As long as you can win a batting title going something like .310 now, we're gonna be fine with an umpire getting only 31% of his calls correct!

At least that's what I get from Angel Hernandez having held a job for several decades.

Apparently her first day went alright.

Jen Pawol makes MLB history as first female umpire to work a regular-season game

That is, nothing happened except umpiring! Which should be the case; we should not ever need to be talking about umpires, if you think about it.

Today will be another test with her behind the plate. She has to be experiencing some butterflies, I imagine.

Of course, her ultimate challenge will be when Aaron Boone gets into her face over a call that he doesn't like. All's fair, of course, and she has to be able to take that crap.

EDIT: ESPN has a better article: https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/...ar-season-game

I did a double-take at this headline:

Mariano Rivera tears Achilles during Yankees' Old-Timers' game

What? But yes, it's true. He was baserunning.

This is him, hitting a single off of Andy Pettitte. He actually looked pretty good at the plate, especially for a 55-year-old guy.

The Brewers and Indians seem to be eating their Wheaties of late. Detroit needs some of those.

And by "their Wheaties", you mean "the Mets". Y'all're gonna have to talk to the schedule-maker about that. Sorry.

And Babe had to fight through the dead-ball era, and was hitting against spitballs and the like.

Huh? The Babe played his 674th game in 1921 when he was 26y, 7m, 10d old. (Yes, you can actually see the date players played their ###th game.) And Shohei played his 674th game in 2023 only 12 days after he turned 29. So it's closer to a 2.5 year difference. Plus, Shohei played his first 5 years in Japan and it's not like he could have played in MLB if he wanted to. But he was so dominant in Japan (in 2016 at age 21/22 he won MVP) that I'd be surprised if he wouldn't have also been at least a decent MLB player in those years.

Whatever, I think it's rather silly to compare players from such different eras and it's especially silly to compare pitcher W/L records.

Shohei is showing signs of injury bug. I wouldn't bet on him being able to do this in his age 35 and age 40 years.

I don't think the purpose of that image is to proclaim Ohtani is just as good as Ruth or visa versa. I think it just shows an amazing coincidence. I don't know why people see that & think it is something to debate.

Lo, low. It is incumbent upon you to come forth and comment upon this.

Brewers win 10 straight again but eye 'bigger goals'

Quote:
The Brewers extended their current win streak to 10 with a 7-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. Earlier in the season, Milwaukee won 11 straight, and with Monday's victory joined the Houston Astros (2019 and 1969), Los Angeles Dodgers (2017), Toronto Blue Jays (2015), Atlanta Braves (2013), St. Louis Cardinals (2001), Pirates (1978), Kansas City Royals (1977) and the New York Mets (1969) as the only teams to have two double-digit wins streaks since MLB expanded in 1969, according to MLB.com.

There's a good chance it ends tonight facing the best pitcher in MLB.

But, it's whatever. I just want to see a championship in my lifetime.

Well, that gives me something to root for, if I root for anybody now.

I think Umpire Scorecards is better than Umpire Auditor because you can actually see what they're deeming correct/incorrect and with context

A victory [today] would also trigger a promotion from local diner chain George Webb, which has promised to give away free hamburgers if the Brewers win 12 straight. The tradition, which began during the days of the old minor league Brewers of the American Association, went unfulfilled during the Braves' 13-season stint in Milwaukee but finally came to fruition in 1987 then again in 2018, when the Brewers closed the regular season with eight straight victories before winning four in a row to open the postseason.
We are this close!
