You woukd have thought that the Giants would lean on their pitching but John McGraw's men hammered 19 hits in the opener to support Christy Mathewson in an eye raising win. Mike Donlin went 4-4 with a home run while Matty struck out five and was good enough to win. The Reds have to pick themsevles up and get someone out.

The crucial game five goes to the Giants who opened up a close ball game with 8 runs in the late innings to go to the brink of advancing. The Giants were up 4-0 going into the 6th inning with Hooks Wiltse on the mound and could smell the win. The Reds wont go easy of course, a big rally with 6 hits put three on the board and then down by two in the eigth faced a similar hole. 2002 Angels..................4
WP: J. Washburn
LP: R. Ortiz
S: T. Percival
HR: R. Sanders, T. Salmon
02 Angels lead series 1-0

Game 2
At Edison International Field

2002 Giants...............3
2002 Angels...............0
WP: J. Schmidt
LP: K. Appier
HR: J. Kent
Series tied at 1

NO HITTER!! NO HITTER!! Jason Schmidt on the biggest stage there is pitches a no hitter and is brilliant against the Angels. He walks only three men and never seemed out of sync striking out seven. Jeff Kent hit a home run and Reggie Sanders scored two runs but it was Schmidt who was the magnificent today. The only no hitter so far in this entire tournament.

Game 3
At Pac Bell Park

2002 Angels.................7
2002 Giants.................3
WP: A. Sele
LP: L. Hernandez
S: T. Percival
HR: S. Spiezio, B. Santiago
02 Angels lead series 2-1

Troy Glaus went 4-4 and Scott Spiezio hit a two run home run as the Angels put the no hitter behind them and took the lead in the series again. Aaron Sele struck out three and went 7 strong in a no nonsense win for the Angels.

At Pac Bell Park

2002 Angels................4
2002 Giants................5
WP: R. Jensen
LP: B. Donnelly
S: R. Nen
HR: G. Anderson
Series tied at 2

Twelve hits are not enough for the Angels who come up short. Down a run in the bottom of the 8th, Tom Goodwin doubled in two runs and the lead would hold for Rob Nen in the 9th. It seems as if these two teams could play eachother 100 times and everygame would be a nailbiter.

Game 5
At Pac Bell Park

2002 Angels..................1
2002 Giants..................0 (10 inn)
WP: T. Percival
LP: R. Nen
HR: None
02 Angels lead series 3-2

John Lackey and Ryan Vogelsong started it, and the bullpen continues an impressive pitchers day. The game was tied at zero before Orlando Palmiero doubled off of Rob Nen in the 10th to drive in a run. Troy Percival closed the door including a game ending strike out of Jeff Kent. Heading home the Angels are one game away.

Game 6
At Edison International Field

2002 Giants...............4
2002 Angels...............9

LP: R. Ortiz
S: B. Donnelly

02 Angels win series 4-2

Three errors for the Giants who dug themselves a hole as Adam Kennedy went 3-5 with two RBI and Orlando Palmiero again drove in two. Jarrod Washburn was just good enough and the Angels get it done at home to move to the quarterfinals.

Behind Bob Johnson the Pirates lead this game 1-0 going into the 9th inning. The Mets had Jim McAndrew do an excellent job to keep the game close but the Mets needed a late run. Jerry Grote tied the game with a base hit and the Mets just wouldnt say die. Great players however are made from great moments and in the bottom of the ninth, Roberto Clemente lead off the inning against McAndrew with a walk off solo home run to tie the series. Gene Clines doubled with two outs in the 9th but Tug McGraw closed the door again and induced a ground out the Manny Sanguillen. The 69 Miracle Mets are in the semi finals.

At Yankee Stadium

1920 Indians..............8
1953 Yankees..............2
WP: Stan Coveleski
LP: Vic Raschi
HR: D. Johnston, E. Smith, L. Gardner
Series tied at 1

The Indians turn the trick back on the Yankees to tie the series as Stan Coveleski pitches very well limiting six hits while striking out six. Larry Gardner hit a three run home run as part of the 14 hit outburst by Cleveland. This Indians team proves its resiliency again and doesnt seem to be playing like an underdog.

