP at .225, 4th in Shutouts with 8 Mike Cuellar- 19-21, 349 IP, 2.37 ERA, 1.06 WHIP, 116 K, 3.8 WAR Other Notes - Pat Dobson led the league in losses with 27. 2019 Dodgers- 73 Wins- So I think that it 3 of my "favorites" in the bottom 4 of this 1908 season. This era was always going to be a bit tough for the Reds because their pitching isn't quite as good as some others, so this isn't bad. Top Hitters 2B Jackie Robinson- .299/.369/.407, 35 doubles, 11 triples, 3 HR, 95 R, 50 RBI, 23 SB, 9.4 WAR.....Also finished 1st in EBH with 49, 2nd in R, 2nd in WAR and top 10 in most other categories.....Finished 3rd in the MVP voting RF Carl Furillo- .269/.315/.340, 23 doubles, 6 triples, 3 HR, 61 R, 69 RBI, 1 SB, 5.2 WAR CF Duke Snider- .282/.342/.361, 30 doubles, 6 triples, 1 HR, 57 R, 65 RBI, 11 SB, 2.9 WAR Top Pitchers Ralph Branca- 24-16, 353.2 IP, 2.65 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, 161 K, 5.7 WAR Preacher Roe- 19-22, 364 IP, 2.05 ERA, 1.06 WHIP, 158 K, 5.0 WAR.....Finished top 10 in many categories, including 1st in Quality Starts with 36 and 1st in QS% at .878 Russ Meyer- 14-9, 219.2 IP, 2.58 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, 90 K, 1.7 WAR Other Notes - 3B Billy Cox scored 5 runs in a game against the 71 Orioles. 1943 Cardinals- 95 Wins- I knew they'd be near the top with that pitching....we'll see how the later years go for them. With this start, they might be tough to beat. Top Hitters CF Stan Musial- .324/.385/.446, 28 doubles, 17 triples, 3 HR, 63 R, 66 RBI, 8 SB, 9.1 WAR.....Won Silver Slugger for CF.....Finished 1st in triples, Extra Base Hits and pretty much all the "percent" measures other than BA and OBP (2nd in both), like ISO, SLG, RC, OPS, wOBA, etc.....Finished 4th in MVP voting C Walker Cooper- .268/.301/.341, 20 doubles, 5 triples, 3 HR, 60 R, 58 RBI, 2 SB, 5.0 WAR 2B Lou Klein- .255/.295/.361, 22 doubles, 14 triples, 1 HR, 52 R, 49 RBI, 5 SB, 7.4 WAR.....Won the Gold Glove at 2B.....Was voted Rookie of the Year.....Finished 3rd in triples Top Pitchers Howie Pollett- 29-12, 364.1 IP, 1.68 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, 163 K, 6.3 WAR....Pitched a PERFECT GAME against the 1908 Giants.....Led the league with 14 Shutouts, 2nd in Wins, 2nd in ERA, top 10 in pretty much every pitching category......Finished 3rd in Cy Young voting Mort Cooper- 22-18, 385 IP, 1.68 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, 167 K, 7.7 WAR.....Also led the league in CG and CG% with 40 and .976.......Top 10 in most every other pitching category Al Brazle- 20-16, 333.1 IP, 1.78 ERA, 1.06 WHIP, 109 K, 4.4 WAR.....Gave up 0 HR on the season......Finished 3rd in Rookie of the Year voting.....1st in GB% at 64% Other Notes - SS Marty Marion won the Gold Glove and came in 3rd in WAR at 9.4. His Zone Rating was 44.1.....the two Mark Belangers were at 13. 1908 Giants- 100 Wins- Not surprising they finished 1st....they were dominant in their era through the whole competition. We'll see if it continues! Top Ten- Season 2.....1927
Here's how things shook out in the 1927 season between these teams. Some teams did very similarly to 1908 and some did much differently. There is a clear front runner after these first two seasons, though.
