Looking to improve their play at shortstop, the St. Louis Cardinals made a trade just before Opening Day acquiring infielder Luis Garcia from the Washington Nationals in exchange for left-handed pitcher Steven Matz and minor-league lefty Brycen Mautz.
The Cardinals had hoped either youngster Masyn Winn or veteran Nick Ahmed would step forward during spring training and claim the position, but both struggled to the point neither could be considered an option.
In Garcia, 23, St. Louis gets a versatile infielder who may not be the defender Winn or Ahmed is but seems much better at the plate.
Plus, his ability to play other positions make him an option to remain as a utility player.
Winn will likely be sent to AAA Memphis to improve his play. Ahmed could be given his walking papers.
In 2023, Garcia played in 122 games/112 starts for Washington and hit .266 with nine home runs and 50 RBIs.
He broke into the majors in 2020 with Washington.
Since that time, he has played in 325 games/301 starts and hit .265 with 24 home runs and 133 RBIs.
The Cardinals signed the now 32-year-old Matz to a four-year contract worth $42M before the 2022 season.
Since that time, Matz has struggled with injuries and inconsistency.
In 2023, Matz pitched in 25 games/17 starts and went 4-7 with a 3.86 ERA.
His two seasons in St. Louis saw him post a 9-10 record with a 4.29 ERA in 40 games/27 starts.
A second-round pick in the 2022 draft by St. Louis, the 22-year-old Mautz made his professional debut in 2023 by pitching at Low-A Palm Beach.
He started 23 games going 4-9 with a 3.48 ERA.
