Young: More than I had
He was the only Braves No. 1 pick who I had no image at all. He was invited to camp subsequently so there are Young photos "out there;" they've just never been exposed to daylight!

Don R. Young
Here is a shot of Don Young with the Greenwood Braves. It is from the Greenwood (SC) Index-Journal of May 7, 1977.
Using newspaper searches of newspapers.com and genealogybank, I could find no evidence that Don Young was in the Atlanta Braves' camp in either 1976 or 1977. He was still in school in the spring of 1975 and was out of pro baseball in 1978. |

2 factors point to the likelihood of Don Young having been in camp with the Braves at some point. 1) He was a first round pick and 2) He was drafted as a catcher. A first round draft pick catcher? I'd say there's a better than 60% chance he made it to camp at some point. No, it does not matter at all that B-R lists him as an outfielder. There are always extra catchers in camp, whether officially on an invite or not (and whether or not they ever see game action). Let's not forget Don Johnson (the one not on Miami Vice). And first round picks almost always end up in camp at some point, even when they are total busts. Following some of the Mets minor leaguers, I have found several who were "out of baseball" in a given year, yet were in camp that very year (although no evidence of such may exist). Teams don't like tossing away first round draft picks without at least one last look. I've also found several (usually pitchers) who appeared to be out of the game at a certain point but were, in fact, injured or recovering from surgery. Sometimes, the only reason a team hangs onto a player in those years is not any desire to see if they can bounce back, but because of their legal obligation to do so (obviously far less of an issue through the 60s). Until the dawn of "The Age of the Rookie" in the late 80s, the newspaper view of such players was "out of sight, why would anyone care, who again?" So a camp appearance in '78 (or even '79) can not be ruled out entirely. None of which is to say that there is an image in the Vault or elsewhere of Mr. Young with the Braves. But it certainly can not be ruled out. There was no Vault image of Greg Harts...until there was. If nothing else, its inconceivable to me that no one would have taken color publicity shots of a first round pick in the 70s. So light a candle, say a prayer, and wish upon a star. Dreams do come true. |

Photo cleanup request
Several new old images that would be knockouts with a little color correction. After the great work here in recent weeks, I wasn't looking for more to do, but found them anyway. High fives and props in advance.
This shot of Jerry Casale (FG943) looks like it was taken at the last total eclipse Mickey Vernon (EH483) made many stops, including Milwaukee in 1959. Don Demeter (hx907) is all over the Vault, but I really like this shot (or think I will). Billy Wilson (GV181) only on one card in old school uni, the Phillies' road uni. Here is home sweet home. Harvey Haddix (HV219) closed out his career as Oriole in 1965. |

Nick Markakis 2,000 career hits - never an all-star
Nick Markakkis, a steady, consistent, if unspectacular hitter, collected his 2,000th major league hit on
August 3, during his 12th major league season. The .288 career hitter is one of the few players of the All-Star Game Era (1933 to present) to reach the 2,000 hits milestone without ever being selected as an all-star. He is also the active player leader in major leagues games played (about 1,790) among players who have never made a major league all-star team. (2016 Topps Heritage- card #250). Don Baylor passes away from multiple myeloma at age 68
"Baylor played for seven first-place teams in his 19 seasons and was a respected clubhouse leader, earning Manager-of-the-Year recognition in his post-playing career. The powerfully built 6-foot-1, 195-pounder hit 338 home runs and drove in 1,276 runs, and clicked on all cylinders when he claimed the AL Most Valuable Player award in 1979. Not only did he lead the California Angels to their first-ever playoff appearance by pacing both leagues in both runs scored and RBIs, he proved unafraid to kick 30 or so reporters out of the clubhouse. After a critical loss in Kansas City late in that season’s pennant race, the press corps made the mistake of asking losing pitcher Chris Knapp about a “choke” within earshot of Baylor, who promptly ordered them to leave". read more herehttp://sabr.org/bioproj/person/dbdccbfa

Dominick Zanni (1932 - 2017)
It appears that Dominick Zanni, a relief pitcher for the Giants, White Sox and Reds in the 50s and 60s, passed away on or about July 6, 2017.
The attached image of a Pinelawn marker was spotted on a sports collector's website by members of a public Yahoo necrology group. It's worth noting that Pinelawn Memorial Park is located near where Mr. Zanni made his home. The autographed White Sox image was part of a recently completed eBay offering from seller sa124691o3. The Reds image was offered by eBay seller postcardsandsnaps back in April 2015. Last edited by FatJack; 08-07-2017 at 06:33 PM. Reason: forgot images |

Washington Senator and Atlanta Brave Paul Casanova passes away RIP
"The Washington Senators (1961-1971) played two games longer than 20-innings, the first on June 12, 1967 (22 innings), the second on June 4, 1971 (21 innings). The catcher behind the plate during both marathon game was none other than Paul Casanova!
Did you know that when Phil Niekro threw a no-hitter on August 5, 1973, against the San Diego Padres, the first for the Braves after moving to Atlanta, the catcher during that historical gem was (once again) Paul Casanova " :Baseball Almanac https://twitter.com/ExamineBaseball/...31275069513729 |

Over 2,000 Phillies Photos
On August 10 Rhys Hoskins (1B/OF) debuted for the Phillies, becoming the 2,028th player in their franchise history. By my count, there are 27 Phillies players of whom no photos exist. The Missing Players list of this website lists 17 missing Phillies players, but they don't count 10 players who there are sketches of, but no photos. On August 1 pitcher, Drew Anderson became the 2,000th Phillies player for whom there are photos of, with Hoskins becoming the 2,001st in that category nine days later.

I'm sorry to hear of Paul Casanova's passing this week at age 75. He was well-known for getting down on one knee at times to give his pitcher an especially low target. He was selected as a third string catcher behind
Bill Freehan and Andy Etchebarren for the 1967 all-star game, but even with that game going 15 innings to break the previous record of 14 innings (1950), Casanova still was not used in the longest all-star game in history. |
