Game 33: St. Louis Browns vs. Boston Americans

Andy Coakly (4-6) limited the Americans to 2 earned runs on 3 hits, 2 walks, and a hit batsman to pick up the win; Game Score of 73. Wow, things really are not going well for the Americans. In what turned out to be the St. Louis Browns (18-16) 8th consecutive win, they topped the Boston Americans (13-21) by a score of 8 to 3.
Rookie pitcher Weldon Henley (5-4) picked up the victory, allowing 3 runs (1 earned) on 6 hits, 4 walks, and a hit batsman; Game Score of 69. Sam Leever (3-5) was tagged with the loss after allowing 8 runs (7 earned) on 14 hits, 2 walk, and a wild pitch in 8 2/3 innings of play; Game Score of 29. Jake Boyd covered the final 1/3 inning. Game 35: St. Louis Browns vs. Boston Americans
An overall solid performance on both sides of the plate allowed the Boston Americans (14-21) to get the 6 to 2 win over the St. Louis Browns (18-17).
Jesse Tannehill (4-5) tossed the ball well, allowing 2 runs (1 earned) on 8 hits to lower his season ERA to 2.90 and finish with a Game Score of 71. Tom Hughes (5-3) took the loss due to surrendering 6 earned runs on 15 hits and 1 walk; Game Score of 31. The Boston offense came alive today, as they smacked 4 triples on their way to the 15-hit day. Leading the way were Fred Clarke (3 for 3, Triple, Run, 2 RBIs), Bill Lange (2 for 5, Triple, 2 Runs, Stolen Base), Frank Chance (2 for 4, Triple, Run, RBI), and Dave Brain (2 for 3, RBI, Walk, Stolen Base). Kip Selbach (3 for 4, Double) and Charlie Babb (2 for 4, Run, Stolen Base) played well in the loss. Player of the Game: Jesse Tannehill (Season: #4 / Career: #44)

Game 36: Detroit Tigers vs. Boston Americans
A much closer game than the score would indicate, though it ended as many games have this year; a loss for the Americans. In the latest instance of disappointing the hometown fans, the Boston Americans (14-22) went down in defeat to the rival Detroit Tigers (21-15) by a score of 4 to 1.
Doc White (7-4) picked up the win by limiting the opposition to 1 earned run on 6 hits and 1 walk; tossing 116 total pitches to finish with a Game Score of 75. Cy Young (3-6) was tagged with the loss despite giving up just 2 runs (1 earned) on 3 hits and 1 walk in 8 innings of play; Game Score of 71. Closer Jose Ramos pitched the final inning in which he allowed 2 unearned runs on 2 hits and 1 walk. Not a pretty outing by Ramos but his ERA remains at 0.00 on the season. The Tigers offense was led by Candy LaChance (1 for 3, Double, Run), Freddy Parent (2 for 4, 2 RBIs), and Jack McCarthy (1 for 2, Run, RBI, Stolen Base). Boston's limited output was found in the batting skills of Jiggs Donahue (3 for 3, RBI) and Frank Chance (1 for 3, Walk). Player of the Game: Doc White

Game 37: Detroit Tigers vs. Boston Americans
I'm not going to lie, coming back for the win was a complete surprise. Down by a score of 6 to 0 heading into the bottom of the 6th inning, the Boston Americans (15-22) mounted a comeback that resulted in a dramatic 7 to 6 walk-off victory over the Detroit Tigers (21-16).
Noodles Hahn got the nod for the start but did not factor into the decision, as he allowed 6 earned runs on 9 hits, 2 walks, and 1 hit batsman in 7 innings of play; Game Score of 38. Reliever Oscar Jones (1-1) finished the final 2 innings to pick up the win, allowing just 1 hit and 1 walk in the victory. Bob Ewing (4-3) took the loss after allowing 7 runs (6 earned) on 8 hits and 4 walks in 8 1/3 innings of play. The Americans scoring was led by Frank Chance (2 for 5, Homerun, Run, 3 RBIs), Jiggs Donahue (2 for 4, Triple, 3 RBIs), and Bill Lange (1 for 3, 2 Runs, RBI, 2 Walks, 2 Stolen Bases). The Tigers were led by Roger Bresnahan (2 for 5, Homerun, Run, 3 RBIs), Eddie Abbaticchio (3 for 4, Run, Walk), and Mike Donlin (1 for 5, Double, Run, RBI, Stolen Base). Player of the Game: Frank Chance (Season: #1 / Career: #7)

