1967 Heavyweight and Light Heavyweight Replay

01/11/67 Wednesday
San Francisco, CA, USA
Memphis Al Jones – HW (2-8-2) vs. Jerry Quarry – HW (20-1-3)

Both of these fighters were in my data base. Quarry of course by the game company, Al Jones was the creation of Gunsmoke some time earlier in this heavyweight thread I believe. I've attached files with some bio info added to Quarry including all his fights and Gunsmoke's file included some good bio, I'll just reposted here for the heck of it.

The fight......

Quarry is coming off three consecutive wins over Bill Nielsen, Leslie Borden, and Joey Orbillo after having lost for the first time professionally back in July 1966 in a 10 round decision to veteran Eddie Machen. Jones is in the early stages of a yet not to successful career. He had lost his 5 previous fights to Bill Nielsen, Quarry, Joe Frazier, Orville Qualls and Ron Marsh most recently in November of 66. He went the full distance in a 10 rounder with Quarry back in May 1966 loosing a decision, so that earned him a chance at a rematch here in San Francisco. The scheduled 10 round here on this day in 1967 was not nearly as successful for Jones as Quarry dropped him right at the end of the 5th round and was counted out at 3:08.
I was looking forward to this replay and fighting Quarry for the first time. It was a grand success for Jerry, but, I bit of a disappointment for how short it lasted. Jerry comes out and quickly jolts Jones with an uppercut inside. Both fighters then paw away with little jabs before Quarry then gets a hook into Al’s exposed side. He then traps Al into his corner and connects again with the uppercut. After a volley of punches that miss their mark, Al misses with a jab but then scores with a follow up cross. Quarry counters with his own cross. Jones manages to land an uppercut but there’s not much on it. There’s bit of pause in the action a couple minutes into the round. Both fighters then exchange a few punches each not doing much with them. Then at the 2:31 mark Quarry lands a solid hook and suddenly Jones is in trouble. Quarry then smothers Jones with a barrage of punches and suddenly he’s down! The referee starts his count at the 2:52 mark and he’s counted out! Quarry with a 1st round KO!

1967 Heavyweight and Light Heavyweight Replay

01/11/67 Wednesday
New York, NY, USA
Frank Josephs – LHW (6-4-1) vs. Standford Bulla – LHW (12-17-0)

Frank Josephs - USA Rating 2
Light Heavyweight 1961-67

7 wins / 4 losses / 1 draw / 3 KO

Hometown: Harlem, NY

Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto

Fought twice in 1961 winning a 4 round decision against a Willie Lee(10-22-1,5) and then lost a 4 round decision to Charley Leslie(6-3-0,2). Frank did not fight again then till October 1965. From 65 to 67 he fought Standford Bulla 3 times winning twice, including FranK's last career fight on Jan. 11th 1967. He lost by 4th round TKO to Angel Oquendo(28-19-1,6).

Stanford Bulla - USA Rating 1
Light Heavyweight 1953-1970
14 wins / 27 losses / 0 draw / 5 KO

Hometown: New York, NY

Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto

Bulla fought from 1953 to 1954 compiling a 3-9-0 record then was out of the ring until November 1961 for one fight, a 4th round KO loss to Emile Griffith and then was inactive again until March 1964 from then on fighting on a fairly regular basis through to 1970. The rest of Bulla's career saw him meeting 2 other fighters thus far in the game, all of them in the late stages of his career. He fought Hal Carroll 3 times, loosing all 3 times. He also lost a 4th round KO to Jose Luis Garcia.

Some other noteable record opponents Bulla did fight included a win and loss against WW-Joe Fusco(21-13-1,9) a loss against MW-Ray Drake(21-7-1,4), a loss to MW-Tony Baldoni(22-10-1,11), loss to LHW-Angel Oquendo(28-19-1,6), and a loss to LHW-Eddie Avoth(44-9-0,20).

The fight....
Nothing much exciting or worthwhile to hilite this fight. A couple of New York city club fighters matching up here for this one. For Josephs this fight turned out to be his last. The only thing worth noting I guess with him is he fought Bulla 3 times, loosing the first time but beating him the other two times including this fight in Jan. 1967 in which Josephs scored a 6th round knockout of Bulla. Bulla on the other hand had a fairly active career at least, fighting a couple name boxers. Bulla’s coming off a 4 round decision loss in his last fight in October 1966 against a Roger Russell (12-18-2).
In our replay, a scheduled 6 rounder, Josephs comes out swinging but missing allowing Bulla to win the first round on all three judges cards. The action over the next couple of rounds is rather slow and indecisive with the judges pretty split over who’s controlling the fight. Judge one scores rounds 2 and 3 to Josephs while judge 3 scores the rounds to Bulla. Judge two scores round 2 to Josephs but gives 3 to Bulla. Rounds 4 and 5 though all go to Josephs giving him a slight lead. The 6th round Bulla comes out fast and lands a strong jab but he fails to follow up strong with that. Josephs punches are missing and Bulla had a chance here that he could have maybe pulled this fight out in his favor. Josephs then scores with a hook that stuns Bulla and Josephs continues to press the action then to make some connections late in the round. All three judges end up scoring that round even and ends the fight with Josephs edging out Bulla with a split decision win, 57-58, 58-57, 59-56.

