Ruether Blanks Senators To Finalize Series
Unheralded Starter Helps Close Senators In 4-0 Win
[LEFT] Griffith Stadium - To close things out it was actually someone on the mound who impressed for the 27 Yankees as they won their fourth straight game in the series and move on. Dutch Ruether isnt even considered by many the third or fourth best arm on the team but on this afternoon he may as well been Cy Young.
Clearly the Senators were trying to do too much with their backs against the wall in a game they had to have. Ruether walked only one man and allowed only five hits with only one of them being an extrabase hit double in the first inning. Ruether threw only 103 pitches in his full 9 innings of work and seemed to work quickly and efficiently.
Mark Koenig had a nice game for the Yankees at the plate and drove in two runs including a double to open the scoring as well as a solo shot later in the game. Curly Ogden the starter for the Senators was average at best and walked six men 4 and 2/3 innings. The Yankees in the end only had six hits and neither Babe Ruth of Lou Gehrig drove in a run.
The rally for the Senators never came and in the end, after such a good start in game one of this series, went out with barely a whisper. Babe Ruth was everything everyone expected in the series hitting .429 with three home runs and making up for Lou Gehrig who was a non factor and hit only .150.
Ultimately the injury issues of Walter Johnson left the Senators just too much to overcome, that and the fact that the draw of teams gave them likely the favorites to win it all.
This was an easy close out game for the Yankees.

Series Analysis
Hitting - Both teams could run and manufacture runs with the likes of Davey Lopes and Allen Wiggins burning the bases. Neither team really has to power lineup but rather have a chorus of good hitters. Dusty baker hit .320 and Pedro Guerrero was good with men on while the Padres lean on 24 year old Tony Gwyn who hit an eyeopening .351. Steve Garvey is on both these rosters and it would appear the Dodgers have the better and younger version. Similar teams and similar styles but in the end I would have to go with the Dodgers who have the more muscle.
ADVANTAGE: 81 Dodgers
Pitching - Fernandomania was real and explosive for this Dodger team, the Mexican hurler struck out 180 men in a short season and may have had one of the most impressive seasons of the decade. The Padres it would have to say have the better bullpen with Goose Gossage and Dave Dravecky very good late. Erick Show and Ed Whitson lead a staff that is good but not great. Beyond Fernando the Dodgers Jerry Ruess and Burt Hooten have very good ERA's and getting runs off the Dodgers will be a stingy process. Pitching is close between these two teams but the dynamics of Valenzuela give the edge to the Dodgers.
ADVANTAGE: 81 Dodgers
Overall - Both teams have their flaws and in many respects play a similar type game. Both teams tend to come up big in the clutch and had big postseason wins when it mattered most. Talent wise most would have to side with the Dodgers who should be able to really nuetralize a Padres lineup that is less scary beyong Tony Gwyn. Both teams will like to run and it is likely that many of the games will be close. A southern California matchup taht will be full of sun and strategy but most would say the Dodgers are just too much.
PREDICTION: 81 Dodgers in 5
Probable Pitching matchups
Game 1 at Dodger Stadium: Eric Show (15-9, 2.40 ERA) vs Fernando Valenzuela (13-7, 2.48 ERA)
Game 2 at Dodger Stadium: Ed Whitson (14-8, 3.24 ERA) vs Jerry Ruess (10-4, 2.30 ERA)
Game 3 at Jack Murphy Stadium: Bob Welch (9-5, 3.44 ERA) vs Tim Lollar (11-13, 3.91 ERA)

