Final AMERICAN LEAGUE STANDINGS
Dean of New York Wins Pitching Triple Crown Monday, October 2nd, 1933 You wouldn't have to be a baseball genius to think Dizzy Dean will win the coveted Outstanding Pitcher Award this year. The New York Yankees ace certainly has the numbers to take it, topping the American League with 25 wins, 2.24 ERA and 185 strikeouts to win the Pitching Triple Crown. "It's a great accomplishment," Dean said told reporters, "but my main goal is to go out there and win every game. The stats are nice, but they don't tell the whole story. The 25 wins are what I'm most proud of." NL Batting Title Belongs to Dickey Monday, October 2nd, 1933 The number-one ranked hitter in the National League for 1933 is Bill Dickey. The Philadelphia Phillies catcher won the league batting crown with 208 hits in 568 at-bats. No one in the league had a higher average. Dickey played in 138 games and finished his standout season with 16 home runs, 80 RBIs and scored 90 times. Cecil Travis's .344 Average Tops in AL Monday, October 2nd, 1933 When it came to batting average, no one hit better than Cecil Travis of the Chicago White Sox this season. The 20-year-old hitting star topped the American League with a .344 batting average, registering 205 hits in 596 at-bats. The talented third baseman hit 4 home runs and drove in 70 runs. Travis played in 146 games and also collected 32 doubles, 8 triples and scored 105 times. NABL News: Playoffs begin Monday, October 2nd, 1933 Playoff baseball generates a reaction in every fan. To the fan of the perennial loser, it's a time to moan again about their team's misfortune. To the fan whose club defines success by the number of North American Series championship trophies lining their clubhouse walls, anything short of the ultimate victory is a disaster. This is playoff baseball. Baseball lovers can't help but be consumed by it in some way or another. There is nothing better than playoff baseball. These North American Series battles will unfold later today: New York Giants versus St. Louis Browns.

Travis Is AL's Premier Rookie Monday, October 23rd, 1933 It wasn't a stroke of good luck that got Chicago's Cecil Travis the 1933 American League Newcomer of the Year Award, it was his skill on the field. His totals also included 4 home runs, 70 RBIs, 105 runs scored, 62 walks and a .404 OPB. NL Names Swift Outstanding Pitcher Award Winner Wednesday, October 25th, 1933 He's in the early phase of his career, but this past season Bill Swift performed like a veteran on the hill for the Brooklyn Dodgers and walked away with the National League Outstanding Pitcher Award in the process. Dean compiled a 25-9 record in 39 starts, tallied 185 strikeouts in 317 innings and recorded a 2.24 ERA. Other clubs managed only a .240 batting average against him. The 26-year-old veteran scorched the opposition with a .333 average, picking up 201 hits, 29 doubles, 8 triples, 41 home runs and 142 RBIs, while scoring 123 runs. AL's Premier Hitter, Ruth of St. Louis Thursday, October 26th, 1933 Babe Ruth has been around North American BaseBall League enough to know a good hot streak when he sees one -- and he got to see one firsthand all year. For his standout run through the 1933 season, he's taking home the Outstanding Hitter Award in the American League. The St. Louis left fielder put up a batting average of .312 with 15 doubles, 6 triples, 42 home runs and 131 RBIs.

Hall of Fame
Lee Among Greats in NABL HOF Tuesday, February 13th, 1934 Today, one of the legendary kings of the hill received his due recognition. Watty Lee was enshrined into the North American BaseBall League Hall of Fame. One of the most fearsome hurlers to ever take the mound, Lee earned this coveted honor by dominating hitters with a 302-208 record over a 573-game career. In 4647.1 innings he fanned 1553 batters, walked 974 and compiled a fine 2.91 ERA. Lee retired at the age of 40. "My teammates did a lot for me over the course of my career and I wouldn't be here without their help," Lee said as he stood before the large crowd of fans and diamond legends. "It's easy to rack up as many wins as I did when your teammates play such great defense and score as many runs as mine did. But in turn, when they weren't having a great day, I knew I had to return the favor and that's why we were all so successful. We played for each other." Delahanty Honored by NABL Hall of Fame Tuesday, February 13th, 1934 On a bright, windy afternoon, Ed Delahanty, the superb left fielder, stood outside the doors to the North American BaseBall League Hall of Fame. He collected his thoughts and tried to contain his emotions before entering the shrine to baseball's greatest players. Delahanty later disclosed some of his thoughts to reporters at the press conference. "To be numbered among these great players," he said, "some of them my idols growing up... that's almost too much to fit my mind around." Nevertheless, this outstanding performer stepped through those doors to claim his place among baseball's immortals. His induction into the Hall of Fame, which took place yesterday, surprised nobody. Ed Delahanty was 40 when he retired from baseball. In 2403 career games he compiled a .321 batting average with 3099 hits, 112 home runs, 1735 RBIs and 1776 runs scored. Accomplishments Hank Greenberg (SLA), Spud Davis (BOS), and Earle Combs (NY) each hit for the cycle. Lefty Williams pitches a perfect game on 4/27 Dizzy Dean (NY) gets the Pitching Triple Crown Babe Ruth hits HR #700 Riggs Stephenson hit #2500 Lefty Williams win #300 Lou Gehrig hit #2000 Herb Pennock and Dazzy Vance each win #250 Bill Dickey and Arky Vaughan each 28 game hitting streak