Willis Miles – HW (1-2-1) vs. Roosevelt Eddie Jr. – HW (2-0-0)

Willis Miles - USA Rating 1
Heavyweight 1966-67
1 win / 3 losses / 1 draw / 1 KO

Hometown: Long Island City, NY

Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto

New York club fighter who didn't hang around very long. Fought Roosevelt Eddie Jr. in what was Miles' last fight on Jan. 11th, 1967. Roosevelt KO'd Miles at the 2 minute mark of the 4th round.

Roosevelt Eddie Jr. USA Rating 3
Heavyweight 1966-70
6 wins / 7 losses / 3 draws / 4 KO

Hometown: Harlem, NY

Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto

Never stopped in a fight though he was DQ'd in the 1st round in a fight against Jack Bodell in Feb. 1969 when Bodell was knocked down and Eddie hit Bodell while he was still down and was disqualified.

The first year of Roosevelt's career was against the usual local club fighters until May of 1967 when he went out of New York for the first time to go to Boston and fight Jack O'Halloran. Halloran was 6-0-0 just starting out his career and Roosevelt was 3-1-0 having lost his last fight a 4 round split decision to a Jim Cogdell. Roosevelt and O'Halloran fought a short 4 rounder that ended in a draw called. After that Roosevelt fought 3 more times in 1967 going 1-1-1 against more club fighters in New York and Philadelphia. In Jan 1968 he traveled outside the US for the first time going to Rome, Italy where he took on a guy named Giulio Saraudi(9-1-3,4). Saraudi beat Roosevelt in an 8 round decision. Interestingly it was Saraudi's last career fight.

After that over the next couple of years, Roosevelt suddenly started drawing some bigger name opponents into the ring and doing some world traveling to get these opponents. Two months after his trip to Italy he went down to Florida and fought Florida Al Jones loosing to him in a 10 round decision. He then traveled back across the Atlantic going to Aberavon, Wales, England taking on Billy Gray(19-5-1,9). Roosevelt won by 5th round TKO when, BoxRec says, Gray was defeated sitting on his stool at the end of the 5th. After that Roosevelt went down to Sao Paulo, Brazil and fought a pretty good up and coming South American named Luis Pires in two fights in 1968. Pires defeated Roosevelt in the first fight by a 10th round decision. In the rematch, Roosevelt managed to knock out Pires in the 8th round.

Five months later in Feb. 1969 it was back to Enland for the Bodell fight. Roosevelt then went back to New York and in June 1969 fought James j. Woody for the New York State Heavyweight Title. Woody wins a 10 round decision. Roosevelt fights one more time in his career, in Jan. 1970, this time international again and back in Rome, Italy where he meets Italian great Dante Cane. The fight ends after 8 rounds in a draw.

Despite the mixed results it kind of leaves you wondering why the somewhat sudden end of Roosevelt's career.

The Fight.....
A couple more New York club fighters, one just starting to get his career going the other his very brief career will be coming to an end. Miles was coming off a 4 round decision loss to a James J. Johnson in November. Eddie Jr.’s career was just getting started having won a couple fights in September and October 1966. The fight in 67 lasted until the 2 minute mark of the 4th round as Eddie Jr. scored his 3rd win without defeat on a knockout of Miles. For Miles, it was the end of the road as he hung up the gloves. For Roosevelt he would fight 5 more times in 67 when starting in 1968 and on through 1969 his career would carry him on an interesting journey outside the United States.
Our replay here was one of the more interesting fights thus far in this 1967 replay with the outcome being so similar to the real thing in 67. Round 1 was close with both fighters landing some punches, Miles getting the better of it toward the end of it this observer thought. Interestingly though the two of the game judges scored it 10-9 to Eddie Jr. Round two starts out well again for Miles and a little more then a minute into it you could consider it Miles round again. Then about 1-3/4 minutes in, Eddie Jr. lands a crushing body shot that crumples Miles to the canvas for a short 3 count. Miles gets up but is quickly pinned in a corner. He manages to side step an uppercut and then a big left punch from Eddie Jr. but then he catches another hard body shot and he goes down a second time in the round! Again Miles gets up at the 3 count 15 seconds before the end of the round. Roosevelt can’t finish him off though as Miles tangles Eddie Jr. up in a tight clinch to finish off the 2nd round. All three judges score it 10-7 for Eddie Jr. Round 3 is a close round. A lot of maneuvering and clinching by both fighters and what few punches each manages to land they have little affect on each other. Miles seems to have recovered from the second round but the only way he can win this fight is to knock Eddie Jr. out in the 4th and last round. He’s just too far back in points at this time. Instead of Miles though looking to force the issue in round 4, it’s Eddie Jr. who comes out gunning to finish off his opponent. Eddie Jr. lands a couple solid jabs that leaves Miles bleeding from the lip. He then lands a short uppercut to Miles chin. Miles manages to come back some and split Eddie Jr’s gloves with a solid straight punch. After Eddie Jr. manages to avoid a lead right from Miles, he suddenly counters with a solid punch that puts Miles down on his back!! It’s a 3rd knockdown of Miles in the fight and this time he can’t recover as he’s counted out at the 2:51 mark of the 4th and final round! A KO victory for Roosevelt Eddie Jr.!!

