NABL News: Playoffs begin Tuesday, September 29th, 1931 The regular season has given way to heightened anxiety around the clubhouse as teams with championship aspirations prepare for the final sprint to the finish line. It's time for the great players to step up and earn their fame, for the average players to get a shot at immortality and for rookies to make a name for themselves. Some dread it, some relish it. Everyone who dreams of playing in North American BaseBall League wants to have a once-in-a-lifetime shot at championship glory. The 1931 North American Series kicks off today with these exciting match-ups: Cleveland Indians versus Pittsburgh Pirates. Indians Star Earns AL Bat Title Tuesday, September 29th, 1931 Shanty Hogan was born to be a ballplayer. "Pops always said I learned to swing a bat before I learned to walk." Hogan, the 25-year-old Cleveland catcher, really displayed his hitting ability this past season. His .358 batting average led all American League hitters. He collected 190 hits, socked 13 home runs, scored 80 runs and drove in 92 runs. The AL's top batter also played in 133 games, had 22 doubles, 2 triples and walked 32 times. Chicago Star Is Triple Crown Winner Tuesday, September 29th, 1931 1931 will be forever etched into fans minds as National League star Chuck Klein won the 7th Triple Crown in NABL history. The 26-year-old Chicago right fielder shined all year long, batting .373 with 34 home runs and 131 RBIs, topping the league in all three categories. "I am thankful to have been blessed with the ability to play baseball and it is truly an amazing feeling to have such a season. It will definitely be one of my most memorable accomplishments." said Klein. NABL News: Draft Pool Revealed Saturday, September 12th, 1931 One of the few things certain about the 1931 first-year player draft is that it will be held 30 days from now. Today the NABL announced its list of players filing for the event, though little is publicly known about any given player, sending scouts from each of the league's clubs scattering to uncover what they can in as little time as possible. Some clubs will draft the ideal prospect late, while others will stake their futures to big-name prospects, those deemed most likely to succeed by the fickle, nameless consensus. The top players available (in no particular order) seem to be: 1. Joe Medwick, 19 year-old left fielder out of high-school. 2. Frankie Pytlak, 23 year-old catcher out of college. 3. Debs Garms, 24 year-old center fielder out of college. 4. Len Koenecke, 27 year-old left fielder out of college. 5. Billy Herman, 22 year-old second baseman out of college. 6. Stan Hack, 21 year-old third baseman out of college. 7. Bill Brubaker, 20 year-old third baseman out of college. 8. Tex Carleton, 25 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 9. Johnny Allen, 26 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 10. Frank Demaree, 21 year-old center fielder out of college.

They will be drooling and salivating over the new pups available in the rookie player draft. Philadelphia, St. Louis, Washington, Cincinnati and Boston have plenty to bark and yelp about, since they will have the first five picks. In the opinion of most baseball experts, these are the most highly prized players in the 1931 draft: 1. Len Koenecke, 27 year-old left fielder out of college. 2. Bud Tinning, 25 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 3. Billy Herman, 22 year-old second baseman out of college. 4. Arky Vaughan, 19 year-old shortstop out of high-school. 5. Accomplishments
Wally Berger (CHN) hits 3 HRs on July 30th Bill Dickey (PHA), Ernie Orsatti (PIT), and Urbane Pickering (CLE) each hit for the cycle Chuck Klein (CHN) wins the Triple Crown and has a 29 game hitting streak Rogers Hornsby (SLA) gets 3500th hit Frankie Frisch (DET) gets 2500th hit Lefty Williams (CHN) 250th win Hall of Fame Young Joins Greats in NABL Hall of FameMonday, February 1st, 1932 What a way to cap a glorious career -- get elected to the North American BaseBall League Hall of Fame. That's exactly what happened to pitching star, Cy Young. The Baseball Writers Association rewarded him for his sensational seasons on the mound and today he took his place among the baseball immortals. Young told the audience at the ceremonies, "Baseball has been my life... and what a wonderful life it has been. The truth is I would have played it for almost nothing... but I wouldn't have told any of the owners that." Young had a career won-loss record of 395 victories and 295 losses with 2473 strikeouts in 6105.1 innings and a 2.95 ERA. He was 45, when he retired from baseball and appeared in 792 games. Lajoie Joins HOF ImmortalsMonday, February 1st, 1932 Enshrinement beckoned for Nap Lajoie, as he was inducted into the North American BaseBall League Hall of Fame today. Lajoie, who played many of his 2535 games at second baseman, was an outstanding hitter and batted .343 over his career and swatted 130 home runs. Baseball's newest legend collected 2123 RBIs and scored 2003 runs during his illustrious career. But while he was class act on the field, it was off the field where Nap Lajoie shined the most. He quietly integrated himself in his team's community, selflessly donating his time and money to various causes. The press was largely unaware of his charity and Lajoie never made a fuss about it. "I played a child's game for many years and this game brought me fame and fortune," Lajoie explained during his ceremony. "For some people, it's enough, but my mother raised me to realize that money doesn't make a person great. Being good at a game doesn't make a person great. Helping those in need and giving of yourself selflessly is what makes a person great. And that's what I have tried to be my entire life: great, both on the field and off of the field." 1932 Season Top 100 Prospects List PublishedMonday, April 11th, 1932 The season is about to start, so it's time to publish the annual Top 100 Prospects list. This year 25-year-old starting pitcher Tex Carleton of the Detroit Tigers is the #1 prospect overall. Here is the top 10: 1) SP Tex Carleton, 25, Detroit Tigers 2) SS Arky Vaughan, 20, St. Louis Cardinals 3) SP Bud Tinning, 26, Cincinnati Reds 4) SP Tony Freitas, 23, Washington Senators 5) SP Monte Pearson, 23, New York Yankees 6) C Bill DeLancey, 20, Cincinnati Reds 7) 3B Stan Hack, 22, Boston Red Sox 8) LF Joe Medwick, 20, New York Yankees 9) LF Mike Kreevich, 23, Chicago White Sox 10) SP Bill Swift, 23, Brooklyn Dodgers
NABL News: Opening DayMonday, April 11th, 1932 Infields and outfields are manicured to perfection. The old ball yard has been refurbished, spruced up and freshly painted. Baseball is back in town and it's about darn time! It is Opening Day for the North American BaseBall League. The fans, players and teams are all poised for another great season of baseball. It all gets under way today with this slate of games: Boston Red Sox @ Washington Senators

