Game 64: Boston Americans vs. New York Highlanders
A 9th inning rally by the Boston Americans (31-33) resulted in a 4 to 3 victory over the New York Highlanders (42-22). The winning run came on a passed ball 3rd-strike that allowed Jesse Tannehill to reach first base and Dave Brain to score from 3rd-base. What a crazy finish!
Jesse Tannehill (9-7) picked up the win, allowing 3 earned runs on 8 hits, 1 walk, and 1 hit batsman; Game Score 64. Wiley Piatt (10-5) was tagged with the loss after giving up 4 runs (3 earned) on 13 hits and 1 walk; Game Score 47. With 13 hits on the day (though none for extra-bases), there were several fine hitting performances including Chick Stahl (2 for 4, Run), Jesse Tannehill (2 for 4, Run, RBI), and Frank Chance (2 for 4, RBI) for the Americans. The Highlanders were led by Otto Krueger (1 for 1, Homerun, Run, RBI), Jesse Burkett (2 for 2, Triple, Run, RBI, Walk), and Jimmy Collins (1 for 4, RBI). Player of the Game: Jesse Tannehill (Season: #9 / Career: #49)

1903 MLB All-Star Game
It took 12-innings to complete, but the National League topped the American League by a 4 to 3 score. This is the 1st time that the NL has won the All-Star game in 3 tries.
Neither starting pitcher factored into the decision, yet both pitched well. For the National League, George Mullin pitched a scoreless/hitless 1st-inning on just 12 pitches thrown; Game Score 47. Pete Dowling had a scoreless 2nd inning, while Barney Pelty allowed 1 earned run on 2 hits in the 3rd inning. Picking up the win for the NL was Boston Beaneaters pitcher Ed Siever (1-0) who allowed 2 earned runs on 6 hits and 4 walks in 9 innings of play. The American League was led by Rube Waddell who allowed 1 earned run on 2 hits; Game Score 40. Len Swormstedt pitched a scoreless 2nd-inning, while Noodles Hahn pitched a scoreless 3rd-inning. Washington Senators pitcher Frank Kitson (0-1) was tagged for the loss after allowing 3 earned runs on 2 hits and 5 walks in 9 innings of play. The NL hitting-attack was led by Brooklyn Superbas 2nd baseman Hobe Ferris (1 for 3, Triple, 2 RBIs) and St. Louis Cardinals 3rd baseman Tommy Leach (2 for 4, 3 Runs, Walk, 2 Stolen Bases). The AL offense was powered by Boston Americans 2nd baseman John Farrell (3 for 4, Triple, Run, Walk) and Detroit Tigers catcher Tom Daly (1 for 4, Double, 2 RBIs). Player of the Game: Ed Siever

Game 66: Washington Senators vs. Boston Americans
A nice win coming off of the All-Star break, with the Boston Americans (33-33) reaching the .500 mark with a 6 to 1 victory over the Washington Senators (30-36).
Sam Leever (9-7) picked up the win, allowing 1 earned run on 8 hits, 1 walk, and 1 wild pitch; Game Score 66. This is Leever's 5th win in his last 6 decisions. Jack Chesbro (5-8) was saddled with the loss after giving up 6 runs (5 earned) on 6 hits and 1 walk; Game Score 49. The Americans offense received help from Jiggs Donahue (1 for 3, Run, 2 RBIs), Kid Elberfeld (1 for 3, Double, Run, Stolen Base), and Fred Clarke (2 for 4, RBI). Danny Green (3 for 4, Double, Stolen Base) and Jack Doyle (2 for 4, RBI) played well in the loss. Player of the Game: Sam Leever (Season: #6 / Career: #28)

Game 67: Washington Senators vs. Boston Americans
An exciting 16-inning affair that saw a combined 37 hits on the day. In the end, the Boston Americans (34-33) prevailed over the Washington Senators (30-37) by a 9 to 8 score. With the win, the Americans sit alone in 4th place in the American League standings; 9 games out of 1st place.
Neither starting pitcher factored into the decision and, to be honest, did not pitch particularly well. For Boston, Noodles Hahn went 9 2/3 innings in which he allowed 8 runs (7 earned) on 13 hits; Game Score 37. Jose Ramos allowed 1 hit in a scoreless 1 1/3 innings, before he turned it over to Al Orth who provided 3 innings of scoreless ball. Oscar Jones (3-1) picked up the win in his 2 innings of scoreless work. Doc Scanlan was the Senators starting pitcher, allowing 7 runs (6 earned) on 10 hits and 2 walks in 6 innings of play; Game Score 24. Carl Lundgren pitched a scoreless 7th inning, followed by Rube Waddell who allowed 1 earned run on 3 hits and 1 walk in 3 innings of play. Frank Kitson and Ed Poole each provided 2 innings of scoreless ball, before the ball was turned over to Jock Menefee (0-3) who was tagged with the loss after serving up 1 earned run on 2 hits and 1 walk in 1 1/3 innings. There were several outstanding hitting performances on the day. For the Americans, Bill Lange (3 for 8, Double, Homerun, 2 Runs, 2 RBIs), Jesse Hoffmeister (4 for 8, Double, Run, RBI, 2 Stolen Bases), Fred Clarke (2 for 5, Triple, Run, 2 RBIs, 2 Stolen Bases), Frank Chance (3 for 8, Triple, Run, RBI, Stolen Base), and Jiggs Donahue (2 for 6, Double, 2 Runs, RBI) played great! Washington was led by Kid Gleason (3 for 7, 2 Doubles, Run, 2 RBIs), Danny Green (2 for 8, Triple, Run, 2 RBIs), and Doc Casey (3 for 7, Stolen Base). Of note, Bill Lange, Frank Chance, and Jesse Hoffmeister set a Boston team record with 8 at bats in the game. Player of the Game: Bill Lange (Season: #1 / Career: #3)