Padres All Over Dodgers In Opener
Eric Show Complete Game Beats Fernando 5-1 For Leg Up
Dodger Stadium - The waether was perfect as it will be throughout this series as the opening game would be sweet to the visiting Padres who take a game lead. The star of the night was starter Eric Show who allowed one run in his nine innings of work striking out three on 123 pitches. Show looked like the young sensation rather then Fernando Valenzuela who was average and not great in his effort to take the loss.
Surprise starter Mario Ramirez at short stop plaid big dividens for manager Dick Williams as the normal reserve slammed a two run home run in the third inning to get the Padres on the board. Exactly one inning later the exact same thing happened but this time it was Carmelo Martinez lit up the night with a two run long drive with a man on for a four run lead. The Padres dugout was load and vocal and knw that there was no better way to start this series.
The game then moved into cruise control with the lead holding steady and both starters doing their part and Fernando settling down. In the 7th Bill Russell came on with two men on but Show got him swinging with a changeup to end what maybe was the Dodger biggest threat. Kevin MCReynolds would hit a sacrafice fly in the 9th and the Padres had a five run lead heading into the 9th.
Dusty Baker would ruin the shutout with a 400 foot solo home run but Show closed the deal and did his job to get San Diego off on the right foot in this series.
Manager Tommy Lasorda put it well in the end, "We put this one behind us and move on. If they pitch that well this entire series, well then we have no chance."

Dodgers Statement Win With Drubbing
LA Bounced Back In A Big Way To Even Series Behind 15 Runs
Dodger Stadium - The Dodgers were quite happy to look up and not see Eric Show on the mound as the second game took shape. Still in the opening inning Jerry Ruess and the Dodgers fell behind when Steve Garvey drove a single following a Tony Gwynn double. The Dodgers however were a different team today and bounced back in their half of the inning and eventually roll over the Padres in an easy 13 run win.
Ed Whitson for San Diego was in trouble from the first pitch he threw in the first inning, his location was off and he was leaving the ball up. Reggie Smith doubled to score two while Rick Monday and Derrel Thomas would also drive in runs in a four run first inning where the Dodgers sent 8 men to the plate.
In the second inning an error by Gary Tempelton set up another big inning for the home team who took advanatge. Ron cey drove in a run and again Derrel Thomas another for a three run inning and a 7-1 advanatge. Dodger starter Jerry Ruess would stay in command and make the lead hold up quite well.
The Dodgers with the game in hand and Ed Whitson out of the game then put together the kind of inning that is meant to send a message. In the 6th inning the Dodgers scored three more before Bill Russell came up with the bases loaded against Greg Booker. Russell drilled one out of spacious Dodger Stadium for a grand slam to make it a 12 run lead on the Padres. Surely the Padres are a vocal team that loves to be heard on the field, and the Dodgers enjoyed their recovery in this game.
Dusty Baker would add another long home run and the Dodgers would end with 15 runs on only 11 hits showing the type of sloppy play the Padres had. Ruess would go the distance and strike out three on 120 pitches for the win.
Now it becomes a best of five series with the action coming to Jack Murphy Stadium. There is a clear feeling that neither of these teams really like eachotyher.

Padres Earn Series Lead In Front Of Full House
Over 50,000 watch Lollar Beat Rival Dodgers
Jack Murphy Stadium - The series thus far coming out of Dodger stadium saw two very different games and the swing of momentum and performance continued at Jack Murphy stadium. Tim Lollar followed the footsteps of Eric Show and had the Dodgers under control from the beginiing while not allowing an earned run to his name. Bob Welch for the Dodgers suffered through five runs in six innings and a late Dodger rally did little more then soften the 9-5 scoreline.
Graig Nettles opened the tally in the first inning with an RBI single scoring Allen Wiggins who had three hits on the night. Tony Gwynn and Kevin McReynolds also added three hits a piece to power the middle of the Padres lineup. McReynolds nailed a two run double in the 4th inning to open up the game to a three run Padres lead.
In the 6th inning Lollar helped his own cause. So often a pitcher throwing a good game finds a way to contribute with the bat as Lollar doubled in a run and leaving the game in the 8th had done a job very well done.
In the 8ththe Padres broke things open even more as four hits including RBI singles from Gwynn and Wiggins took the lead up to eight runs. The Dodgers put a hurting on Goose Gossage in the 9th inning lighting him up for four runs before Sid Monge came on to end the game through a Dusty Baker strike out.
The Padres answer very well to the pressure of playing at home and coming back from such a poor game two. It seems that the San Diego team have the confidence to beat the Dodgers and have seen suprizingly good pitchijg to back them up.
To survive the Dodgers will have to steal one at Jack Murphy.

