Let the Showdown of '62 Begin!
How good is this, entering the final series of the regular season, not one division has been clinched.
Making this even more unbelievable is the fact that in two of these races, the teams vying for first face off in the final 3 games. So here's the lay of the land. NORTH DIVISION ![]() The final series sees the Gothams head to Jersey needing just one win to clinch. WEST DIVISION ![]() Portland still have some hope here, hosting the last-placed Rainiers, while the Lizards face the Canaries in LA. But they have little margin of error. EAST DIVISION ![]() With the two teams tied at 84-81, this final series between them in Carolina is a straight up head-to-head battle. SOUTH DIVISION ![]() You'd have to think the Blues, who take on the Pirates in KC, are home here. The Firebirds, who travel to Florida, know they have to win all three to at least have a chance. Bring. It. On.

STALLIONS STAY ALIVE WITH WALKOFF WIN
SUTTON 4-HITTER CLINCHES WEST FOR VEGAS REUSCHEL BREAKS STAGS HEARTS WITH 2-HIT GEM FIRST BLOOD TO TRIPLETS AS MARICHAL SHINES KC TAKES SOUTH WITH SHUTOUT WIN OVER NEW ORLEANS New Jersey 3 v New York 2 An anticlimactic end to a thrilling opening game in this series as a Joe Kelley error in the bottom 9th results in a walkoff win for the Stallions. Gooden and Lolich both go 7 and leave with the game still tied, with the latter allowing just 4 hits and fanning 10. This bridges the Stallions’ deficit to one game. WP: Gerrit Cole (11-8) LP: Doc White (17-13)
Las Vegas 8 v Los Angeles 0 This win, coupled with the Stags’ loss, clinches the West Division for the Lizards. All credit to Don Sutton, who steps up big-time with a 9-strikeout 4-hitter. Dickey and Brouthers lead the Vegas bats. WP: Don Sutton (15-16) 9 IP / 4 H / 0 ER / 9 K. LP: Joe Williams (10-17)
Seattle 1 @ Portland 0 Another season coming so close only to be denied right at the end for the Stags, as Rick Reuschel breaks their hearts with a 2-hit gem and Joe Gordon’s 5th-inning solo shot holds up. Fernando Valenzuela does everything asked of him and then some, allowing just 3 hits and whiffing a franchise-high 15 over the full 9, but the Portland bats let them down at the worst conceivable moment. WP: Rick Reuschel (14-13) 9 IP / 2 H / 0 ER / 6 K. LP: Fernando Valenzuela (15-13) 9 IP / 3 H / 1 ER / 15 K.
Carolina 6 v Indianapolis 1 The Dominican Dandy delivers as required, keeping the Arrows bats quiet in a strong CG win to get the Triplets’ noses in front. The home side takes the lead early and seals the deal with a 4-run 6th. WP: Juan Marichal (17-13) 9 IP / 4 H / 1 ER / 6 K. LP: Bob Shawkey (11-16)
Kansas City 7 v New Orleans 0 The Blues waste no time clinching the South Division with a dominant win behind Bret Saberhagen. Cody Bellinger whacks his 41st homer and drives in 3 for the victors, who will give this a good shake. WP: Bret Saberhagen (19-9) 8.1 IP / 7 H / 0 ER / 8 K. LP: Cy Young (14-8)
Florida 2 v Atlanta 1 It matters not in the end with the Blues winning, but Atlanta’s title run comes to a disappointing end at the hands of Charles Bender and the Firebirds. WP: Charles Bender (15-12) 8 IP / 6 H / 1 ER / 5 K. LP: Lefty Grove (15-10) SV: Fergie Jenkins (1)
DEAD RUBBERS Boston 12 @ Connecticut 3 WP: Bert Blyleven (12-17) 9 IP / 5 H / 2 ER / 6 K. LP: Rube Foster (11-15)
Washington 8 @ Virginia 4 WP: Johan Santana (12-10) LP: Al Spalding (13-16) SV: Catfish Hunter (11)

STALLIONS FORCE DECIDER WITH ANOTHER WIN OVER GOTHAMS
TRIPS PUT ARROWS AWAY WITH 6TH WIN ON THE TROT New Jersey 6 v New York 1 New Jersey keeps the improbable dream alive with a rousing 6-1 win over their archrivals from across the Hudson. Robinson Cano bombs out a 3-run homer and Darrell Porter also goes yard, while Sam McDowell gives them 6 solid innings. Just 3 hits again for the Gothams, who have nothing short of choked here and now the momentum is all with the home side. WP: Sam McDowell (7-2) 6 IP / 3 H / 1 ER / 7 K. LP: Jacob deGrom (15-10) SV: Gerrit Cole (15)
Carolina 5 v Indianapolis 3 The Triplets book their place in the post-season with their 6th straight win. The Arrows push them all the way in this one but in the end John Olerud’s 3-run 2B in the 6th proves the difference. WP: Jack Stivetts (12-12) LP: Bill Donovan (7-12) SV: Sadie McMahon (6)
DEAD RUBBERS Los Angeles 10 @ Las Vegas 4 WP: Noodles Hahn (5-2) LP: Dizzy Trout (3-4)
Seattle 3 @ Portland 2 (14 innings) WP: John Smoltz (4-2) LP: Rube Waddell (8-3)
Kansas City 4 v New Orleans 3 WP: Bob Welch (13-10) LP: Jon Lester (7-3) SV: Dennis Eckersley (42)

COMEBACK / COLLAPSE COMPLETE AS STALLIONS PULL OFF MIRACLE AGAINST GOTHAMS
New Jersey 5 v New York 1 You’d have to think it will take some getting over this ignominious collapse for the Gothams, as the Stallions pull off a miraculous comeback to pinch the North Division title with a 5-1 win that is tighter than it might look. The game remains in the balance until Frank Robinson breaks it open with a 3-run homer off David Wells in the 8th and Jim McCormick’s 28th save of the campaign to cap off Clark Griffith’s fine work will surely be remembered as the sweetest. The NY bats’ insipid effort continues with just 3 hits, giving them a miserable 10 for the series. WP: Clark Griffith (17-11) 7 IP / 3 H / 1 ER / 7 K. LP: David Wells (6-9) SV: Jim McCormick (28)
DEAD RUBBERS Los Angeles 2 @ Las Vegas 1 (10 innings) WP: Zack Greinke (7-8) LP: Bobby Mathews (6-8)

1962 Paragon World Series
Las Vegas Lizards (86-82) v Carolina Triplets (86-82)
Best of nine, Lizards with home-field advantage. Well a mild upset with Carolina getting past the highly-favoured Blues to go one better than last year’s CS loss, but both teams deserve to be here after those epic series. Bonds is obviously the focal point for the Lizards and their chances heavily rest with him. The Triplets have a few options who aren’t quite so dominant, guys like Soto, Davis and Robinson, but they also have the Big Hurt, who after a somewhat disappointing season gets his chance to put all that behind him. I just think that the Triplets are a more-rounded outfit and am tipping them to win in 7 or 8. I'll report on these daily as they unfold. ![]() ![]()