1967 Heavyweight and Light Heavyweight Replay

01/12/67 Thursday
Vienna, Austria
Emil Svaricek – HW (1-0-0) vs. Ermanno Festorazzi – HW (6-2-2)

Emil Svaricek - Austria Rating 1
Heavyweight 1966-70

3 wins / 9 losses / 0 draw / 2 KO

Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto

Austrian heavyweight who fought for a brief period in his native Austria and Germany mostly. Fought once in Italy and in his next to last fight in March 1969 he lost by TKO to Francisco San Jose(14-12-3,10) in Spain. The only other fightsto note with anyone of any experience in the ring were a 2nd round KO loss to Ermanno Festorazzi(9-19-2,7) and Manfred Ackers(8-60-4,1). Both of those guys Emil fought fairly early in their careers.

Ermanno Festorazzi - Italy Rating 1
Heavyweight 1965-73

9 wins / 19 losses / 2 draws / 7 KO

Birthplace: Varenna, Italy

Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto

Ermanno's career started out a respectable 9-6-2. The six losses included KO losses to Billy Gray(19-5-1) who had an intersting career out of England and a 7th round KO loss to Giuseppe Ros. He fought a 6 round draw with Albert Duscha. He also lost by 1st round KO to Hans Jorgen Jacobsen who sported a nice 22-6-1,16KO record. In March 1966 he fought in something called the PHillips Electric Heavyweight Competition fought in WSC, London, England. Festorazzi first defeated a Len Rocky James by 2nd round TKO then he lost that fight to Billy Gray. After defeating a Pietro Stracci for his 9th career win in Sept. 1968 he lost to Giancarlo Bacchini(12-21-6), whom someone has rated for the game. This was the start of an 0-13-0 skid over the last half of his career. He lost fights to Piermario Baruzzi(37-12-0,24KO), Giorgio Bambimi(10-0-0,4), and VAsco Faustino(17-47-6,12)twice in 1969-70. After a loss in November 1970 to a Romano Peviani(7-8-0), Festorazzi then did not fight again until Feb. 1973. He fought 7 times over the course of 1873, loosing all 7 bouts. They included losses to three guys we've seen in the game who were very early in their careers. They were Jean-Pierre Coopman, LHW-Harald Skog and Lorenzo Zanon who was fighting his first professional fight in July 1973 when he climbed into the ring and won a 6 round decision over Festorazzi.

The Fight....
A European HW fight here in Austria between native son Emil Svaricek who is coming off his first career fight back in September of 1966, a 5th round TKO win over a Gustav Adolph who was 1-0-0 at the time, squares off against Italian HW Ermanno Festorazzi who is trying to regroup after a 6 round decision loss to Vittorio Verrengia back in December. Festorazzi’s biggest fight to date in his young career would probably be a 2nd round KO suffered at the hands of Billy Gray in London, England back in early 1966.
The fight in 1967 between these two did not last too long with it ending in a 3rd round KO of Emil giving Festorazzi his 7th win. Our replay here did not last that long. The fight, a scheduled 6 rounder started out very slow, with both fighters dancing around each other for the first minute and a half and neither of them able to connect with any punches for any points scored. Then all of a sudden Ermanno, at the 1:30 mark lands a “violent shot under Svaricek’s ribcage and Emil instantly drops down on both knees!” Emil can’t get back up and is counted out, a KO win for Festorazzi at the 1:41 mark of round one!

Ok, now I want to ask from our viewing audiance something about the ending result of this fight. I've notice through the course of this 67 replay, my Gerhard Zech replay and other random fights I've done, I've seen what seems like an abnormally large number of KO results be from this "violent shot" or "uppercut shot" to the ribcage that drops the opponent on his knees and he doesn't make it up. I was wondering is others of you out there are see this result in your fights maybe more often then what you think should be seen.