Fernando Fuerte In Dodger Series Tying Win
Valenzuela Holds Off Padres In 4-1 Win To Knot Series At 2
Jack Murphy Stadium - Even when on the road in a crucial game the Fernando maniacs can be heard far and wide. On this night with his movement at its best and his confidence on track, Fernando Valenzuela was exactly what the 1981 Dodgers needed to even this series with a 4-1 win over the 1984 Padres and Eric Show.
"He makes the ball disappear" says Carmelo Martinez who went hitless on the night. Valenzuela went strong into the 9th inning with a shutout leaving the home team with little to work with. Valenzuela would strike out four in his effort and in typical Fernando fashion, even helped his own cause with a hit and an RBI to brag about.
Eric Show looked just as strong as he did in game one on the mound for the Padres early on. After four innings the only run of the game was courtesy of that Valenzuela hit which was a triple driving in a run. In the 5th it was Ron Cey who ripped a double of the bagey in left field to score Mile Scioscia and give the Dodgers a comfortable two run advantage.
With the Padre fans sitting on their hands trying to find something to cheer about in the late innings, Derrel Thomas hit a solo home run in the 7th to push the lead to three runs for the visiting side where an inning earlier Ken Landreux had an RBI hit. Moving all the way to the ninth the Dodger lead seemed enourmous on this night.
With the pen warming Valenzuela allowed two lead off singled to Tony Gwynn and Steve Garvey to open the ninth that were signs that the Mexican was showing his workload. After a ground out Tim Flannery hit a deep sacrafice fly to plate the first Padre run and at that point with pinch hitter Kurt Bevaqua coming up, Tommy LaSorda made a change.
Tim Niedenfuer threw a total of one pitch and Bevaqua grounded out to short to end the game and even the series at two games each. The Dodgers deserved their win and now have the home field advantage swing in their favor with one more crucial game in San Diego.
Fernando and Show will be waiting in the wings if things come all the way to a game seven.

Jack Murphy Stadium - Somewhere many could expect that a game like this one was coming in this series between two teams that have been teetering back and forth and really have bad blood with one another. All caution was thrown to the wind tonight in San Diego and in the end the Dodgers came up survivors with an 11-10 lead to go back to Los Angeles tired, but one win away from completing their task.
New starters for both teams introduced Burt Hooten and Mark Thurmond to the mound. Neither man had what it would take in this one and the result of the game would come four hours after the first pitch in the California heat.
It was clear with the series tied that both teams did everything they could for this game. The Padres held a one run lead into the 5th inning where the Dodgers finally broke through on a Ken Landreux single and an inning later Mike Scioscia gave the Dodgers a 2-1 lead with an RBI single. In the 7th inniing things quickly changed and the type of game became offensive.
With the one run lead the Dodgers opened things up in the top of the inning when Dusty Baker and Ron Cey drove in runs to increase the Dodger lead to 4-1. The a rare error by Steve Garvey at first base opened the door for two more runs as the Padres bullpen struggled in a 6-1 deficit.
In the bottom of the 7th the Padres rallied and with a run in and Hooten still on the mound, Graig Nettles hit a long fly to right center field that just cleared the wall scoring two runs ahead of him. The blow cut the lead to 6-5 and brought Jack Murphy Stadium to life.
The comeback was complete in the next inning for the flying Padres. Bobby Brown doubled in a run to tie the score and then Gary Templeton gave his team the lead scoring Brown from second with a single. The Padres then looked to Goose Gossage to close out the 9th. Pinch hitter Rick Monday lead off the inning as a pinch hitter for the Dodgers and wouldnt you know it Monday crushed a fastball 430 feet to tie the game straight away. Gossage again looks very weak at the closer role in this series.
The drama was only beginning and in the 11th the Dodgers broke through again as Reggie Smith homered off Luis DeLeon to give the Dodgers a two run lead. The Dodgers added two more runs and had what seemed a comfortable lead of four runs with three outs to go.
Ron Roenicke opened the wild 11th with a solo home run and then a single and double greeted Terry Forster and brought the tying run to the plate. Tony Gwynn hit a sacrafice fly to socre a run and then with two outs Forster mishandled an easy chance for an error to score another run on a play that should have ended this game. Dave Stewart was then called on with two down and the tying run on first base.
Kurt Bevaqua came up to represent the tying run and earned a walk from Stewart. Bobby Brown then was fooled and hit a tapper back to the mound and this time the pitcher made the play to end the game and take hearts out of the fans throughts.
A great game all around between these two teams where both sides fought to the end leaving nothing behind. Now the series goes back Dodger Stadium and the Padres will be forced to win two games on the road.

