Boston Americans - May 1903
After a disappointing April, the Boston Americans improved with a 17-12 record in May and now sit in 4th place in the American League standings. The team has struggled to put the ball in play this year and has relied on the longball and its base running prowess. The pitching staff has been solid but has allowed far too many homeruns so far and is lacking a dominant "stuff" pitcher.
Had the team played at its April level, I was fully prepared to trade off veterans and look for a rebuilding plan. Now that the team had a successful May, I am torn want to do. It will be very difficult to get into playoff contention, yet I don't want to sell too early and miss a chance to compete. The first few weeks of June play will guide on my decision.

Boston Americans - Hitting
The hitting-attack as not been as impressive as it was last year, but there are a few bright spots to mention. John Farrell is leading the team in batting average (.310), hits (63), triples (6), slugging (.409), and OPS (.759). Bill Lange is the team leader in runs (40), stolen bases (35) and WAR (2.6). It is disappointing how Dave Brain (-0.2 WAR) and Jesse Hoffmeister (-0.0) have performed as the rotating 3rd basemen.

Boston Americans - Pitching
While not as dominant as I had anticipated, the staff is still performing well overall. Noodles Hahn and Jesse Tannehill are tied with 2.4 WAR, and Sam Leever has had several strong outings of late. The performance of Cy Young is a tough one for me to figure out. His record (4-9) and ERA (3.25) is not what I had hoped for, but his WAR (1.8) is higher than what I would have thought in light of his struggles. I know that age will catch up (or maybe already has) to him and he will get progressively worse. I don't want to see him move on, but I do need to be practicable about the rotation. The bullpen has been strong, but I clearly made a mistake spending big money on international free agent Jose Ramos (-0.3 WAR, 2 blown saves).

Player Development Report
The May 1903 player development report from scout Dave Radovanovic is out. Happy to see the movement rating increase for Jose Ramos and the power and eye increases for Joel Servin. Not liking the contact and eye decrease for Ernesto Urrutia. I have been thinking of moving on from Ossee Schreckengost and his latest ratings drop will push me closer to making a trade.

Power Rankings
The New York Highlanders (37-20) remain at the top of the latest Power Rankings, though the Philadelphia Athletics (36-21) are close behind. The Boston Americans (28-29) have moved up to 6th place due to a nice winning streak. For what seems like the first time this year, there is a battle for last place as the New York Giants (19-38) are closing in on the Chicago White Sox (18-39).

American League Pitcher of the Month
It did not come as a surprise that New York Highlanders pitcher Christy Mathewson took home the American League Pitcher of the Month award. Picking up his 2nd career PofM honor, Mathewson had a 7-2 record, striking out 53 batters in 80 1/3 innings pitched while accumulating 1.9 WAR and 2.0 WPA.

National League Pitcher of the Month
Chicago Cubs pitcher Joe Corbett may not be the best pitcher in baseball (or even on his own team for that matter), but things were clicking for him during May 1903. In taking home his 1st National League Pitcher of the Month award, Corbett posted a 6-1 record with a 1.89 ERA in 62 innings pitched. His efforts generated 0.8 WAR and 1.6 WPA for the 1st Place Cubs.

American League Batter of the Month
While his Cleveland Naps may not be playing up to expectations, Doc Gessler is putting together a great season. In picking up the American League Batter of the Month award, Gessler went 39 for 113 (.345 batting average) with 9 Doubles, 2 Triples, 2 Homeruns, 23 Runs, 14 RBIs, 15 Walks, and 8 Stolen Bases which was good for a slash line of .345/.439/.513 and generated 2.2 WAR and 1.38 WPA.

National League Batter of the Month
As the "Old Man" in the clubhouse, Jake Beckley has heard it all from his Chicago Cub teammates. While they may not let up on his age, the fact that Beckley took home National League Batter of the Month honors will get him some well-deserved praise from his team. In picking up the award, Beckley batted .377 (46 for 122) with 8 Doubles, 1 Triple, 22 Runs, 24 RBIs, and 3 Walks to finish with a slash line of .377/.391/.459 that resulted in 1.4 WAR and 0.87 WPA. This is Beckley's second PofM honor.

