Not an umpiring picture per se, but rather a rare image of an umpire's brief career as a minor league catcher.

Before his 34 years in the majors, Cousins was a light-hitting catcher in the Detroit and Cleveland farm systems between 1966 and 1970. And he was captured in this classic wire service (AP) photo of an instructor at the Tigers' camp in 1968 using a "pop fly bazooka." Cousins is shown in profile at the farthest right among the four receivers (who include Paul Jata - who would make the Tigers in '72 - and two other career minor leaguers named Dave Bike and George DeVito).

While a look at Cousins' playing career quickly reveals why he went into umpiring, he did draw 74 walks in just 156 games to producer an OBP 114 points higher than his batting average, suggestive of a good eye:

That newly-obtained collection actually has a packet in it devoted to 15-year NL veteran ump Nick Colosi. The date on the envelope is March, 1967, suggesting Colosi worked some spring training games a year before his big league debut.

Images of Colosi are not scarce but as you know, anything taken deliberately of an umpire in the '60s - in color - certainly is!

The action takes place at a major league spring training game in St. Petersburg, FL. The photo is from the Tucson (AZ) Daily Citizen of March 25, 1972. Grimsley and the player are looking at a ball which has stopped on the third base line.

P.S. I've added another non-facial shot of Grimsley. This one from the Indianapolis Star of July 4, 1965.

This one took some work. Retrosheet has Pat Monahan umpiring a lone Major League game in 1931. I found a Philadelphia Inquirer write up from that game, confirming that he was a scout for the Red Sox at the time, and replaced umpire Bill Guthrie, who fell ill.

I found Monahan scouting for several teams throughout his life, including the Red Sox, White Sox, Cubs, Browns, and Cardinals. The first images I found through Google, and mention him scouting for the Cubs in 1949. He is the man in the two pictures on the left.

The next image is from the March 8, 1937 San Antonio Light, where he is a Browns scout. He is the man second from left.

The January 2016 SABR Pictorial History Committee newsletter features an analysis of a photo from Opening Day, April 29, 1886 between the Boston Beaneaters and New York Giants. Work by Tom Shieber and John Thorn has confirmed that missing umpire and player Wes Curry is featured in the photo.

That is Dick Williams' hand in front of Baird's face, but one can see a fair amount of what this missing umpire looked like. The photo is from the Rochester (NY) Democrat and Chronicle of April 17, 1979.

This photo is from the Cincinnati Enquirer of February 2, 1963. The photo caption indicated that Andress was a Northern Kentucky umpire and the occasion was his being sworn in as a new officer of the Queen City Association of Umpires. Another article in the Cincinnati Enquirer in 1972 gave Andress as a contact point for the Queen City Association. Our replacement umpire named Andress in 1979 performed his duties in Cincinnati.
