SORENSEN GOES 5/5 IN COMPLETE GAME WIN AT STAR ATLANTICS ALL-STAR #1 HAS MEMORABLE AFTERNOON AGAINST BROOKLYN COUNTERPARTS BROOKLYN (June 11, 1873) Atlantic opened their Brooklyn series at Star BBC looking to stay in a tie with Empire for 1st place, and they did just that with a ten-run victory at the York Street Grounds: ![]() In victory, Atlantic was led by one man: their #1, Olaf Sorensen. BATTING: 5/5 (all 1B), 2 R, 4 RBIThe key moment for Sorensen came in the 4th inning, when he came to bat and hit a two-run Single to put a cap on a five-run Atlantic rally that made the score 7-1 and effectively put the game away. From there Sorensen made light work of the Star lineup, not allowing his 2nd & 3rd runs of the afternoon until the bottom of the 9th inning. The performance brought Sorensens pitching record on the season to 10-2 with a microscopic 1.19 ERA through 113 innings of work, and with the bat hes hitting .396 (.804 OPS) to lead all Pitchers in the NBBO. Incredibly, Sorensen isnt the first pitcher this season to go 5/5 in a Complete Game as Port Jersey #2 William Spears pulled off the feat against Tiger Social Club on May 25th. Atlantic is now 14-7, good for a tie with Empire atop the Brooklyn Championship. Star is in 4th place. |

RECORD FOUR MERRIMACK BATSMEN CLUB FIVE HITS EACH BARRETT, PORTER, SCOTT, & ZAHN THE STARS IN DEMOLITION OF SCRANTON SCRANTON, PENN. (June 4, 1873) Merrimack Mills, the preseason Inland Champion favorites, were looking to stay above .500 in their series opener at Scranton. To say they did that would be putting it lightly: ![]() Merrimack started the game with seven runs in the top of the first, and they were ahead 20-0 by the midway point of the game as they laid the lumber to 5-11 Scranton. During the teams 22-run victory, Merrimack completed an organized baseball first as four of their batsmen had five base hits each: MM #1 George Scott (RF): 5/8, 3B, 3 R, 3 RBI, 8 TBIt was Zahn who took home Player of the Game honors in Scranton, as his performance marked the best by an NBBO batsman so far in 1873. Merrimack Mills is now 9-7, normally not a bad place to be but unfortunately Inland leaders Susquehanna have started the 1873 season by going 14-2.

DUNKLE STARS IN MEMORABLE QUEEN VILLAGE WIN 1B GOES 5/6 WITH 6 RBI AS 20 RUNS ARE NEEDED TO BEAT MINERVA PHILADELPHIA (June 18, 1873) – East Philadelphia strugglers Minerva & Queen Village opened their series on Wednesday, and the result was an outstanding game at Fitzwater Field: ![]() This contest was all over the place, and the runs started coming in right away with a 3-2 opening inning. The score 5-3 going into the bottom of the 4th, Queen Village scored eight runs on eight Hits, three Errors, and one Hit by Pitch. Minerva responded by scoring a dozen runs over their next two times to bat to take a 17-11 lead going into the bottom of the 6th. In the bottom of the 6th Queen Village plated six runs to even the score, the key hit being a two-run Single by 1B Joseph Dunkle. Three more runs in the 7th gave Queen Village a 20-17 lead, and the 20th run, scored by Dunkle on a Single by 3B Joseph Barbati, proved to be all-important. Minerva scored twice in the top of the 8th but could score no more, and the hosts exited the game 20-19 winners. Joseph Dunkle, already mentioned twice, was easily the Player of the Game: • B1: 1-run Single to LCF off J. Gray (R)Dunkle’s performance was the best of the season by a batsman in the PCBL. It raised his average from .291 (.626 OPS) to .326 (.703) OPS and his RBI total from thirteen to nineteen through 26 games of the inaugural PCBL season. Both Minerva & Queen Village are 10-16, which leaves them tied for 6th place in East Philadelphia at nine games behind leaders Frankford Arsenal.

VICTORY HAS A FIELD DAY IN 19-RUN EAGLE ROUT BURNETT & LEDOUX STAR AS TEAM HANGS 26 RUNS ON HAPLESS HOSTS ELMIRA, N.Y. (June 18, 1873) Victory BBC is part of the middle of the pack in Upstate New York, but they sure didnt look like it during Wednesdays game at Eagle: ![]() The hosts, who are allowing nearly ten runs per game, got off to a terrible start and never came close to recovering, giving up eighteen runs over the first four innings, exiting the frame behind 18-2, and limping their way to a nineteen-run loss. Nine different Victory batsmen had multiple Hits, Runs, and/or RBI, including a substitute, but they were led by part-time 1B John Burnett & LF Grover LeDoux: VIC #2 J. Burnett (1B): 6/7 (all 1B), 7 R, 1 RBI, 100 GMSCBurnetts seven Runs tied the NBBO record for a nine-inning game, and it was the first seven-run outing since Atlantics Walter Williams on May 25th of 1870. Meanwhile, LeDouxs performance was the best by an NBBO batsman this season, at least when judging by Game Score. Victory is 13-12 and part of a three-way tie for 3rd in Upstate New York, five games behind Frontier. Eagle is firmly in last place at 7-19. |