Manic Monday! Monday! Monday!
Three Home Runs For Rick Monday As Dodgers Move On
Dodger Stadium - In emphatic fashion that obviously came from being back in front of their home fans, the 81 Dodgers emilinated the 84 Dodgers four games to two in a 12-3 convincing win. The story of the day however was the performance of one player, Rick Monday had what could be the performnace of the tournament so far slugging three home runs and reminding many of another three home run performance by another player against the Yankees in the same era, that of Reggie Jackson.
The Padres seemed to be reeling a bit to start this game after the tough loss in game five a few nights ago and although they would take the lead, it was to be a long night for them and start Ed Whitson. The Padres were leading by two runs in the bottom of the second when the Rick Monday show began.
Monday hit a solo home run to right center to cut the lead to one run and soon there after the Dodgers would take off. Dusty Baker tied the score with a home run an inning later when Monday would come up again with a man on in the 4th. Monday hit the ball almost to the exact same spot over the center field wall for his second home run and a breakthrough 4-2 lead. The Dodgers would all two more in the fifth and starter Jerry Ruess did just fine with the lead in hand.
The game was completely wrapped up in the 7th when the Dodgers took a bite out of the Padres bullpen. Ken Landreaux whalloped a three run home run off Sid Monge in a four run inning that made the score 10-2.
In the 8th inning it was time for Rick Monday to make a good night into a great one after Jay Johnstone walked with Greg Booker on the mound. Monday saved his best for last as he took a fast ball deep into right field some 440 feet away for his third home run and his fifth RBI of the night. Monday wasnt suppose to be a major factor in this series or game, but the confidence Tommy LaSorda showed in him paid off in the perfect way.
Fernando wont be needed in a game seven and Jerry Ruess went the distance in one of his most stress free starts imaginable. It was a day for Dodger Blue and Rick Monday and his prodidious power wont be forgotten going forward.
"We were tired of hearing how good they are. It is fun while it lasted," said Monday, "but now it is time to move on"

2003 Chicago Cubs Batting, Pitching, & Fielding Statistics - Baseball-Reference.com
Series Analysis
Hitting - Two good hitting ballclubs but I dont think anyone would really call either one great. The two main sluggers in Sammy Sosa and Mickey Mantle are the focal points but neither had even close to a career season. Neither team really likes to run or has a hitter over the .315 mark in average. The Cubs likley have the deeper bench with Kenny Lofton and Eric Kasrros part of the mix and the young Aramis Ramirez and Corey Patterson could be an ultimate keys. Elston howard is a bat that Stengel will want to keep in the lineup but the Yankees dont really have the classic Yankee lineup that puts the fear in a pitching staff. It is very close but the Cubs just may have a little bit more here.
Advantage: 2003 Chicago Cubs
Pitching - Mark Prior and Kerry Wood are in all their glory and can easily overpower hitters and take over a game as one of the best one two punches of the eara. A young Carlos Zambrano will be a wild card whit Matt Clement and any other starters arnt close to the top two. The Yankees are lead by Whitey Ford and Bob Turley, both known winners and mistake free hurlers. Looking deeper one can say that the Cubs starting pitching is better of the two teams but the issue becomes flipped when looking beyond. The Cubs bullpen is a very big achillies heal to the entire team and and no real middle man or dominant closer exists; Chicago will have issues in the close ones. Big game pitcher Don Larson and closer Ryne Duren put the Yankees over the top in the final call.
Advantage: 58 Yankees
Overall: Everyone knows the story of the 03 Cubs and how they let the big one slip away. In many ways these two teams are opposites in that regard as the Yankees always seem to find a a way to win. Talent wise the Cubs have alot to offer especially against an aging Yankee team, if New York could keep the games close and go at the Cubs pen, they will have success. The spotlight of Mantle vs Sosa will also be quite interesting to see as the tape measures will be out. Expect a close series but in the end one would really have to be brave to go against the winningest group of guys against a team that even has the Gods against them.
Prediction: 58 Yankees in 7
Probable Pitching Matchups
Game 1 at Yankee Stadium: Mark Prior (18-6, 2.43) vs Whitey Ford (14-7, 2.01)
Game 2 at Yankee Stadium: Kerry Wood (14-11, 3.20) vs Bob Turley (21-7, 2.97)
Game 3 at Wrigley Field: Don Larsen (9-6, 3.07) vs Carlos Zambrano (13-11, 3.11)