WP: Roy Scarborough
LP: George Uhle
S: Bob Kuzava
HR: B. Martin

Little Billy Martin lead off the ninth ining with a solo home run to break a tie game that would hold up. The Indians did have the tying run on third in the bottom of the ninth but Charlie Jamieson grounded into a double play to end the game. The game was back and forth and two Yankee errors really helped the home team but in the end the missed chances by the home team cost them the series lead.

Game 4
At League Park

1953 Yankees................17
1920 Indians.................3
WP: Jim McDonald
LP: Guy Morton
HR: None
53 Yankees lead series 3-1

In a remarkable display, the Yankees hammer the Indians with 24 hits and 17 runs and do it all without hitting a home run but crushing Cleveland at their own game. Phil Rizzuto drove in four and went 4-5 among many other Yankee stars. This game as never close and the confidence between the two team is now opposite. A bad loss at home indeed for the Tribe.

Game 5
At League park

1953 Yankees..............7
1920 Indians..............4
WP: Whitey Ford
LP: Jim Bagby

With Cleveland up 2-1 in the 6th inning behind Jim Bagby, the Indians let it slip away. Four runs in the inning thanks to a bases clearing double by Andy Carey was a back breaker. Two more insurance runs in the 8th from a Yogi Berra single and the Yankee bullpen closed it out. The Yankees played like a dynasty and team that knows it will win against anyone it is matched up against.

Red Ames is the ace at the perfect time for the Giants as he throws eight great innings striking out 7 and allowing six hits.Kevin Appier was almost as good but in the 4th inning Sam Mertes beat out an infield hit to score the only run of the game. The Giants pitching really is what carries this team and heading to Anaheim the edge is all theirs.

06 Cubs win series 4-0

Eight total hits in the game but in the end it was the same old story as the Cubs beat the Mets and sweep them away. Johnny Evers hit an inside the park home run in the third inning in exciting fashion to open the score, while an error set up a second run for the Cubs in the 4th. The Mets would get one back in the 6th but for the final three innings Three Finger Brown faced 9 men and put them all down to close out the Mets and put Frank Chance and his Cubs into the dream Final Series.

SEMIFINAL

1905 New York Giants vs 1953 New York Yankees

Game 1
At Yankee Stadium

1905 Giants.................6
1953 Yankees................11
WP: W. Ford
LP: C. Mathewson
S: J. Sain
HR: None
53 Yankees lead series 1-0

The Yankees hammer Christy Mathewson to set the tone for the series with an opening win. The Big Six allows 8 runs and 11 hits with Whitey Ford himself going 3-3 and driving in four runs. Yogi Berra also had three RBI as the Yanks seemed comfortable and never looked in trouble in this game.

Game 2
At Yankee Stadium

1905 Giants................4
1953 Yankees...............5
WP: T. Gorman
LP: R. Ames
HR: M. Mantle
53 Yankees lead series 2-0

Mike Donlin doubled in two in the first inning and the Giants took an early 4-0 lead at Yankee Stadium. Red Ames settled down and gave his team a chance to come back. Mickey Mantle hit a two run home run and the lead was down to one in the 6th inning. Billy Martin tied the game with a bases loaded sacrafice fly and the home crowd could feel what was next. In the bottom of the 9th two singles set up Mickey Mantle and in order to keep the winning run on third, they pitched to the slugger who singled to right and with the throw off the line the game went to the Yankees. Another emotional win and the Giants need to react quickly in the crucial game three.

Game 3
At The Polo Grounds

1953 Yankees................6
1905 Giants.................2
WP: E. Lopat
LP: D. Taylor
HR: None
53 Yankees lead series 3-0

Smooth Eddie Lopat was the perfect man for a tough game three for the Yankees. Lopat took a shutout to the ninth and did enough to get his team the win. Mickey Mantle tripled in two runs and is having a heck of a series while four runs were scored in the 7th inning to put the game out of reach. The Yankees hit three triples in the spacious Polo Grounds and now the Giants are on the verge of being swept and need an extradornanry effort.