NABL News: Playoffs begin Monday, September 26th, 1932 A playoff baseball game has a surreal atmosphere. Fans become one, roaring in unison at a great play and sharing the grief at blown opportunity. Victory and defeat play out in a rainbow of colors, sounds, smells and feelings. North American BaseBall League playoff baseball is a memorable experience. What is it like? Ask the 10-year-old sitting with his dad as he plucks a foul ball out of the air. Ask the veteran slugger who hits that walk-off home run. Ask the manager in the big game after coming from 10 games back to win the pennant. Ask the countless number of legends who have flourished or those greats who never won the big one. Or tomorrow, ask any of the rookies what it's like to play in one of the North American Series showdowns: St. Louis Browns versus Boston Braves.
NABL News: Draft Pool Revealed Monday, September 12th, 1932 North American BaseBall League announced the 1932 amateur draft pool today, a scant 30 days in advance of the actual draft. For scouts, it is the toughest challenge of the season, trying to come up with an educated guess as to what a young man in his late teens or early twenties is going to do at the professional level a good five years down the road, at best. Some will go on gut instincts; some will rely on years of experience; but most will find it disconcerting how much their team is beholden to Lady Luck. Choose well and they are geniuses; choose poorly and they are unemployed. The top players available (in no particular order) seem to be: 1. Frankie Hayes, 17 year-old catcher out of high-school. 2. Harry Danning, 21 year-old catcher out of college. 3. Johnny Marcum, 23 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 4. Hal Trosky, 19 year-old first baseman out of high-school. 5. Lonny Frey, 22 year-old shortstop out of college. 6. Dutch Leonard, 23 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 7. Dolph Camilli, 25 year-old first baseman out of college. 8. Bob Johnson, 26 year-old left fielder out of college. 9. Russ Van Atta, 26 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 10. Cecil Travis, 19 year-old third baseman out of high-school.

Hall of Fame Jake Beckley Makes NABL Hall Of Fame Thursday, October 6th, 1932 The way Jake Beckley played baseball made the word "superstar" seem inadequate. He played the game at an even higher level and that's why he is now one of the immortals in the North American BaseBall League Hall of Fame. Beckley played in 2434 games with a .321 lifetime batting average. Among his 3086 hits were 656 doubles, 197 triples and 97 home runs. He also scored 1710 runs and drove in 1772 runs. Beckley was 39, when he retired. Jake hit .315 in 4 post season appearances, including 3 HRs in 1892 while with the series Champs NY Giants. One of his teammates described the talented first baseman this way: "The greatness of Jake Beckley was something that had to be seen... and to see him was to remember him forever." Jake Beckley was inducted into the Hall of Fame today after being elected by the Baseball Writers Association. The new Hall of Famer told the audience, "I just went out and did my job every day... and I guess I must have done it pretty well. Thank you for the honor you have given me today." Draft NABL News: First-Year Player Draft Wednesday, October 12th, 1932 Today is the North American BaseBall League amateur draft. Everyone wants to be drafted first, but the real story lies in the obscure pick several rounds removed from the limelight. These are players in the draft, who might never make the big leagues, but some who could just as easily become Hall of Famers. In any case, the quest to find that hidden nugget begins in earnest today. St. Louis, Cincinnati, Philadelphia, Cleveland and Washington will have the first five selections. BNN analysts have rated these players as likely high draft picks: 1. Ralph Birkofer, 23 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 2. Dolph Camilli, 25 year-old first baseman out of college. 3. Hank Leiber, 21 year-old center fielder out of college. 4. Cecil Travis, 19 year-old third baseman out of high-school. 5. Schoolboy Rowe, 22 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 6. AMERICAN LEAGUE STANDINGS
Williams Sets Down 27 in a Row Thursday, April 27th, 1933 One of the rarest feats in baseball occurred in the North American BaseBall League today. A perfect game! At Ebbets Field Lefty Williams of the Brooklyn Dodgers faced 27 batters and retired every one of them in order in his 4-0 victory. There were no runs, no hits, no errors, no walks and no one got on base as he struck out 2 bewildered Boston Braves in a remarkable pitching performance. "This was one of those games where a good athlete was on top of his game," said his manager afterward. "He had a tremendous rhythm out there. His focus, his concentration, his stuff, everything was as good as it could possibly be." Williams took all the accolades and attention in stride. "A game like this was pretty special. It doesn't come along very often. But winning the game is the main thing." Late in the game, Williams sat by himself at one end of the dugout, staring at the ground with his eyes half-closed. No one would come near him, afraid of jinxing him. It is baseball superstition that no one in the dugout mentions a no-hitter -- much less a perfect game -- until it is completed. When it was over, Williams simply pumped his fist, but his teammates were more excited. This was an historic game for all of them. They mobbed him and the fans gave him a standing ovation for his great game.