Cubs Bullpen Bows To Yankee Bats
Six Run 8th Overcomes Sosa Homers For 9-2 Win
Yankee Stadium - Scouting reports often dont lie and the 58 Yankees and Casey Stengel knew that if they could get the game to the Cubs bullpen that they would have a great chance to win. That is exactly how the plan went as Mike Remlinger allowed five runs to cross the plate with the aide of two Cubs errors as the Yankees get the edge in this series wit an opening win.
Mark Prior and Whitey Ford took the mound to start this game with all the poise you would expect from these talented arms. The ball tends to fly out of Yankee Stadium in bunches and Bill Skoworn homered in the 2nd inning off Prior to give the Yanks the lead. Sammy Sosa loves the big stage and was locked in on Ford and in the 4th inning tied the game with a long home run that went over 400 feet to left.
In his next atbat in the 6th Sosa would take one down the line in left to hit another solo shot which gave the Cubs the lead. The Yankees were fortunate enough to make sure that Sosa did his damage with no one on base. Alex Gonzalez would strike out in the same inning with the bases loaded as Chicago missed a big scoring chance.
In the bottom of the 6th with two outs the Yankees had two men on base and Dusty Baker went to Allen Benes out of his bullpen. Gil McDougald ripped a single to center to tie the game and Corey Patterson sailed a throw into the stands to score the go ahead run and give the Yankees the big advantage.
In the 7th the Cubs would again load the bases but this time Eric Karros could not get the job done and struck out against Duke Maas. Still a one run the game going into the 8th the Yankees would end any doubt putting up six runs in the frame. Yogi Berra and Enos Slaughter would each have 2 run hits while Mark Bellhorn would make a big error.
The Yankees wrapped things up more easily then what they would have tought and other then the Sosa tape measure home run, the Yankees were the only thing to really talk about in game one.

Cubs Show Heart To Outlast Yankees
Series Even Behind Wood And Bellhorn Efforts
Yankee Stadium - The Cubs know about their history and the fact that everyone expects them to wilt and fail against an experanced winner. But if Chicago can count on one man in a big game that man would appear to be righty Kerry Wood who leads with his right arm. Wood went seven strong against the Yankees and Bob Turley before the Cubs bullpen did close the door this time to get what they wanted, a split in New York heading back west.
Mark Bellhorn had a nice day at third base as Dusty Baker prefered the switch hitter over Aramis Ramirez against Turley. Bellhorn drove in a run in the first inning to give Chicago the lead. Wood held the Yankees at bay but Turley had a good day as well, striking out Damian Miller with the bases loaded in the 4th.
In the bottom of the 5th the Yankees would finally show up as Tony Kubek tripled to score a run and Yogi Berra singled him home to give the Yankees the lead. In the 6th Bob Grim came into the game for New York and the Cubs tied the game off an Alex Gonzalez sacrafice fly. In the 7th the Cubs would wrestle the lead again as Sammy Sosa doubled, Hee Sop Choi walked, and again Mark Bellhorn came through with an RBI single.
The Cubs were now up two behind Wood who was pulled after seven innings. The Cubs would add a run in the 8th when Yogi Berra made a rare mistake and threw wild to third base as Corey Patterson tried to steal third. The error brought home the fifth Cubs run.
In the 9th, Joe Borowski earned the save to even the series and the Yankees were held to only four hits on the day and very few chances. The series moves to Wrigley Field now with some people wondering how good a chance the 03 Cubs really have in this series.
Steve Bartman isnt expected to attend game three.

