1967 Heavyweight and Light Heavyweight Replay
01/16/67
Worcester, MA, USA Jose (King) Roman – HW (9-0-0) vs. Tony Burwell – HW (0-3-0) Tony Burwell - USA Rating 1 Heavyweight 1963-75 3 wins / 22 losses / 1 draw / 1 KO Hometown: PHiladelphia, PA Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto Little defense with a glass like jaw appeared to maybe being Burwell's big problems. He was stopped in 14 of his 22 losses. His only 3 wins were against HW-Kevin Doug Hogan(15-4-0,11), HW-Jesse Crown(30-20-1,19) and LHW-Pete Riccitelli(52-30-1,21). His defeats included a fairly respectable list of opponents. They included 2 losses to Willie Ray Richardson, Bob Drover and Bob Cleroux, along with single defeats to Jose (King) Roman, Jimmy McDermott, Joe Alexander, Obie English, John Conteh, Doug Kirk, Cliff McDonals and after having been out of the ring for almost 3 years, in March 1975 he lost his last time to John (Dino) Dennis. The fight.... Roman was in the early stages to building his career into a top contender in the early 1970’s. Roman had fought and won 8 fights starting his career in June 1966 and then won his 9th fight a week earlier in this same town of Worcester watching him defeat Joe Webb by TKO earlier in our replay. Burwell, after loosing by KO in the 1st round in his first professional fight in September 1963 then did not fight again until climbing back in the ring in December 1966 getting KO’d in the 3rd by Jimmy Payne and the loosing a 6 round decision to Willie Ray Richardson. So, we see Burwell here still trying to re jump start his career. In 1967, these two tangled in a scheduled 8 round fight going the distance with Roman coming out with a decision. In our replay, things came out pretty much the same, with Roman again winning by 8 round decision, though this time it was a Unanimous Decision. It was really a closer fight then the final outcome through 6 rounds with a lot of maneuvering and really not a lot of action. The last 2 rounds though, Roman started taking the fight inside and quickly wore Burwell down outscoring him at will. There were no knockdowns in the fight. Final linescore was 79-73, 78-74, 77-75, Roman. |

1967 Heavyweight and Light Heavyweight Replay
01/16/67
Worcester, MA, USA Pedro Agosto – HW (9-0-0) vs Billy Hardiman – HW (0-0-0) Billy Hardiman - USA Rating 1 Heavyweight 1967-71 1 win / 5 losses / 0 draws / 0 KO Hometown: New York, NY Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto First career fight was in January 1967 against Pedro Agosto who was sporting a 9-0-0 record in his early career. Agosto KO'd Hardiman in the 4th round and he didn't get back in the ring for over 2 years. Finally in May 1969 he fought for the 2nd time of his career, with worse results, a 1st round KO at the hands of Dick Hall. That followed with decision losses to Jesse Brown and a MW-Willie Stewart(5-2-0,2) before winning a 4 round UD against a Paul McDonough who was fighting his first and last career fight. Hardiman's last fight was in January 1971 loosing on points to another MW-Skip Yeaton(35-25-3,19). The fight... Like fellow Puerto Rico heavyweight, Jose Roman, Agosto is in Worcester for the 2nd straight week for a heavyweight bout having knocked out in the first last Monday, Bob Hazelton for his 9th win without defeat. This Monday he’s taking on new comer out of New York, Billy Hardiman. Agosto ended up with a pretty easy time of it back in January 1967, knocking out Hardiman in the 4th round. In our replay, Agosto does Hardiman in even quicker and easier as pummels Hardiman with hooks, crosses and uppercuts sending Hardiman down for a 5 count about halfway through the first round, then he moves in close forcing Hardiman against the ropes and continues to pound away before finally at the 2:14 mark of the 1st round, the referee calls it off, handing Agosto a 1st round TKO victory for win number 10. |

Samoa * He didn't beat anyone decent, but I remember him as a pretty entertaining puncher around 90-91. He had a fight with Golata where he hurt the big Pole with a righthand and Andrew lost it and bit him on the neck. * He differs from the other fighters that I've been posting because he isn't currently active.

