Sunday, May 27th, 1945 The crowd sensed something special today at Wrigley Field. They seemed to get a little louder with passing of each out and each inning. It was obvious on the scoreboard that the pitcher had a no-hitter. "It was like the playoffs or the North American Series," Hal Newhouser told the press after the game." It ended up a very special day for Newhouser of the Chicago Cubs -- he held the Brooklyn Dodgers hitless and beat them 9-0, totaling 7 strikeouts with no walks and faced only 28 batters. "Today was my day and I got lucky. I've had a couple of other shots that I've lost in the seventh inning and today I got through that and made it." Lucky? Maybe so. But it usually takes more than luck to hold a team hitless. In 10 starts this season Newhouser has chalked up a 4-5 record and a 3.78 ERA.

Galehouse Brilliant -- Fires No-Hitter Sunday, August 5th, 1945 Denny Galehouse of the Reds was standing behind the mound when the scoreboard caught his eye, confirming what he already knew... he was one out from a no-hitter. He froze... for a couple of seconds he didn't move. "This hitter is the last one," Galehouse told himself. Then he collected himself and finished one of his greatest performances ever. The Cincinnati hurler no-hit the Chicago Cubs 2-0 at Crosley Field, finishing with 2 walks and 4 strikeouts, facing only 29 batters. Galehouse admitted to the press, "I knew from the fifth inning on it was a no-hitter, but really didn't worry about it until the last out. I just wanted to win the game until then... then I wanted the no-hitter, too." This season Galehouse has compiled a 16-8 mark with a 2.53 ERA in 26 starts.