A Typical Wrigley Night Leaves Cubs Blue
Yankees Take It In 11 With Dramatic 10-9 Win
Wrigley Field - A hot night where the wind was not even blowing in at Wrigley Field produces another classic. Both teams went on distinct runs in a game that saw the Cubs blow a ninth inning lead and the Yankees take a 2-1 series lead with their win in the 11th. Hee Sop Choi drove in four runs for the Cubs while Moose Skoworn had three with one swing of the bat for the winning side.
Carlos Zambrano and Don Larsen both know somthing about throwing no hitters but neither had to worry about that drama on this night. Yogi Berra gave New York the lead in the 3rd with a two run single to center and off came the punching gloves in this one. The Cubs would load the bases in the 4th and the 5th and come up empty both times, with Choi and Kenny Lofton failing to come through.
Larsen threw the ball very well for five innings in a game that would see 19 different pitchers throw in an over 4 hour marathon. The Yankee lead stayed at two until the 7th when the Cubs but six big runs on the board. Two walks with the bases loaded tied the game until Choi would double off the right field wall to plate two runs and would then be driven in by a Ross Gload single.
The Yankees bounced right back in the 8th inning getting five runs to take a one run lead. The big blow was a three run home run by Moose Skoworn who did it off of Kyle Farnsworth to left center. With two outs in the bottom of the 8th Choi came up again and ripped another double down the first baseline to score two runs and give the Cubs the lead back. So Joe Borowski came on in the 9th to try and give the Cubs the series lead.
With one out Enos Slaughter hit a rising line drive to right field that made it into the basket and tied the game in a dramatic way. Neither team was in any moode to lose this game and the full house at Wrigley knew this was an instant classic.
Everry arm on the rosters were used as the game moved to the 11th inning where with one out the Yankees loaded the bases when Borowski lost much of his control. Bobby Del Greco singled and Harry Simpson forced in runs for the two run advantage. Virgil Trucks then had his own role of trying to end this game.
A walk, a single, and a hit batsman loaded the bases and put the winning run on the bases for the Cubs. Mark Grudzielanek hit a sacrafice fly to center to score a run and move the tying run to 3rd base. Augie Ojeda then looked to make contact but could not and struck out. Dusty Baker then had to go to his bench and use Paul Bako as a pinch hitter with two down. Bako struck out swinging and the Yankees had their game and a deep sigh of relief for Casey Stengel.
The game had it all with truly both teams getting contributions from their entire rosters. The Cubs have proven that they could play with the Yankees or anyteam for that matter, but for the second time this series their bullpen failed to get the job done.
Game four now brings the aces back and Mark Prior tries to beat Whitey Ford to even the series.

With Wind At Their Back, Yanks Almost Through
Slaughter and Skoworn Drive In 7 in 14 Run barrage
Wrigley Field - Everyone knows that the friendly confines of Wrigley field and its conditions can change from day to day. On this day the wind picked up and went from left to right while the rains stayed strong and even delayed this one. The game produced runs, in fact 23 of them, but it was the Yankees who had as expected more of the muscle and find themselves one game away from eliminating the Cubs and moving on.
Likely neither starter wanted to take the mound in these conditions as Mark Prior and Whitey Ford had the odds against them and wouldnt last long. The Cubs put three runs on the board in the bottom of the first with two sacrafice flies and a Sammy Sosa RBI single. The answer didnt take long for the Yankees as Bill Skoworn hit a two run home run in the 2nd.
New York then put five runs on the board and knocked Prior out of the game. Enos Slaughter cleared the bases with a triple while Bill Skoworn also drove in another run. Up 7-3 going into the fourth the Yankees had that look in their eye and Norm Siebern homered off of Kyle Farnsworth with a man on and soon the lead was bloated to 10-3. After the Cubs would score two, Gil McDougald took advantage of the wind for a home run in the 5th.
Moises Alou would actually drive in four runs in the game and his two run home run gave the Cubs some hope cutting the lead to 12-8 in the 6th inning. Chicago would never get back however and the long game would end with the Yankees knocking on the door to ending this series.
"It not just a cliche" added Dusty Baker after the loss, "when their offense gets going it really is tough to stop."
The Yankees have been doing much of their damage without major contributions from star Mickey Mantle. Mantle has yet to go deep or drive in a run in the series.