Game 58: Boston Americans vs. Detroit Tigers
A low-scoring affair that saw the Detroit Tigers (32-26) shutout the Boston Americans (28-30) by a 2 to 0 score. The loss moves the Americans to 10 games out of the 1st-place spot.
Detroit pitcher Norwood Gibson (8-6) scattered 7 hits and 1 walk on a total 118 pitches to earn the shutout victory; Game Score 73. The Tigers' first round selection in last year's draft (15th overall) is currently ranked as the 15th best prospect in MLB. Sam Leever (7-7) took the loss despite pitching well. On the day, Leever allowed 2 earned runs on 3 hits and 3 walks; Game Score 68. The Tigers' offense was generated by Roger Bresnahan (1 for 4, Double, Run) and Mike Donlin (2 for 3, RBI, Walk). The Americans were led by Bill Lange (1 for 3, Triple, Walk) and Kid Elberfeld (1 for 3, Double). Player of the Game: Norwood Gibson

Game Performance Spotlight: Bill Bradley
Philadelphia Phillies 3rd baseman Bill Bradley had quite the hitting performance against the pesky Cincinnati Reds. Bradley's 5 for 5 night included 2 Doubles, 3 Runs, 3 RBIs, and a Walk to lead his team to a 10 to 5 victory.

Game 59: Boston Americans vs. Detroit Tigers
After getting shutout the last two games and down by a 6 to 2 score heading into the 9th inning, it was looking like a sweep was imminent. Surprisingly though, the Boston Americans (29-30) scored 6 runs in the final inning to take the game by a score of 8 to 6 over the Detroit Tigers (32-27).
While Noodles Hahn did not factor into the decision, he pitched well in that he allowed 3 earned runs on 9 hits in 7 innings of play; Game Score 51. Jose Ramos (1-1) picked up his first win of the season but it came at the cost of allowing 3 earned runs on 2 hits and 2 walks. Al Orth earned his first save of the season for his scoreless effort in the final inning. Doc White (10-7) was burdened with the loss after serving up 8 runs (5 earned) on 12 hits, 1 walk, and 1 wild pitch in 8 1/3 innings of play; Game Score 36. Togie Pittinger covered the final 2/3 innings in a scoreless performance. On the offensive side of the equation, Frank Chance (2 for 5, Triple, 2 Runs, 2 Stolen Bases), Dave Brain (2 for 3, 2 Runs, Walk, Stolen Base), and Kid Elberfeld (2 for 4, Run, 2 RBIs) led the Americans, while Nixey Callahan (1 for 3, Double, Run, RBI), Mike Donlin (2 for 4, Run, Stolen Base), and Freddy Parent (2 for 4, 2 RBIs) contributed in the loss. Player of the Game: Noodles Hahn (Season: #8 / Career: #53)

Game 60: Cleveland Naps vs. Boston Americans
Disappointing outcome for the hometown fans, as the Cleveland Naps (29-31) beat the Boston Americans (29-31) by a score of 4 to 2. The loss drops the Americans into 5th place in the American League standings; 10 games out of the lead.
Watty Lee (8-7) picked up the win after allowing just 2 earned runs on 6 hits and 2 walks; Game Score 66. Jesse Tannehill (8-7) was tagged with the loss after giving up 4 runs (1 earned) on 9 hits and 1 walk; Game Score 62. Joe Sugden (2 for 4, 2 Doubles, Run, RBI) and Doc Gessler (2 for 5, Triple, Run, RBI) led the Naps' efforts, while Fred Clarke (2 for 3, Homerun, Run, RBI) and John Farrell (1 for 3, Run, Stolen Base) played well in the loss. Game 61: Cleveland Naps vs. Boston Americans
This was a game that Boston (29-32) should have won. Leading by a score of 2 to 1 heading into the top of the 9th inning, a series of base hits and a rather untimely wild pitch by Cy Young allowed the tying run to score sending the game into extra-innings. A quick meltdown and a 5 to 3 loss to the Cleveland Naps (30-31) was in the books.
Jake Weimer (10-4) went the distance, allowing 3 earned runs on 11 hits, 2 walks, and 1 hit batsman while striking out 7 in a 163 pitch outing; Game Score 63. Cy Young (4-10) was tagged the loss after serving up 5 earned runs on 10 hits, 3 walks, 2 wild pitches, and a hit batsman; Game Score 54. Cleveland's offense was powered by Jake Weimer (2 for 4, Triple, 2 Runs), Watty Lee (3 for 5, 2 RBIs), and Doc Gessler (1 for 2, Run, RBI, Walk, Hit by Pitch). Boston's contributions came from Fred Clarke (2 for 4, Double, Run, RBI), Danny Shay (2 for 4, Double, RBI), and John Farrell (1 for 4, Run, Walk). Player of the Game: Jake Weimer