1971 Orioles- 70 Wins- These guys are off to a very poor start...worst of the Top 10 after the first two seasons. Plus, they are falling farther behind the 69 Orioles in the side battle for Baltimore! Top Hitters C Andy Etchebarren- .330/.375/.440, 17 doubles, 3 triples, 9 HR, 53 R, 62 RBI, 2 SB, 3.5 WAR RF Frank Robinson- .285/.363/.393, 26 doubles, 5 triples, 9 HR, 61 R, 89 RBI, 0 SB, 2.6 WAR LF Don Buford- .268/.346/.399, 27 doubles, 9 triples, 11 HR, 83 R, 85 RBI, 14 SB, 2.1 WAR Top Pitchers Grant Jackson- 7-7, 164.1 IP, 3.07 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, 60 K, 3.1 WAR.....Also led the league in K/BB at 1.88 Pat Dobson- 14-16, 268.1 IP, 4.13 ERA, 1.42 WHIP, 85 K, 3.2 WAR Dave McNally- 14-17, 257.2 IP, 3.91 ERA, 1.33 WHIP, 54 K, 2.1 WAR....Was 4th in Shutouts with 3 Other Notes - Jim Palmer was the unfortunate league leader in losses with 20 2019 Dodgers- 74 Wins- I really thought this team would be stronger....but their hitting may come out a lot more as the years go on. Top Hitters 1B David Freese- .327/.394/.444, 32 doubles, 4 triples, 10 HR, 79 R, 74 RBI, 0 SB, 3.5 WAR RF Cody Bellinger- .276/.359/.406, 27 doubles, 6 triples, 12 HR, 67 R, 67 RBI, 10 SB, 4.4 WAR.....Won the Gold Glove in RF 3B Justin Turner- .255/.306/.358, 14 doubles, 5 triples, 13 HR, 73 R, 77 RBI, 0 SB, 1.4 WAR.....Was 3rd in HR Top Pitchers Tony Gonsolin- 16-8, 260.1 IP, 2.70 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, 79 K, 3.7 WAR.....Finished 2nd in Rookie of the Year voting.....Was top 10 in many pitching categories, including 4th in ERA and 5th in WHIP Clayton Kershaw- 12-9, 17 Saves, 137 IP, 3.22 ERA, 1.42 WHIP, 58 K, .6 WAR Hyun-Jin Ryu- 11-19, 255.2 IP, 4.19 ERA, 1.43 WHIP, 71 K, 5.1 WAR.....Pitched a NO-HITTER against the 71 Orioles Other Notes - Max Muncy had 5 Walk-Off hits during the season 1969 Orioles- 76 Wins- This version of the Orioles is 12 games ahead of the 71 team....they've been 6 games better each season so far. The Cards dropped off quite a bit from 1908, but they have a good win total overall. With 8 seasons left, they aren't out of anything yet, but they better pick it up soon. Top Hitters CF Earle Combs- .334/.395/.457, 31 doubles, 19 triples, 3 HR, 112 R, 49 RBI, 10 SB, 3.9 WAR.....Top 10 in many categories, including 4th in triples and runs 1B Lou Gehrig- .358/.439/.586, 57 doubles, 22 triples, 11 HR, 111 R, 110 RBI, 7 SB, 8.6 WAR.....Won the Silver Slugger at 1B.....Was named League MVP......Also led the league in Total Bases (344), Extra Base Hits (90), RC (160.73), RC/27 (10.64), ISO (.228), wOBA (.446), OPS (1.025), wRC+ (186.5) and finished in the top 10 in many others. Top Ten- Season 3......1943
2011 Rangers- 68 Wins- Worst season we've seen so far. Not surprised they didn't do well in a 1943 season with how much pitching is the focus.
Top Hitters C Mike Napoli- .285/.393/.414, 16 doubles, 6 triples, 11 HR, 65 R, 59 RBI, 1 SB, 7.0 WAR.....Won Silver Slugger at C......Finished 3rd in WAR SS Elvis Andrus- .284/.357/.334, 20 doubles, 5 triples, 0 HR, 74 R, 36 RBI, 18 SB, 4.4 WAR CF Josh Hamilton- .269/.309/.399, 32 doubles, 5 triples, 12 HR, 50 R, 73 RBI, 1 SB, 4.1 WAR Top Pitchers Colby Lewis- 13-11, 236.2 IP, 2.59 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, 90 K, 3.4 WAR.....3rd in Quality Starts with 28 Matt Harrison- 13-13, 218 IP, 3.26 ERA, 1.36 WHIP, 83 K, 2.6 WAR Neftali Feliz- 6-4, 7 Saves, 89.2 IP, 2.41 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, 41 K, -.3 WAR Other Notes - None 1988 Mets- 76 Wins- I am surprised, however, at seeing this team here. Their pitching seems more than strong enough to compete in this era, but the hitting really let them down. Top Hitters 3B Gregg Jefferies- .264/.310/.378, 22 doubles, 9 triples, 11 HR, 53 R, 69 RBI, 6 SB, 2.8 WAR CF Lenny Dykstra- .262/.301/.319, 20 doubles, 4 triples, 3 HR, 73 R, 44 RBI, 39 SB, 3.6 WAR......2nd in SB RF Darryl Strawberry- .229/.295/.362, 24 doubles, 8 triples, 14 HR, 72 R, 68 RBI, 18 SB, .8 WAR Top Pitchers Bob Ojeda- 16-15, 282 