Athletics Walk Boston Off
Oakland, CA — The Oakland Athletics (2-5) rallied late and defeated the Boston Red Sox (5-2) 4–3 in 11 innings Wednesday night at Oakland Coliseum. The game ended dramatically when Oakland first baseman Zack Gelof (HR 1) crushed a solo home run in the bottom of the 11th inning, giving the Athletics the victory. Gelof had just one plate appearance but made it count with the walk-off blast. Oakland collected 12 hits, led by designated hitter Darell Hernaiz, who went 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Third baseman Jake Burger added two hits and an RBI, while second baseman Jacob Wilson (HR 1) connected for a solo homer earlier in the game. Boston received a strong performance from third baseman Rafael Devers (HR 2), who hit a sixth-inning solo home run and scored twice. Infielder Tommy Edman chipped in three hits, including a double and triple, as the Red Sox finished with nine hits. Athletics starter JP Sears allowed one earned run on five hits and one walk over six innings while striking out 6; Game Score 62. Relievers Trevor Martin and Mason Miller covered the next 2 2/3 innings before turning the ball over to reliever Kyle Muller (2-0) who earned the win after pitching the final 2⅓ innings. Boston starter Logan Gilbert went 5⅓ innings in which he permitted two earned runs on eight hits and one walk while striking out six batters; Game Score 49. Jack Leiter kept his team in the game with 3 2/3 innings, seeing just one unearned run scored. Closer Liam Hendriks (0-1) took the loss after surrendering Gelof’s game-winning homer. Player of the Game: JP Sears AL East Standings: 1st Place (1 game lead)

Red Sox, Reds Swap Players
The Boston Red Sox and Cincinnati Reds completed a modest but potentially meaningful early-season trade; swapping a mix of major league experience and minor league upside. The reported details have Boston acquiring a trio of 23-year old minor league prospects in left fielder Ethan O’Donnell, third baseman Yohandy Morales, and first baseman Jack Moss, along with an 11th-round draft pick. In turn, moving to Cincinnati are 29-year-old first baseman Bobby Dalbec, 27-year-old minor league center fielder Victor Robles, and 25-year-old left fielder Allan Cerda. For Boston, I saw this as opportunity to move Dalbec (who was not going to see time at major league level) and Cerda (who I just picked up as minor-league free agent) without any impact to the Organization. Trading Robles was a little tougher, as he is an outstanding defensive outfielder with tremendous speed. Because the Red Sox outfield is already crowded, I saw this trade as acceptable but still caused me to feel a tinge of regret once executed. In return, I pick up decent prospects and an additional draft pick selection. Overall, the trade save Boston approximately $5.4M. I received feedback from my Assistant General Manager that "I don't have a strong opinion about this deal, one way or the other." Cincinnati receives: Code:

Angels Top Red Sox Behind Cobb’s Strong Start
Anaheim, CA — The Los Angeles Angels (2-5) used timely hitting and a solid outing from starter Alex Cobb to defeat the Boston Red Sox (5-3) by a score of 5–3 on Friday night at Angel Stadium. Cobb (2-0) earned the win after pitching six innings, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out three; Game Score 55. The trio of Ben Joyce (H 2), Camden Minacci (H 1), and Robert Stephenson (SV 1) had solid relief outing. The Angels struck first in the second inning when first baseman Tommy Pham (HR 2) launched a two-run home run, giving his team an early 2–0 lead. The Angels added three more runs over the next few innings with the timely hitting of Nolan Schanuel (2 for 4, Double, 2 Runs) and Zach Neto (2 for 4, RBI, Hit-by-Pitch, Stolen Base) to build a cushion. Boston pushed across two runs in the third and added another in the ninth, but the late rally fell short. Rafael Devers drove in two runs for the Red Sox, who finished with eight hits but stranded several runners. Red Sox starter Kutter Crawford (1-1) took the loss after allowing five runs (4 earned) in 4⅔ innings; Game Score 36. Joely Rodriguez and Roansy Contreras pitched well in relief. Player of the Game: Alex Cobb AL East Standings: Tied 1st Place (1/2 game lead)