Looking for some current heavyweights

Greetings! Just spent 3 hours going through this entire thread and added some very interesting fighters to my database. I just recently purchased TBCB and it is awesome! I used to play the old Avalon Hill board game. I don't feel confident enough in my abilities yet to rate my own fighters. Was hoping someone in this threat had created any of the following:

Malcolm Tann Young up & coming prospect, not sure how many fights you need to accurately rate him at this point. Currently 11-1 (Boxrec 148830).

Willie Chapman Trial Horse who handed Tann his only loss to date. Currently has an 18-19-3 record and holds wins over DaVaryl Williamson, Cliff Couser with losses to Charles Shufford (Twice), Lamon Brewster, Lance Whitaker, Taurus Sykes, Fres Oquendo and Sinan Samil Sam. (Boxrec 007769)

Kali Meehan Scheduled to fight Brewster for the WBO title in Sept. 29-1 with his biggest win coming over Bob Mirovac, also his lone defeat was to Danny Williams. (Boxrec 014560)

Ratko Draskovic Yugoslavian fighter 27-6-2, has no wins of note but has been defeated by Danny Williams, Audley Harrison, Matt Skelton, Sinan Samil Sam and Przemyslaw Saleta. (Boxrec 014620)

Owen Beck Up & coming Don King heavyweight. 23-0 with wins over Taurus Sykes and Craig Tomlinson. (Boxrec 020088)

Thanks for any help!

Malcom Tann Heavyweight

I did Tann a while ago but haven't posted.

Malcolm Tann 11-1 5 KOs
- Hasn't KOed any opponent with a winning record.
- Has been cut and knocked down by very weak competition.
- I'm not too sold on his long term stay.
- The 18-18-3 Willie Chapman gives him fits

Thanks Lee Skye

Thanks for the welcome! I used to love playing the old boardgame and I'm hooked on the computer version. Started to run my sim universe using mostly current heavyweights with a bit of light heavyweight & middleweight action. I've already signed up at Cornerwork and downloaded everything they have there!

Malcolm Tann

Thanks for posting Malcolm Tann. Of all the up & coming heavyweight prospects I think he is the most suspect having lost to a journeyman like Chapman. We'll see when & if he fights some better competition.

I've attached a photo of Tann.

I've only had the game about a month and i'm still coming to terms with it. What I'm trying to do now is create records for current fighters by way of the scheduler but this is taking a while. I don't suppose there is any way of just changing the fighters record on his screen next to his date of birth. This maybe in the wrong thread but I was also going to say that I too would like to create my own fighters in the current heavyweight scene but don't feel confident just yet. I would be interested if anyone would want to create the likes of Chapman and similar opponent types who would probably loose to most fighters in the data base. I'm also interested in other peoples opinions on the updating of prospects abilities. E.G Malik Scott should surely be better now, or will we have to wait for an update.

Have read all of the threads with interest and feel good that there are like minded people out there too.

Ronnie, you can't add opponents names, but you can click on the arrow to the right of "records" in the stats page for each fighter and add or delete wins, losses, etc.

Yeah it takes a while, but I have entered in the exact records from real life for all heavyweights in my game and I'm really enjoying it. It feels more realistic for me, as you have the fighters in their current career stages as they are in real life right now. But you can crown your own champions and make the big fights happen that would be unlikely in real life.

Looking for Ladislao Mijangos Trial Horse from 80-90s

I remember watching Tuesday Night Fights on USA and seeing Ladisalo Mijangos being feed to the likes of Tommy Morrison & a comebacking George Foreman. His career on boxrec lasted from 1981-1996 with a record of 26-19. He held the Mexican Heavyweight Title twice and his biggest win outside of Mexico was a 1987 decision over Leon Spinks. Ladislao was stopped by Foreman in 1988 and followed that up with KO losses to: Tony Tubbs (1989), James Pritchard (1990), Tommy Morrison (1991), Alex Garcia(1991), Gary Winmon (1992), Mike Weaver (1994) and Crawford Grimsley (1995).

If anyone has created him or wants to make the attempt, I'd love to have him in my heavyweight trialhorse database!
Thanks

Mijangos is in my 1980s heavyweight add-ons in the download section at CornerWork.com, along with about 130 others from the era. Check it out. There are also cruisers and light-heavies, and I'm working on super middles now. Enjoy!

Here's my version of Manitoba's Charlie Belanger. Side note. Belanger represented Canada at the 1924 Paris Olympics. As a pro Charlie, the Canadian champ, fought World light heavyweight champion Maxie Rosenbloom twice, losing decisions both times. He fought Larry Gains for the Canadian heavyweight title in '29, and was signed to meet Gains in London for the latter's Empire title, but it fell through. This Belanger has few KOs because most of his fights have been over a short distance. He beat the middleweight Tiger Flowers with a 20-lb weight advantage.