TWO FIVE-HIT PERFORMERS IN APBL ON TUESDAY EXCELSIOR LF GODIN & GOTHAM RF STRACHAN BOTH BELT FIVE HITS IN WINNING EFFORTS BROOKLYN & NEW YORK CITY (June 24, 1873) – The opening day of Week Eight of the APBL season saw two standout performances by batsmen in the six games that were on offer. The first one occurred in Brooklyn, where Excelsior beat visiting Kings County 9-1 behind 6 Strikeouts by Jim Creighton. As good as Creighton was, Player of the Game honors went to Greenhorn LF Carl Godin: • B2: Leadoff Double to CF off J. DohertyGodin, who had been struggling mightily with a .207 average (.448 OPS) entering last Sunday’s game versus Knickerbocker, is 9/10 over his last two outings, a sure sign that the Greenhorn has finally adapted to APBL-level pitching. Over in New York City, Knickerbocker & Gotham were playing another one of their classic series as the two elder “statesclubs” of baseball, and Gotham leadoff man Clive Strachan was the star in a 13-9 win: • T1: Leadoff Single to CF off W. Marrs (SB, R)Strachan’s afternoon raised his average to .367 (.868 OPS), with 33 Runs Batted In, 36 Stolen Bases, and 2.1 WAR through 43 games in 1873, making a third consecutive APBL All-Star Game appearance very likely. Both Excelsior & Gotham are in the bottom half of the Metropolitan Conference standings. Excelsior is 17-26 and in 5th place, while Gotham is 19-24 and in 4th place. Placing & records might not matter, as it currently looks like nobody will be able to catch the white-hot, 32-11 American BC.

HOYT PLAYS HERO AS N.Y.A.C. WINS AT MUTUAL 4X ALL-STAR COLLECTS 6 HITS & 5 RBI AS SEVENTH-INNING RALLY PROVES PIVOTAL NEW YORK CITY (June 27, 1873) Surging New York Athletic Club took on Mutual at the Union Armory Grounds on Friday afternoon, and the result was N.Y.A.C.s fifth consecutive victory: ![]() The visitors had a relatively easy time of it, as they had an 11-3 lead after seven innings before Mutual mounted rallies that came too late to affect the result. The star of the day was the man who had nearly half of their hits and drove in nearly half of their runs: 4x All-Star OF & 1B James Hoyt. T1: Single to CF off G. LaymanHoyt, now in his fourteenth season in the NBBO, is batting .283 (.672 OPS) with 25 RBI through 33 games for N.Y.A.C., who went alone into 1st place in the New York City Championship with their win at the Union Armory on Friday. The loss brought Mutual down to 14-19, which sees them in 7th place but still only six games behind the new leaders. |

COOK BEFUDDLES BEDFORD; AUTHORS NO-HITTER! ECKFORD #1 COMPLETES 6TH NO-NO IN BASEBALL HISTORY BROOKLYN (June 27, 1873) – Defending cup winners Eckford visited Bedford in a battle of .500 teams on Friday, and the game ended with not only an Eckford win but with history being made in the process: ![]() Eckford won 6-0, with #1 Augustus Cook completing the NBBO’s second No-Hitter in as many seasons. In the end, just two fielding miscues by Eckford of Greenpoint, one by SS Jake Johnson and one by 2B Huibrecht van der Laan, separated Cook from an already historic No-Hitter and what would have been the first Perfect Game in the history of the sport at any level. Cook struck out one Bedford batsman on the afternoon: C Jacob Thompson, who was caught looking at a third strike to end the bottom of the 5th inning. Cook also helped himself with the bat, going 1/4 with a Single & Run in the top of the 4th. Today’s No-Hitter was the sixth in baseball history, all of them occurring in the NBBO: • #1: May 23rd, 1858 by Henry Gibson for Eckford against EmpireToday’s events also made Eckford the first team to throw two No-Hitters and Bedford the first team to be victimized by two. Of course, former Empire & Sons of the Ocean P Harry Nettles is famously the only man to pitch two No-Hitters. Today’s history-making performance marks the end of quite a season and a half for Augustus Cook since joining Eckford. After two years as a relief man for Merrimack, Cook signed for Eckford ahead of the 1872 season and has a record of 27-22 for the team with a 2.52 ERA, but more impressively this is the third time he’s allowed three or fewer hits while earning a Complete Game Win for the team. As things stand, defending Tucker-Wheaton Cup champions Eckford are 5th in Brooklyn at 17-16, but they are only five games behind Brooklyn leaders Atlantic.

JENSEN UP TO OLD TRICKS, BATS 5/5 AT MASS. BAY FIVE-HIT GAME ENDS A .412 JUNE FOR LEGENDARY ST. JOHN’S OUTFIELDER BOSTON (June 30, 1873) – After “struggling” with a 11-12 record over the first four weeks of the APBL season St. John’s caught fire in June, and finished their 18-7 month with some fine work in a five-run victory at Massachusetts Bay: ![]() 2B Theodore Kohlberg and RF Nelson Townsend put in quality performances for St. John’s in the victory: • STJ #2 N. Townsend (RF): 3/6, 2B, 3B, 1 R, 3 RBIHowever, it was 12x All-Star, 3x Batsman of the Year, and 3x Most Valuable Player Konrad Jensen who stole the show: • T1: Leadoff Single past SS off F. Bell (SB, SB, R)The five-hit effort ended a June in which Jensen hit .412 with 23 Runs Batted in and 24 Stolen Bases, a June that will likely earn him Batsman of the Month honors. The only frustrating part of Sunday’s win for St. John’s was that they really should have scored more runs than the thirteen that they put across the plate. Over the course of the contest at Oceanside Park St. John’s batsmen left eight men on base to end innings, so a much larger margin of victory was attainable. For the season, Jensen is batting .374 (.886 OPS) with 65 Runs, 39 Runs Batted In, and 52 Stolen Bases through 48 games. Meanwhile, St. Johns’ 18-7 June has raised their record to 29-19, which has them alone atop the Colonial Conference by three games over Flour City and five games over Niagara.

