Game 46: Washington Senators vs. Boston Americans

NO-HITTER!

What a day for pitcher Sam Leever, as he recorded just the 2nd no-hitter in MLB history when the Boston Americans (19-27) thumped the Washington Senators (23-23) by a score of 3 to 0.

Leever's (5-6) historic day saw him no-hit the opposition on just 85 total pitches, allowing 1 walk to finish with a Game Score of 86. The shutout lowered his ERA to 3.24 on the season. Jack Chsbro (4-4) was saddled with the loss after allowing 3 earned runs on 9 hits, 1 walk, and 1 hit batsman; Game Score 56. While Leever didn't need much help, the Boston offense was powered by Frank Chance (2 for 3, Double, Run), Bill Lange (2 for 4, Run, Stolen Base), and Chick Stahl (2 for 3, RBI, Walk).

Carl Lundgren covered the final inning in a scoreless effort.

On the offensive side of the plate, the Americans were led by Fred Clarke (3 for 4, 2 Triples, 2 Runs, 2 RBIs) and Danny Shay (3 for 4, RBI, Stolen Base). The limited offense of the Senators came from Danny Green (1 for 4, Homerun, Run, RBI) and Bobby Wallace (1 for 3, Double). Of note, Clarke's 2 Triples tied an American League regular season record.

Game 49: Boston Americans vs. Philadelphia Athletics

The pitchers got rocked, the defense couldn't field the ball, but the respective offenses were locked in a power display. Despite being down 7 to 2 and 9 to 4, the Boston Americans (22-27) were able to mount a come back to drive the game into extra-innings and then prevail over the Philadelphia Athletics (30-19) by a football-like score of 17 to 13.

Neither starting pitched lasted long enough to factor into the decision. For the Americans, Cy Young took the mound but was knocked out after 3 innings due to giving up 7 runs (4 earned) on 4 hits and 2 hit batsmen; Game Score 27. Jake Boyd came into the game for 3 innings of relief (2 runs, 1 earned on 3 hits and 1 walk), followed by Doc Amole (1 scoreless inning), Jose Ramos (1 inning in which he allowed 4 runs, 1 earned on 2 hits and 2 walks, Blown Save #2 for the season), followed by Oscar Jones (2-1) who picked up the win in his 3 scoreless innings of play. For the Athletics, Mordecai Brown went 7 innings, allowing 7 runs (1 earned) on 7 hits, 2 walks, and 1 hit batsman; Game Score 48. Lave Winham (Blown Save #1) lasted just 2/3 of an inning in which he was rocked for 4 earned runs on 5 hits and 1 wild pitch, who then was replaced by Red Donahue (3-1) who was credited with the loss after serving up 6 earned runs on 7 hits and 3 walks. Happy Townsend covered the final 2/3 of an inning in the defeat. A combined 451 pitched were thrown on the day!

As noted above, this was a hitting-day for many players. For Boston, Frank Chance (4 for 6, 4 Runs, 2 RBIs, 2 Stolen Bases), Fred Clarke (3 for 6, 2 Doubles, 2 Runs, 4 RBIs, Walk), and Jesse Hoffmeister (2 for 5, Homerun, Double, 3 Runs, RBI, Walk) played great. Philadelphia's plate success was led by Honus Wagner (3 for 6, Double, 3 Runs, 2 RBI), George Davis (1 for 5, Double, Run, 3 RBIs, Walk), and Dick Harley (2 for 5, 2 Runs).

Player of the Game: Frank Chance (Season: #2 / Career: #8)

American League Player of the Week

Charlie Hickman has the makings of being a special player. The Detroit Tiger infielder had things in synch last week, as he took home American League Player of the Week honors. Hickman swatted the ball to the tune of a .520 batting average (13 for 25), with a Double, Triple, 3 Runs, 5 RBIs, Walk, and 3 Stolen Bases which was good for a slash line of .520/.538/.640 that generated a 251 OPS+, 240 wRC+, 0.25 WPA, and 0.6 WAR. This is the 3rd time that Hickman has taken home PofW honors.

Power Rankings

A change at the top of the Power Rankings leader board. The Chicago Cubs (32-18) now sit atop of the list, ahead of the New York Highlanders (32-18) and the Philadelphia Athletics (30-20). Thanks in large part to a 6-game winning streak, the Boston Americans (23-27) have moved up to 9th in the rankings. The Chicago White Sox (14-36) continue to maintain their firm hold on last place.