NABL News: Draft Pool Revealed Wednesday, September 12th, 1934 North American BaseBall League today released the final list of all players eligible for next month's rookie draft. Now that the list has been made official, close scrutiny of these players can be expected as scouts begin to review this year's up and coming talent. The top players available (in no particular order) seem to be: 1. Billy Myers, 24 year-old shortstop out of college. 2. Terry Moore, 22 year-old center fielder out of college. 3. Al Hollingsworth, 26 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 4. Augie Galan, 22 year-old left fielder out of college. 5. Bobby Estalella, 23 year-old third baseman out of college. 6. Fritz Ostermueller, 26 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 7. Beau Bell, 27 year-old right fielder out of college. 8. Harry Gumbert, 24 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 9. Gene Schott, 21 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 10. Zeke Bonura, 25 year-old first baseman out of college. Vaughan Hits .358 to Earn NL Crown Monday, October 1st, 1934 Arky Vaughan will look back at the 1934 season and smile proudly. The St. Louis Cardinals shortstop rapped out 214 hits and put up a .358 average. That was good enough to take this year's batting honors in the National League. The 22-year-old Vaughan ended the regular season with 34 doubles, 12 triples, 25 home runs, while scoring 114 times and driving in 130 runs. Greenberg Captures Triple Crown Monday, October 1st, 1934 Hank Greenberg of St. Louis roared out of the gate and never looked back. The 23-year-old powerhouse slammed 48 home runs, had 155 RBIs and batted a solid .363 on the year to grab the American League Triple Crown, the 8th one in NABL history. "Boy, what a year!" he said. "There are plenty of talented guys down through the years who never won one... and here I am with a Triple Crown!" NABL News: Playoffs begin Monday, October 1st, 1934 The quest for the North American BaseBall League North American Series championship gets underway today. The regular season is now over and the so-called "second season" begins. For fan and player alike this is the sweetest part of the season -- the North American Series. The baseball experts have made their predictions, but teams will do it or die on the diamond. The best team doesn't always win -- sometimes it's the lucky team that is fated to win the crown -- sometimes it's the team that gets hot late in the season that wins -- and sometimes talent wins out and takes the glory. The winner will be one of these teams: Philadelphia Athletics versus Pittsburgh Pirates.

Hall of Fame Hall of Fame Welcomes Blong Tuesday, October 30th, 1934 Earlier this month the selection committee contacted Joe Blong and gave him the news that he had been elected to the North American BaseBall League Hall of Fame. At his induction ceremony, the talented and gifted pitching star addressed the baseball immortals and adoring fans who gathered to honor him. "The feeling I've had since my election is a feeling I suspect will never go away. I'm told it never does. It's the highest high you can imagine. I wish you all could feel what I feel standing here. This is my last big game. This is my last big start. This is my last time get the final out. I dreamed of this as a child but I never really thought it would happen... and now it has." Blong retired from baseball at the age of 34 and left behind an illustrious career. He appeared in 286 games, pitched 1979.2 innings, struck out 665 batters and compiled a fine 1.96 ERA. His career won-lost record was 117-108. Wagner Enshrined in HOF Tuesday, October 30th, 1934 The baseball legends today welcomed to their exclusive club a new shortstop by the name of Honus Wagner. His induction ceremony was held today at the North American BaseBall League Hall of Fame. "I remember thinking to myself after I had had a couple of good years, that if I keep doing this, maybe I just might make it to the Hall of Fame. The dream became a reality today and I must say this is a very proud day today. Over his career Wagner batted .331 and collected 3456 hits, 109 home runs and 1751 RBIs. He played in 2475 games and retired from baseball at age 60. His former manager introduced Wagner saying, "The big thing about Honus is that he could hit any pitch. I don't mean only strikes. He could hit a ball off his ankles or off his ear."
