August 1930 Report
Major News Walter Johnson Notches Number 500 Saturday, August 23rd, 1930 His goal at twenty was to win twenty games one year, pitch until he was thirty, win the league pennant and to make some money. Well, Walter Johnson did something even better -- the 42-year-old Washington Senators star has now won 500 games in his career. That put him in a very select group of pitchers. He joined that exclusive club today at Griffith Stadium I by whipping the St. Louis Browns 10-5, holding them to 11 hits in 8.1 innings while chalking up 4 strikeouts and 6 walks. In the postgame interview, the modest Johnson said, "It's special to win 500 games. You don't do it by yourself. You do it with good stuff and a good bullpen. You are only as good as the guys behind you. Years from now I might look back on it and give myself a little pat on the back." Since he joined the league, Johnson has collected 500 victories and 355 defeats with a 3.06 ERA. AMERICAN LEAGUE STANDINGS

AMERICAN LEAGUE STANDINGS
NABL News: Draft Pool Revealed Friday, September 12th, 1930 North American BaseBall League divulged the 1930 list of eligible draftees today. It got little play in BNN coverage and why should it? Most players drafted in thirty days won't be on a big league club for years, if at all. Some will languish listlessly at the minor league level. Others will suffer a series of misfortunes, never quite making their mark, but always wowing scouts with their potential. And yet, some lucky team will draw a needle out of a haystack, send him off to the minors and forget about him for a while, only to realize they've got a Hall of Famer on their hands. The top players available (in no particular order) seem to be: 1. Wes Schulmerich, 29 year-old right fielder out of college. 2. Paul Derringer, 23 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 3. Hal Schumacher, 19 year-old starting pitcher out of high-school. 4. Odell Hale, 22 year-old third baseman out of college. 5. Dixie Walker, 19 year-old left fielder out of high-school. 6. Cliff Bolton, 23 year-old catcher out of college. 7. Buzz Arlett, 31 year-old right fielder out of college. 8. Gee Walker, 22 year-old center fielder out of college. 9. Babe Phelps, 22 year-old catcher out of college. 10. Van Mungo, 19 year-old starting pitcher out of high-school.

Sunday, October 5th, 1930 It was Philadelphia and Boston challenging one other in the 1930 North American BaseBall League North American Series this season. On paper, there wasn't much difference between the two strong ballclubs, but on the field, the verdict went to the Athletics. MVP was Dale Alexander (9 for 21, .429, HR, 7 RBIs) It was the 7th for the new league champions. They defeated the Braves 4-1 in the series, winning the last game today by a 7-1 score. Philadelphia Athletics Win 'Fall Classic' and Get Invited to the White House Sunday, October 5th, 1930 Besides winning the big game and all of the accolades that go along with it, the President of the United States has already let the team know that he would like them to visit later this year. When speaking of the call he received from the POTUS, Athletics Manager, Kim, seemed a bit flustered. "He told us that he wants to meet the boys that won the Series and asked if we would come to the White House. I told him, "Hell Yes...er-Yes Sir, Mr President". While the date has not yet been decided, we will be reporting upon the exciting event.

Draft NABL News: First-Year Player Draft Sunday, October 12th, 1930 The North American BaseBall League baseball moguls will be maneuvering, conniving and cajoling today to get the pick of the litter in this year's amateur draft. Awards
Best Defenders Announced by NL Friday, October 17th, 1930 Making the play is the mark of great defenders. Spearing a liner, diving in the hole or crashing headlong into the wall makes no difference to these awe-inspiring fielders. Magicians they sometimes appear to be, showing up out of nowhere to rob a batter of a hit and to turn a hit into an out. Pitchers love 'em and batters curse 'em. These defensive wizards will collect their 1930 National League Glove Wizard Awards tonight: Pitcher: Earl Whitehill (Chicago Cubs) Catcher: Charlie Berry (Chicago Cubs) First Baseman: Andy High (Philadelphia Phillies) Second Baseman: Max Bishop (Cincinnati Reds) Third Baseman: Pinky Whitney (Philadelphia Phillies) Shortstop: Charlie Gelbert (St. Louis Cardinals) Left Fielder: Bruce Campbell (Pittsburgh Pirates) Center Fielder: Johnny Frederick (New York Giants) Right Fielder: Kiki Cuyler (Cincinnati Reds) Top Defensive Players Named by AL Friday, October 17th, 1930 Good glovemen take pride in their defensive skills. They know they make a difference in baseball. Even on days when they don't get a hit, they feel they can make a difference in the field -- and they do. He started 39 games and compiled a 22-15 record with an ERA of 3.45 in 323.2 innings with 159 strikeouts. Great Season For Hubbell, Wins AL Outstanding Pitcher Award Monday, October 20th, 1930 The Outstanding Pitcher Award for 1930 has been presented and the American League winner is Carl Hubbell of Boston. Ruth Wins NL 1930 Outstanding Hitter Award Tuesday, October 21st, 1930 It was a pay-raising season for Brooklyn's right fielder. Regardless of where Babe Ruth signs on next year, this 1930 National League Outstanding Hitter Award will be considered a marquee pickup. He excelled with 203 hits, 33 doubles, 4 triples, 50 home runs and 134 RBIs while compiling a .361 batting average. 1930 Premier Batter Selected By AL Tuesday, October 21st, 1930 It's been a year of triumph for veteran Rogers Hornsby of the St. Louis Browns as he hit his way to the 1930 American League Outstanding Hitter Award. Injury update
This morning I had an appointment with my orthopedic surgeon and my collar bone injury is healing fine. Not fully healed yet. The doctor said I am at what he had expected at 6 weeks. Looking at the X-rays I could see how the breakage had healed thus far. I go back in another 6 weeks. I also start physical therapy next week.
