The 1904 World Series: New York Highlanders vs. Pittsburgh Pirates

Results

Game 1, October 13th, 1904, Exposition Park
Road Win Lifts New York to 1-0 Lead in WS
When the games really matter, the New York Highlanders put on their best show, beating the Pittsburgh Pirates by a final score of 7-5 today. Cy Seymour was 3-6 with a triple and a double, while scoring 2 and driving in 3. New York now leads Pittsburgh 1-0 in the best-of-7 affair.
The game was all tied up in the top of the 11th, until Seymour delivered big-time for New York, stroking a dramatic run-scoring single off Ed Killian. The game-changing hit put the Highlanders on top, 6-5.
"Things broke our way today and that's great," Highlanders manager John McGraw said. "It's important, though, to stay focused and not pat yourself on the back too much. We aren't done yet."
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Exposition Park in Pittsburgh.
Highlanders lead 1-0

Game 2, October 14th, 1904, Exposition Park
Pirates Clip Highlanders 5-4 in WS Contest
Behind a bravura effort from starter Deacon Phillippe, the Pittsburgh Pirates topped the New York Highlanders by the score of 5-4 today and got their first win in the 1904 World Series. Phillippe threw 9.0 innings allowing 4 runs for the Pirates. The win moves Pittsburgh into a 1-1 tie with New York.
Pittsburgh grabbed control in the bottom of the seventh. With one out and a runner on 2nd, Harry Lumley delivered a run-scoring single, to make it 4-3 in favor of the Pirates.
Highlanders manager John McGraw did not take questions after the game, telling assembled reporters that he would hold a press conference "if and when we win the World Series."
Game 3 is scheduled for Sunday at Hilltop Park in New York.
Series tied at 1-1

Game 3, October 16th, 1904, Hilltop Park
Highlanders Rally Past Pirates to Claim 2-1 Series Lead
The New York Highlanders nearly wasted a strong game from starter Harry Howell, but were saved by some timely hitting in a 9th inning walk-off win over the Pittsburgh Pirates today.
Howell pitched well in the 4-3 win at Hilltop Park. He threw 9.0 innings allowing 3 runs. The win allowed New York to seize a 2-1 lead in the best-of-7 World Series.
Wilbert Robinson was the walk-off hero for New York. With the game tied in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Highlanders catcher hit a dramatic run-scoring single to send the teams home.
"By the skin of our teeth, man," Howell told the New York Herald. "But hey, it still counts. A few more by the skin of our teeth is fine with me."
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Hilltop Park in New York.
Highlanders lead 2-1

Game 4, October 17th, 1904, Hilltop Park
Almost There: New York On Cusp of World Series Triumph After 3-2 Win
When the stakes were high, Joe McGinnity raised his game to match.
The right-handed McGinnity turned in a stellar performance in Game 4 of the World Series today, pitching a 9-inning, complete-game shutout to lead the New York Highlanders to victory. He allowed 12 hits and struck out 4. The win gave New York a 3-1 lead over the Pittsburgh Pirates in the best-of-7 series.
The Highlanders took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Facing Pittsburgh hurler Jack Chesbro with two outs, McGinnity hit a run-scoring double.
"We're one game closer to our goal," New York manager John McGraw said later. "It isn't any more complicated than that."
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Hilltop Park in New York.
Highlanders lead 3-1

Game 5, October 18th, 1904, Hilltop Park
Pirates Clip Highlanders 2-1 in WS Contest
Deacon Phillippe was not ready to let the World Series end.
With the Pittsburgh Pirates backed into a corner, the right-handed Phillippe held off the New York Highlanders. He threw 9.0 innings of 7-hit ball. The win cuts the series deficit for the Pirates to 3-2 in the best-of-7 series.
Phillippe, who was born in Rural Retreat, Virginia, threw 134 pitches over 9 innings, while allowing 1 run.
"Every team in baseball loses," Highlanders manager John McGraw said. "We're in the playoffs and we still have the same guys that got us here. We'll bounce back."
The next game is set to be played for October 20th, 1904 at Exposition Park in Pittsburgh.
Highlanders lead 3-2

Game 6, October 20th, 1904, Exposition Park
Raucous Exposition Park Crowd Propels Pirates to 3-0 Victory; Series Tied at 3
The Pittsburgh Pirates and the New York Highlanders will take the World Series to a decisive 7th game. Facing a must-win situation today, the Pirates shut out the Highlanders 3-0 at Exposition Park to force the series into what will essentially be a one-game playoff. Pittsburgh left-hander Jesse Tannehill did his part. He threw 9.0 innings of shutout ball.
Tannehill was in the zone all game. He frustrated New York hitters while giving the Pirates 9 innings of quality work. Tannehill threw 111 pitches, allowing 4 hits and getting 6 punchouts.
"Man, Game 7 in the World Series," Tannehill remarked later. "That's about as dramatic as it gets."
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Exposition Park in Pittsburgh.
Series tied 3-3

Game 7, October 21st, 1904, Exposition Park
World Series to Pittsburgh
It was a hard-fought battle for both teams to make it this far. But as the saying goes, "to the victors go the spoils." For the victorious Pittsburgh Pirates, that meant the Major League Baseball World Series trophy.
The Pirates took a 6-0 victory over the New York Highlanders at Exposition Park, winning their 2nd championship after taking the series 4-3.
"We've got grit," said Pirates starting pitcher Deacon Phillippe, who was named MVP of the series. "We know how to win when we have to."
The new titleholders completed the regular season with a first-place finish in the NL and a 100-54 record.
Pirates win World Series 4-3

Series MVP: Pitcher Deacon Clement