IP, 2.74 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, 111 K, 6.7 WAR.....Top 10 in a number of categories Sid Fernandez- 13-12, 239.2 IP, 2.67 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, 121 K, 3.0 WAR.....Pitched a NO-HITTER against the 43 Cardinals.....1st in K/9 with 4.54 Jeff Innis- 10-5, 19 Saves, 92 IP, 1.57 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, 18 K, 1.2 WAR....Won Reliever of the Year Award Other Notes - Dwight Gooden had a strange season. He went 9-20 and led the league in losses. He threw 258 innings with a 3.84 ERA and 1.54 WHIP. However, he also had the leagues second best WAR at 6.3, led the league in FIP- at 78.1, a 2.53 FIP and a pretty unlucky .337 BABIP. - Tom McCarthy threw 59.2 innings in relief with a 1.06 ERA and .85 WHIP....his BABIP was the antithesis of Gooden's at .147. 1908 Giants- 80 Wins- So I actually ran this season twice. In the first sim, this Giants team had 107 wins! However, the reason I had to rerun it is that every player on all the teams got imported twice. I have no idea how that happened, but it seemed to be on every team. This team took the best advantage of that with two Herzogs and Donlins starting and a pitching staff with two Mathewsons and two Ames. Only having one of each player really brought them back to Earth. They went from the team I though would win everything after this season.....to making things a little more wide open. Top Hitters RF Mike Donlin- .323/.368/.425, 28 doubles, 9 triples, 5 HR, 66 R, 96 RBI, 16 SB, 4.1 WAR.....Top 10 in multiple categories, including 3rd in both BA and RBI 2B Buck Herzog- .258/.419/.307, 23 doubles, 2 triples, 0 HR, 101 R, 44 RBI, 22 SB, 5.9 WAR.....Won Rookie of the Year and the Gold Glove at 2B.....Finished 2nd in R, OBP and Walks with 146 C Roger Bresnahan- .291/.413/.378, 31 doubles, 3 triples, 1 HR, 77 R, 66 RBI, 7 SB, 5.9 WAR.....3rd in OBP Top Pitchers Christy Mathewson- 21-10, 305.1 IP, 2.21 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, 118 K, 5.6 WAR.....Won the Cy Young Award.....Also finished 1st in Winning % at .677 (impressive for a team with a losing record!) and Quality Starts with 29 Red Ames- 18-13, 273 IP, 3.63 ERA, 1.48 WHIP, 120 K, 5.1 WAR Hooks Wiltse- 13-16, 275.2 IP, 2.91 ERA, 1.32 WHIP, 93 K, 2.0 WAR Other Notes - DH Larry Doyle finished first in AB with 657 and 2nd in RBI with 99. 1971 Orioles- 82 Wins- Best finish so far, but still behind the 69 team. Top Hitters CF Merv Rettenmund- .291/.411/.348, 19 doubles 4 triples, 2 HR, 92 R, 60 RBI, 9 SB, 8.2 WAR....Won the Gold Glove in CF SS Mark Belanger- .272/.342/.341, 24 doubles, 6 triples, 0 HR, 60 R, 40 RBI, 1 SB, 4.9 WAR....Had 3 Walk-off hits on the season LF Don Buford- .254/.347/.373, 31 doubles, 5 triples, 9 HR, 80 R, 64 RBI, 3.5 WAR Top Pitchers Dave McNally- 20-12, 259 IP, 2.40 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, 74 K, 2.7 WAR....Finished in the top 10 in a number of categories, including 1st in Shutouts with 6 and 2nd in Wins Pat Dobson- 13-15, 269.1 IP, 2.87 ERA, 1.24 WHIP, 109 K, 4.3 WAR.....1st in K/BB with 1.58 Jim Palmer- 11-17, 257.1 IP, 2.73 ERA, 1.40 WHIP, 128 K, 2.5 WAR.....3rd in Ks and K/9 with 4.48 Other Notes - None 1953 Dodgers- 82 Wins- Their home season is up next and they will need a good performance. Really thought they'd be tougher, but maybe the more modern seasons will be where they shine. Top Hitters RF Carl Furillo- .326/.358/.429, 37 doubles, 7 triples, 4 HR, 69 R, 63 RBI, 0 SB, 4.5 WAR....Also 2nd in Doubles, 3rd in Hits (201) and 3rd in Total Bases (264) 2B Jackie Robinson- .276/.347/.372, 31 doubles, 7 triples, 5 HR, 85 R, 41 RBI, 4 SB, 5.5 WAR CF Duke Snider- .278/.356/.417, 35 doubles, 9 triples, 8 HR, 79 R, 67 RBI, 7 SB, 3.8 WAR.....2nd in Extra Base Hits with 52 Top Pitchers Bob Milliken- 12-8, 22 Saves, 115 IP, 2.50 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, 38 K, -.1 WAR.....3rd in Saves and 3rd in Reliever of the Year voting Carl Erskine- 11-16, 265.1 IP, 3.12 ERA, 1.24 WHIP, 129 K, 2.8 WAR....2nd in Strikeouts Clem Labine- 4-1, 6 Saves, 63.2 IP, .99 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, 20 K, .7 WAR Other Notes - Jim Gilliam was 3rd in triples with 11. 