Game 4
At Polo Grounds

1953 Yankees...............3
1905 Giants................1
WP: A. Reynolds
LP: H. Wiltse
HR: None
53 Yankees win series 4-0

Great pitching for the Yankees was the theme for this entire series as they get the sweep. Allie Reynolds let up one run and went the distance for another solid effort. Hank Bauer had a big two out hit in the 7th inning that drove in two and broke a 1-0 game open. The Yankees just dont make mistakes and this team now has the chance to get the ultimate prize.

FINAL SERIES

Cubs Behind Brown Take First Step

Yankee Stadium - Memo to the Yankees: This wont be easy. The 1906 Cubs lead by Frank Chance came into Yankee Stadium and took the opening game of this final series quite easy. Ace starter Three Finger Brown went the distance and allowed no earned runs while striking out six.

Whitey Ford threw the ball well early for the home team and the game moved along quite quickly through the first four innings with rarely even a threat. The Cubs take advantage as all good teams do of mistakes on the field, and the Yankees were about to do just that.

Yogi Berra usually is the most reliable of Yankees but on this day his throwing arm betrayed him. In the 5th and in the 6th the Cubs had runners on second base and used their aggression to try and take third. Both times Berra made a bad throw and the opening runs scored and by the end of the 6th inning the Cubs had opened a three run lead.

The Yankees had their chances as well, Gene Woodling came up with the bases loaded in the 6th but couldnt come through with a hit. The Cubs added on as Frank Chance singled in a run and another Yankee error set up another run as the visitors begane to pull away.

The Yankees have to clean up their game and defense to beat a very smart and opportunistic Cubs team. There is no doubt that the next game is key and the Yankee confidence will be tested behind starter Vic Raschi.

"Its just one game and Brown got the better of us" said Mickey Mantle after the loss. "We are not too worried about our chances."

FINAL SERIES

Tinker And Cubbies Eclipsing Mistakeprone Yanks

Yankee Stadium - The pride of the Yankees has always been the ability to play error free baseball especially when the stage was at its brightest. New York has now made five errors in the first two games of this series and the 1906 Cubs have been more then happy to take advanatage and burst out to a two game series lead.

Joe Tinker was the star of the night for the Cubs as the shortstop displayed some sensational defense helping turn two double plays but did even more with his bat thundering in five RBI on the occasion. Tinker had two run scoring doubles, one in the 5th inning to tie the game and another in the 6th inning with the bases loaded to break the game open. Tinker may not be the nicest guy in the world, but he plays the game as hard or better then almost anyone. The Chicago infield defense kept shining all game for Jack Pfiester who wasnt at his best. Frank Chance made a dazzling 3-6-3 double play with the bases loaded to end an early threat.

Phil Rizzuto had driven in the first two runs of the game and things looked more bright in the 4th inning for New York. The scarppy short stop ended the game with 4 RBI but his teamates failed to do much more. Joe Collins and Vic Raschi made key errors to set up the Cubs scoring chances in this game, and a team like the Cubs dont seem to miss those chances.

Now the series shifts to Old Chicago and many are placing a must win label on the next game for New York. Casey Stengel and his side know the going will be tough as they must win 4 out of the next six games. Eddie Lopat will do his best to play the role of a stopper but most importantly the Yankees need to get back to mistake free baseball. They also failed to hit a single home run in the first two games.

The Cubs are two games away from the greatest prize in sports. Bob Wicker will take the mound in hopes of a win before Three Finger Brown is back for game number four.

Where are the real Yankees?

FINAL SERIES

Cubs 18 Hit Parade Has Them On The Brink
Late Inning Rally Leaves The Yankees Desperate

West Side Grounds - The long journey is almost over and the 1906 Cubs can taste the victory of a champion. In game three of this series the Cubs did it to the Yankees again with a 10-7 and may have broken the backs and the will of the pinstripe dyanasty.

The Cubbies won their third game in a row of the series and had 10,000 of their fans on hand jubilent as well as countless others stalking outside the ballayard. Joe Tinker once again was the star of the day going 4-5 with four RBI. The Cubs shortstop is batting .692 in the series while driving in 10 runs, this to go along with his excellent defense.

The Yankees actually broke this game open in the 3rd and the 4th inning against Chicago starter Bob Wicker. Four singles lead to three runs and later an error by Wicker allowed the visitors to get up to a 5-2 lead. Irv Noren doubled in the 7th and the Yankees had a 7-3 lead looking to fully get back into this series.