AMERICAN BASEBALL JUNE RECAP NORTHEAST U.S.A. (July 1, 1873) The calendar has hit the end of June. With the new starting dates of the non-professional competitions in place, that means all leagues are at or just past the halfway mark. Here are how matters stand: APBL STANDINGS (48 of 90 games played) ![]() Niagaras 16-7 May turned into an 8-17 June, and as a result theyve fallen two spots in the Colonial standings. That left an opening for St. Johns and of course the 6x champions of baseball sprinted straight through it, taking over 1st place thanks to an 18-7 month. Flour City remains where they seemingly always are: 2nd place. Alleghany followed up their 8-15 May with a 14-11 June, so they might break into the top three before long. American & Knick were both 16-7 at the end of May. During the month of June Knickerbocker was a respectable 14-11 but American was 20-5, and as a result the defending APBL champions look like the unstoppable half of a two-team race in the Metropolitan Conference. American is scoring 9.7 runs per game nearly a run per game more than any other team and they are allowing 6.3 runs per game nearly a run per game fewer than any other team. If this form continues American could end 1873 as the best single-season team ever, considering the level of competition. APBL MONTHLY AWARDS BATSMAN OF THE MONTH Konrad Jensen (RF, STJ) .412, 1.012 OPS, 35 R, 49 H, 9 XBH, 1 HR, 23 RBI, 24 SB, 10 BB, 2.3 WPA, 1.9 WAR PITCHER OF THE MONTH Elmer Seabold (ALL) 8-4, 1.85 ERA, 27 K, 102.1 IP, 9 CG, 1 SHO, 1.18 WHIP, 2.5 K/BB, 1.3 WAR, 2.6 rWAR GREENHORN OF THE MONTH Martin Prince (SS, AME) .327, .773 OPS, 19 R, 35 H, 7 XBH, 1 HR, 22 RBI, 7 SB, 0 BB, 0.9 WPA, 1.2 WAR Jensen had a classic stretch of Jensen production, and as a result won BotM for the eleventh time between the NBBO & APBL as St. Johns climbed the standings. James Burke, who had 36 Runs, 30 RBI, and 33 Stolen Bases while batting .378 (.912 OPS) for American, will likely feel robbed of the honor. Seabold had by far the best ERA among a group of four eight-win pitchers in June, so PotM is his. He was a major factor in Alleghanys significant improvement during the month, and his work won out over the more support-backed win totals by Americans John Henry and the St. Johns duo of Harper Cundiff & Thomas Smith. GotM was the award where American had a clear winner, as Martin Princes work with both bat and glove proved why he was the highest-rated Greenhorn signing of the winter. As he continues to settle into life as a professional player, Princes glove work should go from outstanding to unparalleled. APBL STATISTICAL LEADERS Average: .382 by James Simon (C, Shamrock) OPS: .886 by Konrad Jensen (RF, St. Johns) Runs: 71 by Franklin Petty (RF, American) Home Runs: 2 by six different batsmen Runs Batted In: 56 by Royal Altman (LF, Gotham) & James Burke (CF, American) Stolen Bases: 53 by James Burke Batsman WPA: 4.03 by Clive Strachan (RF, Gotham) Batsman WAR: 2.4 by James Burke & Konrad Jensen ERA (100+ IP): 2.42 by Elmer Seabold (Susquehanna) Wins: 18 by John Henry (American) Complete Games: 17 by Elmer Seabold Strikeouts: 78 by Jim Creighton (Excelsior) WHIP (100+ IP): 1.25 by Jim Creighton & James Goodman (Flour City) Pitcher WAR: 4.9 by James Goodman Pitcher rWAR: 5.3 by John Henry NBBO REGIONAL LEADERS (35 of 70 games played) BROOKLYN: Atlantic at 23-12 (Empire 2 GB, Continental & Marathon 4 GB, Eckford 5 GB) NEW YORK CITY: New York Athletic Club at 22-13 (Harlem 2 GB, Baltic & Union 3 GB) UPSTATE NY: Frontier & Victory at 22-13 (Minuteman & Utica 2 GB) COASTAL: Trenton United at 25-10 (Quaker St. 1 GB, Maryland 5 GB, Tiger 7 GB) INLAND: Susquehanna at 24-11 (Pioneer 2 GB, Lancastra & Merrimack 6 GB) EW ENGLAND: Oceanic at 22-13 (Portland 1 GB, Green Mtn. 2 GB, S.o.t.O. 4 GB) A 6-15 June has pulled Star down from joint-1st to 7th, with Atlantic taking the reigns in Brooklyn after a 15-6 month. Empire remains steady after a roughly .500 June, while the combination of Continental & Marathon are close behind the top two. Defending NBBO champions Eckford are five games back after improving their May form to 12-9 during the month. Like Star, May NYC leaders Mercury went 6-15 in June and are now in 6th place as a result. N.Y.A.C.s 16-5 June saw them vault five spots up the standings and alone into 1st place, while Harlem remains in 2nd and the Baltic/Union pair ends the month three games back for the second time in a row. Minuteman cooled off in June (9-12), but they are still close behind Upstate joint-leaders Frontier & Victory, the latter of which rose from 6th to a tie for 1st after a 16-5 run. Like Minuteman, Utica is close behind, and 2x defending champions Syracuse are four games back at 18-17. Of note: Frontier has played only 10/35 games at home. The five-way deadlock atop Coastal at the end of May has separated. Unsurprisingly, Quaker St. & Trenton Utd. have surged past the rest of the group, with end of May joint-leaders Maryland & Tiger now in 3rd & 4th place. Newark was a shocking 4-17 in June and have fallen to 7th place. Susquehanna had a decent June (12-9) and thus remains Inland leaders by two games. However, a 17-4 June by Pioneer means the 2x defending Inland champs should have stiff competition during the second half of the season. Lancastra & Merrimack are within arms reach but both have major flaws, Lancastras in attack and Merrimacks in the field. Oceanic remains #1 in New England thanks to the best pitching in the NEL. Portland & Green Mtn. remain close behind and giving steady chase, while Sons of the Ocean recovered from their 5-9 May to go above .500 and move to within four games. Frankford does have one big advantage over the other three in that 25 of their remaining 35 games are at home in Frankford Park. Overbrook was 7-14 in June, Merion went 15-6, and as a result a B.C.C. team is finally at the top of West Philadelphia. Its still baffling that the other two B.C.C. teams Germantown & Philadelphia B.C.C. are in the bottom half of the standings, but at least one of the anticipated powerhouses has found their way to the front of the pack. TWO FIVE-HIT GAMES OPEN THE APBLS WEEK ALL-STARS HUNTLEY & ROPER COME UP BIG AS THEIR TEAMS WIN TO BEGIN JULY SCHEDULE BROOKLYN & BUFFALO, N.Y. (July 1, 1873) Similar to what occurred two weeks ago, the opening day of Week Nine of the APBL schedule saw two players rack up five hits each in winning efforts. The first five-hit performance occurred in Brooklyn, where Knickerbocker was opening their series at Kings County. Knick clobbered Kings Co. 20-5, and the Player of the Game was 14x All-Star and 4x Most Valuable Player Edward Huntley: T1: Leadoff Single past 2B off J. Doherty (R)The 5/6 afternoon raised the legendary infielders average to .316 (.762) OPS with 46 Runs Batted In through 49 games for Knickerbocker so far in 1873, a significant improvement over his career-worst 1872 campaign. Upstate in Buffalo, Niagara used a five-run rally in the 1st inning to beat Massachusetts Bay by the score of 11-7. Their #1 performer by far was 4x All-Star outfielder Reginald Roper: B1: 2-run Single past 2B off T. Hauser (R)The results of Ropers performance left him with a .333 average (.747 OPS) and 46 Runs Batted In through 49 games for Niagara during the first 8+ weeks of the 1873 season. Knickerbocker is 31-18 and continuing to hold on at six games behind the seemingly unstoppable American in the Metropolitan Conference. Meanwhile, Niagaras victory moved them back above .500 at 25-24, and they are five games behind Colonial Conference leaders St. Johns. |