Cubs Bullpen Pales To Yankee Power
Yankees Sweep All Games At Wrigley For Series Win
Wrigley Field - As expected the winning formula of the Yankees was too much against the hopeful Cubs as the anticipated sereis only lasted five game. The Cubs could not salvage a single game at their home park and watched the Yankees score a bundle of runs again today, against a very depleted bullpen, to end the series with a 14-9 loss. The better and more balanced team surely won in the end, and even with all their questions the older Casey Stengel Yankees look as poised and as strong as ever.
The Yankees did jump up to bite Cubs starter Matt Clement with four runs in the first three innings, Clement would not see the 4th. In the bottom of the 3rd Kenny Lofton hit a suprise two run home run off Johnny Kucks and Mark Bellhorn would drive in another run as Chicago cut the early Yankee lead to 4-3.
It was still a one run game when Alex Gonzalez hit a sacrafice fly in the 6th for the Cubs to tie the game. In the seventh with one out two walks and a double brought up Andy Carey with the bases loaded. Mike Remlinger grooved one into the zone and Carey didnt miss it. A grand slam just over the ivy and the Cubs bullpen again looked lost and exhuasted. Cubs bats just wouldnt quit and would get two back in the bottom of the 7th and in the bottom of the 8th the game would get even tighter.
Jerry Lumpe made a crucial error with two runners in scoring position and the Cubs scored two runs in the inning to make it a 10-9 game as Wrigley Field was alive once again as the Cubs wouldnt quit. Aramis Ramirez came up with a chance to tie but hit into an inning ending double play.
In the 9th the Yankees would put things to bed. Gil McDougald hammered a two run home run and the Yanks would tag on two more in another four run inning. The onslaught was jut too much and Ryne Duren did the honors in the 9th to end the series.
The Cubs were never able to put up the fight they would have hoped even after winning one of the first two of the series. The Yanks do have some concerns especially with the way they pitched the baseball, but no one remembers that as they are now in the last field of 32.

Series Analysis
Hitting - The A's have the edge in almost all offensive catagories except fo base running which the veteran Phillies did well. Reggie Jackson and Mike Schmidt are similar players and will be the fuel of the offenses but Reggie is more the prime time performer. The Phillies have the smarts and are the more patient hitting team with the likes of Tony Perez and Bob Dernier coming off the bench. Overall talent still has to go the the A's who are more balanced and dangerous. The Phillies will need step up performances from Pete Rose and Joe Morgan who hit under .250 combined for the season. Looking beyond the big names, I would give the egde to Oakland.
ADVANTAGE: 73 A's
Pitching - Here things are much less competitive. The Athletics are a much deeper and more dominant pitching staff then the Phillies and this group really gives them an advantage. Steve Carlton is well past his prime years and John Denny will have to continue to produce magic. The Athletics have Vida Blue and Catfish Hunter in their prime and add Ken Holtzman to the mix and you have over 60 wins between them. Rollie Fingers alone makes the A's bullpen better then the Phillies pen that depends on the likes of Al Holland and a compromised Tug McGraw. The A;s are just too much and should be able to handle the Phillies hitters in this series.
ADVANTAGE: 73 A's
Overall - This Phillies team is just an older resurection of the Big Red Machine who knows how to win and play hard, still the talent at this level is not enough. The A's have the arms to control the series and an offense that may not be as high profile, but is very aggressive and competent. The Phillies wont get embarassed but to defeat the A's who had a dynasty going at this time would be too much to ask. In one of the easier predictions to make, look for Oakland to cruise to the third round.
PREDICTION: 73 A's in Six
Probable Pitching Matchups
Game 1 at Oakland Coliseum: Steve Carlton (15-16, 3.11) vs Catfish Hunter (21-5, 3.34)
Game 2 at Oakland Coliseum: John Denny (19-6, 2.37) vs Vida Blue (20-9, 3.28)
Game 3 at Veterans Stadium: Ken Holtzman (21-13, 2.97) vs Charles Hudson (8-8, 3,35)

Since this project is taking alot longer then what I thought and I have another project in regards to the greatest teams, I will not be posting box scores anymore until the much later rounds.
I will run this much faster in respect for time and in each post will display complete series results.