In picking up the honor, Delahanty went 9 for 21 (.429 batting average) with 1 Double, 4 Runs, 4 RBIs, and 2 Walks for a slash line of .429/.478/.476 which generated 0.3 WAR and 0.66 WPA.

National League Player of the Week
While Johnny Kling is not a household name, fans of the New York Giants catcher know that when he is locked in he can smash the ball among the best of them. In picking up his 1st National League Player of the Week award, Kling posted a .471 batting average (8 for 17) with 1 Double, 2 Triples, 3 Runs, 3 RBIs, 1 Walk, and 1 Stolen base for a slash line of .471/.500/.765 that generated 0.5 WAR and 0.25 WPA.

Power Rankings
There is a change at the top of the Power Rankings, with the Philadelphia Athletics (43-24) taking over the top spot. The Boston Beaneaters (39-28) and the New York Highlanders (42-25) remain in close pursuit. The Boston Americans (34-33) have settled into the mid-tier status as of late, with a current rank putting them in 7th place. The most surprising news is the fact that the New York Giants (22-45) are the new last-place team.

Game 68: Washington Senators vs. Boston Americans
Boston (35-33) completed the sweep of the Washington Senators (30-38) by pounding out 12 runs on 18 hits and 6 walks to secure the 12 to 1 victory. The win moves the Americans into a tie for 3rd place, 9 games behind the top spot.
Jesse Tannehill (10-7) picked up the win, allowing just 1 unearned run on 3 hits and 1 walk on a total of 126 pitches thrown; Game Score 81. Casey Patten (0-3) was driven from the game after just 4 2/3 innings due to the fact that he allowed 9 earned runs on 11 hits and 3 walks; Game Score 4. Arlie Pond covered the final 3 1/3 innings in which he served up an additional 3 earned runs on 7 hits and 3 walks. The Americans' offense was powered by Jiggs Donahue (4 for 4, Run, 2 RBIs), Chick Stahl (4 for 4, 2 Runs, 2 RBIs, Walk), Bill Lange (2 for 5, Run, 2 RBIs), and Dave Brain (1 for 3, Run, 2 RBIs, 2 Walks). The Senators limited offense was generated by Doc Casey (1 for 3, Run, Walk, 2 Stolen Bases) and Duff Cooley (2 for 4, RBI). Player of the Game: Jesse Tannehill (Season: #10 / Career: #50)

Mid-Season Review
Boston Americans' owner Kevin Kunz decided to provide some mid-season feedback. Overall, it appears that my job is safe for now, but Kunz made it clear that he expects me to both improve at 1st base and acquire a Gold Glove player.

Game 69: Philadelphia Athletics vs. Boston Americans
A great win over the American League standings leader. With Boston's (36-33) 2 to 1 victory over the Athletics (44-25), the team now has a 6-game win streak and is slowly inching its way up the standings.
Cy Young (6-10) picked up the win by limiting the opposition to 1 earned run on 5 hits, 3 walks, and 2 hit batsmen; Game Score 74. Mordecai Brown (11-6) took the loss despite allowing 2 runs (1 earned) on 10 hits; Game Score 58. The Americans hitting-attack was led by Frank Chance (3 for 4, Double, Stolen Base), Jiggs Donahue (2 for 3, RBI), Chick Stahl ((2 for 4, Run), and Cy Young (1 for 2, RBI). Philadelphia's limited offense was led by Dick Harley (2 for 5, Run, Stolen Base). Player of the Game: Cy Young (Season: #5 / Career: #37)