1967 Heavyweight and Light Heavyweight Replay
01/16/67
Walpole, MA, USA Bob Benoit – LHW (3-0-0) vs. Tony Diamond – LHW (0-8-2) Benoit is posted earlier in this replay in his first fight of 1967 Tony Diamond - Rating 1 Light Heavyweight 1965-67 0 wins / 10 losses / 2 draws / 0 KO Alias: Norman A. Lucas Hometown: Newark, NJ Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto Fought 4 other fighters of noteworthy status as far as records go. Diamond lost twice by KO to Eddie Spence(36-12-0,22), and twice to Pete Riccitelli(52-30-1,21) both of whom held the New Endland LHW Title in the early 1970's. Diamond also lost by KO to MW Paul Christie(27-13-0,19) and by a 4 round decision in January 1967 to Bob Benoit(37-8-0,12). The Fight..... Diamond’s brief career was on it’s way out the door fought exclusively in New England. Benoit’s career is just getting started. He’s coming off a 3rd round KO of Leroy Smith a couple weeks back here in Walpole in our 67 replay. Back in 67, Benoit and Diamond matched up for a short 4 round affair for the up and coming Benoit. The fight ended in a 4 round decision victory for Benoit. Our replay ended in a decision also for Benoit, this time though a Unanimous Decision. At the 1:48 mark in the first round, Benoit throws a cross that lands Diamond on his back for a quick 3 count. Benoit though doesn’t take advantage of the advantage to finish off Diamond. It ends in a 40-35, 40-35, 38-37 scoring UD for Benoit. Judge 3 scored rounds 2 and 4 to Diamond. Round 4 there could be some argument for it going to Tony in a very close and boring closing round. Round 2 though, I think you had some of that judge bias going Diamond’s way. |

1967 Heavyweight and Light Heavyweight Replay
And to finish, AT LAST, January 16th....!
01/16/67 Walpole, MA, USA George Chuvalo – HW (41-13-2) vs. Vic Brown – HW (8-6-0) Chuvalo, I'm posting a file here with some bio info writeup included, otherwise it's the game's rating of George. Vic Brown - USA Rating 1 Heavyweight 1963-1982 27 wins / 29 losses / 0 draw / 19 KO Alias: Roger Black Hometown: Buffalo, NY Manager: Johnny Sudac Original Rating by: Billy Dennis Some Revisions by: Rocco Del Sesto Lost fights to Alvin(Blue) Lewis, George Chuvalo(Twice), Ray Anderson, Aaron Eastling, Bob Stallings, Tony Doyle, Ernie Terrell, Ken NOrton, Floyd Patterson, Roy(Tiger) Williams. Finished his career with 10 straight lost fights. Most noteable wins including those over Burke Emery(45-15-2 LHW), Willie Ray Richardson, Von clay, Bill Drover, Ron Marsh, the 60's Harold Carter and Charley Polite. Interesting how his career was a rollercoster starting out a less then illustrious 9-11-0, then he peaked in the middle going 18-8 before falling apart with the 10 straight losses at the end. Billy Daniels' original creation of Brown is posted in cornerwork. With some play testing I did some revisions of my own to it which I used in the replay fight. The Fight.... Coming into 1967, Chuvalo is coming off 6 straight victories all by stoppages after having lost a 10 round Majority Decision to Oscar Bonavena in June the previous year. That loss coming only two fights after loosing his 15 round UD World Heavyweight Fight with Ali. Vic Brown is coming off 5 straight wins himself in the later half of 1966, the last being a 2nd round KO of Bill Drover. Previous to that he’d lost 5 straight including a 1st round TKO to Alvin (Blue) Lewis. Their fight back in 1967 lasted into the 4th round when Chuvalo knocked out Brown. Our replay was not much unlike the fight in 1967. I scheduled this as an 8 rounder. Chuvalo, simply dominated this fight. In round 1, Chuvalo throws all sorts of combination of punches, putting Brown on the defensive from the start. Chuvalo outpoints Brown 21-0 in the round. Round 2 starts with Brown surprising Chuvalo with a crushing right to the head seconds into the round. George comes right back though scoring a hard hook. After that is much the same as the 1st round, with Chuvalo pointing Brown 19-4. In round 3, Chuvalo lands a wicked cross to Brown’s head and drops Vic to the canvas, but Brown manages to get himself up in 7. Chuvalo keeps up the heat out pointing brown 14-0 before Brown manages to land but then at 2:37 in round 3, Chuvalo landed a short, clean cross that catches Brown flush, dropping him with that shot. Again, Brown manages to get to his feet, this time in 8, but he’s obviously very shaken with that last punch and finally at 2:51 in the 3rd round, the referee stops the fight. Winner by 3rd round TKO, George Chuvalo. George had out pointed Brown in that last round 27-3. This was probably one of the more lopsided fights thus far I’ve seen. |