SPORTSMANS HARMON SLAMS SORRY SCRANTON VETERAN 2B HAS 5 HITS, 4 RUNS, & 5 RBI DURING ELEVEN-RUN WIN AT HOME IN FALL RIVER FALL RIVER, MASS. (July 4, 1873) Sportsmans BC won the first two games of their series against Scranton to open the second half of the NBBO season, and Fridays game at Buffington Field was no different: ![]() The Independence Day fireworks began early, with Sportsmans enjoying a 6-3 lead by the end of the 2nd inning, and after a middle-inning lull the home team put the game away with high-powered offense during the latter innings. The #3-8 batsmen in the Sportsmans lineup all had multiple hits, and they were led by fifth-year 2B William Harmon: B1: 1-run Double to LCF off C. Emmert (R)The performance by Harmon was one of the five best by a batsman in the NBBO this season, one that raised his average to a career-high .355 (.825 OPS) with 39 RBI through 38 games. The win moved Sportsmans back to .500 at 19-19, where they are seven games behind Inland leaders Susquehanna. Scranton is in last place at 12-26, the second-worst record in the Northeastern League. |

CREIGHTON HAS CLASSIC OUTING VS GOTHAM STAR PITCHES COMPLETE GAME & ADDS FIVE HITS IN BIG EXCELSIOR VICTORY BROOKLYN (July 5, 1873) Jim Creighton was at his dominant best on Saturday as he and his Excelsior teammates routed visiting Gotham at Carroll Park: ![]() Excelsior sealed the result with a six-run rally in the bottom of the 5th, with the key hit being a 2-run Single by CF Obelix Tsiaris that came after Jim Creighton loaded the bases with an Infield Single. Creighton was the key for Excelsior, as he, like hes done many times before, excelled with both bat and ball: BATTING: 5/5, 2B, 2 R, 1 RBI, 6 TBCreightons Double was a leadoff hit in the bottom of the 2nd, after which Tsiaris drove Creighton in with a Double of his own. With the ball Creighton was never in any trouble, as he allowed single runs in four different innings and at no time appeared as if he was about to become the victim of an extended Gotham rally. Excelsior did have one other notable performance on Saturday, as 1B Tarmo Kuopio was 3/4 with a Double, two Runs, and four Runs Batted In for the victors. The result left both teams still in the bottom half of the Metropolitan Conference standings, with Gotham in 4th place and Excelsior in 5th. Not that either team, nor anyone else in the Metropolitan for that matter, has top spot on their minds, with American now at 40-13 (.755) and looking increasingly unbeatable. |