1927 Yankees- 83 Wins- The standings for this season really start to tighten up here. This team seems like they will do better in the middle years before bullpens started to get used more than they can handle. Top Hitters 1B Lou Gehrig- .305/.404/.505, 35 doubles, 10 triples, 21 HR, 96 R, 92 RBI, 7 SB, 6.6 WAR....Won the Silver Slugger at 1B.....A 3-time Player of the Month.....Finished 2nd in MVP voting......Also first in total bases (298), Extra Base Hits (66), RC (130), RC/27 (8.22), ISO (.200), wOBA (.422), OPS (.909) and wRC+ (177.9).....Had 4 Walk-Off Hits LF Babe Ruth- .274/.435/.427, 18 doubles, 4 triples, 17 HR, 84 R, 82 RBI, 0 SB, 8.0 WAR.....Won the MVP Award (Not sure why he won over Gehrig, other than WAR?).....Won the Gold Glove and Silver Slugger Awards at LF.....1st in Walks with 148, 2nd or 3rd in most all of the categories Gehrig led in CF Earle Combs- .326/.391/.431, 23 doubles, 20 triples, 1 HR, 94 R, 47 RBI, 11 SB, 6.5 WAR.....Won the Silver Slugger at CF.....Finished 3rd in MVP Voting (that gives the Yankees the top 3 guys!).....1st in hits (204), Top 10 in most other categories and top 3 in many. Top Pitchers Waite Hoyt- 19-12, 279.2 IP, 2.35 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, 110 K, 6.0 WAR.....2nd in WHIP, 3rd in Wins and WAR, top 10 in most other categories Herb Pennock- 15-14, 240.1 IP, 2.92 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, 72 K, 3.8 WAR Wilcy Moore- 9-10, 192.2 IP, 3.08 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, 73 K, 3.8 WAR....Finished 3rd in Rookie of the Year voting Other Notes - DH Pat Collins had a 7 RBI game against the 76 Reds. - George Pipgras again had league leading totals at both ends of the spectrum. He led the league in both walks (158) and HR/9 (0.04....gave up 1 HR in 253.2 IP). The even stranger thing? That 1 HR was hit by Pee Wee Reese of the 53 Dodgers....and it was the only HR he hit all season! 2019 Dodgers- 83 Wins- The best showing for this team....they should keep improving as we get closer to their home season, but we'll see if that happens. Top Hitters 1B David Freese- .316/.390/.445, 34 doubles, 3 triples, 12 HR, 62 R, 67 RBI, 0 SB, 5.7 WAR....Top 10 in most categories, including 2nd in SLG, wOBA (.397), wRC+ (160.3) and 3rd in OPS (.835) CF Alex Verdugo- .268/.311/.377, 28 doubles, 8 triples, 9 HR, 79 R, 54 RBI, 2 SB, 4.0 WAR.....Hit 3 Lead Off HR.....Hit for the Cycle against the 43 Cardinals 3B Justin Turner- .261/.332/.342, 15 doubles, 2 triples, 10 HR, 70 R, 44 RBI, 0 SB, 3.8 WAR Top Pitchers Clayton Kershaw- 11-11, 200.2 IP, 2.65 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, 92 K, 2.9 WAR....Won the Gold Glove at P Kenta Maeda- 16-10, 221.2 IP, 2.76 ERA, 1.32 WHIP, 102 K, 3.1 WAR Hyun-Jin Ryu- 14-12, 242.1 IP, 3.19 ERA, 1.27 WHIP, 75 K, 4.8 WAR....1st in BB/9 with 1.93 Other Notes - Cody Bellinger won the Gold Glove for RF. - Dustin May led the league in games pitched with 67. h was also 2nd in saves with 23. 1969 Orioles- 84 Wins- Creeping up in the win totals, but still pretty close through most of the league. Getting clear that this 69 team is slightly superior to the 71 team...at least so far. Top Ten- Season 4......1953
1927 Yankees- 73 Wins- For some reason, the great Yankees teams from history don't translate well to other eras. This 27 team made it here, but it wasn't easy....and now they are struggling. Pitching is an issue, but so is offense. The lack of using Bob Meusel is hurting them as well as how their numbers translate into ratings, it seems. In 1927, Babe Ruth hit .356.....but he often struggles to hit much above .260 here. On the 20-80 rating for contact, he imports in at 45. Gehrig comes in at 50, despite hitting .373. Plus Babe an Lou strike out an incredible number of times in some seasons. The list goes on. OK....Yankees fan rant over!

