Bill Holbert 1876

Attached are 4 images of Bill Holbert flanking the player located second from left in the middle row in the Allegheny team photo.

The images are dated (l-r) 1879, 1880, 1877, 1881,1882

Billy West 1874

Comparison of the older in life image of Billy West with the player on the left of the top row in the Pittsburgh Allegheny team photo.

Attached are 5 images of Crowley, to my eye the current identification seems to fit in better than the player identified currently as Dolan.

Images are (l-r) undated, 1877, 1878 with Buffalo,1881 and 1883 with Cleveland
I had not seen any other images of Crowley (as the one on Baseball-Reference is the 1878 Buffalo shot), so I had no basis for comparison, but you are correct that those other images look far more like the current 1878 identification than the player identified as Dolan.

But that player identified as Dolan sure doesn't look like the other photos I've seen of him. The hair, the expression, the brow ridge... he just looks much, I don't know, harsher maybe?

Did I mention that normally I'm not very good at the face-matching thing?

Happy Fourth of July!

Thank you for your greetings in respect of the 4th July, possibly tongue-in-cheek.

One striking feature of Dolan's appearance to me is his prominent nose, along with his hairline. Additionally note a comparison of the eyes from the 1878 image to the 1882 image.

Concentrating on this feature I think that Dolan could be correctly identified in the Buffalo image. Attached are 4 images alongside his proposed location in the 1877 Pittsburgh team photo, centre.

Image dates. left to right. 1878, 1882, 1877, 1883, 1884

I tend to agree with UK, especially on Dolan here. Dolan often shaved his head/mustache but his glare and hairline seem to match best with the player in front.

Not tongue-in-cheek. Sorry if it came off that way.

I'm coming around to your perspective, largely because the rest seem even a worse fit. There a couple of players I'm still not sure we agree on, but I'm on-board with Dolan now.

My mother took these pictures at spring training back in March. Does anyone know who this Astros player is?
