Another no-no in the minor leagues, this time from a guy who sounds more like a '50s gangster than a ballplayer - Bugs Reisigl, for A-Ball Hopkinsville against Elizabeth in the 1BL.

Spare a thought for poor old Jamey Carroll - how relieved must he have been when Bugs issued that free pass so that his two miscues weren't the only things stopping this being a perfect game!

Fantastic team performances like this are but one of a number of reasons why I really fancy our chances this season. After a horror start by John Smoltz - who has been most inconsistent since joining us - that sees us down 0-8 early, our BP quietens their bats and we storm home late for a famous win. No homers, either, just plenty of two-baggers.

I very much like our moxie right now.

Not much to say this time around. We have a great little group here in San Fran all doing what's needed-slash-expected of them and thanks to their concerted efforts look primed for another crack at the playoffs. These past 60 games see us going 37-23.

BATS

Of the many positive aspects of our offence this season, perhaps the most pleasing is how many different ways we have of scoring runs and beating clubs. Yes, Williams is unquestionably our number one guy. But our entire starting lineup and, for the most part, backup players are capable of doing plenty of damage as well. Just look at those bWAR totals.

BALLS

While nowhere near where we want it to be, there's no doubt in my mind our staff is headed in the right direction. Consistency is still our bugbear, the product of a really young bunch.

GLOVES

Swings and roundabouts here, both in our IF and OF numbers. Overall, however, I'm pleasantly surprised and will be even more so if we can cut down on our errors over the remainder.

WINGS

Some thought will be required of us in the offseason, beladen as we are with the lovely dilemma of excess talent, particularly in our OF ranks. That can, of course, change oh so quickly if managed poorly - a trap we are determined to avoid entirely.

Throneberry continues to make the jumps asked of him and will be front and centre in this decision-making process. We picked up a lovely type in Roy Sievers as well, and in the end it is Melki Cabrera perhaps in most danger of being moved on before he starts getting expensive.

POCKETS

Brett Anderson is the only player we are keen to extend that we haven't done so already with, and we expect that to be rectified before the ASB.

Eternally present in my mind is the thought of 1960 and 1961 - at each of which juncture we'll have key players needing to be extended - Teddy and Bags first, then Sheff, Spiderman, Train and LAG a year later. Such is the lot of a club like ours whose purse strings are short and kept tied fairly tight. I am almost resigned to the fact that, at certain points in the future we simply won't have the money for all of them. Which means at certain points ahead of that we'll need to make the tough calls.

But for now, those cloudy days seems far away. Nothing but blue skies do I see.

Another tight LA batting title race in store with three players again involved and currently separated by just one bip - Lou Gehrig and Sam West on 337, Louis Dula on 336.

With most of the attention focused on the ASG, a couple of superb performances in the MiLB ranks almost went unnoticed.

First, AAA Nashville's Trevor May no-hits Newark.

And then, in a first for me, Joe McEwing of AA Aspen has a bang-up game against Ft. Worth, going 7-for-8 in a 13-inning 8-7 win for the Miners.

We can't complain about our luck with injuries these past few seasons, but this one will sting all the same. Spiderman is not only one of our leaders but has been fantastic for us on the field and will be missed. If our luck runs he might just make it back for the playoffs, but it will be very much touch and go.

It opens the door for boom prospect Hurley McNair to finally make his debut in the bigs. Looking forward to see what he's got to offer.

One of the many joys of an RD league is the direct comparison it so often affords across generations. This one will be of particular interest to members of Red Sox Nation. Those two sentences were poetry in motion.

Both Big Papi and Rafa joined the league at the same time, in the inaugural 1947 season, and each is still going strong.

This highlights just how much weight a player's position carries in WAR calculation.

Ortiz: 45 career WAR so far. 267/364/509 slash line with 339 HR and 1170 RBI. ZR of -21.3 at 1B.

Devers: 57 WAR, slash 291/337/516, 331 HR / 1202 RBI. ZR +24.2 at 3B.

I expected a differential in Rafa's favour, but 25% or thereabouts caught me by surprise.

All fairly cut and dried this time around. We miss Cincy's all-time 112-win record by a game but lock down top seed for the playoffs.

What an absolute honour to have been able to witness at close quarters the season Ted Williams has put up, as he takes the LA Triple Crown with a 379 BA, 45 HR (tied with Pete Alonso of Kansas City) and 127 RBI - good for a whopping 11 bWAR. Louis Dula of Mobile repeats as the KA Batting Champ.