The Cubs calmly struk back with vengence. In the bottom of the 7th Harry Dteinfeldt tripled while Johnny Kling then shortly after drove him home. Tinker then would drive in a run and later score as the home side came all the way back and scored four runs to tie the game. With the bases loaded in the 8th the Yankees had no choice but to face Tinker again and his single scored two giving his team the lead. The Cubs scored seven runs in two inning and went into the 9th with a three run advantage.

Ed Ruelbach closed the door working around a Yogi Berra double and Chicago celebrated a win that now has them a game away from a sweep and the ulitmate prize.

"We need to stay composed" said manager Franck Chance, "we havenet won anyting yet but to a man we all believe we will get there."

The Yankees now need a miracle and in a situation where a team is in a 3-0 hole, the first win may very well be the most difficult.

One More Day Of Yankee Pride
Ford Carries Yankees In Tight Win To Extend Series

West Side Ground - When the chips are down and a team has their back against the wall some just roll over while others refuse to die. In New York the Yankees prefer to fight to the death and show the spirit that has made them the winner that they are. Such was the case in Chicago for game four of the series, the Yanks played well and took a tight one beating Three Finger Brown and the Cubs 2-1.

The man of the day was Yankee starter Whitey Ford. Ford is all about winning and taking the ball for the big game. On this day Ford pitched through any and all the pressure and gave his sagging team a pulse again. Ford didnt have dominant stuff but went all 9 inning limiting the Cubs to five hits and one run. Brown for the Cubs was almost just as strong allowing only four hits but what he deserved he did not recieve on this cool afternoon.

A scoreless game entered the 6th inning when Gene Woodling tripled to right center scoring the first run of the game. Hank Bauer then singled in Woodling and the Yankees had all the runs they would need. A Doc Gessler double in the ninth set the Cubs up for their run but Ford was composed and determined to give his team a new day.

There were 9 hits total in the game and not a single error in a well played effort.

"Can the Yankees win three games in a row?" commented Joe Tinker after the loss, "Of course they can, but we are not going to let that happen." New York would love to take the series back to New York with a win in game five.

FINAL SERIES

The Heart Of A Champion Beats Strong For Yanks
A four run 9th inning Extends Dramatic Series Back To NY

West Side Gtounds - When things look the darkest the best find a way to overcome. The New York Yankees won their second straight game of the series after a dramatic 9th inning rally to extend the series. Many are beginning to believe that the destiny of this Yankee team is to turn this series around as they now take things to Yankee Stadium after a 5-3 game five win.

The Cubs behind starter Jack Pfiester believed that this was the day that they would wrap up the series and be crowned the best team ever to play. Pfiester did his job taking the game into the 9th inning and allowing only one run in the process. Pfiester struck out four and only a Joe Collins home run kept him from being spotless. His arm and his concentration would betray him however in the end.

Chicago got over their game 4 loss and put three runs on the board in the first two innings. Frank Schulte, Frank Chance and Johnny Evers all drove in runs but the Cubs in fact left some runs on the board in those first two innings that would come back to haunt them. With a three run lead Yankee starter Vic Raschi settled down and kept his team in the game holding off the Cubs for 8 innings.

Down two runs in the 9th the Cubs were three outs away from glory. AS often happens the Yankees were given a gift when Johnny Evers made an error on a Joe Collins grounder. Gil McDougald then singled and the Yankees began to believe. Clearly rattled Pfiester threw a wild pitch that scored Collins and move the tying run to second.

With runners on the corners Harry Steinfeld made another crucial error to allow the tying run to score on a Gus Triandos grounder. Gene Woodling then faced reliever Orval Overall as a pinch hitter and tripled; just like that the Yankees had the lead.

Johnny Sain did the work to close down the stunned Cubs in the 9th and the series is on its way back to New York with all the momentum on the side of the Yanks. Could it truly be an improbable comeback in the final series that would determine the champion?

"We have a true fight on our hands" said Johnny Kling after the loss, "but we beat ourselves today." The errors in the 9th will truly haunt the Cubs but they still lead in the series and have won in New York before.

The drama in game six should be a thing to behold. The message is to never count out a champion.