Game 38: Detroit Tigers vs. Boston Americans
A fast start with 5 runs in the 1st inning helped the Boston Americans (16-22) cruise to a 9 to 1 victory over the Detroit Tigers (21-17). This was a solid performance on both sides of the ball, and is a rather welcome sight to see.
Sam Leever (4-5) picked up the win, allowing 1 earned run on 4 hits and 2 walks on just 107 total pitches; Game Score of 75. Norwood Gibson (4-5) lasted 7 1/3 innings in which he served up 8 earned runs on 9 hits, 4 walks, and 1 hit batsman to finish with a Game Score of 24. Nixey Callahan was called in to cover the final 2/3 innings, allowing 1 earned run on 2 hits and 1 wild pitch. The Americans enjoyed several fine batting lines today, with Dave Brain (3 for 4, Homerun, 2 Runs, 4 RBIs), Homer Smoot (2 for 4, Run, 2 RBIs), and John Farrell (2 for 4, 2 Runs, RBI, Stolen Base) leading the way. The limited offense of the Tigers came from Tom Daly (1 for 3, Run) and Roger Bresnahan (0 for 2, RBI, Walk). Player of the Game: Dave Brain (Season: #1 / Career: #5) *** Thread post 666. For you Maiden fans, Up The Irons! *** .

Veteran Cy Seymour is having a great season for his Washington Senators and last week was no exception. In taking home American League Player of the Week honors, Seymour went 13 for 28 (.464 batting average) with 2 Doubles, 3 Triples, 2 Runs, 5 RBIs, and 1 Stolen Base on his way to a slash line of .464/.464/.750. National League Player of the Week
The #2 overall selection in the most recent draft, Red Ames was viewed as a pitcher who should make an immediate impact. Not only has Ames lived up to the lofty expectations thus far (7-4 record with a 1.62 ERA), he strung together an outstanding week to take home the National League Player of the Week honors. In picking up his first PofW award, Ames posted a 2-1 record with a 0.00 ERA in 24 innings of play that resulted in 0.8 WAR and 1.2 WPA.

Game 39: Boston Americans vs. Cleveland Naps
Looking to extend its winning streak, the Boston Americans (16-23) travelled to Ohio to take on the Cleveland Naps (20-19). A late-inning blast by Doc Gessler turned the tide, as Cleveland topped Boston by a score of 8 to 7.
Neither starting pitcher factored into the decision, with Kid Nichols allowing 7 runs (1 earned) on 8 hits and 5 walks in 6 innings of play (Game Score of 39) and Noodles Hahn serving up 6 earned runs on 11 hits, 1 walk, and 1 hit batsman (Game Score of 31). The game turned on the performances of relief pitching, with Jake Weimer (7-2) picking up the win on 2 innings of scoreless ball (2 hits and 1 strikeout) and Jim Hughes earning his 1st save of the season (1 inning of scoreless pitching). On the other side of the ledger, Jose Ramos (0-1) committed his 1st blown save of the season and was tagged with the loss after allowing 2 unearned runs on 1 hit in 1 inning of play. The Naps offense was led by George Van Haltren (2 for 3, Double, 2 Runs, 2 RBIs), Doc Gessler (2 for 4, Homerun, Run, 2 RBI, Stolen Base), and Harry Wolverton (2 for 4, Double, Run). The Americans' scoring was contributed by Jesse Hoffmeister (2 for 4, 2 Runs, Stolen Base), Fred Clarke (2 for 4, Run, Stolen Base), and Kid Elberfeld (1 for 3, (Run, 3 RBIs, Walk, Stolen Base). Player of the Game: George Van Haltren

Game Performance Spotlight: Jimmy Sebring
While his season may not be off to the hot start he was hoping for, Boston Beaneaters outfielder Jimmy Sebring had an outstanding game. On the day, Sebring went 5 for 5 (Triple, 2 Runs, RBI) in a tough 10 to 9 loss.

Game 40: Boston Americans vs. Cleveland Naps
A nice performance by the visiting team, as the Boston Americans (17-23) topped the Cleveland Naps (20-20) by a 5 to 1 score. A solid combination of reliable pitching and timely hitting proved more than enough for the Boston victory.
Getting the win was Jesse Tannehill (5-5) who limited the opposition to just 1 earned run on 6 hits, 2 walks, and 1 hit batsman; Game Score 72. After a rough start to the season, Tannehill is showing signs of having turned things around. Taking the loss was Watty Lee (6-4) who allowed 5 earned runs on 12 hits and 1 wild pitch; Game Score 45. The hitting stars of the game for the Americans were John Farrell (3 for 4, Triple, Run, 3 RBIs), Frank Chance (2 for 4, 2 Runs, Stolen Base), and Chick Stahl (2 for 4, Run, RBI, Stolen Base). The Naps relied on Harry Wolverton (2 for 3, Double), Ed Delahanty (2 for 4, RBI), and Doc Gessler (0 for 2, Run, Walk, 2 Stolen Bases). Player of the Game: Jesse Tannehill (Season: #5 / Career: #45)

