Yes to both, but to be honest, there's seems to be quite a random element as well. I've watched it closely over my extended playing time, and often there doesn't seem to a clear rhyme or reason. (Like when you've got a guy assigned to low minutes, yet somehow he's still among the most wiped at game's end).

I don't scratch, I decrease playing time, and I find it's usually a pretty effective management tool for getting them back up to a 100% over a day and/or game or two. (I'd rather have my best players in the game, playing reduced minutes on a lower line, instead of missing the game altogether).

Yes. Fitness level is heavily dependent on the stamina attribute, (both in-game and during recovery), so it's a good idea to assign 'physical training' in order to work on improving it for those guys that need it most.

Another quick question, what is the use of the check boxes next to the players' names in the lines section?
Also, is it possible to set up different player tactics according to the unit he's playing for (PP, PK, 4o4...)?

The check box is for locking the player on that line/position. So if you use AI/Coach set lines, those players will stay where you locked them.

Curious about end of season timing in-game vs in real life. Specifically regarding signing prospects. I often have close to 50 contracts with 4 or 5 expiring that I plan on releasing to free agency on July 1st. However the final week (June 23rd) I often need to sign 4 or 5 prospects or lose their rights. However in order to sign the prospects I can't be over the 50 contract limit. Something feels off with the timing and the overlap of contracts during that one week period. Can this be looked at? or does it indeed mirror real life?

I think the problem is with the buyout values. If you release a player on June 30th his buyout amount is still a full years salary, even though he will be a free agent the next day. The buyout value should be pro-rated in the final year of the contract. Also in the NHL players are only paid to end of regular season.

I've never done a tank quite as dramatic as the Blackhawks currently are in real life, would a team tolerate something like this in FHM or can you make a rebuilding team too weak?

FHM Contract Question

If a player has 1 year left and is extended for 2 more - then gets traded with retention. Will the retention be for all 3 years or just 1 year?

Head Coach Question:

If I bump my Head Coach in game tactics from the original 7 to 20 will it make a massive difference to my team's performance. Or are in game tactics based on an average of all my Head Coach and Assistant coaches

It may sound nitpicking but I was wondering what the plan was for FHM 9 in regards to the waivers workaround used in this year's version. Obviously the best scenario would be to get it to work as in real life however I think otherwise having the ability to just release the player back to all NHL teams is closer to reality than the one year obligation to stay with the team that claimed that player. It also seems more favorable for the AI trying to manage their roster. I skipped buying this year's version mostly based on this imposed one year clause for waiver claims as it deviated too much from reality to my liking, unfortunately...

My understanding is it's a combination of both. The way the game makes the calculation is the head coach is weighted most heavily, followed by the best two assistants who are also factored in, just not as much as the HC.

Finance Question

Hi, I am new to the game and have a question about monthly finances. If I spend points on game promotions in my monthly budget during the offseason, am I just wasting points? Or does that do anything? Same question for scouting and morale during the offseason. Does that accomplish anything during July and August?

I think those points are wasted yes, during the off-season I don't spend anything on game promotions, and I lower team morale to 0. I'm not sure if it's useful but I tend to keep a good scouting coverage even in the summer though.

Agreed. And even with the scouting, there's very little for them to watch in the summer. So best to save your cash for a rainy day.

Roster Moves Assistant

If I set roster moves to assistant in the manager options, does the AI ever waive players? Or does it only move non-waiver players between leagues (NHL/AHL)

It does for other teams, so even though I haven't tried it, I think it would for you too.

Assistant Coaches

What exactly do assistant coaches do in terms of game mechanics? And is there any limit to the number of assistant coaches I can hire? It seems unlimited, and I'm not sure if it helps my team to hire more and more until I run out of budget

The way the game mechanic works, is for any given category, (say in-game tactics for example), the head coach has the greatest input followed by the two best assistant coaches in that same category.

So it really won't help if you have unlimited assistants that are all great at a certain thing, because the game only factors in the top two. So best to spread your assistants out to try and have two decent guys covering the most important categories.

Bought the first FHM on launch day and didn't play it much at all because it was a raw product; no problem, I bought it to show support. That said, life happened and I got away from sim games. So here is my question ...

In OOTP, there's a way I like to play: go back to 1901, start a MLB historical sim and then add one team to the NL. Stock it with a random assortment of created free agents (no stars) and play the game as if this happened in real life.

Long story short: Can I now do that same thing with FHM?