Top Ten- Season 5......1969
We are halfway there....and this competition is still pretty much up in the air! Let's see if the 1969 season sheds any light on who the favorite might be.
1969 Orioles- 69 Wins- Yikes! Not only did the 69 Orioles finish behind their 71 counterparts again, but they finished in dead last for their home season. That's not going to cut it in this competition. Top Hitters 1B Boog Powell- .293/.354/.419, 12 doubles, 2 triples, 20 HR, 72 R, 76 RBI, 0 SB, 2.5 WAR RF Frank Robinson- .254/.347/.419, 17 doubles, 5 triples, 23 HR, 83 R, 61 RBI, 2 SB, 3.9 WAR.....Had a 7 RBI game against the 71 Orioles, including a walk-off 3-run HR LF Curt Motton- .239/.321/.423, 20 doubles, 0 triples, 29 HR, 78 R, 74 RBI, 3 SB, 2.2 WAR.....3rd in HR.....3 of his HR were Walk-offs Top Pitchers Mike Cuellar- 16-12, 270.1 IP, 2.73 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, 204 K, 5.7 WAR.....Won the Cy Young Award.....Also led the league in Quality Starts (27) and was 2nd in ERA....Top 10 in most other categories Jim Palmer- 10-16, 252.2 IP, 3.88 ERA, 1.37 WHIP, 154 K, 2.1 WAR Eddie Watt- 8-3, 3 Saves, 59.2 IP, 1.81 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, 32 K, .1 WAR Other Notes - Paul Blair won the Gold Glove in CF. Top Hitters LF Josh Hamilton- .282/.314/.475, 27 doubles, 5 triples, 27 HR, 77 R, 95 RBI, 2 SB, 4.4 WAR.....2nd in Total Bases (291) and 3rd in Extra Base Hits (59) 1B Michael Young- .295/.347/.366, 32 doubles, 6 triples, 0 HR, 77 R, 55 RBI, 4 SB, 2.1 WAR 3B Adrian Beltre- .262/.294/.411, 31 doubles, 0 triples, 20 HR, 74 R, 71 RBI, 0 SB, 2.5 WAR Top Pitchers Colby Lewis- 17-11, 224.2 IP, 4.45 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, 156 K, 1.2 WAR CJ Wilson- 9-18, 226.1 IP, 4.53 ERA, 1.32 WHIP, 198 K, 3.9 WAR....3rd in K/9 at 7.87 Neftali Feliz- 6-3, 4 Saves, 64.1 IP, 1.96 ERA, 1.43 WHIP, 36 K, .1 WAR Other Notes - Mike Napoli won the Silver Slugger at C. - Ian Kinsler hit 3 HR in a game against the 71 Orioles. - Endy Chavez was 3rd in triples with 8. - Nelson Cruz was 3rd in HR with 29 and 3rd in ISO with .203 1927 Yankees- 73 Wins- The Yankees fan in me wishes they were performing better, but the pitching just isn't deep enough and other than the big 3 of Ruth/Gehrig/Combs, the other hitters don't do much....and even the Big 3 are usually well below where they were in real life. They did finally use Bob Meusel as a more full-time player this season....but he didn't help much. Top Hitters CF Earle Combs- .317/.366/.408, 23 doubles, 8 triples, 6 HR, 74 R, 58 RBI, 13 SB, 3.6 WAR....2nd in hits with 199, 3rd in BA and triples 1B Lou Gehrig- .276/.357/.505, 27 doubles, 7 triples, 32 HR, 77 R, 100 RBI, 5 SB, 5.0 WAR.....Won the Silver Slugger at 1B.....1st in Total Bases (302), Extra Base Hits (66)......2nd in HR and ISO (.229) LF Babe Ruth- .250/.416/.494, 18 doubles, 3 triples, 33 HR, 81 R, 69 RBI, 0 SB, 7.8 WAR.....Won the Gold Glove and Silver Slugger in LF.....2nd in MVP Award voting.....Also 1st in RC/27 (8.02), ISO (.244), wOBA (.407), OPS (.910) and wRC+ (166.5).....Also led the league in Ks with 203 Top Pitchers Waite Hoyt- 16-10, 267 IP, 3.13 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, 192 K, 6.6 WAR.....Top 10 in most categories, including 2nd in WAR and 3rd in Shutouts with 5. Only 9 games between the 1st and last place teams this season, so things are definitely still up for grabs.