Game 41: Boston Americans vs. Cleveland Naps
A rather lackluster offensive performance by the Americans (17-24) resulted in Cleveland's (21-20) 3 to 1 victory. With the loss, Boston has now dropped 7 of 13 series played during the 1903 season, and is looking more and more like any meaningful run at a playoff spot is rather unlikely. I don't want to be too reactionary, but if the team is still sitting near the bottom of the standings come mid-June, I will look to make some changes to position for success 2 to 4 years down the road.
Jake Weimer (8-2) had a dominant performance, allowing 1 earned run on 3 hits and 2 walks to cruise in the 103 pitch complete game victory; Game Score 78. Cy Young (3-7) was tagged with the loss after allowing 3 runs (2 earned) on 9 hits and 3 walks; Game Score 53. As an aside, I had targeted Weimer as my top choice in the 1902 draft and hoped he would somehow fall to my draft spot. The Cleveland offense was powered by Ed Delahanty (3 for 4, 2 Doubles, Run, RBI), Doc Gessler (1 for 4, Homerun, Run, RBI), and Harry Wolverton (2 for 4). The Americans were led by John Farrell (1 for 3, Run, Stolen Base), Bill Lange (1 for 3, Walk, Stolen Base), and Jiggs Donahue (1 for 3, RBI). Player of the Game: Jake Weimer

Chicago Makes Managerial Change!
It was not a matter of if the Chicago White Sox would fire their manager, only when they would do so. Today was that day! In a hastily scheduled news conference, General Manager Ivan Vazquez announced that the team was parting ways with Manager John McCloskey; effective immediately. With an MLB worst 10-32 record, climbing out of last-place will be no easy task for the next manager.

Game 42: New York Highlanders vs. Boston Americans
Contrary to the headline, the loss was not a stunning revelation. Rather, another instance of poor defense and limited offense leading to defeat. Here, the New York Highlanders (27-15) topped the Boston Americans (17-25) by a 3 to 2 score.
Addie Joss (8-3) pitched a fine game, allowing 2 runs (1 earned) on 7 hits, 2 walks, and a wild pitch to finish the 126 pitch outing with a Game Score of 69. While Sam Leever (4-6) kept the team in contention, he took the loss after allowing 3 runs (2 earned) on 9 hits; Game Score 64. The Naps received offense from Addie Joss (2 for 4, Homerun, Run, RBI), Jimmy Bannon (2 for 4, 2 Runs, 3 Stolen Bases), and Harry Davis (1 for 3, Double). The Americans were led by Chick Stahl (1 for 3, Run, Walk, Stolen Base), John Farrell (1 for 3, Run, Walk), and Homer Smoot (1 for 1, RBI). Player of the Game: Addie Joss

Game 43: New York Highlanders vs. Boston Americans
Another win for the American League leading New York Highlanders (28-15) as they bested the Boston Americans (17-26) by a score of 5 to 2. The loss dropped Boston to 11 games back in the AL race and firmly into second to last place in the standings.
Picking up the win for the Highlanders was Barney Wolfe (6-5). On the day, Wolfe allowed 2 earned runs on 6 hits, 4 walks, and 1 hit batsman; Game Score 65. Noodles Hahn (4-6) was saddled with the loss after serving up 5 earned runs on 10 hits and 2 walks; Game Score 47. The Highlanders offense came from the middle of their lineup (3-5 hitters), with Jimmy Collins (2 for 4, Triple, 2 Runs, RBI), Harry Davis (2 for 4, Triple, 2 Runs, 2 RBIs), and Lave Cross (2 for 4, RBI) each having a fine day at the plate. Wolfe also helped his cause by going 1 for 3 (Run, Walk, Stolen Base). The limited offense that Boston received came from Bill Lange (1 for 3, Triple, Walk), Jiggs Donahue (1 for 4, Double, RBI), and Fred Clarke (1 for 4, RBI). Player of the Game: Barney Wolfe

Game 44: New York Highlanders vs. Boston Americans
Trying to come up with some way to soften the blow of getting swept again, or find the proverbial silver lining in how the team is playing. Unfortunately, there is nothing great to say about this loss or the overall performance of the team. In the latest defeat, the New York Highlanders (29-15) topped the Boston Americans (17-27) by a score of 9 to 3.
Wiley Piatt (8-3) picked up the victory by limiting the opposition to 3 runs (1 earned) on 8 hits and 5 walks; Game Score 60. Jesse Tannehill (5-6) lasted 7 innings before bowing out after giving up 7 runs (6 earned) on 12 hits, 4 walks, and 1 hit batsman; Game Score 27. Al Orth covered the final 2 innings in which he allowed 2 earned runs on 3 hits. The New York offense was clicking today, pounding out 15 hits (4 for extra bases) and were led by Lave Cross (4 for 5, Double, 2 Runs, RBI), Jimmy Bannon (1 for 3, Triple, Run, 3 RBIs, 2 Walks), and Roy Thomas (2 for 5, Run, 2 Stolen Bases). The Americans got solid contribution from Fred Clarke (2 for 5, 2 RBIs) and Ossee Schreckengost (2 for 3, Run, Walk). Player of the Game: Lave Cross