ORANGE TEAMMATES TAKE TURNS BATTERING K.C. WHITEHEAD BATS 5/7 ON WEDNESDAY; KESSLER BATS 6/6 ON THURSDAY MANHATTAN (July 9-10, 1873) Orange BBC finished off a sweep of APBL-worst Kings County on Thursday afternoon, and in the process ended a series in which some of their batsmen fattened up on the pitching of lowly Kings Co. On Wednesday, Orange led by as many as nine in what ended up a 21-15 victory at the Upper Manhattan Baseball Grounds. Eight Orange players, including both pitchers, had multiple hits. Legendary new Orange batsman Samuel Kessler had four Hits & RBI each, but the player of the game was second-year 2B Charles Whitehead: B1: Reached via Error by CF C. Foster (R)Whiteheads 5/7 performance was one of the top three in the APBL this season when going by Game Score. It raised his average over .300 to .301 (.690 OPS) and he has 37 Runs Batted In through nearly two-thirds of the season, a disappointment considering he hit .343 (.769) as a highly-touted Greenhorn in 1872. Orange came back 24 hours later and won the series finale 17-8, a game in which they led 17-4 before letting Kings Co. score four consolation runs in the top of the 9th. Perhaps buoyed by his four-hit effort the previous day, Kessler went out and one-upped Whiteheads Wednesday output, collecting six hits off Kings Co. pitching: B1: Single to LF off J. Doherty (R)Kesslers 6/6 was not only one hit better than Whiteheads performance the previous day but it was also one place higher on the Game Score list, with Kesslers outing being the 2nd-best by an APBL batsman this season. The two games left Kessler with ten hits over two games (10/12), raising his average to .359 (.821 OPS) with 48 RBI through 57 games, both marks on pace to finish higher than in 1872, his last season playing for Alleghany. The series sweep has Orange (28-29) solidly in 3rd place in the Metropolitan Conference, while Kings County (18-39) has the worst record in the APBL by six games. |

MASS. BAY AT ST. JOHNS FEATURES PAIR OF FIVE-HIT STARS FUSILLI & SKAGGS BOTH COLLECT HANDFUL OF HITS; ST. JOHNS COMES OUT ON TOP PROVIDENCE, R.I. (July 15, 1873) Massachusetts Bay found themselves in Providence to battle St. Johns to open Week Eleven of APBL play, and even though they put up a good fight the venerable hosts pulled away late: ![]() It was an exciting game from the outset, as both teams traded equal amounts of runs over the first two innings before a St. Johns rally made the score 7-4 after three. Mass. Bay would come back over the middle innings, and their run in the top of the 6th made it an 8-7 game in the hosts favor. However, from there St. Johns scored the final four runs of the afternoon to exit 12-7 winners and keep their lead at the top of the Colonial Conference at four games. In victory, St. Johns was led by new 1B Mario Fusilli: B1: Infield Single off T. Hauser (R)The five hits raised Fusillis average to a fine .322 (.776 OPS), with 54 Runs Batted In over the course of 61 games so far during the 1873 season. He is on pace for highs in both marks over his three seasons in the APBL. In a losing effort, Mass. Bay leadoff man Franklin Skaggs also punched out five hits: MB #1 F. Skaggs (RF): 5/5 (all 1B), 3 R, 0 RBIThe performance put Skaggs average back over .300 for the first time in four days a .301 average (.706 OPS) with 46 Runs Batted In through 61 games. The win brought St. Johns record to 37-24, and as mentioned they are currently four games clear atop the Colonial Conference. Mass. Bay is in 5th place, ten games behind St. Johns at 27-34. |

YET ANOTHER 5-HIT MAN IN THE APBL: WILLIAM DICKERSON FIRST-YEAR SHAMROCK 3B GOES ON THE OFFENSIVE AS TEAM REACHES .500 FOR 1ST TIME SINCE MAY ROCHESTER, N.Y. (July 16, 1873) – Shamrock BC reached the .500 mark for the first in exactly two months – they were 6-6 on May 16th – thanks to a resounding eleven-run win at 2nd-place Flour City on Wednesday: ![]() It was an excellent team performance by the visitors, with Shamrock scoring runs in all nine innings, six batsmen collecting multiple hits, and spot starter at P Finley Drew holding Flour City to just five hits while allowing zero Earned Runs. Player of the Game honors went to Shamrock 3B William “Big Bad Bill” Dickerson, who is in his first year with the club after spending five seasons on the senior roster of Quaker State in the NBBO: • T1: Single past 2B off J. York (R)Dickerson, the 1870 Northeastern League Batsman of the Year, hasn’t had much difficulty adjusting to APBL pitching. Through 62 games he’s hitting .332 (.793 OPS) with 25 Extra-base Hits, 64 Runs Batted In, and 28 Stolen Bases while looking like the probable starter at 3B for the Colonial Conference in the upcoming All-Star Game. Not only did the win move Shamrock back up to .500 for the first time in two months, but it also put them in a tie for 3rd place in the Colonial Conference with Niagara. Flour City, as always, is alone in 2nd place. |

