There seems to be some debate about the player I posted above as Topeka Jack Johnson. Here is a confirmed Topeka Jack image.

A friend of mine has this picture of a team called the Black Panthers. It was taken in 1936, in L'Assomption, a northern township of Montreal, Quebec. It seems to be a barnstorming team who played against her father's team. They had a great looking jersey, and were very well dressed, cap to socks.

If someone has any idea where these Black Panthers were coming from, and also had some infos on their players, or recognized them, it would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I don't have IDs for the photo, but one of my SABR friends pointed me in the right direction to start digging up information:

The team played in the Quebec Provincial League in 1936-37, headed by George "Chappy" Johnson who recruited players from the US-based Negro Leagues and some barnstormers.

A little more research shows that, according to SABR Researcher Merritt Clifton, the team was mainly comprised of "teenagers from the deep south, away from home for the first time and miserable. Their lineup changed from day to day and week to week as players steadily defected and were replaced."

One of the players who supposedly made an appearance with the team was Ferguson "Hershey" Jenkins, father of the Hall of Fame pitcher. With such a fluid roster, however, it's going to be tough to ID the photo unless we can find a copy with a caption.

Ted "Double Duty" Radcliffe played from 1928-46. He is shown here with Birmingham. He played for the Black Barons from 1942-45. Ted lived to be 103 years old!

Minnie Minoso played for the New York Cubans from 1946-48 before he signed with the Cleveland Indians.
