Liverpool Authoritatively Avenge First Game Defeat

The shock of the four runs to three defeat at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur in the first match of the first to four EOI Cup series, occurring in their own ground, barely had time to settle in on Reds as they stormed back the following day to administer a nineteen runs to one whipping of Spurs. There was nothing Reds could not do if they simply wanted to, scoring seven runs in each of two separate innings, and batting out twenty four base hits including four twos, two threes and a home run. Every one of the Liverpool starting IX delivered on attack, and Joshua Reid held Spurs in check yielding only four base hits and four bases on balls which Tottenham could convert into only a single run in the ninth innings, once the game had been out of reach for hours. Second baseman Shorland, seventh in the Reds batting order, had a perfect performance with five base hits in as many tries, scoring three runs of his own in the process. With this match, Liverpool establish a new run scoring mark for a Cup-tie and simultaneously erase the stain of a sixteen runs to two defeat at the hands of Port Vale suffered only September last in that Cup’s round.

BTW, Felton with 21 innings and 327 pitches? Is he going straight to the DL or are stamina settings turned way up?
The oddball thing about that game is that it was his only start of the season. He's a reliever, and the most innings he scored in a game other than this one was four innings and change. And he did not go on injury leave after this that I saw.

Overlong Extra Innings Match Ends in Wild Fashion

West Ham United and Derby County were locked in a long struggle on a cold and damp May afternoon at Derbyshire when the rains came, and only after they had stopped did the floodgates open.

Playing to a four-all draw through the first fourteen innings, right fielder Evans opened the fifteenth for the Hammers with a ground ball out to third base. Then the driving rains came down, forcing cessation of play for the next six and sixty minutes. Upon the teams’ return, Rams Manager Lane decided to go to another pitcher in Mitchell. It was a grave mistake, as Mitchell yielded, in order, a single, another single, a double, a single, a three, an intentional base on balls, a single compounded by an error, a walk, another walk and a single before getting a fly out to stanch the bleeding somewhat. Even the out wasn’t enough to stop the eighth run from scoring on that play, and only after three more had scored on a subsequent walk and a double was Mitchell able to close the wound entirely with a ground out by left fielder Bloggs. When all was said and done—mostly done—eleven tallies had been recorded, and the bats were handed to the Derby County side for their last chances.

With darkness descending on the fraction of the three thousand supporters who’d shown up at the start of the match, Rams went out quietly in their half of the innings and went home fathoming how a match lasting fifteen innings could result in a fifteen runs to four defeat.

Excruciating 22 Innings Match Ends in Exhaustion

Baseball is somewhat akin to association football in its length of play, but also akin to cricket with its absence of a clock to regulate its length of play. Football completes a match in a neat two hour period, and baseball usually does as much. Cricket is by contrast a very long affair lasting several hours over the course of several days, and certain baseball games can seem similarly interminable. Thus a baseball game is an unpredictable thing: you never know, going in, how long you will end up being there. This was certainly the case on the 29th of June at Burton Upon Trent, where before a typically sparse throng of some fifteen hundred patrons, a game between Burton United and Manchester United seemed to be moving quickly along, but then slowed into a morass, appearing almost to stop even while purported to be still in motion.

After a four-all draw had been established upon the close of the sixth innings, the two sides went blank for the ensuing fifteen frames, until visiting United scrapped for two on a single, error, single, walk and single, while home United threatened to extend the game by scoring two of their own in the bottom of the twenty second with a single and double off Willie Felton, who inexplicably was still working after twenty one innings and over three hundred balls pitched. Retired from the match and replaced by MacCrindell, Felton could only watch in agony as his victory dissipated with the subsequent yielding of a double, walk and single resulting in two runs scored to pull Burton level. Manchester brought in their infield along the baselines to get force outs at home plate from the next two batsmen, but with the sun having just set and darkness encroaching quickly, MacCrindell threw four straight wides to batsman Rawlings to force home Exley with the winner. Thus, the perfectly excrecable Burton attack, which placed forty-seven batsmen on base whilst plating only seven of them, conferred upon the home club an exhausting victory, rewarding the fifty or so supporters who doggedly remained to the very end.
Is it me or does it also seem like Manchester United seems to always be involved in those games that seem to stand out as extraordinary from season to season?
