NABL News: Draft Pool Revealed Friday, September 12th, 1941 For would-be rookies, a list of whom was announced today by the league, the wait to find out whether or not they have been selected is excruciating. It's tough just getting a scout to notice you, to think you are worth investing an organization's future in. Then draft day arrives and you are snatched up by someone you might not have expected. Russ Christopher, 24 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 2. Buddy Blattner, 21 year-old shortstop out of college. 3. Hi Bithorn, 25 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 4. It's a combination of good hands, knowing how to play the hitters, all-out hustle and a willingness to sacrifice your body to make a play. Good speed and a good arm never hurt, either, but not always required. This year's all-defense team in the American League consists of: Pitcher: Johnny Podgajny (Chicago White Sox) Catcher: Ernie Lombardi (Chicago White Sox) First Baseman: Les Fleming (New York Yankees) Second Baseman: Joe Gordon (New York Yankees) Third Baseman: Dario Lodigiani (St. Louis Browns) Shortstop: Lonny Frey (Philadelphia Athletics) Left Fielder: Dixie Walker (Boston Red Sox) Center Fielder: Terry Moore (Cleveland Indians) Right Fielder: Enos Slaughter (Cleveland Indians) 1941 NL Best Newcomer Named Monday, October 20th, 1941 The outstanding National League newcomer for 1941 has been selected and the trophy goes to St. Louis left fielder Stan Musial. He wrapped up his first year with a .297 batting average, 25 doubles, 14 triples and 17 home runs. Musial also had 76 RBIs and scored 100 times. Head Awarded AL Rookie Trophy Monday, October 20th, 1941 Ed Head's age didn't show very often in his first year. He performed more like a veteran on the hill for the New York Yankees and today he walked away with the 1941 American League Newcomer of the Year Award. The 23-year-old starter registered a 14-7 record this season in 32 starts. Over 186.1 innings he gave up 188 hits, struck out 75 and issued 62 walks as he held the opposition to a .259 batting average and fashioned a 3.48 ERA. AL Outstanding Pitcher Award Goes to Lanier Wednesday, October 22nd, 1941 The Philadelphia Athletics have a rising superstar or maybe even a budding Hall-of-Famer in the making. It's Max Lanier, this year's American League Outstanding Pitcher Award selection. This blossoming hurler wowed fans, peers and sportswriters with a fabulous performance. Lanier compiled a 28-6 record in 38 starts, tallied 192 strikeouts in 327.2 innings and recorded a 2.31 ERA. Other clubs managed only a .229 batting average against him. Rowe Voted NL Outstanding Pitcher Award Wednesday, October 22nd, 1941 Cincinnati ace Schoolboy Rowe put up some sensational stats for the 1941 season and has been voted the National League Outstanding Pitcher Award winner. The 31-year-old Reds star made 36 starts and racked up a 26-9 record. He pitched 308.1 innings, collected 113 strikeouts, gave up 79 walks and 271 hits in holding the opposition to a .234 batting average. NL's Premier Hitter, Williams of Pittsburgh Thursday, October 23rd, 1941 Ted Williams of the Pittsburgh Pirates proved that you can step out of the shadows and onto the stage if you've got the talent and the drive to hone your skills. Hard work, long hours and a tireless resolve paid off for him today in the form of the National League Outstanding Hitter Award. Williams hit for a .375 average while collecting 193 hits, 35 doubles, 4 triples, 40 home runs, 118 RBIs and scoring 112 times. Henrich Named 1941 AL Outstanding Hitter Award Winner Thursday, October 23rd, 1941 The American League Outstanding Hitter Award has been picked for 1941 and the winner is Boston left fielder Tommy Henrich. He finished his outstanding season with a .307 batting average, 160 hits, 23 home runs, 93 RBIs, .405 OBP and 100 runs scored. Hall of Fame Cobb in North American BaseBall League HOF Saturday, November 22nd, 1941 In a ceremony witnessed by all the living members of the North American BaseBall League Hall of Fame, Ty Cobb stepped on the stage to join the game's immortals. During his 3550-game career batted .361, produced 148 home runs, 5223 hits and 2165 RBIs, while scoring 2988 times. The legendary left fielder, surrounded by his joyful family, looked on as his plaque went up on the wall of fame at baseball's shrine to its greatest players. After the induction ceremony, one of the Hall of Famers notorious for doctoring the ball was asked how did he pitch to Cobb. "Greaseball, greaseball, greaseball, that's all I threw him... and he still hit them. He's the only player in baseball who consistently hit my grease. He saw the ball so well, I guess he could pick out the dry side." Johnson Joins HOF Legends Saturday, November 22nd, 1941 At the Hall of Fame induction ceremonies today, the longtime friend and manager of Walter Johnson told the audience, "The worst thing as a manager is the day you realize you want to win more than the players do. I never had that problem with Walter. Nobody wanted to win more than this gifted pitcher." For his strong and consistent pitching over the years, Johnson was voted into the North American BaseBall League Hall of Fame by the Baseball Writers Association. Walter Johnson had a career won-loss record of 515 wins and 375 losses with 3975 strikeouts in 8102.1 innings and a 3.13 ERA.

Feller Fires No-Hitter Saturday, April 25th, 1942 It was a terrific day for Bob Feller of the Cleveland Indians at Comiskey Park. He stood out with a fantastic 3-0 no-hitter against the Chicago White Sox. "I knew I had a No-No going in about the sixth inning, when I noticed no one was talking to me anymore," he said, referring to the time honored superstition of teammates avoiding the pitcher so they won't jinx the no-hitter. "Don't let people fool you. Everybody on the field and in the ballpark knows what's happening. They just pretend they don't." For the game Feller totaled 5 walks and 6 strikeouts in a very strong outing. The Cleveland pitching coach marveled at his performance, "His mechanics were perfect and I don't think he threw one bad pitch in the whole game. He was that good."

1942 Hall of Fame
Lyons Takes Place Among Greats Wednesday, October 21st, 1942 "From the first time I saw him play, I knew he had the potential to be one of the best," Denny Lyons's first manager said, "and the more I saw him play, the more certain I was that he would reach that potential." This manager was just one of the people there at Lyons's enshrinement in the North American BaseBall League Hall of Fame. It was a celebration of the career of one of the shining stars of his generation. His teammates loved him and opposing fans loved to hate him, but respect followed him everywhere, as evidenced by the large crowd at the ceremony. Not only were teammates there, but opposing players and managers as well, along with a large throng of fans. The man of the moment was overcome with emotion when he finally took his turn at the podium to speak. "This is one of the greatest moments of my life and to share it with all of you here is... simply amazing. I would just like to thank my family and all my teammates for their support during my journey here. Individual honor was never my goal, winning was, but this is more than I could have ever dreamed." Lyons retired with a .314 career batting average. He mainly played third baseman, participated in 2050 games, hit 142 home runs and batted in 1412 runs.
