NABL News: Draft Pool Revealed
Friday, September 12th, 1941
For would-be rookies, a list of whom was announced today by the league, the wait to find out whether or not they have been selected is excruciating. It's tough just getting a scout to notice you, to think you are worth investing an organization's future in. Then draft day arrives and you are snatched up by someone you might not have expected. Some will catch on big; others will be away from home for the first time and will struggle to gain a solid footing in the minors. Still others will battle through, gain that coveted footing and go on to have a solid professional career.

The top players available (in no particular order) seem to be:
1. Russ Christopher, 24 year-old starting pitcher out of college.
2. Buddy Blattner, 21 year-old shortstop out of college.
3. Hi Bithorn, 25 year-old starting pitcher out of college.
4. Ray Sanders, 24 year-old first baseman out of college.
5. Ron Northey, 21 year-old right fielder out of college.
6. Willard Marshall, 20 year-old left fielder out of college.
7. Johnny Pesky, 21 year-old shortstop out of college.
8. Tommy Holmes, 24 year-old center fielder out of college.
9. Tex Hughson, 25 year-old starting pitcher out of college.
10. Eddie Robinson, 20 year-old first baseman out of college.

Pitcher: Johnny Podgajny (Chicago White Sox)
Catcher: Ernie Lombardi (Chicago White Sox)
First Baseman: Les Fleming (New York Yankees)
Second Baseman: Joe Gordon (New York Yankees)

Hall of Fame
Cobb in North American BaseBall League HOF
Saturday, November 22nd, 1941

In a ceremony witnessed by all the living members of the North American BaseBall League Hall of Fame, Ty Cobb stepped on the stage to join the game's immortals. During his 3550-game career batted .361, produced 148 home runs, 5223 hits and 2165 RBIs, while scoring 2988 times. The legendary left fielder, surrounded by his joyful family, looked on as his plaque went up on the wall of fame at baseball's shrine to its greatest players.

After the induction ceremony, one of the Hall of Famers notorious for doctoring the ball was asked how did he pitch to Cobb. "Greaseball, greaseball, greaseball, that's all I threw him... and he still hit them. He's the only player in baseball who consistently hit my grease. He saw the ball so well, I guess he could pick out the dry side."

Johnson Joins HOF Legends
Saturday, November 22nd, 1941

At the Hall of Fame induction ceremonies today, the longtime friend and manager of Walter Johnson told the audience, "The worst thing as a manager is the day you realize you want to win more than the players do. I never had that problem with Walter. Nobody wanted to win more than this gifted pitcher."

For his strong and consistent pitching over the years, Johnson was voted into the North American BaseBall League Hall of Fame by the Baseball Writers Association.

Walter Johnson had a career won-loss record of 515 wins and 375 losses with 3975 strikeouts in 8102.1 innings and a 3.13 ERA.

Feller Fires No-Hitter
Saturday, April 25th, 1942

It was a terrific day for Bob Feller of the Cleveland Indians at Comiskey Park. He stood out with a fantastic 3-0 no-hitter against the Chicago White Sox.

"I knew I had a No-No going in about the sixth inning, when I noticed no one was talking to me anymore," he said, referring to the time honored superstition of teammates avoiding the pitcher so they won't jinx the no-hitter. "Don't let people fool you. Everybody on the field and in the ballpark knows what's happening. They just pretend they don't."

For the game Feller totaled 5 walks and 6 strikeouts in a very strong outing.

The Cleveland pitching coach marveled at his performance, "His mechanics were perfect and I don't think he threw one bad pitch in the whole game. He was that good."

Lyons Takes Place Among Greats
Wednesday, October 21st, 1942

"From the first time I saw him play, I knew he had the potential to be one of the best," Denny Lyons's first manager said, "and the more I saw him play, the more certain I was that he would reach that potential."

This manager was just one of the people there at Lyons's enshrinement in the North American BaseBall League Hall of Fame. It was a celebration of the career of one of the shining stars of his generation. His teammates loved him and opposing fans loved to hate him, but respect followed him everywhere, as evidenced by the large crowd at the ceremony. Not only were teammates there, but opposing players and managers as well, along with a large throng of fans.

The man of the moment was overcome with emotion when he finally took his turn at the podium to speak. "This is one of the greatest moments of my life and to share it with all of you here is... simply amazing. I would just like to thank my family and all my teammates for their support during my journey here. Individual honor was never my goal, winning was, but this is more than I could have ever dreamed."

Lyons retired with a .314 career batting average. He mainly played third baseman, participated in 2050 games, hit 142 home runs and batted in 1412 runs.

Reds-Dodgers Swap: Dahlgren for Neighbors
Monday, November 16th, 1942

You can focus on the negatives after being traded to a new team -- finding a new place to stay, leaving teammates and friends, having to start anew -- but one player hopes to focus on the positives. "It means I'm wanted somewhere. At least one team sees potential in me." Those were the comments heard after the Cincinnati Reds came to an agreement to deal 30-year-old first baseman Babe Dahlgren, 24-year-old minor league right fielder Paul Busby and a 2nd round draft pick to the Brooklyn Dodgers for 25-year-old third baseman Bob Neighbors earlier today. The deal is expected to be formally announced later this evening.

In his all-time stats Dahlgren is hitting .294 with 638 hits, 45 home runs, 312 runs scored and 318 RBIs.

His all-time numbers show Neighbors is carrying a .263 career batting average with 19 home runs and 108 RBIs.