We've been utterly spoiled here at San Fran, with Walter Johnson also having a season and a half - finishing with a league-high 27 wins (against just 6 losses) and leading the LA with a 2.55 ERA, although Twins rookie Larry Corcoran has the low marker in this stat with 2.25. Carlos Carrasco of the Pelicans just pips Max Scherzer as the King of K this year with 269.

A few new all-time records set: Teddy's 1.168 OPS (adjusted that is an OPS+ of 226!), Otis Nixon of Salt Lake City with an astonishing 120 stolen bases, and Mike Soroka's 46 saves.

Pat Murray becomes the first AtHoL pitcher to notch 300 career saves, with Charlie Guth reaching the same milestone not long after.

I had to slightly alter things after a couple seasons - the game does NOT handle big swings - say from 1908 to 2008 - in style one season after the other well at all. So I cut the deadball / earlier years out of the mix and now only use from 1961 to 2021, excluding the strike- and COVID-shortened seasons, randomly chosen at the start of each season by a roll of the dice.

That was kind of what I wanted from this save anyway, seeing as I was already covering the early years in the Bucs save (and another now dormant one) with such granularity, so it worked out for the best. Now this league is just fantastic, jam packed with good players performing well, both pitchers and hitters, with the NeL guys in there raw and subject to recalc alongside the MLB ones thanks to the improvements in v23. 36 clubs with 4 levels, players not necessarily being rushed through the minors, some even spending a couple seasons working their way through the system. So far the AI management has been really good in this save, better than ever before - locking down cornerstone players and just moving about the fringy sorts of guys, just as IRL, with very few of those frustratingly dumb roster moves you can get with the AI. Graphics - always a prime factor for me - in this save are my faves of all, paid a fair chunk to get some of them done so I can just sit there and stare at all the pretty logos and unis. Finally, I'm loving the group I've put together at the Seals, will stay there awhile then move somewhere else and keep doing that for the duration.

All in all, it's a good foil for the seriousness with which I attack the Bucs save, not so beholden to the historical because of the cross-generational factor. Thoroughly recommend everyone try an RD save at some point. It's a blast!

After a horror start by John Smoltz - who has been most inconsistent since joining us - that sees us down 0-8 early, our BP quietens their bats and we storm home late for a famous win. No homers, either, just plenty of two-baggers. We have a great little group here in San Fran all doing what's needed-slash-expected of them and thanks to their concerted efforts look primed for another crack at the playoffs. These past 60 games see us going 37-23. BATS Of the many positive aspects of our offence this season, perhaps the most pleasing is how many different ways we have of scoring runs and beating clubs. Yes, Williams is unquestionably our number one guy. But our entire starting lineup and, for the most part, backup players are capable of doing plenty of damage as well. Just look at those bWAR totals. BALLS While nowhere near where we want it to be, there's no doubt in my mind our staff is headed in the right direction. Consistency is still our bugbear, the product of a really young bunch. GLOVES Swings and roundabouts here, both in our IF and OF numbers. Overall, however, I'm pleasantly surprised and will be even more so if we can cut down on our errors over the remainder. WINGS Some thought will be required of us in the offseason, beladen as we are with the lovely dilemma of excess talent, particularly in our OF ranks. That can, of course, change oh so quickly if managed poorly - a trap we are determined to avoid entirely. Throneberry continues to make the jumps asked of him and will be front and centre in this decision-making process. We picked up a lovely type in Roy Sievers as well, and in the end it is Melki Cabrera perhaps in most danger of being moved on before he starts getting expensive. POCKETS Brett Anderson is the only player we are keen to extend that we haven't done so already with, and we expect that to be rectified before the ASB. Eternally present in my mind is the thought of 1960 and 1961 - at each of which juncture we'll have key players needing to be extended - Teddy and Bags first, then Sheff, Spiderman, Train and LAG a year later. Such is the lot of a club like ours whose purse strings are short and kept tied fairly tight. I am almost resigned to the fact that, at certain points in the future we simply won't have the money for all of them. Which means at certain points ahead of that we'll need to make the tough calls. Spiderman is not only one of our leaders but has been fantastic for us on the field and will be missed. If our luck runs he might just make it back for the playoffs, but it will be very much touch and go. It opens the door for boom prospect Hurley McNair to finally make his debut in the bigs. Both Big Papi and Rafa joined the league at the same time, in the inaugural 1947 season, and each is still going strong. This highlights just how much weight a player's position carries in WAR calculation. Ortiz: 45 career WAR so far. 267/364/509 slash line with 339 HR and 1170 RBI. ZR of -21.3 at 1B. Devers: 57 WAR, slash 291/337/516, 331 HR / 1202 RBI. ZR +24.2 at 3B.