Game 70: Philadelphia Athletics vs. Boston Americans
A stressful game for the 5,900 hometown fans, but in the end they watched as their Boston Americans (37-33) topped the Philadelphia Athletics (44-26) by a 2 to 1 score. With its 7th consecutive victory, Boston now as sole possession of 3rd place in the American League standings; 7 games out of the top spot.
Sam Leever (10-7) pitched a fine game, allowing 1 unearned run on 3 hits; Game Score 84. Since his early season struggles, Leever has now reeled off 6 wins in his last 7 decisions and lowered his ERA in the last month from 3.59 to 2.63 for the season. Athletics pitcher Earl Moore did not factor into the decision and, to be honest, I am not sure why the AI pulled him from the game after just 7 innings. He had sufficient rest coming into the game, threw only 91 pitches, and had limited Boston to 1 unearned run on 4 hits and 1 walk; Game Score 66. Red Donahue (3-3) was brought in for the final inning and allowed 1 earned run on 2 hits and 1 wild pitch. There was very little offense from either team today, so players that are worth spotlighting are limited. For the Americans, Bill Lange (1 for 3, Walk, Stolen Base), Chick Stahl (1 for 3, Run, Stolen Base), and John Farrell (1 for 3, RBI) played well. For Philadelphia, it was Billy Maloney (2 for 3, Run, Stolen Base) and Dick Harley (1 for 3) that hit the ball. Player of the Game: Sam Leever (Season: #7 / Career: #29)

Game 71: Philadelphia Athletics vs. Boston Americans
It is rather difficult to win, especially against a team as good as Philadelphia, when your offense generates only 3 hits and your defense commits 6 errors. In the 6 to 1 loss, the Americans (37-34) fell behind early and struggled to gain any momentum against the Philadelphia Athletics (45-26).
In picking up the win, Buttons Briggs (12-5) limited the opposition to 1 unearned run on 3 hits and 4 walks; Game Score 81. In getting his 12th victory of the season, Briggs now sits in a 4-way tie (Joss, Mathewson, and Weimer) for 1st place in the American League wins leader. Noodles Hahn (7-8) took the loss after serving up 6 runs (3 earned) on 7 hits and 4 walks; Game Score 55. Hahn's struggles continue, as he has only 3 wins in his last 12 starts. The Athletics were led at the plate by John Titus (3 for 4, Triple, 2 Runs), Dick Harley (1 for 5, 2 Runs, Stolen Base), and Tom McCreery (1 for 3, Run, RBI, 2 Walks). Fred Clarke, John Farrell, and Noodles Hahn each had 1 hit in the loss. Player of the Game: Buttons Briggs

Game 72: Boston Americans vs. Chicago White Sox
It took 10-innings of play, but the Boston Americans (38-34) were able to top the Chicago White Sox (26-46) by a score of 9 to 6. The Americans remain in 3rd place in the AL standings; 8 games out of the top spot.
Jesse Tannehill (11-7) picked up his 6th victory in his last 7 decisions despite allowing 6 runs (3 earned) on 14 hits and 2 walks; Game Score 45. Closer Jose Ramos picked up his 2nd save of the season with his 1/3 inning of scoreless work. On the other side of the ledger, Brickyard Kennedy (4-6) was tagged with the loss after serving up 9 runs (7 earned) on 11 hits and 4 walks in 9 1/3 innings of play; Game Score 34. Fred Glade covered the final 2/3 inning of scoreless effort. Both teams put the ball in play today and, as a result, there were several fine batting lines generated. For Boston, Jiggs Donahue (3 for 5, 3 Runs, RBI, 2 Stolen Bases), Chick Stahl (3 for 5, Double, Run, RBI, 2 Stolen Bases), and Bill Lange (2 for 6, Run, RBI, Stolen Base) played well. For the White Sox, Harry Bay (3 for 5, 2 Runs, 3 Stolen Bases) and Mike Grady (2 for 3, 2 RBI) made solid contributions. Player of the Game: Jiggs Donahue (Season: #2 / Career: #4)

Game 73: Boston Americans vs. Chicago White Sox
When Boston (38-35) jumped out to an early 2 run lead, I assumed that the team would roll to victory. Instead, the White Sox (27-46) clawed its way back and ultimately prevailed by a score of 4 to 3. Thankfully both teams ahead of the Americans in the AL standings also lost, so the games behind remain the same.
Chicago pitcher Charles "Chief" Bender (7-13) picked up the win, allowing 3 earned runs on 8 hits, 3 walks, and 2 hit batsmen on 172 total pitches; Game Score 62. Cy Young (6-11) was burdened with the loss after surrendering 4 runs (2 earned) on 6 hits and 6 walks in 7 innings of play; Game Score 50. Jose Ramos covered the final inning of scoreless ball. The Chicago hitting-attack was led by Charles Bender (2 for 4, Double, Run), John Anderson (1 for 5, Double, Run, RBI), and Mike Grady (1 for 3, RBI, 2 Walks). For the other dugout, the Americans were led by John Farrell (2 for 3, Double, RBI), Chick Stahl (2 for 5, Run, RBI), and Frank Chance (2 for 4, 2 Runs). Player of the Game: Charles Bender