Game 1
At Oakland Coliseum
1983 Phillies..........9
1973 Athletics.......0
WP: Steve Carlton LP: Catfish Hunter
HR: J. Morgan 2
Joe Morgan hits two home runs and Steve Carlton throws a complete game shutout as the Phillies defeat the A's in an easy effort to take the series lead.
Game 2
At Oakland Coliseum
1983 Phillies..............0
1973 A's...................6
WP: Vida Blue LP: John Denny
HR: G. Tenace, M. Hegan, R. Jackson
In a complete turnaround of game one the Athletics shutout out the Phillies behind Vida Blue who had everything working. The Athletics hammer three home runs and the Phillies manage only two hits in the defeat.
Game 3
At Veterans Stadium
1973 Athletics.............6
1983 Phillies................4
WP: Ken Holtzman LP: Tug McGraw S: Rollie Fingers
HR: R. Jackson
Philadelphia had a lead late but a Pat Bourque pinch hit double scored two runs in the seventh inning and Rollie Fingers closed the door as the Athletics took a big away win and series lead. Reggie Jackson scored three runs and hit a long home run but it was Tug Mcgraw who blew the save for the Phils.
Game 4
At Veterans Stadium
1973 Athletics..............4
1983 Phillies.................6
WP: Steve Carlton LP: Catfish Hunter S: Al Holland
HR: B. Dernier, M. Schmidt 2, R. Jackson
Many are starting to believe that the Phillies can take this series as they even things up behind a second win from Steve Carlton. Mike Scmidt hammers two home runs and drives in three runs, the two run home run in the bottom of the 6th gave the Phillies the lead for good.
Game 5
At Veterans Stadium
1973 Athletics.............4
83 Phillies...................3
WP: Blue Moon Odom LP: Marty Bystrom S: Rollie Fingers
HR: J. Morgan
Joe Morgan hit a home run to break a scoreless tie and the Phillies took a 2-0 lead in this game. A three run 7th inning however turned the tide as Bert Campeneris and Mike Hegan drove in runs with hits. The A's show why they are a championship team with this comeback. Rollie Fingers has just been unhittable late in games and did it again in this one for his second save.
Game 6
At Oakland Coliseum
83 Phillies...............4
73 Athletics............2
WP: John Denny LP: Vida Blue S: Al Holland
HR: Mike Schmidt, Tony Perez, Reggie Jackson
Mike Schmidt hit a three run home run off Vida Blue in the very first inning and behind John Denny the Phillies would never look back to tie the series. Denny struck out three and Al Holland lived through some drama late for the Phillies to push the series now to the limit.
Game 7
83 Phillies................0
73 Athletics.............2
WP: Catfish Hunter LP: Steve Carlton S: Rollie Fingers
A wonderful series ends with two ace pitchers giving it their all but Catfish Hunter and later Rollie Fingers again did just enough to beat a very determined 38 year old Steve Carlton. The only runs of the game came when designated hitter Jay Johnstone tripled to right fied to score two runs in the 6th inning. The Phillies in the end were held to three hits and Catfish struck out seven men.
Worthy series performers:
Joe Morgan (.462, 3 HR, 5 RBI)
Mike Scmidt (3 HR, 8 RBI)
Reggie Jackson (.260, 4 HR, 4 RBI)
Rollie Fingers (3 G, 3 S, 0.00 ERA)
Steve Carlton (2-1, 1.44 ERA, 21 K)

The 08 Rays pull the big upset by beating the 79 Pirates in four straight games behind some strong pitching. The Rays had a 1.95 team ERA and Scott Kasmir was especially strong in game three at Tropicana Field. Stars for the Bucs like Dave Parker hit under .200 and the Pirates failed to hit one home run in the entire series.
