MBL news: Sept.. 26 -- Akron claimed title in American League East
The Akron Flying Feet claimed the title of the American League East Division on Tuesday, despite an 8-1 loss to Fort Wayne.
The Feet (87-70) own a six-game lead over both Cleveland and Toledo with five games remaining in the season. Akron, however, will have a tough time catching Grand Rapids for the best record in the American League. The Traders are 91-66 and own a four-game lead over Fort Wayne in the West Division standings. The division title is the third for the Feet, and their first since 2025. Akron has never won the MBL title. Last edited by rink23; 08-20-2021 at 05:28 AM. |

Walkers news: Sept. 27 -- St. Louis 9, Madison 6
Record: 73-86, 5th, 25 GB Des Moines
Wayne McHaney homered twice to help power St. Louis to a 9-6 win over Madison at Comsikey Park (1969). The River Walkers took the final two games of the three-game series. Down 1-0, St. Louis took control with three runs in the top of the second inning and two more in the third to go up 5-1. Rookie Bob Saavedra drove in the first run of the second with a single off Madison starter Ben Hughes. The other two scored on a Daniel Becerra singe, which also included a throwing error by right fielder Alex Greene. McHaney did most of the damage in the third with a two-out, two-run homer. McHaney's second homer came in the sixth, a lead-off shot off Muskies reliever Ben Johnson. It made the score 6-2. Becerra hit a two-run homer off Ben Schellenger in the sixth to make it 8-2. A RBI double by Hector Tavarez off Bobby Westerman put St. Louis ahead 9-3. The Muskies made it interesting in the ninth, scoring three times, including a two-run homer from Armando Trevino off Greg Sones. But Scott Rissler came on, and although he did give up a lead-off double to Jordan Groshans, he did retire the next two to end it. Walkers starting pitcher Jesse McNaboe came out of his final start of the season with his 10th win. McNaboe (10-8) allowed three runs on seven hits over six innings. He struck out four and walked one. David Amocacci and Luke Dunkin both pitched scoreless innings of relief. Sones started the ninth, but could not finish it as Rissler stepped in to record the final two outs. |

Gabriel Hagan led off the top of the 13th inning with a home run off St. Louis relief pitcher Jim Martin, and Quad City went on to defeat St. Louis 9-7 at Busch Stadium (2006). The victory gave the Thunder wins in two of the three games in the season-ending series between the teams. The Thunder added another run after the Hagan homer. Christian Moore followed the home run with a single. Martin, who was pitching because the St. Louis bullpen was low on arms and it was the last game of the season, then exited the contest. Nick Ruffalo took over and took some lumps. He opened with a walk to Ben Nelson. However, he got Paul Totten to hit into a double play. But Angel Solis followed with a double to make it 9-7. At one point, the River Walkers had trailed 7-2. They tied it in the bottom of the eighth on a Nathaniel Dixon double off Mike Evanson. Pascal Marcovicci lasted just 3.2 innings as the starter for the Thunder. he allowed five runs on five his. After that, QC used eight relief pitchers -- beginning with Russell Berg, who worked two innings and allowed one run. After that, it was Bobby Stover (0.1 IP), Evanson (1.2), Edwin Cervantes (0.1), Troy Respasky (1.0), Craig Fritzler (2.0), Scott Reeves (1.0) and Drew Mendoza (1.0). Reeves (2-0) earned the win.