2019 Dodgers- 77 Wins- They seemed to be one the rise and, while they didn't fall too far behind this season, a last place finish isn't good. Top Ten- Season 8......1988
I'm going to do things a little differently from here on out. With just 3 seasons left, there needs to be a little suspense! Plus, I think we all have a good idea of the top players on each team year to year. There are a few variations, but they don't change all that much.
So, from here on out, I will give the order of the standings, but not the win total (until the end). I will just go through the Award Winners and a few other standout performances for the remaining 3 seasons. Hopefully it will still be interesting and retain a little suspense for who the top team will be. 1988 Standings 1. 1943 Cardinals 2. 1969 Orioles 3. 1953 Dodgers 4. 2019 Dodgers 5. 1988 Mets 6. 1971 Orioles 7. 2011 Rangers 8. 1976 Reds 9. 1927 Yankees 10. 1908 Giants Award Winners Gold Glove Awards P- Carl Erskine (53 Dodgers) C- Roy Campanella (53 Dodgers) 1B- Dave Magadan (88 Mets) 2B- Buck Herzog (08 Giants) 3B- Brooks Robinson (69 Orioles) SS- Marty Marion (43 Cardinals) LF- David Murphy (11 Rangers) CF- Paul Blair (69 Orioles) RF- Stan Musial (43 Cardinals) Silver Slugger Awards.....League Leaders in Bold C- Roy Campanella (53 Dodgers)- .290/.362/.525, 25 doubles, 1 triple, 30 HR, 80 R, 86 RBI, 1 SB, 7.0 WAR 1B- Lou Gehrig (27 Yankees)- .278/.363/.554, 37 doubles, 6 triples, 36 HR, 83 R, 110 RBI, 5 SB, 5.3 WAR 2B- Joe Morgan (76 Reds)- .273/.393/.449, 24 doubles, 6 triples, 20 HR, 88 R, 102 RBI, 65 SB, 4.7 WAR 3B- Gregg Jefferies (88 Mets)- .315/.370/.520, 33 doubles, 7 triples, 25 HR, 88 R, 99 RBI, 15 SB, 6.4 WAR SS- Pee Wee Reese (53 Dodgers)- .227/.310/.384, 30 doubles, 4 triples, 14 HR, 66 R, 58 RBI, 19 SB, 3.0 WAR LF- Josh Hamilton (11 Rangers)- .326/.350/.525, 31 doubles, 4 triples, 28 HR, 78 R, 111 RBI, 4 SB, 5.6 WAR CF- Duke Snider (53 Dodgers)- .282/.348/.468, 30 doubles, 3 triples, 24 HR, 81 R, 87 RBI, 9 SB, 3.9 WAR RF- Stan Musial (43 Cardinals)- .344/.402/.517, 38 doubles, 11 triples, 13 HR, 71 R, 67 RBI, 3 SB, 8.0 WAR DH- Don Buford (69 Orioles)- .277/.359/.432, 28 doubles, 3 triples, 22 HR, 107 R, 64 RBI, 36 SB, 3.2 WAR Rookie of the Year Buck Herzog (08 Giants)- .239/.398/.307, 27 doubles, 2 triples, 2 HR, 88 R, 44 RBI, 4.3 WAR Reliever of the Year Harry Gumbert (43 Cardinals)- 6-7, 37 Saves, 76.1 IP, 1.30 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, 43 K, 1.9 WAR Cy Young Award- Top 3....League Leaders in Bold 3. Mort Cooper (43 Cardinals)- 18-14, 275.2 IP, 2.84 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, 182 K, 6.5 WAR 2. David Cone (88 Mets)- 18-11, 253.2 IP, 2.63 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, 200 K, 5.6 WAR Winner- Howie Pollett (43 Cardinals)- 21-10, 281 IP, 1.60 ERA, .93 WHIP, 205 K, 7.4 WAR MVP Award- Top 3....Stas are all above 3. Josh Hamilton (11 Rangers) 2. Stan Musial (43 Cardinals) Winner- Howie Pollett (43 Cardinals).....First time I've seen a pitcher win this through the whole competition! Other Notable Performances - Red Ames (08 Giants) led the league in Ks with 216. - An interesting decision was made by the 27 Yankees. Babe Ruth was made into a Relief Pitcher and only got 2 AB the whole season. Obviously his pitching skills were not good in 1927, so the stats he had were terrible....a 7.23 ERA and 1.96 WHIP. The game has never done that with him before up until now, so it is strange. Really puts them at a big disadvantage. It also showed why Bob Meusel should have been used as a full time player all along as he finally got his chance and hit .321 with a league leading 63 doubles. - Pete Rose (76 Reds) had a 6-6 game against the 08 Giants. - Merv Rettenmund (71 Orioles) hit 15 HR and 7 of them were Lead-off Homers. - Dave McNally (71 Orioles) pitched a NO-HITTER against the 2019 Dodgers. - Gregg Jefferies (88 Mets) had a 20-game hitting streak. - Keith Hernandez (88 Mets) had a 7-RBI game against the 08 Giants. - Jeff Innis (88 Mets) was 2nd in Reliever of the Year voting, but was the only relief pitcher to get MVP votes. He went 11-3 with 32 Saves and a 1.75 ERA. - Jackie Robinson (53 Dodgers) tied for the league lead in R with 107, was 2nd in doubles with 47 and 2nd in WAR at 7.4. - Pee