LANDRETH RUNS RECORD TO 12-0 VIA SHUTOUT GREENHORN PITCHER CONTINUES TO STYMIE TOP-TIER OPPOSITION MANHATTAN (July 18, 1873) – Knickerbocker is hosting APBL-worst Kings County this weekend, and it figures to be a golden opportunity to the home team to take a series sweep and stay within ten games of American. In the series opener Knick had is easy, as two runs in the bottom of the 1st proved to be enough for the win as Greenhorn P Bert Landreth pitched a Shutout in a 5-0 Knickerbocker victory. Landreth held Kings Co. to five hits on the afternoon, and while he didn’t strike anybody out Landreth didn’t walk anybody either, and his expert ball placement gave the fielders numerous easy opportunities to retire K.C. batsmen. The shutout victory ran Landreth’s record so far in his Greenhorn season to a pristine 12-0 with a 2.92 Earned Run Average over 120 innings. The only blemish on his season? Missing roughly five weeks from the end of May to July 10th due to a shoulder issue. Aside from that, 1873 couldn’t conceivably be going any better for the former #1 overall prospect in baseball. As amazing as his 12-0 record is, it’s easy to see why Landreth has enjoyed the success he’s had so far during his Greenhorn season, as the man possesses an abundance of natural pitching talent: ![]() Landreth probably won’t make the All-Star Game due to the time he’s missed this season due to injury, but if the 23-year-old continues his winning ways then the Greenhorn of the Year award could well be his. The 5-0 win places Knickerbocker’s record at 39-25 (.609). That would be good for a tie with St. John’s atop the Colonial Conference but unfortunately Knick is in the Metropolitan, so they’re nine games behind the 48-16 American juggernaut.

SKAGGS CRACKS FIVE HITS AGAIN, THIS TIME IN WIN MASS. BAY RIGHT FIELDER COMPLETES HIS 2ND FIVE-HIT GAME IN FIVE DAYS BOSTON (July 19, 1873) – Massachusetts Bay is just a game in front of Alleghany for last place in the Colonial Conference, but they did not at all look like a struggling team against Niagara at Oceanside Park on Saturday: ![]() This game was over early, as the hosts went ahead 7-0 by the end of the 2nd inning and never looked back, eventually beating Niagara by sixteen in what made for a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon. 2x All-Star 1B Albert Stoffers collected four hits and C Harry Thompson drove in five runs, but the man of the hour was leadoff man Franklin Skaggs: • B1: Leadoff Double to CF off C. Dempsey (R)Skaggs’ five-hit outburst was his second such outing in five days’ time, as he was 5/5 with three Runs in Mass. Bay’s week-opening loss at St. John’s. Franklin Skaggs entered Week Eleven batting .294 (.683) but his recent performance has raised that figure to .314 (.730 OPS), and after having crossed the plate a dozen times so far this week Skaggs now has scored 65 runs through 65 games. Massachusetts Bay is 28-37, alone in 5th place in the Colonial Conference. Niagara is 33-32, 3rd place and seven games behind leaders St. John’s.

ALLEN HAS HISTORY-MAKING DAY AT COLUMBIA INFIELDER STRIKES SIX & DRIVES IN EIGHT AS BINGHAMTON PLATES NEARLY THIRTY BUFFALO, N.Y. (July 25, 1873) Binghamton might be in 7th place in Upstate New York, but they ran their winning streak to four games thanks to a raucous rout of Columbia in Buffalo on Friday afternoon: ![]() This game was unusual even by blowout standards, because Binghamton went scoreless over the first two innings before their 29-run eruption. Its almost needless to say, but there was a number of star batsmen for the visitors: BING #3 Tiarnan Moore (1B): 4/8, 2B, 4 R, 6 RBI, 5 TBHowever, one player did far more than any of the four listed above, and that was former Quinnipiac All-Star and first-year Binghamton SS Adam Allen: T1: Sac Bunt to move runner to 2BAllens six Hits and eight Runs Batted In both broke Binghamton records for a nine-inning game. His eight RBI also tied the NBBO record, which has now been achieved seven times: #1: Joseph Paige for Victory on July 2nd, 1857 vs BinghamtonAllens 140 Game Score also registers as one of the three highest in NBBO history. Adam Allen is having a very forgettable maiden season with Binghamton .254 AVG (.581 OPS), 39 RBI, -0.7 WAR but the 31-year-old still has All-Star abilities and Binghamton has won four games in a row, so perhaps matters are turning around for the better. The loss dropped Columbia to 6th place in Upstate at 25-28, nine games behind leaders Utica. |

