Cards news: July 10 -- Major swap with D'backs acquires OF Jorge Alainiz
The St. Louis Cardinals have acquired outfielder Jorge Alainiz from the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for outfielder Luis Guanipa and minor-league right-handed pitcher David Badie.
Alaniz, 26, has batted .315 with 11 home runs and 50 RBIs in 84 games/83 starts for the D'backs. Since breaking into the majors in 2031, he is a .285 hitter with 132 homers and 450 RBIs in 829 starts/775 games. Acquired in a 2034 mid-season trade with the Braves, Guanipa was hitting .246 with five home runs and 26 RBIs in 51 games/48 starts this season. In 253 games/242 starts with the Cardinals, he has hit .252 with 32 homers and 135 RBIs. Badie has been near the top of St. Louis' pitching prospects list for a few years, but has struggled in his opportunities to pitch in the majors. In six starts this season, he has gone 1-2 with a 9.51 ERA. He has made nine starts over the past two years, and gone 2-3 with an 8.39 ERA. The Diamondbacks are paying half of Alaniz salary. |

Cards news: July 14 -- LH reliever Ezequiel Parrilla dealt to L.A. Angels for three minor leaguers
The St. Louis Cardinals have traded left-handed relief pitcher Ezequiel Parrilla to the Los Angeles Angels in exchange for three minor leaguers.
Parrilla, 30, has struggled this season pitching in 50 games and going 1-0 with a 5.79 ERA. He broke into the majors with St. Louis in 2031 and enjoyed a good amount of success. Altogether, he has pitched in 340 games/no starts, and gone 22-13 with 10 saves and a 3.91 ERA. From the Angels, the Cardinals have received a pair of second basemen -- Sean Malatesta and Steve Sims -- and starting pitcher Craig Mikulas. Malatesta, 24, has played most of the season at AAA Salt Lake, hitting .285 with 14 home runs and 44 RBIs in 63 games/61 starts. He also got into 11 games with the Angels, during which he hit .250 with one home run and six RBIs. Over 53 games/51 starts, Malatesta is a .230 hitting with five home runs and 25 RBIs. A former second-round pick in the 2034 draft by Los Angeles, the 21-year-old Sims has spent this season at High-A playing in 66 games/65 starts during which he has hit .242 with five home runs and 29 RBIs. Taken in the fifth round of the 2035 draft, Mikulas, 22, has gone a combined 3-5 with a 4.43 ERA in 15 starts at A and AA. |

Cards news: July 15 -- OF Jorge Alaniz season ends with knee injury
Just acquired from the Arizona Diamondbacks, outfielder Jorge Alaniz's season with the St. Louis Cardinals is probably already over.
Making his first start with the team, he left a 9-6 victory on July 11 over the Atlanta Braves with an injury. Today, the team learned Alaniz will be out up to three months with a torn meniscus in his knee. He made four at bats in that game and had two hits and an RBI before getting hurt while running the bases. Before the trade, Alaniz had hit .315 with 11 home runs and 50 RBIs in 84 games/83 starts with the D'backs. |
