That was neat indeed.

Now sign Bauer! He wants to sign! Just show him the dotted line!

As a Braves fan, I have to stay I really don't like this new Mets front office who practices such things as 'smarts', 'sanity' and 'analytics'

I much prefer the old front office who made decisions based on rolling chicken bones and the phases of the moon.

And even then it better cost nothing!

They, too, might have signed the guy for $750k.

Then grandly announced that he'd be the setup guy. Or fourth starter.

Newsday is saying that the Mets appear to be opting for free agent catcher James McCann over J.T. Realmuto. The thinking is this:

The Mets signing McCann would mean passing on J.T. Realmuto, by far the top backstop available on the open market and arguably the best catcher in baseball.

Realmuto and McCann have been comparable hitters the past two years — since the start of McCann’s breakout in 2019 — but Realmuto comes with a longer track record of success and greater overall ability, particularly defensively. Realmuto is nine months younger than McCann, who is heading into his age-31 season.

McCann, though, presumably would be cheaper and likely would agree to a shorter contract. If they fill their catcher hole with a less-expensive choice, it leaves the Mets more flexibility to go big in other areas of need: centerfield (George Springer is the top free agent) and the rotation (NL Cy Young Award winner Trevor Bauer is the best option available).

Any team that signs McCann to a multiyear contract would be betting that his recent improvements, which have been drastic, are sustainable.

If this is so, then it looks like Cohen money is not inexhaustible and that the Mets must still make good financial decisions even under new management. Which is probably a healthy thing.

The kids on the street say the Mets add James McCann for 4-yr, $40M+.

That's the appetizer, right, Uncle Steve? For when you give us Springer and Bauer, right? Uncle Steve? (tugs on Uncle Steve's sleeve) Uncle Steve, say something, please!

That article says "A four-year deal for McCann would effectively bridge the gap for the Mets between now and when their No. 2 prospect, Francisco Alvarez, is ready" which is a nice thought. Never a guarantee when talking about a 19-year-old in Rookie/A ball but something to hope for.

Mets, Noah Syndergaard reach one-year, $9.7M deal to avoid arbitration

Syndergaard, who underwent Tommy John surgery in March, will make the same salary he would have made in a full 2020 season. Team president Sandy Alderson recently said he hopes Syndergaard will be able to rejoin the rotation in June.

Seems reasonable, given the circumstances. Maybe even a trifle generous.

Looks like the Mets landed Lindor (and Carrasco) from Indians.

https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2021/...edium=facebook

Jeff Passan tweeted this:

So far what we know of the New York-Cleveland blockbuster:

Mets get: SS Francisco Lindor and RHP Carlos Carrasco (as @Feinsand
reported)

Cleveland gets: SS Amed Rosario, IF Andres Gimenez, RHP Josh Wolf, OF Isaiah Greene

As an Indians fan knowing that Lindor and Carrasco were both as good as gone, I am ok with the trade. They got someone that can step in and play SS until Tyler Freeman is ready and Gimenez seems to be a solid prospect who could be the opening day 2b and the other two seem to be high ceiling prospects, and the Indians have done a good job lately with getting prospects right in trades.

I will miss both Lindor and Cookie, they are class guys who should perform well in New York.

I do however, expect Gimenez to turn into a solid everyday player for Cleveland for many yrs.

This is going to cost the Mets $$$.
Quote:
The cost to the Mets in terms of players was not particularly high. Lindor’s presence would have made Gimenez and Rosario expendable, and Wolf and Greene are several years away from the majors and did not rank in the organization’s top tier of prospects.

The cost to the Mets in terms of dollars is higher — especially if they sign Lindor, scheduled to be a free agent after the 2021 season, to a long-term contract. Lindor’s salary for this season has not been determined, but he is likely to earn more than $20 million via arbitration. He had a base salary of $17.5 million in 2020 that was reduced (as all contracts were) by the pandemic-shortened 60-game season.

Carrasco has two years and $24 million left on his deal, plus a $14 million team option for 2023.
This will sound obvious and naive but I don't see this deal happening under the previous regime.

New owner wanted to make a splash, which he did. If they don't resign Lindor to an extension, this will really hurt them but the questions is how much do you commit to Lindor? Is he worth $30+ per year over 7 or 8 years? And then does that contract hurt them when Lindor is 35.

Carrasco is under contract for 3 more years with that last one a team option ($3 million buyout). I think he has at least one more really good year in him and then he will become a back of rotation guy, but both guys are class acts and the fans will love them. I read that both were in tears when they were told about the trade.

And if you read/listen to the local fans here, they are all pissed off. To me this is similar to the 1989 trade of Joe Carter to the Padres, people were really pissed but it brought back Chris James, Carlos Baerga and some 6'5 catcher named Alomar.

The other question is - How does Lindor perform in New York ? Also how does he like New York ?

Then comes the look at money -- $30 million in New York does not go as far as $30 million in Ohio or Florida or Texas .