1873 NATIONAL BASE BALL ORGANIZATION ALL-STAR GAME HOSTED BY CUP CHAMPIONS ECKFORD; 32 PLAYERS MAKING THEIR FIRST APPEARANCE BROOKLYN (July 28, 1873) With three weeks left to play in the NBBO season, its time for the annual NBBO All-Star Game! Rules were the same as always: Places 1-6 in each teams roster will go to the best pitchers in each league. It was the New York Leagues turn to host the festivities, and the Executive Committee was in unanimous agreement that last years Tucker-Wheaton Cup champions, Eckford of Greenpoint from the Brooklyn Championship, should be rewarded for their work in 1872. Their venue, the well-liked Manor House grounds, held just under 6,500 spectators. There was no dominant team at this years ASG. Nobody sent more than four representatives, with the two teams to send four being Quaker State of course and surprising Inland leaders Pioneer. The most players any team sent from the New York League was Syracuse with just three, and the NYL had nine different teams represented in the starting lineup. There were a whopping thirty-two first-time nominees (NYL: 18, NEL: 14) at the 15th NBBO All-Star Game, with four Greenhorns taking part two from each league. Seven first-timers were starting, and the most notable of the bunch was Tiger S.C. RF Harmon Card, the only Greenhorn picked to start. Out of the veterans the most notable starter was Metropolitan 1B Jerald Peterson, who had been selected to the All-Star Game for the ninth time. The only other starter making more than his fifth appearance was Victory SS Henry Nabors, who was seeing the field in the ASG for the seventh time in his eight seasons in the NBBO. Rosters for the 1873 NBBO All-Star Game were as follows, with starters marked in red: NEW YORK LEAGUE ROSTERS P: Carl Bancroft (FRO/6th) 20-11, 2.82 ERA, 27 K, 1.28 WHIP, 3.3 WAR P: Fred Bolger (HAR/1st) 17-13, 3.46 ERA, 14 K, 1.42 WHIP, 3.3 WAR P: Sherman Friday (CON/1st) 16-9, 2.89 ERA, 26 K, 1.30 WHIP, 1.8 WAR P: Edward Koch (UNI/1st) 17-14, 2.75 ERA, 16 K, 1.23 WHIP, 3.7 WAR P: Charles Rhodes (NYAC/2nd) 18-12, 2.12 ERA, 23 K, 1.21 WHIP, 4.4 WAR P: Olaf Sorensen (ATL/3rd) 20-9, 2.45 ERA, 31 K, 1.26 WHIP, 4.4 WAR C: Peter Caligiuri (SYR/2nd) .332, 6 2B, 3 3B, 48 RBI, 1.3 WAR C: William Lovato (CON/1st) .355, 10 2B, 4 3B, 44 RBI, 2.5 WAR C: Richard Norlander (STAR/1st) .372, 6 2B, 1 3B, 37 RBI, 1.9 WAR 1B: John Burnett (VIC/1st) .383, 8 2B, 1 3B, 28 RBI, 1.5 WAR 1B: Wilbur Graff (MUT/5th) .326, 18 XBH, 2 HR, 50 RBI, 1.4 WAR 1B: Jerald Peterson (MET/9th) .356, 17 2B, 1 3B, 46 RBI, 1.8 WAR 2B: Chester Alexander (SYR/2nd) .333, 13 2B, 3 3B, 62 RBI, 1.7 WAR 2B: John Baddley (UTI/1st) .306, 1 HR, 42 RBI, 29 SB, +15.0 ZR, 2.4 WAR 2B: William Vogel (MIN/1st) .324, 2 HR, 42 RBI, +13.8 ZR, 2.5 WAR 3B: Dee Holyfield (MER/1st) .365, 14 2B, 4 3B, 40 RBI, 1.6 WAR 3B: Peter James (NYAC/GH) .348, 16 XBH, 2 HR, 47 RBI, 1.3 WAR 3B: Isaac Kelly (ECK/3rd) .379, 19 2B, 3 3B, 43 RBI, +10.1 ZR, 3.6 WAR SS: Edward Davis (UTI/GH) .322, 16 XBH, 2 HR, 60 RBI, 1.5 WAR SS: Jake Johnson (ECK/1st) .285, 8 XBH, 1 HR, 53 RBI, 1.3 WAR SS: Henry Nabors (VIC/7th) .391, 15 2B, 5 3B, 78 RBI, 2.6 WAR LF: Luc Billon (MAR/6th) .353, 13 2B, 6 3B, 60 RBI, 2.4 WAR LF: Isaac Holm (COL/1st) .382, 21 XBH, 1 HR, 58 RBI, 22 SB, 3.2 WAR LF: Troy Oberst (MET/3rd) .374, 12 2B, 4 3B, 52 RBI, 2.7 WAR CF: Alessandro Baldaro (BED/1st) .309, 22 2B, 8 3B, 50 RBI, 2.1 WAR CF: John Kinder (MIN/1st) .274, 8 2B, 4 3B, 33 RBI, 54 SB, 1.9 WAR CF: George Whaley (FRO/1st) .338, 22 XBH, 1 HR, 39 RBI, 30 SB, 2.5 WAR RF: Martin Craven (SYR/2nd) .378, 11 2B, 5 3B, 67 RBI, 2.2 WAR RF: Farris Crowe (BAL/1st) .341, 14 2B, 8 3B, 37 RBI, 2.1 WAR RF: Ashley Hearns (HILL/1st) .282, 12 2B, 12 3B, 47 RBI, 1.8 WAR NORTHEASTERN LEAGUE ROSTERS P: James Dressman (PORT/3rd) 20-10, 3.55 ERA, 18 K, 1.51 WHIP, 4.0 WAR P: John Faulkner (LB/1st) 17-13, 2.81 ERA, 14 K, 1.27 WHIP, 3.7 WAR P: Ross Gill (QS/4th) 22-8, 2.49 ERA, 23 K, 1.15 WHIP, 5.0 WAR P: Earl Henry (SUS/2nd) 19-13, 3.22 ERA, 25 K, 1.31 WHIP, 3.8 WAR P: Charles McCormick (PIO/1st) 18-8, 2.11 ERA, 30 K, 1.21 WHIP, 3.8 WAR