Wee Reese (53 Dodgers) had a 3-HR game with 8 RBI against the 1969 Orioles. - Jim Gilliam (53 Dodgers) led the league in triples with 16. - Ben Wade went 9-1 out of the bullpen for the 53 Dodgers. - Alex Verdugo (19 Dodgers) had a 26-game hitting streak. - Cody Bellinger had a 3-HR day with 8 RBI against the 76 Reds. - AJ Pollock (19 Dodgers) hit a walk-off grand slam against the 1969 Orioles. - Don Buford (69 Orioles) hit 8 Lead-off HR. - Boog Powell (69 Orioles) tied for the league lead in RBI at 111. He also hit .301 with 33 HR. He had 2 6-RBI games...both against the 2011 Rangers. He also had a 20-game hitting streak. - Dick Hall (69 Orioles) led the league in Saves with 45. - Howie Pollett (43 Cardinals) led the league with 9 Shutouts. We'll make a big jump to 2011 in the next season!

Final Results!!
Well, we made it! Here are the final results....in reverse order....to find out what team from 1903-2022 is the team OOTP considers the Greatest of All Time. At least the way I determined it!
1927 New York Yankees- 713 Wins- In somewhat of a surprise, the famous 27 Yankees finished in last place for this final round. They are still a Top Ten team, but the depth of their pitching, the lack of use of Bob Meusel, the way the game imports Ruth and Gehrig and the strange use of Ruth as a relief pitcher the last 3 seasons all contributed to their troubles. They also didn't have many good hitters after Ruth, Gehrig, Combs and to a much lesser degree, Lazzeri. It's possible they could have done better using a different format, but they actually get a lot of credit to overcome the numerous issues they had to make it this far. 2011 Texas Rangers- 764 Wins- This was the surprise team of this whole competition. They were a surprise to make it out of their own season....out of their 1-on-1 matchup and especially out of their Round 3 group. They just kept hitting and their pitching was always just enough. They finally reached their limit in the Top 10, but finishing 9th is a huge accomplishment. The group of Michael Young, Josh Hamilton, Adrian Beltre and Mike Napoli were super tough most every season and they got help from other guys as well. They had a couple of poor seasons and no really good ones as a team, so that led to their 9th place finish. 1971 Baltimore Orioles- 780 Wins- One of the two Oriole teams from this era that made it this far, the 71 team finished just below their 1969 counterparts. They were never horrible, but also never won more than 83 games. That leads to an 8th place finish. 1969 Baltimore Orioles- 784 Wins- Only 4 wins between the two Oriole teams! It was super close in every season, so that was not a surprise....and actually refreshing to see two teams with so many similarities finish so close together. I take that as something OOTP did well. Both teams had solid pitching and great defense....but this one had just a little better hitting that gave them a few more wins. 1908 New York Giants- 792 Wins- The first two seasons of the Final Round made it seem like this team would take the top spot. Winning 100 in 1908 and 99 in 1927 to take a big lead showed how strong they could be in the right era. This was a competition about multiple eras, however, so 63 wins in 1988 and 65 wins in 2019 led them to this 6th place finish. Middle of the pack in the Top Ten teams of all time is nothing to sneeze at, however! Guys like Buck Herzog, Mike Donlin, Larry Doyle, Red Ames and Christy Mathewson were consistently among the best in the league. A few more pitchers and another hitter or two who could hit some HR in later years may have sent them over the top. 2019 Los Angeles Dodgers- 830 Wins- A 5th place finish for the most recent team in the Top Ten was a very good showing. 