News and Awards
Kish Drafted into United States Army Wednesday, October 17th, 1945 Ernie Kish of St. Louis has been drafted into the Army. The Browns will grant Kish a leave of absence in order for him to fulfill his duty to his country. Kish says he expects to resume his playing career when his military service ends. NL Announces 1945 Top Gloves Sunday, October 21st, 1945 In baseball circles, a player who has good range, a good arm and good hands is a great catch. Clubs strive to be strong in the field, especially "up the middle." Solid defenders can make a difference in the outcome of tight games and tight pennant races. The Glove Wizard Awards for 1945 in the National League go to these standout defenders: Pitcher: Ken Burkhart (New York Giants) Catcher: Johnny Peacock (Chicago Cubs) First Baseman: Ray Sanders (New York Giants) Second Baseman: Snuffy Stirnweiss (St. Louis Cardinals) Third Baseman: Whitey Kurowski (New York Giants) Shortstop: Lou Boudreau (Chicago Cubs) Left Fielder: Joe DiMaggio (Cincinnati Reds) Center Fielder: Milt Byrnes (Boston Braves) Right Fielder: Charlie Keller (Cincinnati Reds) Glove Wizard Award Winners in AL Announced Sunday, October 21st, 1945 It's been said that the best offense is a good defense. That's why contending teams are always looking to improve on the defensive side of the game. Keeping runs from scoring is just as good as driving them in. The top fielders have been chosen in the American League for 1945. Here are the Glove Wizard Award winners: Pitcher: Howie Pollet (Detroit Tigers) Catcher: Bill Dickey (Philadelphia Athletics) First Baseman: Joe Kuhel (Detroit Tigers) Second Baseman: Red Borom (Washington Senators) Third Baseman: Pete Reiser (Detroit Tigers) Shortstop: Bob Neighbors (Chicago White Sox) Left Fielder: Augie Bergamo (Chicago White Sox) Center Fielder: Johnny Lindell (Detroit Tigers) Right Fielder: Al Libke (Washington Senators) National League Selects Best Rookie Monday, October 22nd, 1945 Dave Ferriss's age didn't show very often in his first year. He performed more like a veteran on the hill for the Philadelphia Phillies and today he walked away with the 1945 National League Newcomer of the Year Award. The 23-year-old starter registered a 17-17 record this season in 39 starts. Over 317 innings he gave up 306 hits, struck out 117 and issued 131 walks as he held the opposition to a .257 batting average and fashioned a 3.63 ERA. Washington Catcher Named AL's Best Rookie Monday, October 22nd, 1945 The #1 rookie in the American League was Washington catcher Bill Salkeld, who was today named the 1945 Newcomer of the Year Award winner. He put up some solid numbers, including a .319 batting average and .429 on-base percentage, while racking up 20 home runs, 73 RBIs and 53 runs scored. 1945 NL Outstanding Pitcher Award Chosen Wednesday, October 24th, 1945 24-year-old Hal Newhouser of the Chicago Cubs put together a good year in 1945 for such a young player. Newhouser was named today as the winner of the National League Outstanding Pitcher Award. Newhouser crafted an impressive 27-8 record and a 2.66 ERA. In 328 innings he allowed 270 hits, struck out 223, and walked 128. Voiselle Named AL Outstanding Pitcher Award Winner Wednesday, October 24th, 1945 The Washington Senators have a rising superstar or maybe even a budding Hall-of-Famer in the making. It's Bill Voiselle, this year's American League Outstanding Pitcher Award selection. This blossoming hurler wowed fans, peers and sportswriters with a fabulous performance. Voiselle compiled a 20-17 record in 38 starts, tallied 148 strikeouts in 315 innings and recorded a 2.66 ERA. Other clubs managed only a .225 batting average against him. NL Announces Outstanding Batter Award Thursday, October 25th, 1945 Regardless of where Ted Williams signs on next year, the 27-year-old will be considered a marquee pickup after his award-winning 1945 season with Pittsburgh. Williams received word today that he has won the National League Outstanding Hitter Award. The left fielder pounded out 183 hits, 32 doubles, 5 triples, and 45 home runs while hitting .340 and driving in 123 runs this season. 1945 Premier Batter Selected By AL Thursday, October 25th, 1945 Detroit's Pete Reiser put the wraps on a fine campaign today by winning the 1945 American League Outstanding Hitter Award. The 26-year-old veteran scorched the opposition with a .307 average, picking up 174 hits, 34 doubles, 7 triples, 22 home runs and 104 RBIs, while scoring 135 runs. Major Free Agent Signings RF Williams to Pittsburgh Monday, November 19th, 1945 News of contract negotiations between Ted Williams and Pittsburgh spread like wildfire as the two sides moved ever closer to a deal yesterday. When it was announced this morning, the city was abuzz with excitement as the young phenom was welcomed into the fold. It took a 6-year deal worth $277,200 to land him. During his career Williams has hit for a .358 average and totaled 1177 hits, 267 home runs and 798 RBIs. It's Official: 1B Fleming Signs with Dodgers Monday, November 19th, 1945 The Dodgers and Les Fleming appeared before the Brooklyn media today as the two sides emerged from marathon contract talks. Fleming, a first baseman, is poised to make $84,000 over 3 years. Fleming has a .259 career batting average and has hit a total of 34 home runs. $124,000 Lands CF McCosky for Cardinals Tuesday, November 20th, 1945 In what local scribes are hailing as huge, the Cardinals inked a $124,000 deal with center fielder Barney McCosky. Team Officials expect McCosky to fill an immediate void on the roster and felt the deal would make them an instant playoff contender. In a career spanning 815 games, McCosky has batted .302 with 857 hits, 19 home runs, 337 RBIs, and 474 runs scored. LF Parks Signs $91,000 Deal with Chicago Tuesday, December 4th, 1945 Despite his solid numbers, some fans questioned the value of the Art Parks signing even as Chicago officials paraded him before the media this afternoon. Parks will surely bring a lot to the club, but he comes at a price of $91,000 over 3 years. His career numbers show Parks is hitting .296 with a total of 10 home runs. ![]() ![]() New York Inks Star SS to $55,000 Deal Wednesday, December 19th, 1945 Feedback was positive in New York today as the club announced an agreement with shortstop Ken Keltner, one of the league's marquee players. During his career Keltner has chalked up 1248 hits and a .262 average with 106 home runs and 716 RBIs. Chicago Wins Lottery for LF Slaughter Tuesday, January 8th, 1946 The euphoria surrounding a big name deal can sometimes overshadow the deal itself. Occasionally a team will mortgage its future to make a big splash, though no one in Chicago was worried about that today as the club finalized terms with Enos Slaughter. Slaughter will earn $46,200 per year over 4 years. Slaughter is hitting at a .315 rate over his 938-game career. Lifetime he has 179 doubles, 81 triples and 98 home runs with 567 RBIs and 589 runs scored. Chicago Commits $49,200 to C Wagner Sunday, January 20th, 1946 Cubs officials hailed the signing of Hal Wagner as "an integral piece to our championship puzzle," though fans were somewhat more reserved about the signing. Wagner will pocket $49,200 over 2 years. In his career Wagner has played in 852 games with a .259 batting average. Among his 769 hits are 150 doubles, 32 triples, and 22 home runs. He also has scored 331 runs, walked 399 times, has 5 stolen bases and driven in 394 runs. Indians Win Sweepstakes for SP Feller Friday, January 25th, 1946 Cleveland fans embraced the signing of Bob Feller today with a few doubts. While most were appreciative that the club had signed a solid ballplayer, they were also concerned about his reputation as a "me first" kind of guy. Feller was signed for $230,000 over 5 years. Over the course of his career, Feller has a won-lost record of 144 wins and 98 losses with 1761 strikeouts in 2219.2 innings pitched with a lifetime 3.48 ERA.

Kish is out for 12 months. I am hoping 14 has more of theses for Spanish/American War, WWI, WW 2 , Korea, and Vietnam, and so forth. Maybe increase the chances. I can recall a handful that were drafted.