P: George Sturgis (OCE/1st) 17-14, 2.74 ERA, 14 K, 1.33 WHIP, 3.4 WAR C: Bertrand Bosley (GM/2nd) .362, 11 2B, 5 3B, 54 RBI, 2.8 WAR C: Jonathan Day (CAN/2nd) .361, 14 XBH, 2 HR, 65 RBI, 1.8 WAR C: Joseph Steele (PIO/2nd) .346, 15 XBH, 2 HR, 51 RBI, 2.2 WAR 1B: Gerhardt Berg (QS/4th) .364, 7 2B, 6 3B, 62 RBI, 1.9 WAR 1B: Edgar Drury (PJ/1st) .380, 11 2B, 1 3B, 49 RBI, 1.4 WAR 1B: Enda Reed (PORT/5th) .379, 29 XBH, 1 HR, 61 RBI, 2.5 WAR 2B: Deacon George (GM/1st) .396, 25 XBH, 1 HR, 59 RBI, 2.7 WAR 2B: Harold Groves (NAT/1st) .336, 9 2B, 5 3B, 42 RBI, 2.4 WAR 2B: Frank Thomas (PIO/3rd) .336, 18 2B, 2 3B, 52 RBI, 2.4 WAR 3B: Dallas Campanelli (PORT/2nd) .351, 14 2B, 3 3B, 61 RBI, 1.9 WAR 3B: Elijah Hill (GM/2nd) .345, 23 2B, 2 3B, 52 RBI, 2.2 WAR 3B: Hoyt Woodford (CAN/1st) .349, 24 XBH, 1 HR, 61 RBI, 2.5 WAR SS: Peter Jones (SotO/1st) .281, 3 2B, 3 3B, 28 RBI, +28.5 ZR, 2.9 WAR SS: William Moriarty (TIG/1st) .344, 4 2B, 2 3B, 33 RBI, 1.8 WAR SS: Earl Seals (TU/3rd) .306, 13 XBH, 42 RBI, 23 SB, +19.2 ZR, 3.2 WAR LF: William Gentilucci (QS/4th) .364, 20 XBH, 1 HR, 66 RBI, 2.0 WAR LF: Ernest Keel (SUS/1st) .359, 10 2B, 4 3B, 49 RBI, 27 SB, 2.0 WAR LF: Charles Wolff (TU/1st) .342, 13 2B, 8 3B, 51 RBI, 21 SB, 2.5 WAR CF: Gus Carlson (NEW/GH) .340, 24 XBH, 1 HR, 59 RBI, 2.1 WAR CF: Ned Morganti (QS/5th) .368, 10 2B, 10 3B, 51 RBI, 21 SB, 2.6 WAR CF: January Webber (CAN/1st) .352, 15 XBH, 1 HR, 50 RBI, 1.8 WAR RF: Harmon Card (TIG/GH) .357, 16 XBH, 2 HR, 54 RBI, 1.1 WAR RF: Peter Huff (SotO/3rd) .344, 14 2B, 7 3B, 36 RBI, 1.5 WAR RF: Charles Rice (PIO/1st) .275, 13 XBH, 1 HR, 45 RBI, 53 SB, 1.4 WAR So, how did the NBBOs All-Star Game turn out? ![]() For the first time in three years the New York League were the victors. The game was decided in the third inning, when the NYL followed up the NELs two-run rally to take a 3-1 with a five-run rally of their own to go ahead 6-3. The hosts never trailed again even though the NEL came to within a run twice: the top of the 7th and the top of the 9th. During the top of the 9th it looked like the NEL would find the tying run or perhaps the go-ahead run, but with one out and men on first & second base Portland 3B Dallas Campanelli grounded into a Double Play, and the game was over. The All-Star Game Most Valuable Player was one who was playing in his home stadium: Eckford 3B Isaac Kelly. NYL #4 I. Kelly (3B, ECK): 2/3 (both 1B), 1 R, 2 RBI, SB (Sub Out in 7th)The pitchers of record were Edward Koch of Union with the Win, James Dressman of Portland with the Loss, and Olaf Sorensen of Atlantic with the Save. Attendance was 6,484 at the Manor House grounds in Brooklyn, and the sellout crowd was able to enjoy a game in sunny, eighty-degree weather that was perfect for a midsummer gathering of the best players in the NBBO.

ROSTERS NAMED FOR 3RD APBL ALL-STAR GAME ST. JOHNS WILL HOST; AMERICAN & SHAMROCK LEAD NOMINATIONS WITH FIVE EACH NEW YORK CITY (July 28, 1873) Final vote tallies taken from fans, coaches, players, and Writers Pool members have been completed, and telegrams detailing the rosters for the 3rd American Professional Baseball League All-Star Game have been sent out across the Northeast. Rosters for the APBL Midsummer Classic arent the same as those in its NBBO counterpart: Twenty players per conferenceThe Colonial Conference is hosting this years game, so it was only natural that the hosting duties be awarded to the conferences only champions: St. Johns and their home venue of Olneyville Field. Among the rosters, 33 of 40 All-Stars are returnees and two are making their 15th appearance: Knickerbocker SS Edward Huntley and Orange LF Samuel Kessler. Every starter this year is a multiple-time All-Star NBBO & APBL with two exceptions: Flour City CF Ernest Dugas & Gotham 1B William Theriault. The other sixteen starters will be players who fans of the sport have known for years, and in some cases well over a decade. The big surprise this year is the absence of Orange SS Anthony Mascherino, who will be missing his first All-Star Game after making his first fourteen between the NBBO & APBL.