97 wins in their home season helped a lot. This is a team filled with power hitters and some good pitching. They were kind of inconsistent, but did enough to be the 5th best team ever! 1953 Brooklyn Dodgers- 847 Wins- We are in the top four now and these are pretty much the teams I thought would be here, at least based on what I saw up until this round. This Dodgers team struggled in the 2019 season with only 72 wins. After 87 wins in each of the 1988 and 2011 seasons, that was a big disappointment for them. Another 87 wins might have put them in 2nd or maybe even the top spot. A team with Jackie Robinson, Roy Campanella, Carl Furillo and Duke Snider is going to put up a good showing, though, and this team certainly did. 1976 Cincinnati Reds- 853 Wins- The 3rd best team of all time is from The Big Red Machine....certainly not a surprise! If anything, many may have expected even better from this team. A disappointing 81 wins in their home season followed by just 76 wins in 1988 really hurt....despite 97 wins in the final 2019 season. This team's hitting was always solid, but I think their pitching was the reason they didn't quite make it into that top spot. 1988 New York Mets- 867 Wins- When I started this whole thing, I thought the 86 Mets might make it into at least a 3rd round matchup, but I never thought it would be the 88 Mets instead.....and then to have them end up the second best team of all time? Never imagined that! Their 73 wins in the very first season in 1908 is the main culprit for them not being the top team. They almost made it with an impressive 104 wins in the 2011 season, though. That means that with 870 total wins, the 1943 St. Louis Cardinals end up being the Greatest Team of All Time according to OOTP!!! Would anyone have guessed they would be the top team when this all started? I sure didn't! Once I saw how dominant their pitching was, though, it became clear that they would be very tough to beat. They had a couple of seasons with win totals in the 70s, but finished strong down the stretch with 93 wins in 1988, 90 wins in 2011 and 94 wins in 2019. That was the difference, as they only beat the 88 Mets by 3 wins! Howie Pollett, Harry Brecheen, Mort Cooper, Max Lanier, Harry Gumbert and Al Brazle are all names that the majority of people don't know.....even pretty serious baseball fans have probably never heard them. However, as a group...at least in OOTP.....they are the most dominant group of pitchers in all eras that we had in this whole competition. An offense led by Stan Musial, Walker Cooper and a few others scored just enough runs be in this top spot. Congrats to them and any Cardinals fans out there reading this! Other people may come out with different results, but for my money, this Cardinals team.....led by some of the best pitching you will ever see on any team.....is at least ONE of the greatest teams of all time. If not this individual team, then at least the Cardinals teams of this era deserve a lot more credit than they get for their level of greatness. More people definitely need to know the names of the pitchers I listed above.....at least Pollett, Brecheen and Cooper. Thanks for reading along....hopefully this was interesting to at least a few people out there! I had fun doing it. At some point, I may go back and do another version of this type of competition, but do it in the more traditional playoffs format and see what difference that might make. A couple of things for people who may want to try a similar project in the future. First, "partial season stars" are definitely a factor you need to accept in something like this. The Mets probably wouldn't have made it that far with out Gregg Jefferies, who only had 109 AB in real life, and Jeff Innis, who only pitched 19 innings in real life. They were two of the biggest stars on the team. Same with Buck Herzog on the Giants and a few others. Second, when it comes to injuries, that is the toughest call to make....to use or not to use. My main reason for not using them is that it can really punish a team that was healthy in real life. If a given team was great in real life and didn't really suffer any big injuries, then the guys available on a reserve list/minor leagues are going to be very limited. If, in a sim season, that same team suffers multiple major injuries, there just aren't going to be enough players to fill in for them. While both that scenario and a total lack of injuries are unrealistic.....I found for the purpose of what I was trying to do that taking injuries out of the equation was the better choice.....especially when it comes to earlier era teams who may only have a small number of pitchers/players to begin with. OK, enough of that....one more round of applause for the OOTP Greatest Team of All Time- the 1943 St. Louis Cardinals!!
